Yay for Level 40!

“Hey BRK, My hunter, Zaw on Echo Isles, has hit the early 40s. Is there any reason not to switch from leather to mail armor - keeping in mind to look for plus agility and stamina? Thanks! Katherine”

Ah, level 40. Our first mount - grey Ram - and the chance to go to the auction house and blow some serious coinage on mail armor.

The reason we switch from leather to mail is for the additional armor points. That’s it, that’s all. There are many examples of people wearing some super-duper leather gear all the way to 70. When you switch out your leather for mail, do so for the stats, not just for the +armor benefit. Don’t be in a huge rush either, the mail gear will come.

Of course we want the better armor as it benefits our pet. As we showed in a previous post, 30% of our armor rating is applied directly to out pet’s armor. For grinding, we think that’s a Big Deal.
But we’ll say it again for excessive clarity: Don’t swap leather for mail until the mail is an obvious upgrade in terms of agility, stamina, attack power, or intellect.

He’s right, if the stats aren’t an upgrade don’t upgrade. — Way back when I was leveling up close to 40, I planned ahead and started loading up on the upgrades beforehand, so I was able to switch to mail gear the minuet I hit 40. I had also stopped wasting money on leather gear around the lowe to mid 30’s, just because I anticipated this change. This way I had all new gear, and a mount the minuet I turned 40.
If you haven’t planned ahead, and don’t have tons of spare cash, or can’t find any good upgraes, don’t sweat it so much. Get that mount 1st if its more of a benefit to you.

There’s a TON of uncommon Scorpid scale crafted armor for abouts lvl 40 with some GREAT agility stats.

Look into haveing someone craft a set for you.

it’s the AP AND the AGI that you need IN mail, there’s no excuse to keep wearing leather.

@Guy: How about lack of money? That’s a good reason to keep wearing leather…

I myself am a level 54 hunter, and I still have a fair amount of leather items on. Mainly because I haven’t concerned myself with getting many gear upgrades.

Guy is right - the Scorpid scale set is the reason Hunters should be leatherworkers - easy to get mats at lvl 40 from the scorpids in Tanaris and the patterns drop from the Wastewander guys nearby.

The Devilsaur Leggings and Gloves are great leather items that you can get in the early 50s and will do you easily till you hit outlands.
