Pets on Aran FTW
“Dear BRK … we are currently stuck at [Aran] in Kara, got him down to at most 30% on our first few encounters. We had someone with us who knew about Aran’s tricks and magics, and so I was told at the door to recall my pet and fight without it. As a 41/20/0 Beastmaster my heart bled. Then again, because of Aran’s abilities such as “Flame Wreath” and “Arcane Explosion” I can see why people argue that recalling your pet is the wiser decision.
“But what about the lost 40% DPS of the pet? Since you seem a frequent Kara visitor yourself, I was wondering how you and Hobbes manage at Boss Aran? Do you also recall him? Do you respec Hobbes before every instance? What tips do you have for your fellow Beastmasters during this boss encounter? Rotseh”
Aran used to be a very pet-unfriendly fight, but this is no longer the case.
Some of the Things a BM Hunter May Do During Flame Wreath
You may allow your pet to continue DPS Aran’s face off. Pets no longer trigger Flame Wreath explosions. If you wanted to you could send your pet all over the room; he’s immune.
You may cast Bestial Wrath.
You may cast Kill Command.
You may cast Mend Pet.
You may pop your trinkets and Rapid Fire.
You may fire Arcane/Multi/Steady/Aimed Shot, (although Aimed isn’t recommended for DPS-purposes).
As for the arcane explosion you have two choices:
When you are pulled to the center, immediately tell your pet to Follow. When you start walking towards the wall, your pet will fall in beside you on your left. When you are about to get to the wall, turn clockwise. This will make your pet “hurry up” and scoot faster out of the radius of the arcane explosion. Resume DPS once you’re out of range of the explosion. Send your pet to face-rip again once the bomb goes off.
or…
If your pet is at full health and has Avoidance Rank 2 and Arcane Resistance Rank 2, you can let him stay on Aran during the blast. Hobbes will have around 7500-8000 health for this fight and the arcane explosion will hit him for about 2500-3500. Slap a Mend Pet on your pet immediately before or after the explosion and your pet will be almost fully healed after one full course of the spell.
Watching your pet eat an Aran arcane explosion is wicked-cool. Definitely spec your pet for Karazhan with Avoidance Rank 2 and Arcane Resistance Rank 2.

I usually have my cat follow me out of the explosion. I never really tried to leave him in, but I think he could also eat it with no issues.
Also, if you have a cat, using dash after he’s slowed seems to speed him up close to original speed. I don’t have problems getting him out, though, and don’t use the clockwise turning thing.
When we fight aran, as soon as we all get sucked in, I put the pet on follow and drop a snake trap (love to irritate that aran). I run through aran to the other side (free melee whack FTW), and the pet follows. We get back to the wall, in one of those alcoves, with usually 1-2 sec to spare. Generally, I’ve resumed dps by the time the arcane explosion happens. As soon as the explosion is done, I send the cat back, and generally have TBW back up, as well as rapid shot, so pop those and trinkets.
ya, my pet has both rank 2 avoidance and arcane resist, plus the 2 piece bonus of the T5 is freakin amazing now …. every time i shoot he gets healed for 85 to 150 or thereabouts ….throw a hot when needed and he’s topped off by the time u look at him.
@ Cullen
Bravo for awesome use of the snake trap! I try to drop as many snakes traps in there as possible as it really helps the interruptors… slows his casting down a bit… he uses less mana… no embarrassing sheepage.
Honestly, that is one of my favorite fights in the game. Hectic! Shorts bursts of point and shoot. Running like a madman to get out of the blizzard. Pet management. And best of all… SNAKE TRAPS! Simply the most fun thing they ever gave us!
That was a great rundown of the hunter’s role in the fight BRK. My guild struggled with that bastard for a long time, but this post should really help new hunters heading in there.
I have a ravager and I leave his ass in there all the time. I would not do it if he did not have both rank 2 avoidance and arcane resist because you cannot count on others healing your pet it a crunch.
During every Blizzard, when I am running across the room I drop a snake trap on Aran’s head. I also do it AFTER the arcane explosion if there is not FW coming, if you do it BEFORE you are just wasting your little guys.
If you like it now, just wait until you’ve got a couple pieces of T5 .. the 2-piece set bonus is awesome.
That Avoidance and AR rank 2 will also serve you well on LootReaver .. just leave kitty in clawing away at the big bad robot.
P.S… loot gods hate me too.. never seen a ranged weapon drop in ANY BC instance and I’m exalted with Violet Eye, revered with CE and we kill Al’ar and Vashj weekly.
Hey BRK, gotta be careful with pet.
Pet trained with Avoidance Rank 2, Arcane Resistance Rank 5 (or do we have 6 now? I forget.)
~8k HPs.
One-shotted by the blast twice.
The first time I think, huh, weird, that’s never happened before. When it happened again I realized that Aran was completely ignoring my pet’s resistances and Avoidance.
Same thing happened with the other hunter I was with at the time.
I’m not saying you should keep your pet out of the explosion, just don’t be an idiot like me and leave your pet in a second time if it gets blown up when it shouldn’t.
An annoying bug but easy to work around.
Yeah snake traps are awesome against Aran. Anything to take his focus off the raid, even for a moment.
AR 2 and Avoid 2 really do help with Aran, and with the Prince as well. I’ve kept my GIR on Prince during the entire battle and even when he does the AOE attack after enfeebling GIR seems to take at most 1500 damage.
Interesting thing is I always turn around right before the arcane explosion. Never saw it as a trick to get the pet back faster… just a way for me to start shooting that evil mage yet again.
