At Least It Wasn’t The Animal Guy

BRK » 01 August 2007 » In Raids, WoWInsider »

Our 3:00pm WoW Insider publishing time has been delayed until 3:30pm so that more BlizzCon coverage can swamp the front page of WoW Insider. We feel like we got bumped for Charo on Johnny Carson.

Tonight is our guild’s first attempt at two simultaneous Karazhan groups. We hereby bet that at least three people will be no-shows, forcing a merger of the two groups and making seven people really, really angry.

I bet everyone but 1 will show, causing us to have to PuG someone who will then Ninja everything due to lack of Master Looter.

I was just going to say…

Me thinks BRK is too busy doing last minute writing for those slave drivers at WI to respond to anything today..

And then I refreshed the page to find this.

And I never even read last weeks. Fo’shame.

Considering that my guild blew up in classic style last night, there are at least 7 lvl 70’s that are looking for a place to call home.. I’ll ship them to your server, I certainly don’t want them back here.

Imagine this.. login to check mail, toon was logged out next to mailbox. Click on mailbox, and see “Halabar has been promoted to GM” within 3 seconds…

Is it just me, or is Kara and the keying process destroying guilds?.. Prior to BC, did the end-game raids wreak this much havoc upon guilds?..

Perhaps it is the extended lvl range now, but it seems that only huge guilds can survive, and that smaller guilds can’t support players in the full range of lvls. And it seems that even raiding guilds are a constant turnover. No wonder I see more and more lvl 70s guildless.

Perhaps once the Kara and black temple race is over, guilds will settle down and become more stable. But the progression rush and keying seems to be destroying them now.

LOL – Biznicks scope? That’s what you got for us this week?

No mention of the uber pant armor chants that LW can do?

I don’t feel like I got my monies worth this week.

Your GM and Raid Leaders need to have a plan in place for what to do if you can only field 2 groups.

    Drama will ensue.

We’ve lost at least 3 or 4 people when they found out they weren’t going to Kara and gquit. Several others were very mad. but have stayed in the guild.

*laughs* How much did you pay for it this week? *winks*

Hunters do need to know what they should be shopping for - the enchanting oils in particular aren’t very well known, but quite popular among those who DO know about it.

Do they keep you from crossposting the entries? Elsewise, I don’t see why those who don’t really need five blizzcon updates with zero content can’t just snag your info here. =]

    /nod @ Karl

Having just started on a normal server for the break in the constant PvP on my other server I am seeing a real lack of the “good old days” of helpful folks in guilds, heck even the guild I am in do I see /g chat more that 2 times a night and that is when folks log in or out. It is VERY sad.

Good luck on not having 7 folks pissed!! Maybe think of a punishment that involves honey, ants and some rope for the no shows.

    I’m just sayin’

Karl said, “Prior to BC, did the end-game raids wreak this much havoc upon guilds?..”

    YES!!!!

End-game raid have forever been the bane of guild harmony in WoW. The sad thing is….it is mostly due to peoples greed.

If someone can’t go for a week or feels that they deserved that purple over the n00b that won it, they just /gquit or make some drama that affects many people in the guild.

Due to the system for end-game raiding, they have made it almost impossible for small, tight guilds of friends who have been gaming together for years to enjoy raid content. You have to do things that will invite drama. Things like, make the guild bigger by dropping your recruiting standards(we tried that for MC and BWL and, while successful, it almost caused our guild to fall apart) or you could try and form alliances with other small guilds.

Either way, greed gets in the way. Most people do not have the same attitude towards others and the game that we have. The exception may be BRK themselves. We could care less whether we get to go to the raid or not as long as someone else from the guild gets in and has fun. We also could not care less if we go an entire run or 12 without loot for our class dropping. If our friends are enjoying the game and experiencing new content then we are happy. We know our turn will come.

Sorry for rambling. I have quite strong feelings about this subject.

  12. Zemulos on August 1st, 2007 8:26 pm

    Brk-

No shows is a problem. Do like I’ve done. Plan the groups ahead of time. The people from group one who show up get to go, pulling from group 2 for no shows. Then replace the people pulled from group two with standbys and make the no shows skip a week, fully knowing its their own fault. If no standbys available, then group two waits on the people not there. People will begin to show up more often.

    Karl-

I’ve posted it before, and you have now too. I believe kara destroys guilds like no other. A guy in my guild that’s been playing wow since inception explained why. In the old days, the raid content required lots of committment and inter guild work and gearing. Today’s 10man raid has too many people who think that lvl 70 = ready to raid, and not enough people understanding the importance of gear. If 5 people who want to run a raid in kara can’t even clear a SL run by themselves? The answer is no. I lost about 10 lvl 70s from my guild when I finally took a firm stance on this. We were down to only about 7 in guild, and only 3 of those serious about raiding. Since that time, I’ve built my guild back up to 54 lvl 70s and growing daily. If you don’t exclude the people who don’t committ, then the elite players will not come. It’s just like dating, you hve to believe you’re good enough to be selective before you CAN be selective.

  13. Doomilias on August 1st, 2007 8:30 pm

eh, people need to realize that if you start getting gear from heroics and exalted faction rep, kara gear isnt *that* huge of an upgrade. at least imo. i prefer to balance my gear itemization and dont really care to wear an epic just because its an epic if it skews my balance in any certain direction.

  14. tinwhisker on August 1st, 2007 8:37 pm

No shows will happen. We weren’t able to field two teams for a while and had to PuG some players to fill the second or merge the teams and hope for the best.

It sucks and some people will get mad. It’s the job of the guild leader and officers to keep people together and motivated.

One idea if you do end up with no shows, is to make sure the remainder are able to do a heroic or swap into the Kara group.

And as a counter-point, Karazhan made my guild stronger and turned us into a recognizable name on the realm. We were a close-knit guild of maybe 12-15 active players and one month into TBC we were into Kara. Shortly there after we were up to a crap-ton of 70’s (players and alts) and running two groups. We’re now into the 25-mans.

There’s been trouble with people feeling slighted and we have invited the occasional rotten egg, but you just deal with them and keep moving forward.

Be reasonable with gear restrictions and fair with selecting raid members in each group.

i gave up on kara i suck at getting rep so i dont have any heroic keys so no good gear to speak of and cant get a group for arc to get last key frag so i started a new druid and am not going to worry if i ever get to go to kara

So I just wrote this autobiography of the guilds I’ve been in and my raiding experience, and when I went to proof read it I said: “no one would enjoy this!”

To sum up what I was attempting to get at.. Having tried it almost everyway…

Making a weekly schedule with an “A” team and a “B” team is the best method. To ensure it works though you have to rotate all the members between each other week to week. No one is ALWAYS on the “A” team and everyone gets a chance to play with different class balances and styles.

This is copied and pasted directly from my guild forums:

Tuesday (04/24/07) (Attunemen, Moroes, Opera, Curator?)

    Group A

    Bokushisan (killed Opera)
    Anneke
    Bitterblood
    Milbenry
    Bloodyguts
    Senavia
    Ehyeh
    Baloc
    Shiori
    Tirana

    Group B (killed Curator)

    H.E.A.P.
    Knifey
    Faeria
    Stu
    Guywired (Therus for attunemen)
    Dalwin
    Maeglor
    Bb
Parsec (Therus filled in for Curator)
    Kalinos

These groups would be mixed up week to week. And a simple note of where a group left off will help decide what the next night group will consist of while at the same time giving everyone a chance to raid.

TOO often guilds have attendance issues and combine groups, this is not going to help with progression. It leaves more people gearless and not learning the fights. A guild MUST stick to it’s guns and if the people from a certain raid “pool” for a week don’t show up then that rotation gets cancelled all together. Typically even if you did combine groups to make one operational raid the left over people won’t have the class balance needed to form a second group.

But if you post the format that my guild has used in your forums then people have the opportunity to talk about which days they can and can’t raid. Everything gets planned out and people show up because they know that others are counting on them.

No plan is full proof, and it’s always going to help to recruit dedicated raiders over friends who’s attendance is spotty. But once again it just comes down to letting people know what is expected of them.

People will be bitter if you combine groups and they got stuck in the one that doesn’t get to raid. Why? Because that wasn’t the plan and they were chosen to sit on the sideline and NOT raid. If you stick to a MADE plan then people will be much more forgiving when it comes to raid schedules that don’t work.. loot distribution.. whatnot.

Lastly, I do agree with Zem about being selective, but if you’re puging that hunter in all greens week after week just so you can field a raid, effing recruit him already so people know that their spot is going to get taken if they don’t show up.

+5 BRK Cool Points to Adrus for logging on.

    Gotta start somewhere, right? :)

  19. Guy on August 1st, 2007 10:05 pm

Why do BRK cool points always come in stacks of five?

And is anyone actually keeping track of who has how many points?

    AND..

Can these points be used to purchase anything? like I don’t know..

The BRK Quartermaster is the only known entity or enterprise that accepts BRK Cool Points as currency. However, it’s been months since he was last seen. Something to do with importing beef exposed to hoof-n-mouth, we think.

Actually, we not sure, we cannot be positive, we may be crazy, but we think that nobody has more than 5.

  21. Karl on August 1st, 2007 10:48 pm

    regarding the guild mess…

Since I’m not ready for Kara myself, I decided the guild will be a leveling guild, and will “graduate” folks to raiding guilds. Perhaps this will change, but with the core group gone, I see no other choice.

I’ve seen 4 guilds now blow up due to Kara, and I don’t plan on repeating it again. Perhaps if a new core group develops, I’ll feed differently, but I never really planned on being a raider anyway.

I do wonder, however, what all these players are going to do when they’ve burned through Kara and the Temple, and burned all their bridges along the way. There are going to be a lot of bored 70s sitting around, with no one left to associate with ingame, since they ticked off so many folks along the way.

Hmm… What was the question for that answer?

I’ve never been much fan on raiding, not now, not before TBC. All that juicy stuff takes AAAAGGGGEEESSS to drop meaning constant raiding with people you know so it won’t be constant wiping, and months and months before you get all those nice drops…

Things will probably be a bit better when Blizzard finally implements that “smart-drop” system, that is, after they disable it again after implementing and fix it… :)

Maybe then I’ll get to raid a bit, but as it is, even instancing is not something I do very often… Heck, I don’t even yet have a 70! Only a 65 feral druid! And a couple other low level ones. I’m enjoying my 40 hunter very much now and will probably be playing it for a while longer. Thanks in part to this blog! :)

Sounds like our guilds are just about at the same spot. We thought we had enough people for 2 Kara groups about a month ago. We had been using our forums to get people signed up. The two groups failed miserably due to so many no-shows. We’d have about 12 out of 28 “active” members online. So, we went back to 1 group, encouraging the others online to run Heroics.

Fast-forward to last week: We started using the GEM mod (Guild Event Manager). We, the officers, spammed the /g channel multiple times a night telling people to use GEM as that was the only way they would get into raids. Almost overnight, we had more sign ups (than vs. the forums) and we started again with 2 full raids this week. We even had 5 people sitting on the sidelines in case anyone needed to bail. So, for us, GEM is really a great tool. (Oh, and recruiting dependable people doesn’t hurt either.)

  26. Zemulos on August 2nd, 2007 2:02 pm

    LOL, “someone”!

Hmm… What was the question for that answer?

The question was in MY question. And if you ahve to feel the pain of organizing groups, you’ll understand :( The quetion was… “hey zem, can I go to kara?” “how about now?” “now?” “how about now?” “why do you want to know my dps?” “what’s dps?”

The “what’s dps” was almost my favorite question. It may have been. But there was another question posed to me that was an automatic, “no you can’t go to kara” question too…”how do I put pet talents on my pet bar?”

“you click and drag from your spellbook” < -- see I'm nice.

    “what’s my spellbook?”

“how do you hit lvl 70 and not know what your spellbook is?” < -- it was a long day after all :(

“and in answer to your next question, NO.” (referring to kara) No I didn’t say that, but boy I sure wanted to.

I’m hoarding my brk pts, it took me too long to get them. There will be no spending, only admiring.

Tried to get three groups this week for kara. Only two running, third is lazy people that don’t show up reliably. Lots of bitching ensued. I might not run kara groups next week, I’m getting tired of the shit. And now, I am getting endless questions about why I’m not setting up 25man stuff. I launched a tirade. Gear is not holding up our guild anymore, committment and attendance is.
