This Old WoW

“Dear BRK, if you still have problems with your sound in WoW, this link might be useful. Grimshar”

Thank you Grimshar, may your most-desired item drop into your clean and soft hands very soon.

To save you all the trouble, here’s a synopsis of the info on that site:

Blizz f__ked with us again.

In a more detailed and less-curse-laden format, here’s the skinny from their referenced Blue-Post:

The default for the active channel count was changed to 32 recently during work on 2.2.0. You may be able to raise it again, however on some systems you my start getting crackle if you push it too high.

You can change that in config.wtf:

set Sound_NumChannels “howmany”

or by console:

/console Sound_NumChannels “howmany”

[The default] actually used to be 128 on the Mac build, but we found some extremely high sound density areas that were causing some stutter/crackling issues, so we toned it down a bit. As we improve and tune up the new sound engine we may change that default back to a higher value in a future rev. In the meantime play around with it and find what works best for your system.

So tonight we’re taking our Mac’s sound capabilities to the limit and going back to 128. Of course, we’ll report our results.

And we’re adding a Label called Troubleshooting for just this type of situation.

Either I am missing the roar of my pet when she’s hungry or the addon is not working, or the sound is off a bit. Or i am crazy.

@for the pie: I’d say all of the above! :)

I’ve noticed a few minor sound glitches so far, but since I also had some before the “change”, I didn’t care too much! But thanks for the info: I may give it a try and see how it works!

This is my not-really-delurking comment as ordered by TJ:

Hoooooooow do you label your posts with blogger/blogspot? I want to start using labels as well but I’ve gotten lost in the settings and can’t find my way home. :/

    mana bb,

At the bottom of the compose screen, there is a box called labels, you type anything you want in there and it becomes the label. You can show all and it will show the labels you have already used.

figure this /console command will work with PC versions as well as Macs?

Hope so — I only hear about half my shots right now and it’s ticking me off.

75% working means it’s shipping and we’ll patch it from there! Standard software company procedures, or so it seems.

Same here, not only do a significant number of shots not deliver the standard twang of the the bowstring, but it also effects the sound of the pick when I mine, and when I create a a stack of food, or grinding stones etc…

Good to know about the channel issue. I have a couple of sound devices I can play with if need be.

2.2.3 is heading to the PTR now and includes, among other things, a fix for sounds being generated by or on the player. So maybe our shot sounds will be working again.

I just set my new iMac to 128 channels, I think almost all of the sounds are back! :)

    yes it will.

BRK: The console command works and you will hear many sounds that you are not hearing now. BUT… a lot of sounds will still be missing.

On my hunter I think I hear only half of my shots being fired… its so annoying that I often turn it off while soloing. And when instancing, I’m learning to rely on visual cues for better timing my steady shots to avoid clipping.

Other sound related issues on the mac: the voice chat sucks hard. At least that’s been my experience. Have to turn my mic up to 250% for someone to hear me (barely), and push to talk doesn’t seem to work.

I miss the aural depth of pre 2.2 WoW. Sigh.

  12. Melnayo on October 4th, 2007 6:53 pm

It seems to be a universal issue that voice chat is only somewhere around 25%-35% of the volume it should be, maybe 40%-50% with the mic volume turned all the way up in the game.

    @melanyo

Quote from: Hortus (Source)We will be updating the PTR for 2.2.3 PTR soonish.

I do not have any more information about the PTR at this time, when specific information is available it will be posted here.

Please delete your WoWtest folder from within your World of Warcraft Directory and wait until an announcement is made before downloading the new patch.

I would advise not attempting to copy characters until an announcement is made unless you want them to end up on the wrong server like 2.2.2

so i would put it anywhere from 1 to 1.5 months away min …. just my guesstimate.
