Hobbes Definitely Has The Look

BRK » 25 September 2007 » In Pets »

“Dear BRK, what is the BRK take on raptors as they have the same dps as cats and ravagers, now have the dash ability, their armor is a little higher than the cats but not as high as the ravager, and hp is a little lower than the cats but not as low as the ravager. Arlein and Whitey.”

Hunters choose a pet for one of three reasons:

1) They want specific stats or effects, we call these Stat Pets

2) They want a specific rare or special animal, we call these Status Pets

3) They want something other people don’t choose, we call these The-Look Pets

Stat Pets are Cats, Ravagers, Bears, Boars, Owls, Carrion Birds, or any other pet that has a specific high stat (DPS, health, etc.) or spell (Dash, Gore, Screech, etc.)

Status Pets are the rare/special animals like Siam Rotam, Zul’Gurub Serpents, or any other rare, hard to get, or one-of-a-kind pet.

The-Look Pets are chosen because the hunter wants something you don’t see every day. Crocs, Gorillas, and Tallstriders fall here. How often do you see a level 70 pink flamingo? Not recently, we’ll bet. Any real reason to train one? Nope. Will BRK put a screenshot of one up here if he runs across one? We sure will; they’re cool!

Raptors used to be identifed as a The-Look Pet. There was no critical purpose to having one because if you want its stats you would’ve be much better off with a cat or a ravager.

But now Raptors have Dash and statwise are on par with both of those other two pets. But because of the Stable Situation not every hunter who wants to try a Raptor on for size is going to be able to. Shattrath probably isn’t going to be overrun with Raptor-pets tonight.

As such, we believe that the Raptor is going to be one of those rare pets that crosses pet-categories. They shall be both Stat Pets and The Look Pets, at least for a while.

Just like Hobbes.

Raptors have their uses but tbh a cat owns all against casters and a bear can tank melee like nothing else.

Hmmm… with the change, IMHO, every hunter needs…

    1) A cat/ravager/raptor for doing that dps thing. The stats are close enough that personal preference for model/skin are the most important.

    2) A boar. High defenses + gore + charge. Nuff said.

    3) Utility slot. Need raid dps? scorpid. (assuming the nerf hasn’t made it useless). Need CC?.. something with dive and screech. Need fun?.. pick whatever floats your boat.

    4) Another stable slot. And trainable hellboars. And more unique skins. And more hunter quests. And pets that you only get from quests. And…

Trainable hellboars sounds good. They look like pigs. They act like pigs. But they’re demons? Enslaving one with my warlock is on my to-do list. I wonder if I’d get charge or gore and feel like a hunter for 5 minutes…

I’m actually going to try a raptor tonight, as I accidentally tamed a caster warp stalker. XD I had a raptor briefly and I liked it alright, but now with dash, it might be worthy of a stable slot.

Oh yeah! I wanted to tell you since you use it: baudbag was broken for me after the patch.

As an avid fan of gorillas, I would like to see a fourth skill added to these wonderful crowd-tanking pets. Whether it be charge, punch (claw), or something else alltogether like the wonderful knockback that they have in the wild, I will always use a gorilla as one of my stabled pets. I currently have a carrion bird (the lovely white and black, two-headed outlands variety) and may add a third pet to my stable in the form of the ghost cat or quite possibly a white or black maned lion… then there’s always the red, long eared, glowy-eyed Blood Elf cats… Why can’t they just give us another stable slot or two, or three… I would pay 50-100 gold for another slot, easy.

A raptor might be in my stable soon simply because the outlands raptors are dead sexy (I want a gorilla skin similar to the outlands raptors… PLEASE!!!) and dash would be a great addition to the raptor abilities, but I always seem to miss that crowd control aspect of thunderstomp and screech.

When I was young and dumb and full of ale, my guildmaster took me, the young 14 level dwarven hunter, over to Wailing Caverns to tame a raptor outside the instance. I kept Raptors all the way through until I got to Outlands.

Then I found BRK and other sites telling me how sad Raptors were.

As a young orc, mean and green and full of pork, I have a ghost saber. It’s a look and stat pet, well it’s a hard to see pet for sure. You can find my latest screenies on my blog.
