A Gentle Rebuttal
OK, so we have no proof; we retract our opening remark. However our spluttering-disbelief remains unabated.
Our good buddy Mendax whipped up a preposterous mathematical model whose mere existence demands its destruction. We’re outraged; we’re in a total tizzy. How could any sane and decent member of society stand on his blog soapbox and attempt to foist this… this unholy and unprincipled fabrication upon a doe-eyed public:
Ravagers > Cats
CRACK, WE SAY!
Hold on, we need to go kick something.
…
BRK has proselytized that Gore > Claw for long fights, but never that Ravagers > Cats. Hobbes is beautiful, he growls, he shakes his jowls, he gets Cay-hugs from the Squeekie-Priestie.
A ravager is a cockroach. A great big, swaying, emotionless, expressionless, would just as soon spit on your grave as fight for you, orange and purple cockroach.
What girl hugs a cockroach? You don’t get chicks with insects! Cenarian Expedition isn’t in Silithus for the bars and nightlife, you know!
/harumph
Every other pet in the WoW-world is, in some form another, attractive. Even EPL boars have been called, “So ugly they’re cute.”
Ravagers are just ugly.
Ravagers are so ugly, having one makes you hated with both Aldor and Scryer.
Ravagers are so ugly, they make Princess Theradras queezy.
Ravagers are so ugly, when we fight a ravager in PvP, we have to tell Hobbes to kill it and not to just bury it in the litterbox.
Having said all that… we can’t wait to grab one from the Netherwing cave tomorrow.
Just don’t tell Hobbes!

Yup! They’re nasty, ugly insects, but the moment I send a Big Red Klaatu at a mage in the arena… the ice block is up almost instantly. Poor fire mages… they die so easily to my Evil Dead II inspired insect.
I still have a cat with a different set of resistances and a warp hunter to use for tanking, but my cat (Verata) was replaced with Klaatu about 2 months ago… for general purposes anyway. I still bust out the cat at times.
Oh wait… crap. Cat is gone. Forgot about the scorpid! He’s still in rotation for Prince-like fights.
Come to think of it, I’m not really running anything these days that would really require my warp hunter anymore. Think I might go tame a kitty again!
But yeah, the insects are ugly and mean. Kitties are the Bon Jovis of the pet world and Ravagers are the mean, evil, painful Slayers of the pet world…
No, ravagers are the AC/DC of the pet world. Kitties, on the other hand, are the ‘N Sync of the pet world.
Sorry, but Slayer would remoreselessly tear out and eat the livers of the members of AC/DC (barehanded mind you!) to get drunk whereas AC/DC would simply hit the bottle. Slayer is therefore inherently meaner and scarier than AC/DC.
I love raptors, if it wasn’t for my faithful Thingy Junior who has been by my side since I hit level 10, I would have grabbed one as soon as I hit 62. Alas, levelling two pets and yourself at the same time doesn’t work in practice, so ThiJu won out.
My ravager ‘knibbles’ finds this post offensive, and has purposed herself to finding you and laying eggs in your hair.
BRK you confuse me… Are you saying ravagers are great pets or crap pets or are they just ugly… I don’t understand.
Are raptors making their way up in the mix or are they just as mediocre as before even with dash?
I still love my ‘Rilla, and have been playing with a Buzzard for the past few days, but am seriously thinking about going back to a Ravager or even the Ghost cat…
Final question, on a buzzard, does bite provide more dps or does claw give a bigger bite?
Eh… doesn’t really matter what BRK is saying. He’s attached to Hobbes. Lots of hunters get attached to their pets. I know I had Ash (Again with the Evil Dead references!) from 50-70, but retired him with the coming of Nikto, my scorpid!
Many of my old friends in the game were mad at me for getting rid of The Cat That Tanked The Baron and would pick up Drakk at times! But Ash led a long and fruitful life as a hunter pet and I like to think I retired him with honor to go hunt down felboars and raptors for fun or food at his leisure.
Not sure how long BRK has had Hobbes, but he definitely has an affinity for his big red kitty and I can’t say that I blame him.
So wait, I need a ravager, cat, boar and a raptor, as well as a bird?… #$P#)$ I need more slots!!!!
Funiest part of your post BRK was the Princess Theradras comment.
Okay BRK,
Yeah, Hobbes is cute. He’s perfect for when your son needs a warm body to cuddle against when you instance, or perfect for sitting on Mrs. BRK’s lap as she surfs the web for expensive bling. Yeah, you’ve told us he’s ferocious and all when he’s big and red. How often is that? 15 seconds every couple of minutes? Pfft.
My ravager, Ming, is ferocious. He’s neither cute nor cuddly. He’s vicious, snarling, nasty and altogether unpleasant. On top of that, he’s like that all the time, not just in 15-second bursts of redness.
If someone broke into my house, I wouldn’t expect my fluffy kitty to defend the homestead, know what I mean? My ravager, on the other hand, would be expected to tear the intruder’s limbs off. Then eat them. Then pass them. Then show the intruder the defecated limbs. That’s what ravagers are, and they are PERFECT for chewing on everything that I painstakingly blast away at in Outland.
So, yeah, ravager > kitty. It’s as obvious as clown > mime, or Bears > Packers. You know it deep down, my man. You really do. Admit it.
Love your column, and it’s one of the very first sites in my daily “site rotation” (I don’t have a macro for that, but I’ll work on one).
best,
Ahab (lvl 70 BRK-approved BM hunter) and, of course, Ming.
btw, Ming got a call-out in the Ring of Blood in Nagrand in THREE straight fights by the ring announcer.
Ravagers are legend.
Eh I kinda dislike his analysis while with 0 gear scalling considered gore does do a tad more dps than claw its not a big deal. And when you consider LB scalling off of gear (scorpid poison too) its kinda worth while to note if you stack the stats those could pass gore. If you have enough crit to fuel your WS its going to do 190+ every pet cooldown via LB which is way more than gore or claw will ever hit. This being said a BMer with 2/2 discipline 2/2 gftt and a 30% or higher crit unbuffed (which will see close to 40% buffed in a raid) can probably blow away a claw/gore pet with a windserpent.
@Karl
What you need are 3 ravagers! One that is all purpose dps with a bit of resistance and two that are spec’d for resistance. 1 spec’d for fire/arcane/shadow and one spec’d for nature/frost!
I kid of course! So much of this game is about how YOU LIKE TO PLAY. Some people swear by cats. We have one guy in my guild who brings out his Felwood bear to just about every raid and the thing can’t dps for squat, but he loves the ugly beast.
I have a raptor, scorpid and warp hunter. I typically get my pets for their usefulness first, but that’s not necessarily The Right Way™ to do it.
Don’t gimp yourself with a useless pet, but if you’re playing the game, find a pet that you have fun with!
@pelides
Well, Flameclaw (my cat from the BE starting zone) that I acquired as a lvl 20ish Draenei hunter, will always be with me. Second, Fugly, my Plaguelands boar, will stay until there is another trainable boar. I love that cat, and I love what a boar can do.
So that leave one slot for a ravager/bird/carrion-bird/scorpid. I recently tamed Trachela, but haven’t put any time into her, so she could be dropped for a ravager.
But we still need more slots…
@Karl
yeah, get a ravager. They’re great all around pets for a hunter. I love my scorpid, but I might actually dump him. The rank 4 scorpid poison thing is gonna get hit with the nerf bat soon and only one hunter in the raid can really make the most out of it. Since someone turned me onto it, I decided I’d take the lvl 3 poison so we could have 2 stacks going, but my ravager just seems to do more damage than a scorpid with rank 3 poison.
Given the choices you’ve outlined, I would say a ravager is your best bet.
@ pelides
Sounds like a plan. After leveling the cat from lvl 7, there is NO WAY I’d ever drop the cat.. and the same applies for the boar as well, until we get trainable hellboars.
So, a color-shifting ravager it is. (The color-shifting didn’t get nerfed, did it?..)
@Karl
Nope. The color shifting ones are still right outside Toshley’s Station. It’s where I got mine. But beware… if you ever go and farm ravager flesh… it becomes very confusing very fast.
had my ravager as soon as i could when tbc came out ….welcome to my bandwagon …..
what we did for our last gruul run was, all three of us hunters got new lvl70 ravagers and didn’t name them …well, all the damage from the pets got added to all of us ….. hehe
was funny as hell …. even the SV hunter was beating the clothies … they all go wtf …. till they looked at WWS …. was awesome
next time we are gonna name them all after the tank and he’ll lead the dps ….. lol
Well, after spending a couple of hours looking for her, at the cost of thousands upon thousands of naga lives, there is no way my favorite little (doesn’t have big-red mode yet - I’m only 24
) Ghost Sabre - Lucy - and I will never be parted!
Don’t care if she’s not the most ‘efficient’ or ‘best’ pet, the investment I made in her acquisition means that she will always have a plush-lined stable slot at her disposal…
Cheers
Syzygium and Lucy
Think I’ll stick with my cuddly puddy tat thanks.
I really wanted one at first, but they’ve become somewhat common on my server these days.
I’ve not seen Rimfeasts skin played by many hunters(Twilight Runner (I think thats the name??) from Stonetalon Peak at lvl 24)and quite like the fact that she’s pretty rare.
I still get a lot of people asking where to get one…. and I often send them on wild goose chases.. “it’s a rare spawn in 1k needles” etc
I also re-spec’d to BM last night. I’m loving it.
Anyways, I digress.
Ravagers = a no no from me
Heffer & Rimfeast
I’m currently torn between leveling my Humar from 64 to 70, and leveling my black raptor Spike from 67 to 70. I have the attachment to the cat obviously, having levelled from 23 to 60. From there I kinda neglected it in favour of trying out a ravager, a warp stalker and finally a purple owl from Skettis.
My main complaint about the Ravager is an aesthetic one. No, I don’t mind the “ugly”. Big fan of the Starship Troopers movie, so my ravager was called Bug. I think they look awesome.
No, my problem was that so often while idling, Bug would rest on top of me. Swaying his little Bug hips. Humping my little Dwarf face.
It just got a bit… unsettling.
“What girl hugs a cockroach? You don’t get chicks with insects!”
You know like 80% of all female toons in the game are actually dudes these days? Its best to put the whole concepts of “chicks” playing this game out of your mind.
Sure you might know 1 or 2 actual women but not enough to not just assume every female toon is a man. You’ll be better off trust me.
1) If gore didn’t go on vacation, I probably would have kept my ravager I spirited away from the blueberry island back as a wee hunter.
2) I assume all women in game are men until proven otherwise.
3) I will always keep my ghost saber because of the time it took to to find her.
Ravagers look like gnomes built them. I suppose if I had a gnome hunter I would use a ravager. Either that or a Tauren.
But yeah, there comes a time when one has to put one’s asethetic foot down. Ravagers are butt ugly, one, and two, they’re not like a pet, they’re like giant land dwelling lobsters. You don’t keep lobsters for pets. You only keep lobsters until the water starts boiling.
BTW, my utter dislike for ravager pets is not at all colored by the fact that on Tuesday night I could not freaking finish my Nethermine daily quest becuase every time a ravager finally spawned some git started taming it. Not in the least.
I said it earlier, and I’ll say it again. This game should be fun ans aesthetics play into your concept of fun. If you don’t want a big ugly bug as your dps companion… don’t do it. Cats are great dps pets as are raptors. (Kinda miss the raptor I had from 36-50!)
As long as you don’t go and gimp yourself dps-wise with a spider or aether-ray just for the sake of looking cool, grab any dps pet you want!
Me, I love my ravager. Had him for a couple months now, but then again.. I also like twisted movies and ugly music, so it fits in perfectly with my personality. Nothing like listening to The Melvins while my butt ugly raptor pounds away at Lurker!
Interesting that no one’s mentioned Wind Serpents. I have my Frostsaber, of course–there’s NOTHING like a BRK to put fear into the hearts of baddies–but I trained a Wind Serpent (the level 66 green one–lightning breath) and have been enjoying it thoroughly.
It holds aggro even better than the cat, although the DPS may be a tad lower (otoh, he’s not a Best Friend yet, either).
For a winged beast, he’s not bad–small wingspan, but the undulations tend to get a bit distracting, depending on where he is on screen. But NOTHING like a damn bat, owl or raptor! I hate those things. And no matter how unsubtle I am, we still have hunters who bring them into instances. I swear, if I were a tank, I’d kill ‘em!
Oops…/rant off
Ghost sabers with prowl are awesome in pvp. I think the extra stealth/translucense (sp?) confuses rogues when they sneak up and see, wait, what the hell is that really invisible thing? Prowl and shadowmeld are a blast, can’t put down battlegrounds..might not get past lvl 39…
