I’m the Map!

BRK » 16 August 2007 » In Gear, Guide, PvE »

Dear BRK, I have been reading your blog now for a long time and I want to thank you. You have showed me how to be a far better hunter than I was before. Thing is, I stopped doing instances on the race to 70. Where do I start now? The Tombs, the Crypts, Sethick? I need help here in some gear and I don’t really know where to start. Help me! Tirthayaad.”

Our buddy Kaliban has you covered, for his Loot Lists are legendary. We have him listed on our sidebar, too. Kaliban is the schiznit. All Hail!

Which instance you pick is going to depend on the group with which you run. If your guild will take you on loot-runs, you can jump on a Shadow Lab run and try for your Sonic Spear right away. However, if you and your friends are all not-quite-so-epically-geared, there is a natural progression of difficulty that is easily studied on WoWWiki and other Warcraft sites.

Pickup groups are not our cup of tea, but for some people they don’t mind them at all. If you can do that, we salute you.

What we think is the best way to go about these five-man instances is to get a group of seven to ten people who are dedicated to mastering these dungeons. Not everybody is going to be available every night which is why you want more than five. Defeating each dungeon is not as important as learning each other’s playstyles and improving your own skillset. A well-coordinated and effectively-communicating group in greenies will have better success and much more fun than a disfunctional band of purpled muffin-heads.

Talk about your encounters to each other. Ask questions and learn about the other classes and their capabilites. Watch how they react when things don’t go according to plan. Find out who makes the best strategies and who is best at thinking on-the-fly. Give these people roles in the groups based upon talent, not group function; the tank need not lead all the time. If your healer is the best group leader, let her lead! If your druid is the best boss-strategist, let him tell you what to do.

Now get out there and get phat loot!

I don’t mind PUG’s I have a macro made specifically for any time I find myself in a PUG.

    /cast Feign death
/me is not dead he is just avoiding a repair bill, because someone did something stupid.

Sometimes I get a laugh or two, other times I get booted from the party.

    Hmm to the email person.

I cant stand PUG’s. I did non stop pugs for about a week or 2 then never done em since. I grabbed reliable people during all those pug runs.. anyways..

If you want a good slabs group. Its healer tank mage 2x hunter (or 2 mages and 1 hunter).

I was getting my mage friend keyed. Ran with the above mage and 2x hunter. It was like running a lvl 19 instance at 70. Cake.

As for instances.. do your research before hand. I still haven’t done some of the 70 instances because I never did em lvling up and dont need em now.

I am not a fan of Kaliban’s Loot List as I disagree with some of his methods for weighting items, particular for my Class/Spec (Protection Paladin).

However, if he’s done a good job with Hunters, go for it. Aside from my issues with his formulas, the site is well done and very functional.

@Honors Code, sometimes the stats for the hybrid classes can be different depending on people. As a protection Pally, you might prefer a certain stat over another Protection Pally that prefers some other stats.

other than that, I think Kaliban does an awesome job on listing all those items in a fashionable site like that.

my problem with PUGs is finding one….

every tine i get on the LFG thing every one i go in there are 2 or 3 hunters looking for groups and only 2 or 3 lesser classes in there i try spamming the LFG channel never find anything there(just joined a guild yesterday hoping to have someone to run with he dident tell me there are only 3 lv 70s in it befor i joined and only about 8 people in the guild total)….

i have been looking for an arc group for a month so i can get the last key frag, no one does arc that i can find. the people i know i say something to them about it “sure i will run through arc with you later” still waiting for later to get here =P….

im to the point i have given up and play my lv 19 twink hunter(i know everyone hates twinks but man they are fun to play)and dont even play Adrus much any more…..

    end rant =P

Actually, some of the best runs I have been on were PUG’s. Granted I prefer to run with guildies, but there was a point where I had to find my own way through drop runs and managed to find some decent people to play with. You can easily identify a bad PUG from the first pull, so if it goes poorly, say, “Sorry guys, but this isnt gonna work out” and drop group.

Now as far as getting a good group for SLab…

I havent done SLab in well over a month and actually vowed to never return, cause it’s just too long and I cant get any upgrades, but a guildy needed help getting the fragment, so I said I would help. Check this out: A Prot Paladin (very well-geared/specced), a S Priest (very well geared/specced), a utility Hunter (a “gringe-worthy” BM/SV spec in mostly blues), and my 68 Lock guildy. We also picked up a 69 S Priest who seemed very hesitant to go after we informed him that we werent going to CC anything. My S Priest was main healing and my good friend with the Pally AoE tanked. Not one trap was laid, not one mind-control was cast and we one-shotted the place. We had some trouble on Murmur, but a LoH helped me heal through the blasts. After the run the S Priest kept saying that he couldnt beleive how that run went. He said he was going to write about on his guild forums, cause he had never heard of anyone doing that. Seeing as how we have AoE tanked plenty of instances before we didnt think this was a big deal, but this “PUG” this guy got into learned something new and got a good story out of it. Granted, it’s not exactly a PUG, but we were all strangers to him.

Anyway, that’s my silly PUG story for the day.

I prefer not to use any CC for SLabs, now that I’m geared past it. Sweeping Strikes + Whirlwind + Cleave = MS Warrior topping the PvE DPS charts. The healers I run with know to toss me a heal every now and again because this method can sometimes pull aggro, even off an excellent Pally tank, but the tank’s cool with it, and in general, we seldom have too many problems (unless Blackheart and Vorpil are feeling uncooperative that day).
