Coolness Quotient
Note: Although presented as a direct quote, this “Dear BRK” email is heavily edited for clarity purposes.
“Dear BRK, I love my pet gorilla, DK. He has a nice blend of abilities: +2% to damage and a reasonable +4% to health. He can only Bite but he has one thing that a cat can not compete with: Thunderstomp.
“Thunderstomp is an AoE attack that generates a Moderate amount of additional aggro. I can not count the number of times I’ve thrown in my pet, counted to five, and turned growl On to keep my pet’s aggro just behind that of the warrior. If the healer pulls off some spectacular crit and pulls aggro off the warrior early in the fight, DK’s Thunderstamp will cause the mob to turn around and head back to the pet where the warrior is standing there with a Taunt ready and waiting.
“I would like your opinion on this wonderful but little utilized pet choice. I know my entire guild has been shocked by what my little monkey can do. Khanjiro and DK.”
There is one reason and one reason only we don’t see more gorilla pets: the complete and total lack of gorillas above level 50. Why aren’t there gorillas in Terrokar Forest? We would love to grab a gorrila-pet and take him to Gruul’s Lair for some Gorilla-vs-Gruul action.
You know what else you don’t see? Sporebat pets. Why? Because they’re ugly.
You know what else you don’t see? Crocolisk pets. Why? Because they’re noisy, (apologies to Irwin; he knows we think he’s cool).
You know what else you don’t see? Dragonhawks. Why? Because they’re butterflies. Who hunts with a butterfly?
We have a purple Tallstrider named Battlechickn. Why? Because he’s tall, purple, and available at level 70. He’s got a horrible attack-sound, he’s not much stronger than Hobbes, he certainly doesn’t do as much DPS, but he is purple and coolness counts, people.
Gorillas have coolness-quotient, and that’s a BRK Fact. We’re not going to flame anybody for their choice of a gorilla pet. If you’ve got one, show him off as much as you can.

I love my Lost Torrance also. There’s nothing better than a little dwarf chick with a big gun and a guant purple bird.
I just wish that I could name him Pecker.
I *really* wanted a gorilla badly while I was leveling up. I tried over and over again to stable my cat and give my gorilla a chance to catch up to me… but their DPS is sooooo low! It was taking forever to grind my way through the quests, and eventually I just gave up. My level 47 gorilla is still my favorite, even if I can’t use him anywhere outside of Stormwind.
I’m with you that if a hunter wants more pets to stable we should. Even if we have to pay for like those dang Bank slots. WE NEED MORE PETs SLOTS!
Blizz can give more more arrow/ammo slots, but not an increase in Haste, at least I didn’t see one it’s still 15%. They can give me a Huge LW Bag, 24 slots, they can increase the Guild Bank but they cant give me a large STABLE! pffft
Our pets are our friends and we should be able to take care of as many as we choose.
That said have a good weekend!
Galor, MaggieMay and Rex and wish we had more.
Definatly agree withyou there.
More stable slots please.
Aye, stable slots should be purchasable like bank slots.. It really doesn’t make much sense!
And yeah, I like the gorilla!
While I love the recent changed to the hunter for PvP reasons, and the scaling of serpent sting to help out the MM spec for PvE… I kinda wish they’d give pets a good look over.
I abandoned my wolf when TBC came out and started taming lots of random things to try them out. Nether Rays, Ravagers, Spore Bats… etc… They all lack stats/abilities to make them useful.
Only pet I kept was the ravager. Then I abandoned him for a scorpid… which I thought I’d hate, and then came to love. I still have my 2nd cat. Back in the day I traded my snow leopard in for a STV tiger that had a faster attack speed. I still have her and will likely cancel my account with her. (abandoning the snow leopard was hard enough… particularly on my wife’s warrior who was so used to fighting alongside her, in ZG it would freak out the other melee dps… my wife always knew Nephthys wasn’t a mob because “she moves different”)
But alot of pets types need some love, and I feel some more AP scaling pet abilities would be welcome choices for those who still try to make MM work for raiding.
Ex: pets with a rand/ravage type bleed ability, maybe a skettis bird or owl with a moonfire type dott. I think dot-type attacks are a good way to go as it will allow for extra PvE dps options without compromising the PvP balance at all (due to resillience).
I miss my scorpid… think I’ll dump my ravager or wind serpent for one soon. The wind serpent never really grew on me.
Or they could just give us MORE STABLE SLOTS!
Another thing I’d like to see: windfury totem working for hunter pets! If you happen to be in a physical dps group buffing them up, the least they could do is toss a bone to hunter pets from the shaman.
Or we could tame a druid in a feral form. BUT, it would have to be the opposite faction.
Ah, to be Swamplord Mueslix.
My happiest (hunter) day pre-BC was when I got to tame the Sewer Beast in SW =). I got a lot of comments on that one!
And yes! More pet family-specific abilities! And more stable slots!
Glacius is rotting in my stable right now. The white ape from Un’Goro. Stabled him at 60 I believe. I don’t get along with his diet. A personal choice I suppose to never want to go out of my way to purchase food to feed him when I can easily fish up a week’s worth of meals for my crab. A shame though. I can’t bring myself to leave him entirely. I’d post a pic but I don’t believe that’s possible in the comments section.
My wife’s Belf hunter runs with a Dragonhawk. She got him when she hit level 10 and she’s used him up to 66. Others are usually surprised that he does so well (and she loves his fire breath cone-attack).
Admittedly, she also has a kitty for instancing with (to not break crowd control and to not get in people’s way when they’re trying to see), but Tails is her baby.
Being a mid 30’s hunter currently roaming around Stranglethorn, I have tamed a Gorilla, and liked it. The only thing I didn’t like is that thunderstomp has a 1 min cooldown on it, making it a every-other fight kind of thing.
At lvl 10 my Dwarf Hunter made the long & dangerous journey to get himself a Durotar Tiger. They’re rarely seen on an Alliance Hunter pre-30.
My Main Pet now is a lvl 70 Rotting Agam’ar from RFK. Sort of like my Tiger, really. You almost never see them on a Hunter in the Outland.
Re: more stable slots. I have a horrible feeling Blizzard are saving that for WOTLK.
I’m a boar man, myself. They’re not the prettiest, but dang if they aren’t tough as tanks. I can’t pull a mob off Petroc if I try, unless there is a significant difference in level between me an the mob (4-5 levels or so), and I’m giving it all the ranged DPS I can. I occasionally group with a MM hunter friend that uses a cat, and my BM/boar combo makes my pet over twice as survivable. It’s hard for me to conceive of using much else. (Although, I do have a soft spot for wolves… I went from 1-50 with my buddy, Hawken, a winter wolf from Dun Morogh.)
I run with Charlie aka king bangalash tamed him as soon as i could at 43 i think because of the cobra reflexes ability, now we can get it for all pets via pettrainer but i still keep old charlie can´t seem to find any pet as good, although i´ve tried every pet avalible exept for a boar wich now seems almost impossible i´m just to lazy to even level one from 60 to 70 damn i want to try out a boar make hellboars tameable blizz!!!!
“You know what else you don’t see? Sporebat pets. Why? Because they’re ugly.”
Lol-yeah, that’s it!
Nothing to do with them having no learnable skills whatsoever, nope.
Hey, just like the new mini sporebat vanity pet!
I’ve had Uhk’loc since level 53 and he has been renamed Knothead and is now level 70. He is the all-in-one utility pet for everything I do. Do I turn off Thunderstomp in raids? Yes I do. Do I turn it on when taking guildies through lower level dungeons? Yes I do. Do I get a lot of comments about Knothead and Bananas running side by side through any place we happen to be at the time? You betcha. I love my ‘rilla. I am waiting on a new skin (raptors got a badass skin, why not ‘rillas?) and perhaps another ability like charge, dash, or even “bound” so he can get into head-bashing range quickly. Someone suggested giving them a ranged attack like snakes called “Throw poo”… Yeah, that’s the same thing I thought. I even got my roomate to tame U’cha and he abandoned his carrion bird shortly after (he wanted an area attack for the soloability factor, which, in my no-name opinion, gorillas are the number one best solo pet out there).
Along with my tank, Knothead, I have Sian-Rotam which I named Knottail and my newly acquired Grunter which I named Knothide. He is level 51 and coming along nicely, but I don’t know how long he will last… Knothead is my claim to fame if there was such a thing. How many level 70 folks do you see running around with a fully levled and trained gorilla…?
Gorillas need some love…
Yes but…
Let’s face it, we’re in raids to deal damage. Maybe not only but it’s still a good part of the job. Gorillas in my opinion still need one more attack in order to actually become an alternative to cats and ravagers.
For coolness factor, I’m levelling an Ashenvale wolf with the rotten skin look. Hard to beat that in coolness (who said psycho?) but I know that it needs work from the part of Blizzard before I take him to visit our new and wonderful Zul’Aman friends.
i go for the highest dps pet for functionality … ever since the snarler pet nerf back in the day, a pet is a pet.
@BRK
funny reference to the southpark wow episode and to the alien probe episode …. btw, cartman wasn’t the hunter. but funny none the less .
To Capn John:
You aint kidding about the skin on the Rotting Agam’mar being cool! My lvl 28 Orc just went in and tamed one to use in the battlegrounds now that he is on the top of the bracket. It took 4 lesser invis potions and a lot of taming and dismissing to get in position to tame him.
I wanted Patches just for pvp (I love charge and gore), but now I see how cool the graphic is and don’t know how I can abandon him to learn new abilities, or my black lion, or my ghost kitty….
As for my main I’d like to have One cool beast from Outlands, Azeroth, and Northrend. It’s gonna be a tough choice who gets let go….
We need more slots!!
Vik & Wash, Kaylee, and Malcolm
My Hunter Thorgierr on Durotan Grabbed a Broken Tooth and named him “BrojaTonn” which is Old Norse for You guessed it, Broken Tooth. I picked him up back in the days when he was the best pet in the game, I had to camp him out for 3 days, checking in every hour to pick up the spawn. I still have him, but recently went back and picked up a Ghost Saber to set up as my PVP cat. I did this at level 66 mind you and took me 2 levels of grinding to get Casper up to level 52. Now that I’m 70 and BT is 69, I’m going to go back and level up Casper and eventually dump BT so I can pick up something different. I like others hope they increase the Stable count for us hunters. Hell, even make it a per 20 lvls requirement (meaning 4 at level 80 for WotLK). If it happens I’ll keep BT and have some openings for new pets that will likely come. I’d assume there will be Bears, Wolves and Cats up in Northrend, along with other exotics
