Pets Pets and More Pets: We Couldn’t Be Happier

“Do you know if there is a maximum loyalty level for hunter’s pets? We haven’t been able to find something explicit in the strategy guides concerning maximum training points for our dog. Thanks again, Ezra.”

Pet training question, dear readers. And you can bet this is great timing. With 2.1 now live we have a couple of new pet talents that need to be added to our discussion.

But first, Pet Loyalty. There are six levels of pet loyalty with the max being Best Friend. Which makes sense if you think about it; any closer and the relationship gets kinda weird.

Training Points are the same today as they were yesterday. When your pet hits level 70 and is your Best Friend, the max number of pet training points he’ll have 350. That’s it, that’s all, end of discussion there.

But what do you do with them?

First off, head over to The Hunter’s Mark and Lassirra’s Pet Training Calculator. You can build your pet there before spending the gold (silver, actually) to retrain your pet.

It should be noted that this calculator is a little behind the times as she has not yet included the two new trainable pet spells, Avoidance and Cobra Reflexes. But we’re sure it’s in the works.

Well, we certainly hope it’s in the works… Lassirra? Can we get a report, please?

Wait a minute, you said new pet spells?

Yupper. And they’re doozies, too.

Avoidance has two levels. The first - trainable at level 30 - mitigates 25% of all AoE damage. The second - trainable at level 60 - mitigates 50%.

/jawdrop

Yeah, 50% of all AoE just Pfft gone. Unless you’re a hunter who doesn’t bring his pet out in instances - an practice we’ve frequently derided - you’re probably gonna want this bad-boy.

Avoidance Rank 1 costs 15 training points, Rank 2 costs 25 training points. Of course, the cost is not cumulative if you want Rank 2; it’s only 25 talent points, not 40.

Cobra Reflexes is a Beastmaster hunter’s new buddy and pal. It increases your pet’s attack speed bu 30% with a matching drop in damage-per-hit. Why is this so cool? Pet procs.

More frequent attacks mean more frequent crits. Frenzy is a pet-crit-based talent that, when combined with Serpents Swiftness, will bump your pet’s attack speed to 0.99 seconds per attack. That’s not Claw or Bite, that’s just his white damage attack speed. Again, more frequent attacks are more frequent crits for…

Ferocious Inspiration. If you put 3/3 talent points in FI, when your pet crits your entire party gets +3% to all damage: melee, ranged and spell. With Cobra Reflexes, Frenzy, and Ferocious Inspiration, you can basically consider your pet to have a frickin’ +3% to all damage aura; it’s gonna be proccing so frequently it’ll never go away.

That’s the definition of The Schiznit, ain’t it. That’s so boss I wanna pay Social Security withholding. Yeeha!

    BM = FI
    MM = TSA
    SURV = EW

    I would love to see a raid w/ one of each spec leeching off each other’s buffs. The DPS bonus would be retuded.

    I about wet my pants when I checked my pet’s attack speed mid-frenzy and saw 0.99. I’m going to have to turn off my scrolling combat text mod, because it fills the whole screen with bloody goodness - it’s like I set off a snake trap.

    One thing I’d like to point out, especially to BM hunters that raid, is that with Cobra reflexes and KC off the GCD, I can keep Frenzy up 99% of the time with only 4 talent points in it. That gives you an extra point to sink into Animal Handler to get more pet hit, which is good against L73 Mobs. You might want to give it a try.

    I couldn’t find the article in which this was mentioned, but pet re-training in my experience is NOT 10s a go. It increases, up to a max of 10g, each time you re-train the same pet. If you’re re-training a new pet for the first time, it’s indeed back at 10s, but per pet, I swear it’s not a constant 10s. Did I miss something?

    If you just retrain your pet 3x in a row it’ll cost:

    10silver for the 1st retraining
    50silver for the 2nd retraining
    1gold for the 3rd retraining

    If you go back the next day to retrain, the cost will go back down to 50silver, wait two days and it’s 10silver again.

    We’re not sure what the exact retraining-cost formula is, but’s it’s pretty quick to go back down to 10silver.

    I need some clarification:

    When training your pet, there is no advantage to training each rank of wanted abilities (such as great stamina) as they are not cumulative, correct? or is this incorrect?

    I need to play around with it some but i’m never in IF anymore :-/

    You are correct. There is no benefit to training Bite 1 and Bite 2 and Bite 3 as opposed to just training Bite 3.
