And That I Shall Not Forgive

BRK » 31 August 2007 » In Gear »

If you’ve seen the movie, you know TJ has forbade you all from putting BRK-accolades in your emails to the BRK Walmart-of-Hunterness Clearinghouse. Well, Grumble /scoffs in TJ’s direction with his email and lays it on thick:

“Dear BRK, Good day sir! First of all - I apologize for this - butyoursiteisthemost… (gasp gasp) … amazingresouceforBMsthereis. (wheeze) Hadda say it. Not that you haven’t heard it before, but Gaia Bless You.

“Now onto business. I have 2 guns: Don Santos Famous Hunting Rifle and Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle. Given your amazing BM guru powers, and since I LOVE to hear the ‘well, either would be good depending on your playstyle’ answer so much, would you honor me with your opinion on the subject.

“Which gun, Obi-Wan BRK, should I use? Grumble the Fisherman, (if you ever need a fish, look me up.)”

While TJ starts her Lil Fury Generator - and if we’re lucky we’ll get a movie - let’s talk about the Famous Don Santos, shall we.The Don Santos is all about proc-rate. If it procs frequently for you, it’ll do more damage. If it doesn’t proc, the WSR is your buddy. Some people see Improved Aspect of the Hawk proc all the time. BRK only sees it go off on killing shots. Your luck my vary with all of this.

Did you know that there is a hullabaloo on the Forums about the Don Santos? There is, really. There are many people who believe that it is The Perfect Weapon because the attack-power procs occur frequently and the attack speed is just perfect for Steady Shot-weaving. “Goodie for Auto/Steady/KC macro-freaks everywhere!” they delight in advertising, “It’s better than everything!”

BRK says, if you have one of these guns, don’t sweat trying to get the other. The difference isn’t worth the hassle. If you get the WSR, why waste 2000 gold on a “similar” gun when that money can be used for so many other upgrades? If you have the DSFHR, why waste DKP on a “similar” gun when your Tier 4 gloves are dropping from the next boss? They are both lovely weapons and you should be happy with either.

But what if you’re in our friend Grumble’s position where you have both. Which do you use?

Frankly, BRK would use the one that looks the coolest, but that’s just how we roll.

But if you’re a numbers-freak and insist on squeezing every single DPS out of your gun and just must know which is The Best, you could make an appointment with Dr. Boom.

Hie thee to Area 52 and find the ranged-attack dummy himself. Clear the area, load 200 bullets into your ammo pouch, clear your DamageMeter and let loose. When you finish those 200 shots, write down your damage total, swap guns, load another 200 bullets, reset your DamageMeters and go at it again.

Compare the totals and there ya go. Why listen to BRK or anybody else when you can go do this testing yourself? Go! Scoot!

    /cheers this post

I have sunfury AND don santos now.

This was second on my list of blogs i most wanted to see :) Post one on arenas now and I’ll sleep easier tonight.

So, when doing this comparison, should one use only auto attack? Would you do this comparison more than once? Or should proc rate be the same each time? Only problem is… my Don Santos has the 12 dps scope on it, and my sunfury has the 28crit scope… I don’t think it’s a fair comparison… plus, with my troll racial thrown in, the Sunfury bow should always come out on top for me, right?

  2. ArmsandFury on August 31st, 2007 2:55 pm

Why are there no scopes on those guns… didn’t you tell me to put scopes on?!

  3. For the Pie on August 31st, 2007 3:20 pm

He tells that to the warrior to make them spend gold. It’s an evil plot to bankrupt the tanks.

  4. BRK on August 31st, 2007 3:23 pm

There are no scopes because they are generic screenshots from WoWHead.com provided by the lovely and malnurished TJ.

Interesting thought… how many shots can one realistically expect to fire in the 10sec proc duration? And how many procs per minute should we expect on average? Can we get an average AP bonus… meaning discover that based on proc rate/time, the DS adds up to bonus 50ap (or something) for the gun steadily?

Of course, if you aren’t a raider, you are buying a Santos even before your epic flying mount, because there is no other choice, is there?…

  7. Tom on August 31st, 2007 4:02 pm

It’ll be a 1.96 speed, so no steady shots without clipping for you. It all depends on cooldowns. So probably about 8 shots in 10 seconds in an optimal situation.

  8. Chris on August 31st, 2007 4:17 pm

I grabbed Don Santos off the AH for 2k without blinking and haven’t looked back.

I intend to raid at some point, but that bad boy makes non heroic instance runs a breeze (Yay for Sonic Spear on my first Shadow Labs run) so it was still worth the gold.

And with my epic griffon, netherdrake and nether ray already in the bank… Seriously, what else am I going to spend money on?

Now if I can just find shoulders that don’t suck. *sob*

@BRK - nourished enough to whup you from here well into next week !

@chris - I heard that Black Morass has some great cloth shoulders you could try…

procs suck for me… I’ve had good luck with IAotH, but hourglass of the unraveller and every other proc-item I have used always occurs right before the killing blow. it’s damned irritating! at least it gives 32 crit rating…

In 10 sec a MM will get either 4 or 5 Auto Shots, 4 Steadies, 2 Arcanes and a Multi; 250 RAP means +75 damage from the 2 Arcanes, +300 damage from the Steadies, +168 or +210 damage from the Auto shots and +47 damage from each Multishot target (only one, hopefully :-) and with 3 points in Barrage). So that’s between 590 and 630 damage bonus from a single proc as compared to the base damage of the the Don Santos…

A BM will almost certainly get 5 auto shots, and 2-3-4 Steadies and an maybe an Arcane, if he’s not busy slamming Kill Command :-) That’s 400-450 bonus damage, not counting the increased pet damage.

All calculations are made without taking in account additional Haste (troll racial, rapid fire, haste rating), crits and +% damage increased talents, so the actual damage bonuses are quite higher…

… and my head hurts now.

don santos does not clip your auto shots with a 1.96 firing speed.

Any thoughts on the Gyro-balanced Khorium Destroyer? I have the Ogri-la Crystalline Xbow and I’m very pleased with it. I an engineer and have the mats to make this baby. I’m tinkering with using it for myself with adamantite shells for the dmg boost of the shells vs warden arrow…just trying to get some feedback. Great Blog btw.

I have Don Santo, and man, they need to bump the proc rate on it period. I tested at about 4.7 to 5.2%proc rate on boom. the only time DS does well for me (please note I said ‘for me’ MMV), is if I held off on using my abacus & rapidfire. I manualy weave my shots so as to not run into ‘clipping’ I hear the macro mashers on the forums complain about. I’ve since banked it in favour of the x-bow from Attumen in Kara. Consistant damage v. occasional nuke, I prefer the reliable.

and that damnable hourglass trinket only procs on killing blows! I swear it! (they need to change it to a use: trinket)

totally agree with BRK on testing it out for urself and then make a decision. so many variables in different setups.

personally, i had both and the proc rate was so bad for me i got pissed and vendored the DS. the WS keeps me in the lead even tho the SF is on both our SV hunters and one BM, and the MM hunter uses the arena xbow. at times they may sneek by me but the majority of the time, me and my ravager rule the roost.

  16. Karl on August 31st, 2007 7:16 pm

I’d like to hear about the Gyro-balanced Khorium Destroyer as well… I won’t be a raid but I am an engineer…

(looking forward to building my own flying machine in the next expansion!)

  17. Dave on August 31st, 2007 7:25 pm

The Gyro-balanced Khorium Destroyer is perfect for a tank. Not so good for a hunter. It has no agi, no AP, no int, no crit. Just dps and stamina. You could throw in a hunter gem, but it’d still be pretty gimp compared to any number of ranged weapons out there.

Although their listed dps is lower, you’d be better off with Valanos’ Longbow or Lohn’goron, Bow of the Torn-heart.

  18. Karl on August 31st, 2007 7:59 pm

or it seems that for a non-raider, the Veteran’s Musket or the Crystalline Crossbow would be top dog, with one of the 66 dps weapons filling in until you get one of those.

    (Untill you can get a Barrel-blade longrifle… :-)

  19. adelorac on August 31st, 2007 8:12 pm

Thanks for the info gents, however I can’t help to think that GBKD would be real nice to have for BG’s or arena work. Just like with any lvl 70 weapon, there’s pro’s and cons. Although, just browsing on other sites, there are quite a few hunters out there who use the GBKD for everything and are quite happy with it. BRK, any thoughts?

And yup, the thought of owning the Barrel-blade long rifle should make any hunter tingly =O

I had the same dissapointment with the Don Santos = spent most of my gold on one, took it to the PTR and fired 1200 shots at DR Boom - the proc rate was 4% - damage not much more than my Consortium Blaster over the same number of shots - Stick to the Wolfslayer unless your proc rate is much higher.
