SWAPS and the Steelers Will Win at Least 10
OK, since a lot of people have been saying, “What the bloody bleepin’ heck is SWAPS” we’re gonna give a link and a quick and dirty explanation, mostly, but not entirely, stolen from said site.
How SWAPS Works - What You and BRK Care About
1. The guild grants all raiders a fixed balance of points.
2. When an item drops, raiders offer to pay some or all of their points to the other raiders for looting rights to the item.
3. The raider who offers to pay the most points wins the item, while the spent-points are equally divided among the other raiders.
Example: Gloves Of Uberness drop, BRK bids 100 points. He wins. The 100 points are deducted from his account and the other nine raider get eleven points added to their accounts.
SWAPS - Very Basic Technical Stuff
SWAPS is an addon that only one person need load. Let’s say that MRGM is our raid leader and he runs the SWAPS addon. If BRK wants to bid on an item, we send MRGM a tell:
/w MRGM 100
SWAPS will broadcast to the raid that BRK has bid 100 points. If we want to know our current points balance, we can send this tell:
/w MRGM balance
There’s a lot more “how to implement SWAPS” details at the website that most of us don’t care about; it’s for the person running the addon. But here’s the link.
If you’re happy running a “Just Roll, D@mnit!” raid, this isn’t for you. But if you want to do a DKP system, we highly recommend this addon and system. It’s fair, consistent, and above-board.
Note: We couldn’t think of a picture to go with SWAPS, so we’re putting a shot of the soon-to-be-prison-bound Michael “I Electrocute Dogs” Vick. When the men with three-initial jackets come a-knockin’ at your door, you’d best be ready to grab ankles, baby. You heard it here first, Falcons fans, Joey Harrington is gonna be your starter this year.
Note #2: BRK is a huge football fan, loves his fantasy league - which he wins regularly - and as the season approaches will be inserting many football references into his blog. So our bias is publicly known, we’re both Steeler and Jets fans.

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!
Gonna be Culpepper.
IF the Falcons are smart, they’ll sign him today.
BTW: Broncos all the way.
I know that this is going to get me some serious -BRK cool points…
Go BROWNS!
Steelers Stink!
(Hey Cleveland fans are damn loyal, what can I say)
SWAPS does sound like a pretty cool system. I was wondering what would happen if you aren’t a 100% regular group. — If a few people swap out here and there, wouldn’t they basically get screwed?
There is a vesting period. Up to 1000 points. Your first raid you start with 200 points as soon as the Swaps addon runner vests the raid. Next raid you have your 200 and when that raid starts you get 200 more up to 1000.
So you cannot have new people just jump into your raid and “steal” your loot. They have to have raided with that system to become fully “vested” at 1000 points.
Be careful on your bidding. You dont want to bid all of your point on uber gloves and then next raid you have 0 points to bid on uber axe.
This system is a very friendly system to use, but you have to be very mindful of your Swaps points.
@Rizzah -
SWAPS deals with it fairly well. You are granted 1000 points initially upon joining the system, but you only get 200 points per raid, starting with the second raid. This is to prevent a newcomer from having a higher balance than half the people present, buying something, and then never coming back. So it takes 6 runs for you to get the full 1000 points. You still get credit for points other people spend.
If someone leaves the system eventually, you can remove them from the swaps database. This adjusts everyone’s points - if the person who left had over 1000 points, everyone gets a few. If they had less, everyone loses a few. Basically, the person has to leave with 1000 points. Since these changes happen across the entire vested database, everyone gains or loses the same amount, so it has little comparative effect.
I add anyone who raids with us to our SWAPS system, because they’re contributing, and thus they deserve a shot at phat epix.
Hence why DCoE ended up with some nice shoes one night. Whoo Shadow Priest deathiness!
No, they wouldnt.
THey come in with their 100 points (assuming you start with 100). So they dont lose out.
The person who runs and gets no drops will also get more swaps points - so when something they do want drops, they have more to bid with.
And because spent points are divided between players, the amount of points never increases overall, so there is no ‘inflation’ where the hardcore end up with lots of DKP, and the new people wont get anything for a month.
To answer your question.
It is a 0 sum system. Your taking points out of the system will never hurt you or others. If you stop raiding, oh well, you will still have whatever points you had, and if you start back up again you will have whatever points you left with.
thats what is good about this system. No one gets screwed, unless you are horrible manager with your own points.
And in my guild if something drops that is clearly a class item (ie Legacy) they will let you bid the minimum without competition.
C-O-L-T-S
Bring it.
I am with Doom.
You have made yourself an enemy [again] today, Steelers fan!
@Dwayne -
That’s what has happened with AC a few times in Kara so far. For example, Emerald ripper dropped, the rogue got it for minimum bid. Pally healing bracers dropped, the Pally tank got them for minimum bid, because we’d rather see them go to someone who can even potentially use them rather than get a shard.
Just because you’re using a points system does not mean that common sense has to go out the window. It just means there is a totally above-board way to settle disputes over loot.
And honestly, I know we could probably get by in Kara with just rolling need/greed. But we wanted to get the guild used to the system BEFORE it became strictly necessary, but when it would still be somewhat applicable.
you must be located somewhere on the East coast to be a steeles and jets fan >.< i prefer the real football myself …… soccer for those who haven’t figured it out yet.
There is really only one question to ask after such and awesome post.
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!!!
I personally think it’s going to be flat out sad if the Steelers win less than 10. Have you seen the schedule? Bills, Dolphins, 49′ers, Browns, Cardinals… please
Go Panthers!
Please. Everyone knows the Saints are going all the way this year.
/target Michael Vick
/destroy
also:
/target Redskins offensive line
/cast Prayer of Fortitude, Prayer of Spirit, Trueshot Aura
/see it makes no damn difference
/weep
SWAPS sounds very cool. When more of the guild hit 70 will have to mention it to the Guild Mistress of Unholy Appetites.
Oh, and go Pats!
/forlorn sigh
We’re crushed. We knew it was too good to be true, that deep down there was something wrong with you. We knew our happy-shiny blissful bubble of BRK awe would someday be burst….but the STEELERS?!!!
/sigh It’s enough to make us cry in our Moonberry juice.
Aerlian and Petunia.
For The Record: No BRK Cool Points shall ever be deducted based upon whatever god-awful, non-competitive, criminal-employing, poofy-uniform-wearing, perpetually losing football team that has paid you enough in Candy Corn and Pixie Sticks for you to root for them. No more worrying, OK?
Who you calling criminal-employing?
=P
He must be thinking of the University of Minnesota…
Thank god my true love (besides the Browns) didn’t hire Glenn Mason…
Go Bucks, and Browns!
Michigan Stinks.
SWAPS sounds like a pretty interesting system. I’ve also had a lot of success with Suicide Kings.
You know who else has had a lot of success?
The COLTS. When they won the Superbowl.
How would you handle a guild running multiple 10-mans at the same time? Would all be hooked into the same SWAPS points system?
@ Hillarie
Swaps is a database that is uploaded downloaded from a server. the Swaps runner downloads the current tallies just prior to the raid.
It is not a system. It is a .Lua file that you upload to your .wtf folder just prior to the raid starting. Once the raid is finished, you take that same file and upload it back to the swaps server. So you could have a gazillion 10 mans running at one time. It would not affect anything.
GO Jets!!!! Proud Mean Green Fan for the 32 Years I have been on this earth!!!!!
