Is BRK The Antichrist? Perhaps
Well, since the Firefly Bet was so much fun, we’ve come up with a new one for TJ to try. Can you think of the most diabolically horrid reputation grind in the game? The most mind-numbingest, eye-poppingest, finger-achingest, mouth-clenchingest, hair-rippingest quest series ever devised?
That’s right, the Wintersaber Trainers.
Our beloved warlock has been challenged: grind her way to Exalted with the Wintersaber Trainers in two months. TJ had never heard of the Wintersaber Trainers, let alone met them, before tonight. She has the entire grind ahead of her.
And what is the reward for achieving Exalted with the Wintersaber Trainers? An epic ground mount that looks EXACTLY like Hobbes, the Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber.
Frankly, we’d do just about anything to attain this mount. We love mounts and this one, looking like Hobbes as it does, has been a dream of ours since we first read about them. But try as we might we just can’t do the quests. We go nuts. We went out there tonight to try again. But the solitude, the boredom, the endless and mindless grinding… it drives us insane.
TJ, on the other hand, is psyched. Go figure.
How bizarre is the grind? The first quest is called Frostsaber Provisions. You must get five Shardtooth Meat and five Chillwind Meat to turn in for 75 reputation. The drop rate for these items is approximately 15%. That’s 67 kills to acquire 10 quest items.
To get from 0-3000 reputation for Friendly, one must complete forty Frostsaber Provisions quests. 67 kills 40 times? 2680 kills to attain Friendly. TJ needs Exalted in two months.
Granted, there is another quest one can pick up at 1500/3000 into the grind called Winterfall Intrusion. This is a simple “kill 5 of these and 5 of these” quest and is repeatable, so the insanity of the Frostsaber Provisions quest does end a lot sooner than 2640 bear/chimera kills. But with the Firefly grind, every Needler was a potential End. Now ever bear and every chimera is just another after another in the long count to the barely in-sight goal… of Exalted.
22 October 2007, 2359 hours. If she is Exalted with the Wintersaber Trainers and can show us her Wintersaber mount she wins another BRK-dollar. If she fails for any reason, not only do we get a TJ-dollar but we get our original Firefly dollar back.
Why the inequality? Because she knows that for us to see her on a Wintersaber… to see that short mouthy warlock riding a Hobbes… it’s going to kill us. It’s going to rip into our soul, it’s going to hurt like nothing else we’ve ever experienced. Even worse, she’ll keep riding her fire horse except while we’re around. Then she’ll bring it out with some macro that says, “Here Hobbsie!” and prance around until we want to smack her.
So it’s a totally cool bet, right? Darn tootin’ it is; we’re psyched! The BRK-TJ Wintersaber Countdown has begun!

I know that grind, I’m on it myself
At least I have a friend who is going to pick it up as well as soon as she dings 60. Then we can be mind-numbingly bored together! Because that’s… better. Somehow.
Thank heavens for being human and getting the bonus rep. Is TJs warlock human? I think that when you tally it all up, it does cut off a decent chunk of the amount of quests needed to complete exalted. I decided not to get too involved in the numbers though, as I really don’t want to know…
Awww, damnit. So few people actually knew about that mount, and now it’s out there on the main page. :p
Hopefully the god-awful grind will keep people away. I want to be the only one I know with one. O_<
Well, should TJ win, fear not too too much! I learned about the Firefly here (from the other reader that went and got one) and your blog inspired yet another person to get one in about an hour and a half and only a hundred Needlers, max
Of course, now I feel a bit obligated to help our guild’s pet-addict get one since I tipper her off to it.
I’d claim that the solo Brood of Nozdormu grind is worse. Killing 42 000 elite bugs will take a long time.
Having tried to grind this quest (one of my hunters STILL has some shardtooth meat), I think your bet constitutes cruel and unusual punishment, BRK. At the very least, she should be allowed any and all help she can get in killing the beasts, at least through the Provisions portion. Have a heart, man!

But I don’t think BRK should get the dollar back. Trophies shouldn’t be exchanged. Let her keep that one.

Sorry BRK but I have to agree with mars506. Different bet, different dollar. Afterall you can’t really brag about winning your own money. Plus it means something to her, its a symbol of her efforts and something that will make her smile whenever she looks at it. Love the bet though!

The Winterspring Mount is much easier to get now than it used to be. The image below is from back in the day where I needed to get exalted with Darnassus also in order to ride it (and not by runecloth btw)

Well, when you mentioned the Firefly all those weeks ago, I started sqeaking in joy as a fan of the Firefly show - never knew that pet existed until then, and was probably happier for it. Inaraserra was named after one of the firefly characters, and I thought it would be cool to have the Firefly alongside her.
But now, now my poor hunter boyfriend has taken it upon himself to grind me up one, and has decimated the Needler population on his way.
TJ got hers quite early in comparison to this endless grind.. He’s killed thousands of the little buggers, and still no sign of a Captured Firefly.
I was wondering why I’d never heard of this quest or even seen anyone riding that lovely cat around Orgrimmar… and then saw that it’s alliance only. d’oh!

What are the terms? I mean, there was quite the todo there for a bit with various questions — what’s “help”, what’s interference, that sort of thing.
a tiger mount? sweet, worth it.

my hunter is busy grinding Gelkis Clan rep even though there are no rewards once I reach exalted.
at least i can one shot the groaning mules.
And I thought grinding rep w/ Sporeggar for that hideous shroom tabard was bad. Now I’m gonna’ have to do this!
BRK that bet is just pure evil! I was in Winterspring and saw someone on a frostsaber and knew I wanted one, so I jumped on my ram and ran off to frostsaber rock. After about 3 hours of mass killings I could not stand it anymore and only had a tiny fraction of rep. I switched to grinding Darnassus rep and now ride a swift stormsaber.

What I’m thinking and you must have detected this, is that you won’t be able to badger her while grinding, because as stated, with the fireflys, any bug could have been the one. But if you go and taunt her by “pretending” to kill her mobs, it won’t be as fun because she can just move on

BRK did not deface the dollar in such a way as to make it unfit for use as currency (more specifically by hiding serial numbers, value, mishaping/mutilating the bill, etc). As long as it can be removed from it’s case for use at a later point he is still in the gray area.
It’s a line in the sand that could be argued either way.
I see a flaw in this bet… a serious flaw.
Lets say she actually TRIES for this and does not make it. Ok, so you win a new dollar and your old dollar back. But I am willing to bet she will at the very least be close to getting the sabre anyway and will get it just to prance in front of you. So you may have the dollars, but she will still have the cat.

Actually, you’re right. That is a huge flaw. It’s a flaw, and it’s not fair. The bet is that I can get something BRK wants within a certain amount of time. If I can’t get it within that amount of time, I don’t think I should have it.
If I don’t make it by Oct 22nd at the designated hour, I’ll abandon the grind no matter how close I am. It ruins the spirit of the bet, the all in good fun part, if I lose and still rub his face in it.

@BRK, come on…a dollar…lol! Make it a dollar and a BRK coffee mug (personalized a 1 of 1 if you will!).
I have done some of the grind on my warrior, though I have long since gave up. I think I still have some meat in the bank for the quests though. My shiny new hunter however will do this grind. Will he complete it? Likely not, but meh…whatever.

I found the trainer while taking a look at the Pridewatchers. I couldn’t resist taming a pride watcher, and now I am grinding in Winterspring once again. Which is an area I liked actually.
Thanks for the addiction Pal, now I have to wait even longer for my Netherdrake Mount.

Well I am just irritated now - the horde needs to have a useless grind with a gifty like this. I would so be over there all the time. I wonder if Blizz could add something in the next patch?….

Well, there’s always the nagrand grind for the black talbuks. To get a Black War Talbuk like i have, you have to turn in 400 Oshu’gun Crystal Powder, which admittedly isn’t hard at all, and sounds like nothing compared to this wintersaber stuff. My druid sure looks spiffy on it, though.
I don’t get why you only need 75 riding skill? You have to be level 60 so why not make it riding skill 150 like every other epic riding mount.
Can the meat be bought or sold?

OK, If TJ gets a wintersabre mount, I am officially switching alliances from BRK. I looked at that grind, because I really really want one, but just cannot do 745 repetitions of the same quest. Ever.

I could’ve sworn I’d read that they were buffing/had buffed the furlbog and wintersaber rep quests to make them easier at some point, but I can’t find it for the life of me. It is entirely possible I hallucinated this.
@Doogie: All I know is that they did get rid of the requirment of being exalted with Darnassus so you could get the epic Kitty riding skill. Now you just need plain ol’ epic riding skill.
But I got exalted with Darna anyway, just to spite.
@Doggie They are buffing the Furlblog rep with 2.2 (along with AD and other classics, iirc). I don’t know if Wintersaber is included in that as it was always a special hard grind.
Funny bet, but man, you shouldn’t get to win your dollar back. That just wouldn’t be right, Damh, and you know it. You lost that puppy fair and square, and no amount of cajoling should be possible for you to get it back.
1) Let her keep her hard won dollar: don’t be a looser trying to STEAL her rightfully earned dollar away! That’s not the BRK I know! (Maybe I’m wrong and know too little!)
2) Now THAT’s a VERY cool mount, especially now that I’m leveling my hunter (51 now!) and soon will be grinding Timbermaw rep! Since I can do both at 58, AND save the epic mount training for later, AND get XP from the grind whereas in the past one would stop getting XP at 60, this may just be the thing for me in a few levels! Save some training gold for now, get XP, get REP w/ two factions: WIN, WIN, WIN!
3) TJ: Go for it girl! BRK needs to be taught (AGAIN!) not to mess with you!
4) Also, TJ, he doesn’t seem to have set any special “no-help” rules, did he? At least, none were given in this blog! So if you party w/ someone, preferably FFA so you can loot all the meats, you both get XP from the grind (after that initial 1500 XP), so it can be a piece of cake!
5) “Every needler was a possible end”: that actually works the other way around for me! I’d rather be told to grind 3000, than be told to get 1 drop and grind 3000 to get it: less frustration because you can actually keep tracking your progress towards the goal!
5) 2680 kills is that it? That’s less than 50 kills per DAY! A couple hours a day will do that just fine without a sweat: you’re SO scr**ed, BRK!

Has anyone heard anything about a Horde specific version of the Wintersaber Trainers? There was a theory at one time that a raptor version was going to be available in Un’goro Crater, but I haven’t seen anything since then.
