Success: The Feeling is Fine

BRK » 19 November 2007 » In Gear, Pets, Raids, WWS »

Zul’Aman, baby. We pwned it, big time. We tried it last week with 2 1/2 healers and it was no good. Stacked with three healers, The Squeekie Priestie, The Negative Druid, and our guild’s preeminent Holy Pally, we burned Nalarokk the Bear Boss down on the first shot.

Where to next? Halazzi the Lynx Boss, why not. Technically he’s the third boss but when you’re drunk on success from dropping the first boss, sometimes you get a little silly and skip stuff.

You know what’s fabulous about the Lynx guy? He’s a hunter’s dream; we get to break out new targeting macros and Misdirection and - believe it or not - Tranquilizing Shot! We’ll go into more detail of the hunter’s role in this fight in a new post, coming your way soon.

Since there is little magic-damage with which to contend thus far in ZA, we skipped training that stuff and grabbed Bite 9 as well as Claw 9. Here’s the WWS report for the Halazzi kill for us:

Note: Don’t sweat the low-DPS and the almost complete lack of Steady Shots. Our role against this boss is not max-DPS but is aggro-management, de-Frenzying, and totem-destruction. As we said earlier, we’ll delve into this fight in detail for you soon.

Anywho, Bite is not that impressive, is it. Claw did 300% more damage than Bite in this fight, and when we looked at the total instance damage report, Bite still stunk up the joint when compared to Claw. If you need resistances, don’t feel bad about dropping Bite in a heartbeat.

Hunter-loot? Yes, actually, Rage.

Rage
Binds when picked up
Main Hand Fist Weapon
174 - 323 Damage Speed 2.60
(95.6 damage per second)
+20 Agility
+18 Stamina
Yellow Socket
Socket Bonus: +4 Attack Power
Durability 75 / 75
Requires Level 70
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 13

But we didn’t go for it because our good friend Doomilias got the Internet wet with his rogue-drool for the thing.

We believe that the cache that drops this item is only supposed to open once the timed event is successfully accomplished, but we wiped five times before we got Halazzi down. Perhaps this was bugged?

Whatever. We rocked the house.

    Congrats!

But, what boss mod(s) were you using? We tried DBM 3.01 (haven’t tried 3.02 yet) and the warning for using Tranq seemed off (other hunter had Tranq duty and said she kept getting nothing to dispel). Thanks!

Bigwigs seems to have the timers right for ZA, although it’s not 100% on.

I’m surprised you say there’s little magic damage so far (although definitely the case with Nalorakk) considering that damn totem on the Lynx boss. He and the Eagle boss have a lot of nature damage so it was very nice to have 2 hunters both running Gift of the Wild (and I actually used some nature resist potions for once!)

  3. Fiordhraoi on November 19th, 2007 5:31 pm

    @Athryn -

The totems actually weren’t a problem for us, at least, not once we all threw a macro in to target them. They’d get, at most, one blast off and then be utterly annihilated.

The shocks are brutal though. It’s like he’s doing a maiden-type holy fire, but meaner.

    Grats dude ….

we are setting up to go for the timed event tonight as one of our groups cleared the place on Sat. Gonna be tight.

question? Does the 20 min timer mean you have to just pull the boss in question or kill him in the alloted time?
    Anyone know?

With the new show-all-buffs-on-target interface I can now see when colossi or murloc warriors in SSC frenzy and Tranq Shot to the rescue. It makes us happy yes. I am looking forward to using it on the Lynx boss, but it looks like we won’t be in ZA until week after next — most of our raiders inexplicably insisting they have to go to that Real World place this week to eat turkey or some such rot. BRK,

My thoughts on the Claw/Bite issue:

Of course claw will do significantly more damage when trained WITH bite. It’s a focus dump. Anytime he gets 25 focus–BAM!–Claw goes off. Now, if he picks up a bit of regen, you crit, and he has more than 35 focus, he’ll use bite…but with its cooldown, of course it can’t be spammed, and he’ll use claw to finish off whatever focus he has. May I suggest, merely for testing purposes, to REPLACE claw with bite for a fight. Either untrain it altogether, or just take it off auto-cast. Then, with him using only Bite every time he can, compare the damage?

The hunter shoulders off the bear boss are pretty cool too. It took me a few moments to realize they were bear heads. :)

  8. Irwin on November 19th, 2007 6:42 pm

For the timed quest in ZA, you need to kill the boss before the timer expires. We almost had Bear down within the 20 mins, if we hadn’t wiped on the group of 4 right before him.

    Grats!

Also, found a couple minor typos, in case you feel like fixing them! :)

    “the hunter’s roll” - Obviously you meant “role”;

“Anywho” - Is that a real word? :)

Also, what’s the deal with thott links if you don’t use the “Powered by Thott” script line? :)

@Brady: feel free to check my very old and mostly incomplete theoretical pet dps spreadsheet for a theoretical comparison of bite and claw. I have some adjustments to do, but I found it reasonably accurate from my early tests… You can find it on my blog, on the left, the one labeled “Pet Abilities DPS Calculator (zipped download)” right at the top.

    @someone

Sure thing. I have sworn by Claw since day one, and while I would bet my life’s saving’s that in a controlled experiment, Claw would always come out on top, it’d be cool to see some numbers. And really, the only reason I even suggested doing it like I said is because BRK decided to bring it up at all. It’s obvious that claw will outperform bite when used in conjunction, but if a true test were to be done, you’d need to use the one without the other. But, I’m sure BRK knows this already. :)

    gratz!

we have most kara on farm finally, but are still getting geared and couldn’t get the first boss down with 2 healers

  12. Shutter on November 19th, 2007 7:35 pm

Lies, that fist is shaman loot!

    Ahem…Sorry.

We got a first full clear on Saturday, it’s a fun little instance from what I’ve seen (haven’t gotten in for dragonhawk yet). Zul’jin is a pretty fun fight (though phase 3 can suck for some group makeups). Got to steal Berserker’s Call from two of our hunters, but one of them got to salv his feeling with the bow, so it all kind of works out (the other is packing Al’ar’s gun so…).

Kind of nice finding some of the alternative ways of doing some pulls (i.e. tanking/interrupting flamecasters instead of cc’ing). Makes me optimistic that you can run the instance with a lot of different balances. And going for the timed event will make it nice and snappy too. We’ve managed to get Bear and Eagle down in time so far, but losing all the ranged DPS on Eagle meant we just squeeked through and had no chance to make it for Lynx.

  13. 2ndworst on November 19th, 2007 7:41 pm

thx irwin, thats good to know …

i just did some research (on a forum that shall remain nameless), on the timed event and found out the most efficient order is eagle first, then bear, then dragonhawk and then lynx.

here’s another interesting tidbit … 4th Chest is a 100% Drop rate on the Bear Mount, apparently there’s 3 different colours as well. Chest contents depends on the kill order so if you kill the bear boss 4th it’ll drop the bear mount in that chest etc. ….
rumor mill or truth? would be interesting to find out.

Oh you new fangled hunters and your trainable Tranq Shot. Back in my day we had to walk through lakes of magma and endless molten giants to get our Tranq Shot and roll against other hunters.

Now you have your fancy trainers and don’t have to endure the endless tedium that is Molten Core!

Now get off my lawn before I turns the hose on ya!

  15. Shutter on November 19th, 2007 9:18 pm

    @2ndworst

I’m pretty sure you don’t have a choice as to which order to do them for the timed event, the one who’s shouting at you is the one who you need to kill to prevent the sacrifice. So the kill order is always Bear -> Eagle -> Lynx -> Dragonhawk if you’re trying to do the event.

  16. BRK on November 19th, 2007 10:48 pm

AHEM. We got our Tranq shot from MC, thank you very much. We also purchased our Multi Shot V book from the AH for a totally insane 125 gold way back before we could get in AQ.

    /harumph

Anywho, the “roll” was fixed, thank you. “Anywho” stays as we think of it as a more relaxed “Anyway”.

And we did a pure Bite/Claw writeup some time ago. Where’d we put that?

But the point of our missive here was to say to emphasize the Claw+Bite isn’t worth the talent points.

  17. Elistana on November 19th, 2007 10:57 pm

LOL at the drooling rogue… at least a good guy got it!

BTW, Awesome job doing ZA!!! Quite impressive.

  18. Gorgor & SpiderPig on November 20th, 2007 7:33 am

BRK are your WowWebStats not parsing Zul’Aman correctly? Mine are just a big total (no boss splits).

  19. BRK on November 20th, 2007 11:41 am

No, WWS is not ZA-friendly. Ya gots ta manually split it.

    Eagle Boss down! 3-6!

  20. Graypanther on November 20th, 2007 1:04 pm

Ok what strat did you all use on the Group of Four before the bear boss. They seem to much harder then the boss.

    P.S.
I have the bear heads :)

  21. Gorgor & SpiderPig on November 20th, 2007 1:53 pm

    graypanther:

We had a less than ideal makeup, but had our MT and OT take the mounted bear guys up on the ramps left and right to maintain distance.

Then our warlock feared the right most shaman guy, and our DPS warrior played tank while we burned the left shaman guy. Burn order was left most shaman guy, right most, then the OT’s target then MT’s target.

  22. pelides on November 20th, 2007 5:07 pm

    @BRK

heh, the trainable Tranq Shot jab wasn’t really aimed at you.

    /target BRK
    /cast tranquilizing shot

    All better.

Was meant for all the new hunters out there who have no idea who the Hydraxian Waterlords are. (Bit of a running joke in our guild right now) If you are revered or higher with them… you know the pain.

  23. Pat on November 21st, 2007 4:15 am

    Graypanther …

That 4-pack before the bear boss is the biggest pain. The trolls mounted on the bear have a debuff that increases damage by some insane amount, and it stacks.

You MUST serperate those two mounted troll/bear things (Warbringers?) and keep them apart. CC the two trolls. The trolls are random combination of medicine man and axe thrower. Can be 1 and 1 or 2 of either. If you have a priest, MC one of the medicine men. You don’t get their totem, but you get their chain heal and lightning bolt.
