The Wondertwin Power of BeastMaster
“Hey, anybody from Kara group 2 wanna run tonight?”
F-ing A we do. And off we went.
A quick glance at our co-raiders and we realize we’re… we’ll, we were going to say “woefully undergeared” but “woeful” is a bit strong. We’ve got good gear, not great gear, but they have purples. The rogue has eleven, including both daggers. Shoot, they might have been swords, we didn’t pay that much attention, but they were certainly epics.
Our Goal: Not to be a liability. That’s a good goal for a first time run in your new guild’s Kara group 2, isn’t it? We thought so. Be on time, have all your bullets and petfood, be repaired, and don’t wig out and aggro everything.
We started really late due to a guild meeting and our only goal was to take down Attumen. Cool. We have work tomorrow so one boss and the stress of not f-ing up is enough for us tonight.
We did some dps, some chain trapping, some Misdirection pulling. We busted a Shackle with a Multi Shot but only once. We haven’t seen a Shackle since Strat Dead and couldn’t remember if a shot would break it. /embarrassed
We wiped on the boss the first time; the off-tank didn’t know he was immune to Taunt. Then next time, we took him down after we saved Misdirection and popped it on the off-tank to help him get aggro. Worked beautifully.
So how did we do? Gear? Please. We don’t get drops, he dropped just plate and cloth. But how did we do? Dude and dudettes, he ya go:
Munarc, the much-purpled rogue, was also running DamageMeters and we were syncing nicely. You want to see his gear? Here he is.
Our feral druid tank was slightly cowed when he say Big Red Kitty was bigger than he was. We grabbed aggro a couple of times but was able to FD out of them. Did we sacrifice DPS for trapping? Yes. We chain-trapped when asked and we did our job of pulling our trapped mob far out of the way and lost precious DPS-time as we had to run back into DPS-range. But still. BRK rocked the d@mn house! Step back, kiss ourselves!
Yes, we went b@lls-to-the-wall, popping every trinket and every talent we had. Bestial Wratch, Rapid Fire, you name it, we mashed it. We did use Aspect of the Viper for the boss-fight, and we’re really glad we did. We didn’t run out of mana but did get low.
And they were talking about us. We received a whisper from a mage in the guild we’ve run with. Here’s the conversation, the best we can recall it.
“Are you spamming DamageMeters?”
“Spamming, no. Running, yes.”
“I keep getting whispers about the beastmaster hunter. I think they were going to tell you respec but wanted to see what you would do. Can you show me the damage stats?”
– We synced and then sent the report to him –
“Do you have like all your points in the beastmaster tree?”
“No. We’re 41/20/0″
“How much of your damage does your pet do?
“40% on average.”
“I am totally blown away that a beastmaster hunter can do so much dps. You’re even beating Munarc!”
It was at this point that the raid leader asked for a DamageMeters report. We were debating whether or not we should post ours and if that would seem like we were bragging, when Munarc himself posted them. Of course they matched ours as we’ve been syncing. The silence in Vent was a bit unnerving until the raid leader said,
“Well, d@mn.”
So now the BRK Ego is in complete and totaly meltdown with no control rods to contain the runaway machismo. We think we grew more chest hair, (but it might have been some juice from the chicken pot pie from Boston Market we were eating).
If the rule-of-thumb is that the first boss in Karazhan is a “gear-check” then we think we’ve passed it. Tonight, more dps-goodness! Yeeha!

Gratz Damh!!!
I too saw Kara for the first time in the last couple days and managed to beat out all the other DPS classes in the raid. Beleive it not though, I was under more pressure than you were to perform, cause I was leading my first raid ever…in Kara! So, managing to get my guild a 1-0 record on Attumen AND top the meters is huge and I would like to thank you for all the tips and tricks I’ve been reading for the past 3 months.

Atta boy Damh! Way to work.
Rock on re: the whole spec thing.
Did the Raid Leader know you’re the well-read BRK author?

BRK ego in meltdown??!!?? Didn’t that happen a LONG time ago…
Way to go. My guild just took down the Prince (we were stuck on Aran) and I missed the whole thing due to IRL stuff. I think in the end I’m going to make a Beast Master type Hunter… it just looks too awesome to pass up.
Was that damage meter just for the Attumen / Midnight encounter?
I’m going to take a second to go a different direction and I don’t want it to sound like an insult because it isn’t. I’m saying it beause I’ve been through all of Kara and from experience this is what I’ve seen.
Your Mages/Locks/Hunters/Rogues had better be on the tops of the DPS charts. Overall, I can’t recall how many runs though that place I’ve been on and every time there was our Mage sitting at the top of the chart and by quite a margin. Now, is he really that good? Yea, he’s a damn fine mage. But for a mage and a lock to be that far (25%) behind a hunter and a rogue….OYE!
WAIT!! Don’t get your feathers in a bunch. Relax a second.
I know it probably has a lot to do with gear and player abilities. What I want to get at here is there are fights later on where your Mages and your Locks are going to be the centerpoint of attention. Those people have to be on their best, ABSOLUTE BEST to do the DPS for the party.
If your meter looked like Damh’s see what you can do to help those Mages/Locks crank up their DPS. Trust me….
I know people have bad encounter and stuff, it happens. Hell, I have brainfarts when I’m the main healer but we all live, the boss died and we moved on. Just trying to provide a little positive criticizm. (Is there such a thing?)
If the damage meters was for the entire fight I think the rogue lost a lot of dps because he probably got feared on the trash mobs a lot.
But for the mages/warlocks to be so far behind just proves good spec & decent gear doesn’t make good players.
Singlegrrl, there is only one person in our guild that knows we write a blog, let alone have a WoW Insider column. She isn’t telling because I don’t even think she reads this.
Well done! I’m glad things are working out in your new guild!
I think people with less gear can beat others on the damage meters by timing all of their abilities, which it sounds like you did.
I use my trinkets, cooldowns, and instant cast whenever they are available. It takes extreme concentration, but people with better gear can be out DPS’d.
BRK’s new motto… “Changing people’s minds about Beast Master spec, one raid at a time!”
Your guild might not know you write a column and have a blog but I think you should tell them. Posting dmg meters of a private group without at least mentioning it to anyone seems to me to be a breach of etiquette of some sort.
Hey anon, please register. We’d love to address you directly.
As for telling the guild about our “Published Life”, we just can’t think of a way to do that without coming across as some massive braggart. Now, in this blog and WI we have the Massive Ego and all that, but in the guild we like to make friends. We don’t talk in plural and ridicule other people; we’re just a normal raider and guildie.
Actually, we’ve never met anybody in our travels who “recognized” us and we kinda like that.
As for posting the DamageMeters, we thought about how we would feel if someone else in that run posted a screenshot of us without our knowledge. Frankly, we didn’t find ourselves getting upset or concerned. Would you? We’d like your thoughts.
You’ll probably find, the more you do the Attumen fight, that the rogue will eventually pass you (maybe irrevocably) on the Damage Meters after phase 3. Phase 3 sucks for hunters, and is loved by rogues trying to beat them on the Damage Meters. Gotta hate melee fights. =/
One thing I’ve found that’ll help keep your dps up there for phase 3 is dropping snake traps every time the cooldown’s up. Also, spam Raptor Strike and Bestial Wrath whenever possible (duh?). I’ve found that helps me feel less useless during the melee phase of the fight. And popping AP trinkets never hurts.
lassira, what melee phase of the fight?
If you’re talking about the charge, just take it, and heal the person back up. Unless you have so little health that you get 1-shotted, it shouldn’t be that big a deal.
Hi, im a BM hunter and ive been reading your blog for quite a while and loved the tips and guides. would you mind posting a basic guide on how you were able to do that much damage?
stuff like, when you attack a mob, send a off a sting, hunter’s mark, heal pet, send pet, arcane shot ect.
