A Successful Tweaking

“Dear BRK, a friend turned me on to your website and it seems that you’re a well-accepted expert on WOW hunters, so I hope you can help me out. I had been doing fine in my effective damage output in raids (usually first or second) until about 2 months ago when my guild started doing higher end raids. I have been watching the logs pretty closely and am consistently getting put to shame by virtually every other dps class. What’s worse is I’ve seen a few other hunters who are geared and spec’d similar to me blow me out of the water too!

“So what am I doing wrong?

“After getting some advise from another hunter I have changed up my approach in long fights. I’ve tried just spamming steady shot and kill command, while using rapid fire and bestial wraith as offend as possible. Although it helped, I am still not putting out the same dps I’m seeing out of other hunters. So again I have to ask, what am I doing wrong? what is the secret that no one is telling me? is it my shot rotation? something about my build or gear? is there a special macro that no one is telling me about?

Talents

1. Get Go For The Throat so your pet has more Focus to do Claw. Claw
is a massive Focus dump; feed it.

2. Get Improved Hunter’s Mark. More Attack Power for your Pet is more
damage for you.

3. Get 2/2 Bestial Discipline. See #1.

4. Get 3/3 Ferocious Inspiration. You are losing 3% bonus damage for
both you and your pet.

5. Dump Spirit Bond. Mend Pet HoT makes SB worthless.

6. Dump Improved Aspect of the Hawk and Catlike Reflexes.

Gear

1. Your dual-wield daggers are nice, but the +15 agi enchants
crimp you. When the +20 agi enchants come out, go back do
duel-wielding if you want. Otherwise, get a Hellforged Hallberd, Sonic
Spear, or Legacy and slap the +35 agi enchant on it.

2. Your +Hit rating is low. As a NE hunter you need +8.6% to eliminate
misses against bosses. You’re missing too much.

3. Replace those attack power gems with agility gems. You’ll lose some
raw RAP but make up for it with increased crit.

4. Your Meta gem is terrible. Get the +12 agility and +3% crit damage
bonus meta gem. We’ve tried the gem you have and it hardly ever procs.

And make sure you have DamageMeters or some a similar addon installed
so your pet-damage is tracked. Unless you have it installed yourself,
your pet’s damage is not included in your totals.

“Dear BRK, Great news! I tried everything you suggested and it made a HUGE difference.

“Notice in particular that i went from #10 to #1 in dps; ignoring the mage that popped his wad and got punished for it 30sec. into the fight. Also I jumped from #8 to #4 in damage done and we downed Gruul!

“You can see from the stats on me (click on my name) that I still need to get my HR up – I missed about 11 shots. Respecing my pet away from the old training mix of max health and armor made a really big contribution. I noticed the difference in Dharma’s output compared to some of the other hunter cats and credit Cobra Reflexes.

“Spamming steady shot seemed to really do the trick, but I need to work on positioning so I can spend more time shooting. All in all, a great improvement and I really wanted to say thank you. Jeor”

    DamageMeters is horribly buggy and even worse when it comes to hunters. A much better counter is “Recount”. It gives you every little bit of data your heart could possibly desire, pet damage share, graphs, pretty pictures.

    I like SWStats, it gives lots of data to munch on.

    Wouldn’t it be real easy to confirm this statement? Go to his realm, make a new toon, whisper the guy, ask him if he really wrote us that letter.

    How long do you think we’d be able to get away with making up letters before we were “discovered” and laughed out of existance? A day?

    Disagree with our conclusions, fine. But why question our integrity?

    We really like SSW, got it running on our Mac, and will see what pretty stuff we can make with it.

    Argghh…where was this post at midnight last night, when a guildie was gemming her new Crystalhide Handwraps? I may have told her to go for AP over Agility…cause I couldn’t remember. *cry*

    (Fortunately, we have gems coming out our ears, and if I have to, I’ll replace hers myself.)
