Not the Movie We Planned On

BRK » 15 October 2007 » In Movie, Pets, Raids »

Our Kara group cleared through Prince on Friday night, so tonight was optional bosses. We were stacked with two warlocks and a mage so Illhoof was our primary target. He was destroyed on the first attempt, no deaths, Holy Pally got a sweet piece of chest armor.

And we forgot to record it. /headdesk

With no priests or resto druids or resto shaman, Nightbane was impossible - we wiped three times - and we didn’t have the fortitude to try Netherspite. We decided to clear Maiden and Attumen for kicks and perhaps that one piece of loot someone needed.

And we remembered to record the Maiden fight.

Movie Time!We knew going in that people were going to die and that’s OK. What we were mostly concerned with was showing all the BRK-readers how well a Beastmaster hunter’s pet can withstands AoE attacks. There is no way in the world Hobbes could tank Maiden, but stand there and absorb her Holy AoE is a piece of cake. According to the WWS report, Hobbes took 14,000 damage from her and only received healing from Mend Pet spells that we ourselves cast. He’s a champ, he is. /cast Feed Pet

The full-size 13MB movie available here.

Tomorrow is Gruul’s Lair. Let’s see if we can remember to record Hobbes’s multiple deaths there.

Edit: Twice in the movie we mentions Fire Resistance Rank 2 and “the proper resistance.” Hobbes took Holy damage and there is no pet-resistance for that. Doh.

I am afraid that I could not understand all that you said around the middle of the movie. Otherwise, very good as usual.

just curious, why do you use the word amalgamated at the end of your video? I was just wondering, otherwise, you were pretty beast, except on those repentances.

You were probably thinking of resisting this part. But fear not while it does not provide evidence or an example of training “the proper resistance”, it does however show the wonders of [Avoidance: Rank 2] and [2/2 Improved Mend Pets]

    From wowwiki:
    Abilities
Holy Fire: 1 second cast, 3238-3762 fire damage up front and 1750 fire damage every 2 seconds for 12 seconds. DoT is considered a Magic effect and should be dispelled.

Nice vid, but you could further show how Hobbes does good if you tell how much AoE damage every other melee took, say, the rogue if there was one, should probably be taking AoE damage anyway…

I’m also a firm believer in resistances, even more so than in extra armor or HP because armor and stamina from pet talents are TOO expensive for the worth. I only use Greater Stamina and Natural Armor until 30 or so when we get 2nd rank resists and TPs start to not be enough to teach everything to the pet! Yes, I know my pet could take more physical damage otherwise, but what do you fight in WoW that doesn’t have a caster or two throwing things at your pet? And the look on another hunter’s eyes when we do an elite fire dragon 3 levels above our own and he tries and fails miserably: no money can pay that! :)

We would show the WWS report, someone, but they’ve been down and won’t load. :(

We say, “a BRK Worldwide Amalgamated production” for two reasons:

    1) The BRK Legal, Mortgage Forclosure, and Knockoff Tommy Bahama Clothier department requires it.

    2) Because… well, that’s our thing. It’s nonsensical but we try to keep this blog light-spirited.

    Great movie once again.

Not the greatest fight obviously, but very good at showing how great a pet can handle itself in AoE.

Heh… it was just not your night for Repentance. :P Mend Pet, Rapid Fire, trinkets… But in the end it went pretty well anyway.

I have got to ask though, seeing as you are pretty well decked out fo such a fight, wouldn’t Hobbes do a bit better than a BM’s pet who is somewhat new to Kara?

Another useful film. What I would really like to see is Nightbane which I find tricky.
Anyway, keep up the good advice. I respeced BM, tamed BearToo (a Blackwind Sabercat) and hit the top of the damage table on Opera (R&J) and Nightbane. That felt pretty good and worth a Sporling Snack for BearToo. WSS showed us at 793dps on R&J which I dont quite believe but maybe true since we can just whale away … not much subtlety needed there. Anyway, we keep trying to refine technique and you have proven our best source. Thanks

@kraxis: “I have got to ask though, seeing as you are pretty well decked out fo such a fight, wouldn’t Hobbes do a bit better than a BM’s pet who is somewhat new to Kara?”

Hobbes will get a bit more STA, Armor and AP from decent gear (and even some resist), but the main damage reduction comes from avoidance, the BM talents and the magic resists. A non-hobbes (meaning a pet from a less geared hunter!), would probably be more sensitive of missing/delaying Mend Pets, but that would be just about it: if you keep MP running, with an eventual recall pet if you couldn’t have some healer have some HoT running on him…

Well, I have been a reader of this page since my mid forty’s or so and was a BM hunter back then…I respec’d MM about 2 months ago and have been loving it…Only thing was my cat, Biddie, has been helping take Maiden down since we started kara sometime back. So BRK no offence man but I kinda took offence to the “how well a Beastmaster hunter’s pet can withstand AoE attacks” please we all know Beastmasters can deal damage but try not to single any one talent build in you compairisons..My pet can do just as good as yours and so can a SV’s…try to remember its not just BM who read your blog.

  11. BRK on October 15th, 2007 2:11 pm

Well don’t be offended; that’s a little heavy-handed. But unless you’ve got Improved Mend Pet and the 10% bonus to pet health, MM and SV hunter’s pets just can’t do as well as a BM pet.

Yes you can have Avoidance and resistances, and no the differences between Improved Mend Pet and reguluar Mend Pet aren’t drastic. But a BM pet is stronger, more survivable, and does more damage than the others.

Perhaps we should have said, “how well a hunter’s pet does against AoE.” But we’ve been advocating the BM-spec since Januray 07; we’re kinda partial to it. :)

THANK YOU to everybody for all the comments on the movies. Everything from the “no music!” to “I’d like to see…” and “these are great!” are truly appreciated.

Your contributions to this blog are extremely welcome. Thanks a ton.

Question:What do you guys think about a hunter`s pet(MM last time I checked)doing the hatefull bolt off-tanking in Curator. If its possible plase tell me what things the pet should have .

Im the priest doing the healing ,not the hunter , and would like to know if Stoichkov(the pet)can fullfill the roll efficiently.

Great movie ,will show it to the guild Huntards.

  13. BRK on October 15th, 2007 2:54 pm

We’d love to try that! But since we always run with a tank and off-tank, the off-tank would really have nothing else to do but put on his DPS-gear and smash the flares.

Prot tanks DPSing? We shall let others more learned than us discuss that. :)

“Hobbes took Holy damage and there is no pet-resistance for that”

there is no resistance in the game for holy damage, period.

  15. Indy on October 15th, 2007 4:25 pm

First time we took down Curator, it was using my second pet as hateful bolt off-tank. A bear, with lots of sta, arcane resist.

After taking down Maiden, I hoofed it down to Darkshire to change pets at the stable to get the bear out for the Curator fight. It made a real difference… Curator had been frustrating the guild for a while, and it was using my pet like this that let us take him down.

These days we use my main pet to go after flares. (Thanks BRK for that handy macro…)

  16. Julian on October 15th, 2007 5:18 pm

So all out stam and arcane resis , but my concern is if a pet can out aggro the tank`s healer. Is Growl and normal pet meele damage enough?

The one time we tried this, the Healading was making way too much aggro for the pet overcome.

  17. Webmosher on October 15th, 2007 6:55 pm

Alrighty BRK, I watched this twice to be sure, but did you say “Serpent Sting” at the beginning, or was this a mistell?

If not, why did you pick Serpent vs. Scorpid in this instance? Does Maiden simply not do as much melee type damage and its not needed?

    Thankee sai

  18. Anonymous on October 16th, 2007 12:48 pm

Curious here, and I know someone will know; does the hunter’s pet count for the holy-fire-stacking effect of being too close together? Normally I find even with just 2 melee and tank, someone is always flagged as “too close to X”, and if pets did count it would surely only exacerbate this.

If what I just said is completely dumb, feel free to tell me that too :P.

    BRK,

I just watched your Moroes video. A suggestion if I may:

If you decide you want a hunter to chain trap for longer, which we’ve successfully done, they will need to use distracting shot on the trap target or healer agroe will eventually overcome the hunter’s agroe. You can do this when the target is trapped. I recommend doing it while running to another position as moving prevents your auto-shot from firing.

    From WoW-wiki:

Holy Fire can also be spell reflected. It actually deals fire damage (not holy), thus Major Fire Protection Potions are useful.

  21. Freejack on October 24th, 2007 8:08 pm

    @ Anon

I found this also on WoWWiki:

“Pets are not valid targets for Holy Fire or Holy Wrath, and may thus be sent into melee with no fear of causing a chain.”
