Hunter-Lovin’ and It Feels So Good
“Dear BRK, just moments ago I finished a heroic Mechanar run with my new guild and promptly received this strange ‘pst’ from the tanking warrior of the group:
‘You my friend, are the best damn hunter I’ve seen in a LONG time.’
“Elation and a rapid flush of the skin soon brought me to my senses as whatever sort of self-gratification and personal feelings of awesomeness were replaced by the big caveat that it was not in fact my own skills and mannerisms as a hunter that this particular tank seemed to praise, but those instilled from a certain BRK.
“Massive-sustained DPS, quickly executed and fore-thoughtfully timed traps (read those damn mobs on the bridge to the last boss), passing on an o-so-needed Primal Nether (I want my ebon netherscale set!) in the end to help the grateful holy paladin, offering to tip the tank … and many more hunterisms were displayed in an ode to the dashing [BRK].
“I’ve not been a part of the WoW community for too long, but for my time spent I’ve enjoyed reading your witty, thought-provoking, and honest-to-God helpful blogs. They’ve helped me tremendously and I just figured you could use some stoking of the “Id”. Grimboch”
As most of our guildies will tell you, our psyche is very strong. Warped, deranged, and fantastically out-of-control, but strong. Publishing this letter isn’t about us, but you.
How in the bloody, bleepin’ BRK-universe did Not Screwing Up And Just Being Nice become the mark of being A Good Hunter? Isn’t that just a screaming, horrific shame?
Don’t get us wrong; we’re thrilled that Grimboch got accolades and felt great and his party inflicted destruction upon those who deserved it. We love to hear he tempered his loot-cravings for the benefit of someone else, and tipped that hard-working tank. But you know what comment we REALLY want to hear some tanks and healers start to say?
“Dude. There’s been a real improvement in the vast number of hunters I’ve partied with and you’re no exception. Good job, thank you.”
Are you doing your part to make our dream come true?

@BRK
My eyes are bleeding from the green and I think my retinas have detached.
@Grimboch
GJ. I have told many a hunter to come here and get a clue. Now if only we can get people to atleast be civil once in a while this game could really make history.
“Don’t forget if you get attacked by a moose, fiegn death. They fall for it everytime”
Ditto. The green is quite irritating and distracting.
It would be dream to have the Hunter community regarded in th same way as Grimboch. Sometimes the only way to change a stereotype is one person at a time. Thanks to all those working to get the good name of hunters back.
I don’t mind the green by itself, it’s the fact that it’s on a white background that makes it hard on the eyes.
BRK–
I received a similar comment last night while doing Mana Tombs: the healer, who I had never worked with before, told me “You are the best hunter I have partied with in a very long time.” It made me feel so good that I actually screenshotted it.
Also these days it’s rare that I don’t get complimented on my trapping when I’m in an instance, which I find kind of ironic because I feel like I’m just doing my job. But apparently a lot of hunters aren’t, so when hunters that can do their job show up, they seem out of the ordinary.
Anyways the point of this comment is not at all to show off or anything (although I’m admittedly still kind of high on the compliment; don’t we all love those?) the point is that, there are a lot of hunters that are improving and it’s because of BRK and the comments that are left in BRK, and the online hunter community in general. I’m sure there are a LOT of hunters out there who have been raised on BRK and it’s showing. There is always more work to be done
but, I think there are a lot of improving hunters out there and it’s largely due to BRK and the little community that has been fostered here.
And that is all coming from a girl (namely, me) who didn’t start playing WoW until earlier this year and rolled a hunter as her first character with absolutely no idea what she was doing. I did Deadmines with my pet on aggressive and I was throwing down immolation traps when people told me to trap things; I was THE definition of huntard. But today I can be in charge of CC in an instance and still top the DPS meters, I get compliments and am specifically asked by people to group with them. What caused that change? BRK did. And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Anyways, sorry that turned into a novel, but I guess I wanted you to know that you are really doing a huge service to hunters everywhere, maybe more than you realize. =)
I cannot count how many aspiring hunters I have sent to your blog, BRK. This is a daily ritual for me and I find myself thumbing through old posts (including ones I’ve read a hundred times before) for that next piece of information that would help set me apart as a player.
Like a few of the others, I’ve received some compliments but I don’t like it. I’ve received a lot of harassment for my choice in class as well and I don’t like that either.
So imagine my surprise when a guildie (who rolled a hunter and will quickly be in Outlands) asked for advice and I pointed her here. “Oh, I love BRK.” She’s still got a ways to go, but who doesn’t? Even so, she’s chain- trapping and being just a kind person like a champ.
I may never hear it and you might not either, but because of this blog (and a few others), I feel the community, as least on my servers, is improving. The sheer number of hunters absorbs a lot of the well- played and well- intentioned of us before most actually see a positive change in the hunter community.
So yes, I think I am doing my part. Especially when the healer at the end of an instance tells me she’s going to roll a hunter and wants me to teach her how to trap like that. Guess where I send her?
That’s for the green-feedback, we’ve made it darker. Better?
Much better, thanks. The light green on white was making my eyes bleed.
G’day BRK,
Long time reader, first time poster.
I’ve just swung by to say thanks for all your tips, hints and insight. Up until the other week I’ve been a very casual player, having only just made it to the outlands after many months of grinding.
Since reading your blog I’ve promised myself to never fall into the trap (no pun intended) of being a “huntard” and well, so far so good. I think…
So just once again, a big thanks from down under and I look forward to some more of your work =)
Ghetts.
I agree with most others here, keep up the good work BRK. Im the hunter officer for my guild and I send all the hunters your way. You make my job real easy =)
/pat BRK on back
Hi BRK!
I’ve been reading your blog ever since a well-informed Warlock in my guild told me about it, great work! I noticed that my key hunter resource forums weren’t mentioned anywhere on your site and I wanted to suggest them to you in case you hadn’t heard of them. We’d love to have your input there! TKASomething:

They have been invaluable to me. I was also surprised that Elitist Jerks isn’t linked on your research sites. As “elitist” as they may be, their theorycrafting resources are extensive. [The infamous and INCREDIBLE "Cheeky's Spreadsheet" is linked on both of those boards]
It’s always a pleasure reading!

I practice my chain-trapping solo in the SM Cath, where a mistake leads to a quick death, simply because BRK has driven me to be a better hunter, not a huntard slugging n00Bjuice.
I got a similar comment by running a group of 40/41’s through the Armory, passed on all loot and chests, just wanted a crack at a tabard. All 3 were repeatedly pulled out of the fire by my fire or my pet.
Now- if I could only teach them NOT to break my traps…
BRK! I read your post on your old site and almost had a heart attack. Who would I have to bicker with! Thankfuly you’re still here.
Congrats on the new site!
although I do not dig the green I dig the continued BRKness. I may be re-expanding my time to do a bit of pve again (doing all these heroics for my dorys has me thinkin) and I’m sure it till be time for us to harass one another again soon!
I recently got similar comments from several groups.
In fact, one guy asked me if I could train all the hunters in his group.
This was after he was shocked that after my first trap timed out that I was far enough away to have another ready to pick him up, no tank assistance required.
I like the new site!
It is unfortunate that today’s mark of a good hunter is “Not Screwing Up….” That is definitely not the level of skill to be proud to be measured against. Let’s hope that someday soon, through the molding of young and old hunters alike, the mark of a Good Hunter will be ’splitting the arrow’ – not showing up and doing our job.
As we are not there yet, great job Grimboch! Your success is one of the building stones to a better Hunterdom future.
Short story about this weekend and my first trip to Kara.
Recently joined a casual raiding guild from a purely pvp guild. I’m geared with 50% pvp/arena gear mixed with some 5 man goodies like the CoT legs and BM chest. Still using valanos bow even. Needless to say I scheduled my first trip to Kara and ended up with 2 other hunters, both kara geared. One BM, one MM. Up to Attumen I was hesitant to really cut loose so I was 4th behind the other hunters and a rogue in purples although recount was showing my dps higher than all the others. This was telling me I was waiting too long to engage so I started getting a little more bold. The other BM hunter commented to me that I was doing a great job for my first time in Kara and I mentioned that I do a lot of reading at BRK. He was not familiar with the site and told me that he didn’t need to read about “his” class and would figure talents/shot rotations out on his own. Needless to say, by the end of the night I was on top by a significant margin. Hopefully this has sent him your way for a little education. First time in Kara and topping the meters with inferior gear. Can’t wait until next week…
I send all the hun-ters and -tards in my guild here. I don’t care if they are specc’d BM/MM/SV, read the side bar about how to do things. Go to the sites. Learn, people, learn.
Saturday night, I get the call to help two guildies in a PuG of UB. I am grouped with another hunter who has no pet. “?” I never thought I’d use it but a quick check of their talents shows a MM hunter. Still, where’s the pet? Hunter disses my pet and says her cat “doesn’t do instances, only PVP”?
She takes over marking, giving me spell casters. Wha? Then, when the caster she’s assigned me to trap can’t be pulled into my trap because, well, there’s a wall at the end of the hallway and I can’t get out of range, she is all over my case because I’m not using “silencing shot”. I said, “Check my talents.” “What do you mean?” “I’m BM.” I was already ahead of her on dps and, after this, went out of my way to finish any mob assigned to me.
Chain trapping, check. Massive dps, check. Beastial Wrath, check. “OMG what is wrong with your pet!” I just snicker at the computer screen as she vainly tried justifying her inability to keep her mob trapped with the fact that she can do 3K crits with Aimed shot. When she started breaking my traps, the tank said he had to go. Before he left, he sends me a tell, “Sorry we had a ‘tard with us. Leave the group and get a beer. She doesn’t deserve to run with you.”
Last night, I helped a guildie in Scholo. Weirdest Scholo run ever. 59 pally, 64 mage, 67 lock and me, a 70, with Ursa tanking. We aggro’d stuff that shouldn’t have aggro’d. Ursa went through the wall in the first hallway and I couldn’t get him out so we had to restart. At the end of a long run, and we were only doing 3 quests, the lock says, “You’re the best hunter I’ve ever seen. Even when pulls went badly, you knew exactly what to do. I’m going to remember you.”
I know my job and I know how to do it. I know how to recover if I botch it or if someone else botches it. I go into every instance/group encounter with an eye toward learning or improving.
And always, always I remember what I learned here. I actually don’t mind not topping the damage meter. If I am doing my job flawlessly, the group will remember the perfect run, not that I stood out above the rest.
Oh, did Zuluhed the Whacked yesterday. First time, wipe. Second time, massive amounts of sustained dps FTW! The 3 non-guildes went back to their guilds and waxed poetic because I had three more requests for help within 90 minutes of killing the guy.
It’s perfect weather in Chicagoland for WOW so it’s off to BEM and work on chain trapping and LOS pulls on ogres.

Not yet, I admit. But reading this blog is my first step there.
