Music! Don’t Kill Us

BRK » 14 October 2007 » In Guide, Movie »

We were doing a “fake movie” as a lark and like it so much we completed production and are slapping it up here. It’s not Caddyshack, but what is.We did five attempts at chain-trapping a raptor through Refuge Point and every time somebody would attack it. Hunters, warlocks, mages… they just wouldn’t leave us alone. We gave up when we almost yelled a zone-wide cursing smackdown, and we really don’t want to get banned.

But the points of the movie are clear:

1. Always watch your trap cooldown when chain-trapping.

2. Put distance between yourself and your trapped mob to add that running-time the mob will need to get to you.

3. If you don’t want to kill the mob, use Distracting Shot. It builds threat without doing damage.

4. Refuge Point is full of n00bs.

Something we didn’t do: notice how we stood almost on top of our traps? That’s not necessary. We could have kept running straight so that the trap was directly in the mob’s path. We stayed on the trap for movie-making purposes, along with a bunch of other running amok stuff we did.

The window we opened at the beginning was the macro window. It shows the special chaintrapping macro we made just for this movie:

/cast Distracting Shot(Rank 1)
/stopcasting

And if you want it, the 25MB full-sized movie is here.

That last little bit was hilarious.

If you’re dead set on chain trapping in newb areas, best to do it late at night when all the kiddies are in bed.

I do find it funny, however, when that hunter broke your trap and screwed up your chain trapping.

Hey, I was just trying to help, I didn’t know I was on a movie set:(

Nice movie, BRK, thanks a lot!

    Yah, ditch the music…
I like the ones with just voice and game sounds.
Maybe it is because I am not of the younger generation, who grew up with music videos, but in general I really dislike the music on WoW stuff I would otherwise enjoy.

on the subject of your poll, I think you should check out stage6. It’s a highly underused video-streaming site that streams at really high quality. I find it most useful for quick-moving WoW movies were I need good resolution to have any idea what’s going on. Anyway, you can take a look at:

Which mod throws up the ‘Trap Ready’ text? That would be most handy to have.

What are all the cool down bars as well, one looks like Hunter Timers, but I’m not familiar with the one on the right.

I love your movies! I have learned so much from your blog. The movies just make a wonderful site even better.

    Thanks for all you do.

With all these movies you’ve been doing lately, are you going to set up a Video Tutorial section on your blog? I think that would be really handy for newcomers.

Another great video but, hey, drop the music ;)

I like the Valkyries as much as the next guy and some of your movements matched the music nicely, but it’s nice to just hear the voice of the master and absorb his teachings :D

    Nice done.

But why don’t you do it bigger. Like pulling a Devilsaur from Un’goro crater to let’s say crossroads ?

Enjoyed that, the end made me chuckle. ;D Keep up the great movies.

Adding the movies has definitely been a great idea BRK! Nice to see how to effectively chain trap, rather than unknowingly pulling 4 other saps into an instance with me :)

Another good movie BRK, it is one thing to hear the theory but to see it in action completes the lesson somehow. I hope you have revoked the license of the hunter who broke your trapping lesson.

Awesome video. I liked how the music faded out a bit when you talked, so you were very easy to hear and the music was hardly a distraction!
For raid videos, it may be preferable to leave the music off (which I agree with!), but for something like this, music just makes it a little more fun to watch. :)

And you sound so disappointed at the end, I felt bad for ya, man. Not only did he “help” you by attacking the raptor, he looked pretty clumsy at it.

As for the music, Ride of the Valkyries >>>> any of the nuRock/neoPunk/RockHipHop silliness that seems to infest most other WoW movies. Though, if you could have cut to Yakkity Sax once you started pulling the Raptor, that would have been delightful.

    BRK you made my night:)

We been wiping on tidewalker for last 3 hours and that video really hit the spot.

Excellent choice of music. I also thought the fading of the music when you did the voice over was especially a nice touch.

The ride in the beginning was perfectly timed, heck of a job.

It seems my comments on music have generated a bit of controversy. While personally i believe that music and especially classical music serves as a great addition to any video, I will watch them with or without music.

    P.S Who is TJ ?:)

  19. Pike on October 15th, 2007 11:25 am

I actually really liked the music that time, it fit quite well, heehee.

I also thought the fading of the music when you did the voice over was especially a nice touch.

Thank you for noticing and commenting. As we said, this was going to be a “fake movie” but the commentary wasn’t lost under the music so we kept it “real”.

Does anyone else throw in a concussion shot when they are trapping? I find the extra time it takes to get to the trap can make all the difference in the world. I think a distraction/concussion shot macro is in order for my new pull shot. That and I’ll have my arcane shot ready for the focus fire. Just a thought.

  22. BRK on October 15th, 2007 5:09 pm

Concussive Shot is very handy for delaying the trap and thus speeding up your next trap’s cooldown. Good tactic, we use it, just not against Moroes as we’re not positive those mobs aren’t resistant to it.

  23. Freejack on October 15th, 2007 8:52 pm

Another great flick, BRK. I coulda done without the music, or maybe a different selection. That’s the problem with music, trying to match the mood and tempo of the film. The epic nature of Flight of the Valkyries didn’t really mesh with the slow nature of chain trapping.

“Everybody Walk The Dinosaur” by Was Not Was might have fit better :) Perhaps a remix?

And, of course, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture could be the theme song for almost any Dwarven slaughterfest.

I found Sorrens Timers today and update of Hunter Timers. Give it a try works great. I think thats what BRK is using.

I loaded sct and sct cooldowns last night, and that threw up the trap ready text. I have trouble watching those cooldowns, hopefully that will help.

With regards to your last comment about not standing right on the trap waiting for a mob:

You actually should do everything you can to NOT stand on your trap. If you stand on your trap and wait for the mob to come to you one of two things can happen.

#1 - The mob will hit you and then get trapped.

#2 - The mob gets trapped mid-attack. You do not get hit before the mob is frozen, however as soon as the trap wears off, no matter where you are stand (you could be two zones away) you will take the damage from the attack that was halted mid-swing.

In five mans this isn’t really a big deal. You take 500-1000 damage and go about your business. But in heroics you risk the chance of a one shot kill. So the best strat is to stand somewhere away from your trap and to make sure the trap is in a straight line between you and the mob.
