Key Bindings 101

BRK » 08 March 2007 » In Macros » 18 Comments

So BRK was asked about how to use key bindings. “I’ve got all these nice macros, but I have to use my mouse to click on them.” Well, we can make some spiffy keybindings so that you can use your keyboard for all your nifty macros.

The above picture shows the left side of my interface buttons. Everybody has the lower row with the numbers, but notice how my upper row shows the function keys F1-F12. As you can see, F1 and F2 are trinkets, F4 is my Pull Shot macro, F7 is my Pet Attack with Hunter’s Mark macro, F8 is my Aspect of the Hawk/Viper swapping macro, F9 is my Misdirection macro, and the others are mapped to standard spells. This is done using the Key Bindings feature of WoW.

This is where we tell the program to assign the Bottom Left action buttons to the function keys. One we assign these keys here, no matter what spell or macro button we put on that spot, it will be activated by the approprate function key. Of course, you can assign any keys here you want, and you can assign keys to all the other action buttons on the other five action bars. Your interface should be built for your playstyle.

People may ask, if I use F1 for a trinket, what do I use when I want to target myself? Well, I changed my key binding for Target Self to CTRL-S. I also use H for mounting my Flying Mount macro, (H to mount, CTRL-H to dismount), G for my Talbuk and Screenshot is my Help key.

If you have a question for BRK like this one, just send a quick email to bigredkitty@gmail.com and we’ll try to find a way to fake our way through an answer for you.

posting doesn’t seem to work in firefox :( the image never turns up.

What do you use for targeting group members if not F1-F5?

I am a hunter; I only directly target the Main Tank, and then only with my Misdirection macro.

The Browser Conundrum: What’s interesting is that I cannot create posts in Safari, and I cannot view the WoW Armory in Firefox. If you have browser problems, contact Blogspot/Google. BRK doesn’t have a clue how to fix any of that…

Emira here! *waves* You’d think after this long in the game, I’d learn to use things like better key bindings to get stuff done. You should see my display.

Oh well, I’m still learning as I go along. I’m also continually experimenting with macros. (”Oh, so that’s what that does!” or “Whoops, that doesn’t work very well at all…*corpse run*”)

My brother is not a Gamer, but he is a computer whiz type person. He didn’t know WoW had a macro language, but the fact that it does piqued his interest. Over spring break, we might see how “intelligent” we can get a pet to be.

^_^ Thanks, once again, for always sharing your wisdom with us!

Thank you Emira. You’d be amazed at how nice it feels to get a simple “thank you”. :)

I just got Voice Commander up and running for my priest. I knew there was a way to assign macros to other buttons but I couldn’t remember if it was a mod or a feature of WoW. Thanks so much for the reminder! This is a huge help. Woot!

Just thumbing threw old post here and saw the MD macro. It looks better than what I am using now but I got to thinking about the Shackle macro I use from Ego.

    /clearfocus [target=focus,dead,noexists,modifier:shift]
    /focus [target=focus,noexists]
    /cast [target=focus] Shackle Undead

Well replace “Shackle Undead” with “Misdirection” and now you will auto focus your current target and they will remain your focus until they die, no longer exist, or you hold shift.

Going to try this out tonight but it should allow you to focus your main tank very easily but in the situation where an off tank or pet needs help getting aggro this should allow you to not have to use an individual focus macro or worry about losing your focus target.

edit: wow I must not have had enough caffine yet and this went up on the wrong post. I’ll try to get it on the macro post I was thinkin about.

Thank you a million times over! This is the best web site ever and for those who don’t really have guild mates to help instruct us, this site is pure gold.

I find it funny that there is so much confusion about key binding. Seemed like the most strait forward part of customizing your interface, IMO.

    Hi

Can you key bind the Pet action Bar? and How? or if not what alternative a have.

This will become more important with the new Pet talents to be able to take most out of the Pet DPS.

    Thxs

to the comment of what do you use to target other players… well as a hunter… you shouldn’t be targetting any other players… except the tank… and then any mob around you…

before i start any instance/raid i set up MD macros for all tanks (incase one goes down) and let them know it’s coming…

    /y MD on (my tank)
    /target (my tank)
    /cast Misdirection

now for specific situations to where i know what the mob is i’ll be MD’n i’ll add /target (whatever the mob is… let’s say Supremus)

then all i do is hit distracting shot/arcane and wait for distract to come up….

that was waaayyyy too much info hahah

You should make the macro work with focus targets or hover over targets , when you hover over a target and press the macro it casts md on them , if there is no focus /or your not hovering anyone it should cast md on your pet.
