BRK Movie, Take One

How to use your pet and Misdirection to perform a Line-of-Sight pull with a caster-mob and effectively remove it from a group.

And here’s the link to download the full-sized version. If Apple yells at us, we may have to delete it though. 5000 hits per day, 30 MB of data… they may come after us for network fees!

Edit: Here’s our first experiment in compression/frame settings:Since the fps was lowered from 24 to 15 and the mono channel lowered from 48kHz to 24kHz, we decreased the size of this movie file to 8.7MB. If you see a massive difference between the two movies that justifies the 30MB file, let us know.

    lol. that was awesome.

You even did it in a dwarf-like voice!

What do you mean you didn’t do the dwarf voice on purpose?

    oh…

  2. BRK on October 11th, 2007 3:03 am

FY: for some reason, the RSS feed for this post plays a different movie - one about TF2.

  6. RedForty on October 11th, 2007 3:44 am

I, personally, LOVE the announcer voice! You’re so like, ‘Check this OUT!’

    Rock on, BRK!

    Keep ‘em coming!

  7. Hawk on October 11th, 2007 3:48 am

If he’s going to sound like a dwarf he’ll have to record his lines drunk.

Good stuff BRK, could make a series of hunter tutorial videos. :)

  8. Anonymous on October 11th, 2007 3:51 am

Woohoo Brk. First of many I hope. So question; what is the addon that shows you the move and what damage it hit for, over your head? Such as 80 (Arcane Shot).

  9. Alan on October 11th, 2007 4:01 am

Lol! Love the announcer-dramatic-comic-goofy inflections in your voice.

    Awesome.

P.S. The video was awesome too. Make more stuff. Tutorials of teh BRK awjesome sauze. Want. More!

  10. smgeier on October 11th, 2007 5:06 am

    I really enjoyed that!

@anonymous, the addon is SCT and SCTD (Scrolling Combat Text, SCT Damage) I believe. He’s got all his addons listed on the right side of his page, below the Mandatory Reading

  11. Bete on October 11th, 2007 5:08 am

    that was great.
    short, sweet, and smart.

    thank you.

To short but very sweet, and very cool indeed. Like the voice but wondered for a second if it was you.

That’s only 150GB over a day or two, you gotta figure you’re on 90th percentile bandwidth measurement which eliminates the bumps, so you should be fine.

Cool vocals too, does the Mac come with some of Marvin the Martian voice modulator?

Was the pull Arcane rank1? I use scorpid sting cuz i thought it created no aggro. Is Arcane1 better?

I feel like a info sponge, so Thanks to all!

  14. Dez on October 11th, 2007 7:05 am

    Spielberg would be proud.

    Keep up the good work.

  15. Karl on October 11th, 2007 7:38 am

Thx mr.brk, i did not know that. Keep the magic coming.

  16. Knotbeard on October 11th, 2007 8:03 am

I am absolutely wowed by this tactic… Call me a noob but you just took me from a hunter that soloed his way to 70 to a hunter that will solo outland elites because I can actually pull them one at a time now…

This is pure genious. Thank you for this…

  17. Wamogri on October 11th, 2007 8:06 am

That was great! Keep it up, looking forward to the next one. :D

  18. Onionpeels on October 11th, 2007 8:11 am

Hm, nice. LoS pulls I’ve done. Pet LoS though.. I have not.

I think I’ll log into WoW now just to give that a try…

  19. Someone on October 11th, 2007 9:50 am

@platehealer: “Was the pull Arcane rank1? I use scorpid sting cuz i thought it created no aggro. Is Arcane1 better?”

BRK used misdirection on his cat, so the higher the threat the better here.

@BRK: Didn’t even “looked” at the sound! Downloaded the 30 MB version, played it, was like: “WTH? 30 MB for *this*?”, then finally read the post. Also, was playing some music so I played with sound off! :)

After reading the first few lines of the post, then I realized what was it you intended to show with the video. Still, 30 MB for a “better” quality version that is still a bit low on quality?…

This video fits nicely on a “Tips and Tricks” section, although you could also make another one *without* using MD for all the hunters out there that need to do similar tasks and haven’t reached MD level yet!

  20. BRK on October 11th, 2007 10:47 am

Technical Report: We are still experimenting with the WoW client movie settings and the iMovie export settings. We are certain that we can get at least the same video quality for 1/4 of the file-size. We just need to read and practice more.

Thank you all for the feedback. This is indeed just the first of what we hope to be a long list of fun tips and tricks that the hunter class can perform.

  21. Galoheart on October 11th, 2007 11:16 am

Awesome BRK, a man learns more by seeing than just reading. I”m not even a main Hunter, but i like the video tactics. Will remember to teach that to my little lvl 23 BM Hunter & Pet in training. Thats if i can ever get the urge to lay down my shield to play my Hunter and Pet duo..

  22. Pike on October 11th, 2007 11:41 am

That was great– loved the announcer voice, and loved the cheesy lightning effects at the beginning. Also loved the clear and concise movie. Definitely looking forward to more!

  23. Webmosher on October 11th, 2007 11:47 am

    BRK,

Thanks for the vid. To coin a phrase “Jeebuz! I can’t wait to get misdirect.”

My biggest kudo though is the general quality of the vid. Not only can I see what this is about, your use of camera angle and well directed commentary makes this short and very sweet.

As far as your voice goes: sounds natural to me, and you know what I’d really like? If ya have the time, go on the WoWInsider podcast and liven that bunch up a bit. I can understand if you might not have a heck of alot of time though.

Looking forward to more vids (do a kiting one *hint* *hint* *nudge* *nudge*).

    Laters…

I highly reccomend you to use the mpeg4 codec

  25. Grumpy on October 11th, 2007 12:42 pm

Sounded good, need to get my magnifying glass out to see if I can see the screen better.

I thought at first it was small to you being a Dwarf, but then I thought maybe it’s just because you play on a MAC )P

  26. Anonymous on October 11th, 2007 12:44 pm

You suggest MPEG4 over H.264 why?

  27. Kamehameha on October 11th, 2007 12:47 pm

Is it just me or does BRK sound like a dork? You know.. One of those guys that always were talking about dungeons and dragons in high school kind of dork…

Other than that - nice little video tutorial…

  28. Erastus on October 11th, 2007 1:16 pm

I’m sure that a few of you know what its like to work somewhere where the computer you use, ‘your’ computer, isn’t really yours.

I’ve come quite addicted to the knowledge and humor provided here by BRK and friends. So when I see a movie made by the one and only, my only though is to see it and learn all I can from the only hunter trainer that doesn’t charge a few G to teach you a new skill.

Ah, but this is where my place of employment gets in the way of my WoW. (The nerve!!!) I can’t see the embedded movies and these computers don’t have quicktime installed. No big problem right, just go to apple, download, enjoy right? Nope, I’m not privileged enough to make changes to my own computer. I guess I’ll just have to wait till I get home to watch this gem.

…But until then, I feel like the only kid on the block still riding a Huffy…with a flat tire.

  29. Erastus on October 11th, 2007 1:20 pm

    Speaking of hunter trainers…Why can’t Blizz replace one of Ironforge’s (randomly named hunter trainer) with our very own BRK Hunter Extraordinaire {Hunter Trainer}

  30. ArmsandFury on October 11th, 2007 1:56 pm

That is indeed the voice of BRK!

Try and get him to say that he is “totally offended” for a really good laugh.

  31. Doomilias on October 11th, 2007 2:02 pm

the inflection and wit is present for each and every one of our raids. we have fun. ’specially with the squeaky priesty squeeing away.

and oh. @kame. he is more of a nerd than a dork. but so am i. and so are you. dragonballzftw!

If I scratch you gently behind the ears, do I get a kiting and a chain trapping movie? I would scratch ever so gently!

Personal and physical entreaties for movies must, we repeat MUST, be accompanied with two guarantees:

    1) that you are 100% genetically and physically female and have been since conception

    2) that Mrs BRK will never read these comments

  34. kunukia on October 11th, 2007 3:20 pm

Good job, make lots of these. I love your stuff, and I have been a hunter main for two years.
I do NOT think you sound like a Dwarf, BTW. Not gravelly enough for a Dwarf…and no scottish accent!

  35. Katherine on October 11th, 2007 4:01 pm

    Great Stuff, BRK!
I spent the last hour out in Nagrand practicing and it rocks!

    BRK,
    Thank you again
When I first read your blog in March I was a level 11 hunter and totally clueless; my toon, Duart of Exodar is most grateful as well
I can only fit in a few hours a week and I enjoy exploring what the Developers have created for us so I have not been very efficient at levelling, as you can see by my current level of 52, but the tips I have learned here have bade the trip a lot of fun.

Could I please request that one of your next tutorial videos include some help on the running jump spin 180 shoot spin back keep running skill?. it along with chain trapping above 2 times is one area where I need to work on my skills.
Thanks again for a great Class blog!

    Hey BRK,

I just emailed you some screenshots of the Quicktime export settings I use when making something destined for the Google/YouTube meat grinder.

H.264 is the way to go. It generates a higher quality picture at a lower bitrate than MPEG-4 does. At a higher Bitrate, MPEG-4 will look better, but it will also be a larger file.

H.264 uses a radically different compression algorithm than MPEG-4. Highly compressed MP4 will look a lot like a horribly compressed series of JPEG’s. Big blocky compression whereas the H.264 compression isn’t as “jaggy”. A video editor term… I swear!

    Hope the screenshots help.

Now, if only Blizzard would give us access to the uncompressed video streams instead of MP4, H.264 and Apple Intermediate… I’d be very happy. H.264, MP4 and Apple Intermediate are all output formats… not working formats.

    So close… yet so far!

  38. BryGy on October 11th, 2007 4:43 pm

That was great! I can’t wait to see an example of your famed chain trapping or your jump-spin-kiting move.

  39. erastus on October 11th, 2007 5:44 pm

So, I get home for lunch and excitedly run for the computer. My son is currently on mine so I rush to the wifes and watch this amazing video! I show it to the beautiful gun bunny wife of mine and she loves it too! Great Job and I am quite anxious to see the next one and the next one and the…

Of course, being the fire mage that every MM hunter wishes he was :-), Its hard to try this out myself.

I’ve read on here so many people saying that they’ve crossed over to BM. Dare I say you’re on your way to making me roll a BRK of my own.

    Awesome Stuff!

Now I want you to respec to Survival and chain trap some clefthoofs to town gogogogogo

  41. platehealer on October 11th, 2007 6:49 pm

Wait a minute, must have clarification!

@platehealer: BRK used misdirection on his cat, so the higher the threat the better here.

I thought because the mob to be pulled was surrounded by other mobs, that brk would use a low threat pull so only one mob responded instead of a group. I understand if you’re not concerned about overpulling then Redirect with as much damage as possible. Well, i think i understand i’m not 70 so i can’t experiment yet.

So was it Arcane rank1? Cuz it didn’t seem like that much damage? And finally, my question, would it ever make sense to redirect using scorpid which does 0 damage.

    Someone plz clarify. Thanks!

  42. Macdoug on October 11th, 2007 6:59 pm

    Huntard alert…

How did you get Hobbes to stay put while you ran and pulled snakey? Even at 61 I still have much to learn…

    Macdoug & Macscreech

  43. pelides on October 11th, 2007 7:01 pm

    @Platehealer

When you’re using misdirect, you want to slam the target as hard as you can. It’s about the only time I ever use aimed shot. My typical misdirect pull is aimed shot > arcane and an auto usually takes the last charge.

With that scenario right there, I’ve amassed anywhere from 2500-4000 threat for the tank. It’s going to take a bit of effort for me to rip aggro away with that much of a head start.

Now, if BRK, who is obviously a skilled puller!, had used multi shot for the pull, several mobs would have gone all bonkers on Hobbes and BRK would have used only 1 of his 3 misdirect charges.

Funny thing is… I almost never misdirect to my pet when soloing… I just scream, fire multi shot, and tab target like mad with auto shot until I’m neck deep in things that want me and my ravager dead.

But then again, I’m only marginally sane.

Really, you probably shouldn’t listen to me! Proper pulling is one of the single most important skills a hunter can learn. UD Strat is a great place to really test your pulling skills. So many wandering mobs and mobs packed really tightly together. If you can pull single mobs or one mob pack without grabbing two or three packs… you’re well on your way!

Once you get that down… then you can start reading my posts and learn how to rack up massive repair bills and have glorious delusional fun!

  44. pelides on October 11th, 2007 7:02 pm

    @macdoug

Go over to where you want your pet to stay put and press the “Stay” button on your pet bar.

Then he won’t follow you anymore. Once the battle is done, he will return to the same spot. Put him back on “follow” if you are moving along.

  45. RyuHakubi on October 11th, 2007 8:38 pm

@plate - I understand what you’re trying to say, boss. You’re trying to ask if he used Arcane Shot Rank 1 to minimize the chance of aggroing the other uglies from the larger radius of heavy damage. It *looks* like that’s what he did, I see “Arcane Shot” on the higher definition movie version, but if it was Rank 1 or max rank, I can’t tell.

About your question of using Scorpid sting to aggro without damage, I’ve done that trick myself, but I have no idea what the potential for a neighbor aggro is.

    ‘zat what you were asking?

  46. TazButane on October 11th, 2007 9:35 pm

Nice job! I would love to see more video instructions with comments on what you are doing. Even watching the boss fights with comments instead of music would be much more informative IMO.

  47. BRK on October 11th, 2007 10:39 pm

Yes, it was Arcane Shot (Rank 1), our standard Pull Shot. And for the reasons specifically mentioned by others; so we didn’t aggro the other mobs in close proximity.

  48. platehealer on October 12th, 2007 9:45 pm

    thanks for the clarification re:arcane1.

Everything below this is cuz i’m bored@work on fri, plz feel free to skip right on past. :)

The screen showed “80 arcane shot”, though 80 is a low amount of dmg, thus arcane1, it doesn’t quite make sense.

The dmg formula (wowwiki) for arcane is:

    RAP * 0.15 + X (arcane dmg)
where X=15 for lvl 1 arcane.

    Your RAP = 1747

    so your dmg should = 262.05 + 15
    =277.05

factoring: Since Patch 2.0.6 The base damage of X has been reduced by about 9% and the bonus damage from ranged attack power reduced from 20% to 15%. Let’s call 20-15% 17.5%

    Bonus from attack power = (1 - .175) * 1747 * .15 = 216.19

    X = (15 - (.09 * 15)) = 13.65

    =216.19+13.65=229.84

Factoring this: Recently, perhaps in Patch 2.0.10, the bonus damage from ranged attack power was stealth buffed back up to 20%. [Not Confirmed]

This, I assume, would basically undo the 15-20% reduction, so we’re back to:

    262.05 + 13.65 = 275.7

I don’t know how to factor this: Since Patch 2.1.0 Casting lower ranks of Arcane Shot than your maximum rank will now reduce the bonus you receive from attack power.

So i guess i have to assume that the final mod plus some possible amount of arcane resistance dropped you to 80 dmg.

If that mob has zero arcane resist, then they reduced the RAP bonus:

    if Y + 13.65 = 80 then Y = 66.35
    66.35/262.05 = .253
    so they dropped the RAP bonus by 1 - .253 = 75%!

I guess that makes sense for what you use it for at 70.

Thanks again, good vids, and explanation of game mechanics.
