Auction House Gear?

BRK » 12 August 2007 » In Addons, Blog, Gear »

We always cruise the Auction House for gear even though we know there’s nothing there we’ll be able to use. Hasn’t been for a long time, actually, but we just can’t seem to break the habit.

Good thing.

We found this amulet on the AH for a measly 35 gold. If it hadn’t been an upgrade for us we would’ve bought it just to resell, (there was a similar “Of The Physician” amulet on the AH for 155 gold). Yes it’s a quest item but we’ve never found an ethereum prison key, and even if we did we’d only have a 5% chance of getting this particular ring in return, so we nabbed it PDQ.

For our situation it really is better than our [Earthen Mark of Razing]. Aran is our nemesis and we’re making a quasi-Max Health set of gear to use against him. The +13 Hit we’re giving up for the almost 300 health is a good trade off for this fight, as far as we’re concerned.

If Attumen drops the [Worgen Claw Necklace] for us then this necklace goes in the bank, of course. But for 35 gold, how can we say no for now?

Notice how nicely Rating Buster helps us identify the differences between the pieces of gear. This is the kind of math we used to do in our head and on paper, now it’s computed and displayed automatically. Great addon.

Also, it should be noted that we’re taking screenshots using the tga format and converting them to png for posting. We think they look much better than the jpg format WoW switched to. If you want to force your WoW client to take screenshots in tga mode, we recommend these two commands:

/console screenshotformat tga
/console screenshotquality 10

You only have to type them once; it will retain those settings through shut-down and restart.

Good call on the Ratings Buster addon. I’m swapping equipment left and right now, trying to get my RAP and RC to a better level. I did the typical “gotta wear mail at level 40″ thing for a few days before I figured out that leather gives me better agility stats. As for the armor, if I actually get hit by a mob I’m doing something wrong, right?

Agi means nothing if you dont have mana to do abilities with, leather has no int or mp5.

The prison keys drop off the Zaxxis mobs, southwest of area 52, NOT the ones in the north. They drop usually 4 to 6 an hour. I farm them all the time, to sell and get the good lootz, and random faction.
I got that neck, and cannot decide whether to give it to my hunter or save it for my feral Druid, now 68.

“Agi means nothing if you dont have mana to do abilities with, leather has no int or mp5.”

Probably true at 70, but from what “Evil Sheep” said, I’d say he’s closer to 40 than 70! :)

I’m in the same situation and I have plenty of Leather gear with +INT… In fact, I only got 2 mail items so far… Don’t forget that not all leather wearers past 40 are Rogues: Druids also wear leather and they also use +INT, so there are some +INT leather items around… And even a decent amount with +INT,+STA,+AGI…

According to wowhead, there are 123 leather items for 40+ that have all 3 stats: +INT, +STA, +AGI and 249 mail items with all 3 stats…

So, for 40~50 or even 40~60, life in mostly leather is actually doable for a hunter…

Yep, I’m still in the 40s. Right now my Agi is 210, and my Int is 67. I need to pick up a couple pieces to boost my Int, but I haven’t had any real problems with running out of mana. Also, as a Blood Elf, I keep mana tap fully charged, and on the rare occasion that I do get a “mana low” warning, blasting arcane torrent kicks me back somewhere around 90-100 mana, bumping me to enough that I can fire a concussive shot or (worst case) feign death.

Oh my have the tables have turned! I remember a Gem socket suggestion post awhile back with BRK scoffing at STA gems for Hunters, yet here we are..

Get some PVP gear to augment your Raid gear for certain fights, it’s most flexible and works like a charm. I swap into AR/PVP gear which is heavy on Resist and Stamina for Curator. I’m almost in full PVP gear on Netherspite so I can stay powered by a blue beam even longer with a huge HP pool and for insurance against his constant AE.

    No STA, no thanks. =)

Oh…and about the prison keys…you have to have done the quests to get em, and you can’t get the quests until honored with consortium, TOTALLY worth it. Fastest faction ever.

Out of those ‘123′ leather items with all 3 stats, how many are useless for hunters? From the first page alone, around 40(of 50) can’t even be equipped by hunters.

The rest of it is +dmg/healing, +healing or has loads of strength on… The low level items are understandable, its a leather-mail transition for hunters, but anything above 50 that is leather with int/agi/stam on is just not worth it.

I have a druid alt, I’ve seen the gear available and some is bad for druids let alone hunters.

I have +6 str from gear on my hunter, and thats from the +6stats enchant lol.

You’re right: I just added a “useable by Hunter” filter and the 123 in leather drop to 45, whereas the 249 in mail drop only a few to 232.

Still, the point I was trying to make still holds: just because you have hit 40 and *can* use mail, doesn’t mean you *HAVE* to switch every piece for a mail item… Especially when mail items for that level are not necessarily *better* in stats other than the 4th stat in the “normal” stats list for hunters: Armor.

@Megan - Kinda off topic, but what are you using on Netherspite? I don’t think any of our locks use stam gear for him, the drain life spam with the blue beam’s increased damage usually keeps them up for a whole phase without much if any healing.

There’s a neck piece that drops off Aran that I like a bit more.

If you can take a ‘hit’ to your hit rating, then pick it up instead.

  13. Megan on August 13th, 2007 6:27 pm

@ shutter - Well, all Lock gear is STA gear period, what I meant to say is that I swap in a few more PVP pieces that have more of the iLVL slanted towards STA (Season 2 Gladiator stuff).

I’ll hit around 16K HP, I can tank the blue beam a bit longer in rotations and therefore do much more damage. And while yes, Drain Life during the beam is self sufficient, the damage you could be doing with your Shadowbolts (esp. if you have 5/5 Imp. Shadowbolt and a SPriest in the raid) is much better.

As far as cheap necklaces go, I recommend the Necklace of the Deep

Really cheap mats, I think mine cost less than 10g. Then you can take all that gold saved and grab some nice gems to socket it with. Especially nice for a SV hunter, with all the juicy Agility and Crit possibilities.
