Thanks to the comments from Deser and a kind Mr. Anonymous - please register so we can send you BRK Cool Points and you can accept the accolades of your adoring fans! - we are going to totally bogart what they wrote and keep this blog updated with the latest on the Misdirection Insanity Bug, 2007. Let’s the quoting begin with our first +5 BRK Cool Point recipient, Deser:

“The bug with MD is actually as follows: The first two shots will transfer aggro as expected. The third shot will put ALL aggro back onto the hunter if it is an autoshot or arcane shot. There is currently no issue if you do Aimed-Steady-Distracting.”

For more information, we’re told you can research this issue here.

At the moment, we cannot guarantee the accurate of all this. We need a second source, is that the correct reporter-terminology? Tonight, after the WoW Insider column is put to rest, we’ll get on this.

It sure would explain why Tiggy couldn’t hold that d@mn boss’s aggro though.

I frequent another hunter message board (not sure how you feel about linking to other sites here so I’ll leave it out for the time being) that does a lot of theorycrafting, etc. From their observations as well as some of my own, it seems that its the arcane and autoshot that are causing the bug. I’m not saying this is FACT and that it can’t happen another way - this has just been my personal experience and also what others have experienced.

I have NEVER had the bug occur when I do my normal Misdirect-spiel which is Aimed shot followed by a multi followed by a steady shot. I have had it occur when an autoshot sneaks in there before I hit steady shot.

Oh and after being Surv. from release til BC and then MM post-BC (also re-specced to surv a week ago but changed back shortly) I respecced to BM/MM the other night. I must say, I am loving this spec. I’ve been farming Warbeads for Consortium rep lately and I am just tearing through mobs with hardly any downtime.

I also ran a couple instances and topped the damage meters (although I was doing this as MM also). I just need to adjust my playstyle a little to try and prevent my ravager from dying when the healer decides that pet healing is not needed. Aside from that, this spec kicks ass. I have the 3% damage increase up pretty much constantly, and holy crap - when I hit My Abacus of Violent Odds, Bestial Wrath, Rapid Fire, and have Imp. AotH proc all at the same time - you wanna talk about machine-gun pew-pew.

So thanks Damh for piquing my interest in the BM spec. I don’t think I’ll be changing it for a while.

I haven’t seen this happen yet either. I’ll have to do some testing on it.

And on the comments above, yes, I haven’t been BM since pre-BC, but after reading here for a bit, I did make the change back as well and have been happy since.

MD was broke with the 2.1 patch.

Bout a week later though it’s seemed fine.

Maybe I’m just not using the write shots to proc the bug though.

I have only been double tapping since 2.1 on a MD pull.

Especially in Gruuls, I get to pull the Warlock back to the tank at the front door, I hit Distracting Shot then my Arcane pull shot macro that stops casting. I have not had any problems with that pull since.

I have noticed the bug a couple of times in groups when pop Misdirect in the middle of a fight, I just FD’ed out though.

Also, I have noticed that Misdirect stays active even if you don’t shoot anything. In Kara, I drop and explosion trap and then the MT Pulls an AOE group. Just before they get to the trap I use MD and then cast volly on the group. As long as you stand there and don’t shoot or mele anything ALL that aggro goes to the MT for teh 30 second duration. If you dropped your trap soon enought the cool down is up and you can drop another before MD is up. You are now AOEing like a mage w/o the aggro :)

Chris - yeah if you cancel the MD after the second shot but before the third you avoid the bug altogether. Its the third shot thats causing the problem. Strangely it only happens with an auto shot and arcane shot I believe (may just be auto…i forget). If you don’t use auto or arcane for your third shot though you should be fine.

As far as the aoe thing goes - no one is sure if it is a bug or not but aoe effects do not eat up MD charges. This is actually pretty useful sometimes. In botanica when you have to aoe the flower things you can cast MD on the tank, drop an explosive trap and let the mobs run into it - all the threat goes to the tank. Then cast Volley and all the threat from that goes to the tank. Then you can Hit multi and those three shots will go to the tank and eat up the three MD charges.

Personally, I have a feeling this is gonna be fixed shortly. I can’t imagine that the devs intended for MD to work like this with AoEs but hell, enjoy it while you can.

Correct, the bug won’t get you if you use an “alternate shot” as your 3rd, for example, scorpid sting.

The first few days of the patch, I thought something was off. Even my screecher, Oomkin, couldn’t hold agro from the misdirected misdirect.

I have a couple of theories on that last sentence…. /evil laugh

I think the taunt and growls got nerfed to be honest. A mistake I’m sure but they don’t seem to be working like they were prior to the patch.
