It’s All About Planning

weeklycalendar.jpgMany people write and ask us about our schedule. They want to know how we keep a family, work, a blog, and WoW going all at the same time. OK, let’s talk a bit about that.

In the morning, we’ll check the BRK Email Dumpster, find some cool things, and forward them to work. Maybe we’ll make a quick post on the blog, like the WoWJutsu post, if it’s short and quick.

At work, we’ll work on a potential post in our head, maybe write a few notes, and send them home for when we get off work. We talk to our friends and get story ideas and perspectives about the toons they play.

At night, we pick up the boy from school, get home, make him dinner, and start answering BRK email and write a post to be published then or perhaps the next day. Honestly, this could take two hours if we let it; our inbox is perpetually full. We try to limit email-answering to 30 minutes per night and spend some time with the boy. However, if he’s deeply engrossed with Bambi or his trains, we’ll answer more email or write up a few BRK-posts and schedule them for future publications.

Posts are very dependent on the kind of email questions we get and our current feelings about the game. For example, the demand for a WoWWebStats post were loud and frequent, but getting all the screenshots and data done took a few days to put together. We’ll work on multiple posts at the same time, some taking a few minutes, others as long as a week to complete.

When the boy goes to bed, we are free to play! Here’s our weekly schedule:

  • Monday– AC’s short 25-person raid, usually Gruul’s Lair. Hopefully, our guild we soon announce that everybody has gotten enough T4 legs and shoulders so we can move on to Maggy full-time. We don’t need our T4 chest – the Ebon leatherworking gear is just fine – but everybody else probably does.
  • Tuesday – Not much if anything, we try to take off and spend movie-night with Mrs. BRK. /cuddle mode on
  • Wednesday– AC’s long 25-person raid, SSC. Lurker is on farm now, but his loot-table is kinda sad We are starting the move to Hydros as of January.
  • Thursday – Blow through Kara for Badges of Justice, but we’re almost done with this. We want two more for our trinket and then this will become a free night for something else.
  • Friday– Zul’Aman, and all the ugly loot therein. Much screaming about the Dragonhawk boss on vent, so be sure to stay out of the raid channel unless you’re prepared.
  • Saturday– Nothing organzied at all, but daily quests for money and mats. We also usually plan to attempt to make a training movie or log off early and spend quality time with Mrs BRK. Also the 2nd night of screaming about the Dragonhawk boss and what a f-ing tool he is.
  • Sunday– Toss-up night, we keep it open. Could be a 2nd night of SSC or ZA, could be more dailys, could be farming for mats. Off the computer by 10pm so we are ready for the next work week. Or more cuddling. /score!

We’ve been working on the new blog and forums after dinner and not answering as much email as we’d like. Hopefully the forums are getting more stable and people are experiencing fewer CPU-overuse errors. We know the picture problem has been solved with the default template, we just have to similiarly fix the others.

The blog… honestly, we’re mostly happy with it. The color scheme doesn’t make us drool, but it’s totally functional. As always, the banner is the key; it looks tremendous. We would love a 3-column theme, but this one is working and the thought of tweaking another – and the time required to do it – makes us shudder.

Oh, we have some other news, but we can’t share it with you yet.

The news you can’t tell us… have you been telling us you can’t tell us about it before? …does it rhyme with kublishing?

It does not rhyme with “kublishing”, nope. We won’t here about that subject until January.

Sooooo…….. I gotta ask as this is a topic I’ve been struggling with – balance between play and RL within a marriage to a spouse that doesn’t play.

As I count it that’s at least 5 nights playing, possibly a 6th if MBRK isn’t in cuddle mood. I know I’ve asked before, but that seems like a lot of nights spent in front of the computer and not next to MBRK. Is she cool with that?

I don’t mean to get too personal and every relationship is different buy my wife’s head would burst if I spend 5 nights out of the week playing WoW.

Not sure what I’m asking other than your continued thoughts on WoW/RL balance and how you get to play 6 nights a week without any visible scars.

Mrs BRK has her own blog and likes to do her own thing, too. Also, she’s short and has a hard time getting off the bed to accost us and curtail our WoWing.

I gotta say, in regards to BRK’s last comment here… does Mrs. BRK refer to BRK as “Mr. [Her Chosen Screenname]“?

  8. BRK on December 15th, 2007 3:30 pm

Mrs BRK never refers to BRK as Mister unless he’s in serious trouble, and then she does not append anything to the “Mister” but instead launches a full-scale red-headed verbal assault. The key is to not giggle.

    If one giggles… the horror.
