Hobbes, Ammo, Heroics and Mushiness
Well we finally remembered to grab a shot of Hobbes’s character panel. /cheer
As you can see, he has not broken the 170DPS tooltip barrier yet but he’s getting close.
We ran heroic Shattered Halls last night and remembered to stop off at Honor Hold and stock up on those Super Shells their quartermaster hoards. With those in our ammo bag, our character panel looks thus:
This ammo is like buying 93-octane gas; it’s really expensive and can feel like you’re getting ripped off. But if you look at our previous character panel screenshot, you’ll see we had an increase of 7DPS just by getting the Super Shells ammo. Massive quantities of sustained, ranged DPS, right? Right.
BRK’s problem is that he never remembers to go to Honor Hold before a raid. That’s gotta change.
So heroic Shattered Halls, right. Did we wipe on the first 6-pack pull? Yes; miscommunication about how the trapping was going to work. Once that was straightened out, though, we breezed through the place, except when the mage died.
Important Mage- Strategy Rant: Always run toward the tank if you get aggro. If you’re fighting the two-headed boss in heroic Shattered Halls and you get aggro, don’t run down the hallway towards the instance exit. It makes it much more difficult for your tank to Taunt and your hunter to Misdirect. Running away from your tank is Bad and you will Die a Very Squishy Death. /stopranting
If your tank is geared and your healer is paying attention and your DPS focus-fires on the tank’s primary target, this heroic is not so bad. Mistakes with aggro will cost you dearly, of course. Also, the instance pretty much picks certain times that you’re going to wipe and there’s nothing you can do about it, like fighting a 5-mob pack and the instance deciding to spawn not just one but two assassins. No sense in getting too mad about that; what ya gonna do.
But Blizz, there should be a bigger reward than a Badge of Justice for taking down a heroic boss. Dropping the gear that you needed just to GET to the boss is stupid. Your party should be fully decked-out in level-115 blues before even trying a heroic. Dropping more of that stuff in a heroic is really dumb. BRK would not be adverse to these bosses dropping two badges for each party member, some extra gold and just forget the blue drops altogether.
But we digress.
Can a BM hunter with zero bonuses to trapping chain-trap in heroic Shattered Halls? Sure. Coordination between hunter and tank is required. The party should know that the maximum number of trappings that a non-trapping-skill-enhanced hunter can do in a heroic without assistance is probably three, but that should be plenty.
What was the hardest part of heroic Shattered Halls? Line-of-sight healing. If the tank and healer aren’t communicating, it takes just a few seconds for the tank to eat it and cause a wipe. Our party died more on 3-mob pulls than the 5 and 6-mob pulls specifically because of line-of-sight healing incidents.
Finally, our old friend from Arms and Fury, his lovely and talented wife - their little boy is adorable! - and one of the best holy paladins we’ve ever had the pleasure of running with have all rejoined the BRK Family on Drenden.
People stink. Coworkers are, for the most part, tolerable. Friends and Family are what Life is all about. You want to know why World of Warcraft is so incredible? It’s not the graphics or the gear or the quests. WoW is special because of the Friends you make.
Welcome Home, Kelmar, Hipnatizd and Ironbelly.
/sniff

“Important Mage- Strategy Rant: Always run toward the tank if you get aggro.”
My husband plays a Mage who was specced Arcane until very recently. Frequently, he would cast Slow on the mob that started chasing him and kite it around the room (even in Heroics) until the tank could be bothered to notice something was wrong. ^_^ And what about Frost Nova and then backing up? If a Mage Frost Novas a mob and then tries to run toward the tank, especially in a narrow corridor, he risks getting one-shotted by the rooted mob. Maybe it’s not always the best idea to run toward your tank?
And what about Healers (me)? I had always heard that if a mob turns to me, I should run toward the Hunter, looking plaintively at him in hopes of an Ice Trap (which is why I am trying to learn to stand behind the Hunter in 5-mans). Is this good practice?

btw 167.8+338.1=505.9
That magic 500 DPS line is crossed! PARTY TIME!

Maybe your husband should ask
Zemulos on 31 Aug 2007 at 2:13 pm #
If you have a reliable hunter, standing behind him is good practice yes. It took me a few instances, but I taught our healers to run to me when in trouble, looking for the trap to save them, or scattershot to buy some time and pet growl.
Gratz on doing shat halls on heroic. We did it the other day the whole way through. Previously we had only done the first boss. Interestingly, I was the tank, we had a feral druid, holy priest, and two rogues. Yes, we killed the first boss with all melee damage lol. Sword spin? What sword spin? Also, the timed quest… we died, and the timer went away. We dropped quest and picked it up again, still no timer. But at the end, we saved the guy anyway. Did the timer still run hidden in the background? Or did the timer just go away? I don’t know, but we completed the quest
But what’s this about taunting the ogre boss? He can’t be taunted. There are no aggro grabbing abilities that work on him. He’s immune to all that on normal mode too. And I’m curious how you had LOS issues in shat halls? Anyway, you mentioned the assassins showing up. They’re annoying, but a funny thing happened before they finally patched it up with last patch. Used to be that occasionall pulling that pack of mobs in the center walkway where the gladiators are on both sides… pulling those mobs look fine, until the last few were about to die, then all the gladiators would aggo for no reason. Had a couple wipes on normal mode from 14 elites at a time pounding on us lol.
And you should totally submit to bliz that the loot in heroics is garbage. I would even go so far as to say that a load of extra gold WOULD be a viable alternative, lets face it, for places like shat halls, you can expect to die a few times, even if it’s not a total wipe. And on that subject, there should be an epic for each slot of any toons equipment panel that drops from some heroic. IE.. for warriors, the only chestpiece (epic) is in kara, none in heroic, same with hunter, etc. Seth Halls heroic has a beautiful staff for casters… tanks can get suneater, where is the epic hunter weapon?

Your last comment is what keeps me playing WoW. The guild I am in has RL friends as well as people I would consider extended friends.
I have never done Heroic SH, but I have been told it is like 2nd on the list of Heroics to never go on. The first being SL.

Thanks for the kind words BRK. It is really really great to be back among friends.

Mages can’t frost nova bosses anyway, so thats no excuse, even if its not a boss and they pull aggro, frostnova is still never a wise choice as a reaction. If a clothie is stood near the mob that gets novad and doesnt react fast enough they can easily be killed in 1-2 shots in a heroic (depending on their gear ofc).
As for being killed by running to the tank past a frostnovad mob… ever heard of Blink ?

The ammo tip is a good one. An extra 7 dps is well worth having.
I have to say that I am surprised at BRK for not keeping a supply of Felbane Slugs tucked to one side. For a long time now I have followed the BRK advice of keeping ammo in my bank. I always keep two large bags filled up, ready for action.
Unfortunately, I still need a bit more rep to get the 37dps ammo, but I regularly nip to Nagrand and fill my pockets with the 34dps Halaani Grimshot.

One little trick I use is to mail extra ammo to an alt, and then return the mail. As long as the town has a mailbox, you’ll have access to extra ammo if needed.

ok, I’m at a loss… how the hell is hobbes at 167? you are at 330+ maybe I’m missing something. my paperdoll says 302.x and Bentley’s says 170.9.
you have 200+ more AP and 83 more agility. our builds are very similar, I used 1 point in revive pet, and the 5th point in frenzy, with none in animal handler(yea, I know, I need to respec that)
so, I can’t understand what the difference in pet paperdoll could be… we both have winterspring cats… I have claw9,bite9,growl and dash3 trained, cobra reflexes, avoidance, stamina 9, armor 7..
even your strength is higher than mine, which I think should boost the cat’s damage… WTF?!

Assassins can be found with Flare and Detect Invisibility. They tend to have a bit of a patrol range. Once you remember where they tend to show up, you can use Flares to flush them out of hiding more accurately. Of course… most people don’t want to wait for that.

Am I the only one that cares that BRK hasn’t gotten Hobbes past the 170 dps mark yet?
/cry on Hobbes shoulder
BRK is not BRK without good ole Hobbes.

As a tank, it’s really annoying when a aggro-pulling happy Mage (who delights in doing so, just to both annoy and test me out) to run away from me. Good thing I have my Intervene skillz.
Especcially with the ogre boss in Halls, since he’s untauntable

No splurging on Adamantite bullets for raiding? No engineer friends who can make them for you?
Adamantite bullets are love with the added 46dps. =)

Grrr…
Mabd was running melvin’s shammy through SM Chapel…
I was using an owl.
I explained… “the owl does aoe… you have problems… run to the owl…”
What happens? Melvin’s shammy walks in front of one of those doors in back, aggros all the mobs inside while I’m clearing crap… then runs OUT of the chapel, 4 elites in pursuit…
I had to send owl at one of em, and (this being before the mend pet fix) got to watch Fluffy die before I could get in range to save him…
The worthless shammy lived tho.
I went all /rant on him after his excuse…
“If I didn’t run, they would have killed me!”

@3 - Because he doesn’t read blogs, thus making it difficult to ask.
@hell - The original statement was a general one and not limited to boss encounters. Of course you can’t Frost Nova a boss. >.< And I disagree that FN is a bad reaction. Presumably, I won't be standing near another clothie. If I pull aggro, and he Frost Novas it, I know to back up. If I don't, well I was a goner anyway.
/frown
Dave on 31 Aug 2007 at 7:19 pm #
Unless you already have a system worked out with the tank, *always* bring the mob back to the tank. Frost Nova is a great defensive maneuver, but it doesn’t last long. In a few seconds, the mob will be back on the move. Head to the tank so it can be controlled.
Running/kiting presents two major problems. First, the group has lost your dps. This results in the combat taking longer, more healing required, etc… Second, if the tank takes after the mob, it takes that much longer to acquire the target and gain aggro. During which, the tank has to forget about the other mobs. So overall, running/kiting reduces team dps, reduces tanking effectiveness, and strains the healer.
On the subject of heroics, most of them have been nerfed quite a bit. Some, like Steamvaults, are only marginally different than the regular version. While Shattered Halls and Shadow Labs are still tougher than the rest, most of the horror stories are from pre-nerf runs. I still don’t like to think of the mob + 2 dogs right before the first boss in SH. That pull used to be insanely brutal.

Please please tell me how and in what you have hobbes trained.
RabidPoultry on 04 Sep 2007 at 5:45 pm #
BRK has Hobbes trained depending on fight, he has posted that a few times, it costs next to nothing to do so. Not being an ass I swear!!!!
But its safe to say Bite isn’t in the rotation
