Rouges! Um… Rogues!
“The other day I was messing around in Hellfire Peninsula and saw a 67 rouge and decided to attack. Me being 67 as well I figured it would be at least a fair fight. I switched to track hidden as he vanished before I marked him or could even get a shot off. To my surprise I could see him. I remember a long time ago when ever I used track hidden I couldn’t see the rouge till it was right up on me.
“Now I’m watching this dagger spec rouge try to sneak around me going very slow. I’m wondering was this a fluke or does track hidden actually work now. Because I’ll tell you once he got too close to me and I marked him he was surprised as hell. To top that off when I trapped him and he immediately vanished after it broke I was able to re-mark him and finish the job. This went on for three more fights, all ending with his eventual demise. I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time now and figure you have what it takes to figure this one out. SSgt Means.”
Rogue Dynamics are not our speciality, however we do have some insight into Hunter-Rogue Interplay. Let’s say you see a rogue and you lay a Hunter’s Mark down on him. He could do the following:
He Vanishes which wipes the Hunter’s Mark and you cannot track him, period.
He Steathes which will not wipe the Hunter’s Mark and you can track him using Track Hidden.
Track Hidden is contentious because many hunters will say they’ve never seen a stealthed rogue using it. We have. We have tracked stealth druids and rogues many times. We usually we “see” a steathed rogue who is attempting to sneak around us and get to our back, (which is why we always keep a fresh Freezing Trap right behind us.)
If your rogue Vanished to rid himself of the Hunter’s Mark, then came back and Stealthed, you would see him on your minimap if you had Track Hidden active, thus, you could mark him again. What a rogue can or cannot do while Vanished, we’re not sure, but when we fight a Rogue and he Vanishes, we usually don’t see him again.
A Fun Tip for Messing With Stealthed Rogues: With your Track Hidden you see him, but he doesn’t know you see him. You want to “funnel” him to a stealthed rogue buddy of your own. Pop a Flare into an area where you don’t want him to go. Any rogue worth his salt will avoid your Flare like the plague, so he’ll move away from the Flare, directly into the path of your steathed rogue. At the perfect moment, when the enemy rogue’s back is facing your rogue, you pop a Hunter’s Mark on the enemy which allows your rogue to see him, and he slices and dices and rips the enemy a new one while you sit there and laugh.
You can do a similar trick with your pet if he has been trained with Prowl, but there is less laughing-time as you have to kite the rogue before he dies.

Most likely the rogue in question did not have any points in Master of Deception. Generally, if you are the same level as a rogue, you should be able to see him stealthed at a reasonable distance, unless he has points in this talent, which raises his effective stealth level. With MOD, each point raises the level of stealth…so instead of him being 67, he becomes 72, rendering him mostly invisible to you. This plays into the equation of whether or not you can see the stealthed rogue at all. Another factor is that when a rogue vanishes, he enters an increased stealth state for 10 seconds.
generally, for rogues, when you see that a hunter has marked you, you vanish and run. you have to assume the hunter has turned on track hidden and you do what you can to get out of there. surprise is the absolute #1 key to our success, and once that is gone…we have little chance except to use what abilities we have to escape.
doom
Thank you, Doom. We can always count on you for Rogue Wisdom.
Thats so awesome there is nothing better than catching a rogue and then plugging it full of arrow while your pet shreds him/her to pieces. In the level 19 bracket of Warsong Gulch if a rogue is not twinked and I catch him like that he is dust in seconds…very satisfying
Basic rogue stealth deteriorates as you level up from previous automatic increases. My L39 rogue couldn’t pick pocket an L40 MOB in spite of five points in Master of Deception. At L40 my rogue automatically received a boost to stealth and was back in business. It is very likely that the rogue in question had no points in Master of Deception and is three levels short of a much needed boost in base stealth.
My understanding of Track Hidden is that aside from showing stealthed players/mobs on the minimap, it also increases the Hunter’s stealth detection slightly, helping you detect rogues from further away. The ability is controversial, arguing about it anytime it comes up on the wow forums, and I haven’t done any methodical experimentation with rogue friends yet. But my experience spamming my tracker macro in bg’s seems to confirm that Track Hidden improves stealth detection slightly:
/castsequence Track Humanoids, Track Hidden
I’m looking forward to getting my Orc hunter to 70 and turning him into a rogue hunter, with Powerful Earthstorm Diamond and Foreman’s Reinforced Helmet, among other anti-rogue gear.
I will have to admit I do love a good chase of a rogue to their demise (just feels right). I have gained respect for our fellow foe though…they are deadly in their shameless attacks from behind. Caught in their cycle of three button combinations they can quickly destroy a hunter. It’s not the rogue I despise. No. I have respect for them. But a druid…they are quite possibly the most cowardice things I’ve ever encountered. I live to play the BG’s just to catch one of these pathetic, wannabe rogues. They run just at the sight of a hunter. I’ve even seen them run the moment I cast a mark on them. It’s hilarious. At least rogues are something to be feared with their deadly three button combo. My cat could kill a druid. I’ve only had to do it once. It’s quite a disgraceful. Well my point is have respect and honor for an admirable foe and b**ch slap the Sh*& out of a druid. Thank you.
Ah rogues vs hunters… an exciting matchup. A hunter with track stealth will almost always spot the rogue if looking directly at him. Unless the rogue sports full Master of Deception and maby a stealth increasing item or two. Pure luck also helps as there is a “dice roll” to see if the rogue is spotted.
“Pop a Flare into an area where you don’t want him to go. Any rogue worth his salt will avoid your Flare like the plague, so he’ll move away from the Flare, directly into the path of your steathed rogue.”
Brilliant. And exactly how my rogue got her ass handed to her in the arena the other day.
I just need to say something about all you lurking buggers.
I usually farm with my “don`t touch me, i don`t kill you” aura on.
Netherwing mines, horde rogue passes by attacking a mob. We`re cool. Horde lock passes by, and we`re again cool. After some minutes, my bags get full and i decide to switch to dual-wielding 2 x grey sword to free one measly slot in my bags. Sword skill not even levelled to the max…
Did i mention my cat Senzo is lev57? Or the fact that we`re BM specced?
Ok, after a few mobs i`m totally enjoying myself meleeing the mobs with my grey swords and BAM, ambush! Pathetic little bugger. Checked out my lowbie pet and me dual wielding crappy items…
I`m no pushover, so i re-assert my aura from the start and some 15 seconds later, dust settles to reveal one dead (pathetic) rogue, one dead mob, me on 4k health and Senzo, happily returning with blood still dripping from his jaws… What a pretty sight.
I even got enought time to /dance with the mofo before he released.
My point? Nah, nothing usefull really. I was just spreading the joy.
Great blog BRK, i`m a regular now…
bah, Senzo is in fact lev 67.. dumb typo
