Being Irresponsible

“Dear BRK … At what point is fun more important than max potential dps? And followed by the ancillary question, if you’re not speccing for max dps are you fundamentally being irresponsible as a raider? Snowlamp.”

Fun exceeds max potential DPS when your fun intrudes on the fun of others. If you want to run around Nagrand and melee with Aspect of the Pack on, that’s your business. If you want to run with other people, you have a responsibility to Do Your Job.

As a hunter you can have many duties but DPS is your raison d’etre. If you want to be a superior CC specialist and dump 17 or more points into the Survival tree, that’s fine. If you want to be a Silencing Shot machine and pull casters, go for it. If you find the 18-seconds of unstoppable BM-power to be your love, we’re there with you.

You cannot tank. You cannot heal. You cannot combat rez. You cannot make water or soulstones or totems. You’re there to DPS. If you’re not having fun DPSing, you should roll another toon.

But we think you’re questioning whether or not you should respec BM from your current MM/SV creation. Snowlamp, if you’re happy as a MM or SV, good for you and pass the ammo.

I think the deeper question is “How much difference does spec make?” and at what level of difference should you switch specs.

If going BM adds 5% damage, are you wrong for wanting to stay SV?

What if BM added 50% damage?

How about HKM fight? Do you really have to be a Shammy tank just because you’re one of the 2 best geared Hunters in the raid at the time, or is it OK to ask for someone else to do that so you can plug away on the other guys?

I think fun is the only reason to be playing a game. If your idea of fun doesn’t mesh with others ideas (such that they want you to change to something unfun, for instance (NPI)) then you should play with someone else (or no one else).

Making your funtime into a job is just sad.

I had a similar question, and was tempted to ask. In my case, I’ve got a fairly non-standard spec, 48/10/3, which I enjoy having, but I know it is dropping my DPS. I’m not a hardcore raider, I solo and don’t expect to get taken on progression raids, but I would like to get to farm-status raids once in a while. Does this make me irresponsible?
