Misdirection - Further Analysis
“If I drop Misdirection on a tank how does it work with multiple mobs and multiple attacks? Logic would suggest if I misdirect, and then multi-shot a group of 3 mobs, they’re all going to the tank, but I’m not sure. If this not the case, please let me know. SPC Jones, Iraq”
Let’s get the tooltip text and take a look, just so we don’t make anything up.
“Threat caused by your next three attacks is redirected to the target raid member. Caster and target can only be affected by one Misdirection spell at a time. Effect lasts 30 sec.”
Notice how this does not say, “Threat caused to a single mob,” or otherwise quantify the number of mobs. It’s the threat caused by your attacks, period. If you Misdirect and fire a Multi Shot, the threat from that shot, whether the ammo hits one, two or three mobs, will be redirected to the recipient of the Misdirection spell.
What else could you use like this? Volley. Volley is a single attack and can damage as many mobs as fit in its radius. All the threat caused by the Volley attack will be redirected. Misdirecting with a Volley on a swarm of mobs before an AoE-class nukes them is a nice way of saving a clothie some repair bills.
Misdirection also works with traps. Want to pull a patrol to the tank around a corner without firing a shot? Move the tank to his safe position, cast Misdirection, drop the Explosive trap in the patrol’s path, and when the patrol hits it they will react as if the tank had dropped the trap himself and run right to him.
If it would ever be useful we don’t know, but Raptor Strike with Misdirection would also work. Engineering bombs are attacks and they would work with Misdirection too. So would hitting a mob with throwing knives or even whacking ‘em with your fishing pole.
But a Body Pull would not work with Misdirection because you did not “attack”; you just happened to wander into the aggro-radius of the mob.

OMG why did I never think of misdirection working with volley. That is such a great idea..since one weakness of the warrior tanking class is our inability to hold onto mobs during aoes. (unless we spend awhile ahead of time getting threat nicely built up on each mob)
-One happy tank
misdirectio works with traps? So if I let the tank pull, and misdirect and lay explosive, the first three ticks of the trap would be misdirected? Or would aggro from all the ticks be misdirected (one trap) and I’d still have two shots to fire under misdirection? I didn’t think traps worked with this, but had never tried it.
A trap is an attack. All damage from that attack will be Misdirected, not just the first three ticks. You’ll still have two more attacks left.
Just another testament for why the BRK ROCKS! I can’t wait to get home to try it!
Especially awesome at Karazhan on the packs before and after Moroes. Drop an Explosive Trap and cast Volley.
Helps at keeping those pesky mages behind you at DamageMeters.
Now that’s a new aspect I didn’t consider - for instance, using volley in the ballroom in Khara would imply that you’ve established a bit of aggro on all the mobs for the tank, so come the first heal, the non-misdirected won’t peel off to the healer anymore… Shall try that next time I’m in the instance.
BUT, a very important thing to take into account is that if you use misdirect with Multishot, if it hits three mobs, it counts as three seperate attacks and depletes the misdirection charges completely. So don’t go thinking you can aimed/multi/distract, or you’ll have mobs back on you instead of the tank!
I have read elsewhere that multishot counts as separate attacks, but i’m not sure. I’d like to see some testing on this.
Quick, somebody, find a 3 or 4 pull, misdirect a tank, multishot, and then aimed shot one of them.
Misdirection is only good for killing that pesky lock or shadow priest who’s trying to knock you off the top of the damage meter.

Although “body” pulling around corners isn’t possible for the hunter, I assume it’s possible for the tank? ie: send the misdirected tank out of line-of-sight and pop a mob, and watch the mob charge right past you, round the corner and onto the tank.
Just tested it. Misdirection does not work with Volley. Sucks, don’t it? (FYI, tested this in Steamvaults with all the gnomes. Didn’t use a single point of Misdirection). Multi-shot, on the other hand, used all 3, so that’d be good for bringing 3 mobs to a tank all at once. I’ll have to try the trap thing next.
No Volley? Could’ve sworn we’ve done that before.
We don’t want to give misinformation, so we’ll definitely try this to confirm, and adjust the post accordingly.
Thank you for the testing!
K, after a lot more testing, I can definitely say that Volley is not affected by Misdirection. However, traps are (Explosive trap seems to count for up to 3, not just 1 if it’s multiple mobs), Multi-Shot is the same as Misdirection, and Distracting Shot also works (for what it may be worth).
Also! Viper String does not work, but Serpent and Scorpid Sting do. I’ll have to test my engineering bombs next..
Is this a definite no no, then?
As the poor mage in our Kara group who gets Ballroom AOE duties, it would be great to increase my survival rate to maybe as much as 25%.
volley does not count for misdirection. Also, I can’t be sure that trap works for it either. I can’t be sure about the trap though. I used it on aoe pulls, and as soon as the first mob hit it, the misdirect icon disappeared. I don’t know if it burned the first three ticks that fast or if it just cancels the misdirect. I believe it’s the latter.
Traps do work with Misdirection: tested and approved. At least Immolation and Explosive, and it appears even Snake Trap (not positive on that though)
I am crying so much inside…I was so excited about the misdirection with volley thing. I made a post on my guild forum…I started telling other tanks that I know all about it and now I’ll have to go back and tell them I lied.
-a load of tankLove to BRK for passing out such faulty info
I remember Volley seemed to work in the past… but remember MisD was bugged there for a while and it might have gotten a few fresh bugs from the latest fixes.
