D E L E T E and Hit OK
We loathe alts. Hate hate hate hate hate. Odio a los alts! Ich mag alts nicht!
So we rolled an alt a few days ago. A Paladin. Did we mention that we hate alts?
We leveled to 19, Retribution. Female dwarf, ’cause we love dwarves and we’ve never created a female toon before. Double red ponytails, non-demonic.
We twinked the beejezus out of her because we’ve got about 5000g in the bank with nothing to do. We got her a Searing Blade from the Auction House and bought the mats for the +7 Damage enchant, thank you Kel. We haz light saber! Mail armor, self-heal, two-handed sword, she should do fine soloing, yes?
She’s terrible. She has to body pull everything, can’t stop a runner, has no insta-heals, and has mana-issues that would make a hunter cringe.
Now it could be that she’s too low-level to make such a harsh judgement. Or perhaps we just stink. Every time we got dropped off the bird-bus, we thought our mount-macro was broken. It took until level 18 before we were able to remember that we don’t have a mount.
But she’s not long for this world, that’s for sure. We’re going to roll another hunter.
Why? To make a BRK at Level Ten Hunter Guide Movie! Why we didn’t think of this before, no idea. But it sounds like fun.
More fun that that stupid Paladin, that’s for sure.

BRK - while I agree, most alts can be the death of you, I always try to stick it out. If I can get into the twink 29 bracket, I know I will see the full potentional a class has. I don’t think a lvl 19 paladin even compares to a lvl 29 paladin (whom are insane to beat in battlegrounds).
I recently started my now 38 warlock and stopped at 28-29 to pvp quite a bit. The most common class I saw fighting me? Paladin…and boy did they hate me…but I sure hated them as well. Lvl 29 paladin twinks are the devil.
So I hope someday you re-twink her to be leet in the 29 bracket.
As for now, I look forward to your 1-10 lvl’ing guide movie. I’ve never made one - probably could…but probably never will.
btw if you already deleted her - instead of redoing those 19 lvls you can request she be un-deleted…unless you’ve already done this for another character (I think they only do 1 free recover)…not entirely sure on that one. i had to restore my rogue after my ex got angry once…yeah see who got angrier after that happened…

I’m right there with you on the pally alt I started a few weeks ago as well. The upper teens and lower 20’s were horrendous for the reasons you’re calling out. However, I found that when you get to the upper 20’s low 30’s it really starts to pick up. Now my whole purpose for the pally is a tankadin, so around mid 30’s Full Prot AoE grinding knocks our socks as you may say. It’s a lot of fun to me once you start to get some quality abilities that is. You should try to stick it out for the next 10-15 levels and then decide whether you can make it or not. It’s obviously a world apart from my BM MQoSRDPS Machine, but I like the idea of the AoE tanking thing. It just looks cool with those numbers flying all over the screen and every mob in range clobbering on me.
Sonvar on 28 Dec 2007 at 10:24 am #
I’ve never played a pally so I can’t really say much about that. I do like playing alts every now and then. The only other characters I have that are beyond level 40 though is a druid and shaman. I really like them as I can solo well and heal myself afterwards. Though admittedly I have to watch my mana with the Shaman cause I can easily deplete my mana pool if I don’t watch what I’m doing. As a druid though since the mana regens while I’m a bear or cat I usually have mana to heal myself after most fights. Currently since I’m Alliance on a PvP server I’ve been working on leveling my Blueberry Shammy. It’s been pretty fun.
Personally as far as races go I like playing a Tauren or Draenei. Not sure exactly what it is but I feel something is missing if I play any other races.

Hey BRK, long time reader… I have a fun suggestion. I’ve been playing a multitude of hunters since November 04. I keep telling myself I want to try out that other pet class, but I’ve never gotten around to it… since I’m lazy, and you’re obviously not, you should make a Warlock and write some fancy stuff about comparisons to the hunter and whatnot.
I’d enjoy it anyway.
Flaime on 28 Dec 2007 at 10:29 am #
I like alts. Since I can’t find a decent guild (ie, a casual raiding guild that can consistently meet, and will do other things when we aren’t raiding), I tend to level alts. I like the feeling of accomplishment that I have when I get another alt to max level (have 2 70s, will have 3 in a couple of weeks, and 4 shortly thereafter).
But yes, Pallies have to body pull for most of their career. You can get a “range” pull in the mid 40s if you go holy, or at 50, if you go prot. and holy is a terrible leveling spec. In fact, until about 35, prot isn’t that great.

Red pigtails are FTW, no? My happy little huntress has those. I love how they fly up when casting.

twinks are those bastards that killed my interest in BGs when I rolled my first toon ( a hunter, pre 2.3, deadzone…), actually they made me doubt that I’ll ever be +/- good at this game, and they might be the reason why there are so many “noob” 70ties in BGs alltogether, so think again before “having fun” in BGs against ppl that just rolled their first toon, have little idea how pvp works and are trying to complete BG quests for the first time, I personally abandoned them them after meeting couple unkillable hordes in AB, completed them only when got to 70ty and had nothing better to do atm
in fact, it should be made that toons get not only honor, but some xp too, so those twinks couldn’t stay at 19, 29 etc forever
level up and compete against more or less even characters at 70ty

I love alts: I’m an assumed altaholic!
As for “can’t stop a runner”, did you try using Hammer of Justice? Has a 1 min CD, but works fine. But the REAL way to stop a runner is to finish him off. If you’re talking about PvE runners, they will do so when at low health and Judging a Seal of Righteousness will do instant damage to the runner and usually enough to finish him off.
As for body pulls, yep, that’s why I tried some palies before and they got the delete button!
My current paly is mid-20 and hasn’t been deleted yet because I named it after my daughter! So, someday, I’ll pick it up and level it a bit more! Kind of curious about that AoE grinding mid-30ies…
As for no instant heal: you’re playing a Bubbledin! Bubble up, heal, heal. At your level, you already have 2 bubbles (Blessing of Protection and Divine Protection) which only share a 45 sec debuff, so you can bubble yourself twice every 5 mins. And you can even use a bandage (skill up 1st aid to the max and have your main send over some higher bandages): just refrain from using a macro to buble+bandage as, due to lag, it sometimes fails! You bubble up, the bandage starts, you get hit, you get the debuff and the bandage stops. Yep, you shouldn’t be getting hit after bubbling, but that’s the way lag works! So, just keep the bubble buttons ready and be ready to bandage after the GCD: using a much higher level bandage will heal you up full within the time of the bubble…
And if you get into a HUGE trouble, and bubbles are still up, don’t forget about Blessing of Freedom to prevent snares/stuns/dazes for 10 sec and, while you run away, throw in a Lay on Hands if needed.
Palas suck due mainly to no ranged attacks and body-pulling, especially when you’re used to the very OPPOSITE class that usually strikes from a distance and rarely gets in melee range, but they’re though to get down if you use their abilities right… Even more so if you twink them!
Zahana on 28 Dec 2007 at 10:58 am #
All of my alts are bank characters, with the exception of a gnome that I created specifically to make those fishing lures.
As far as the 19 twinks, in WSG I hated the following in order.
19 NE Hunter (just one, but I hated her so much), BE pallies, and Rogues.

/cast Empathy
I am horrible about rolling alts, and they NEVER get past 20…
I see something shiney and think it would be nice to play, but they never are…
The Female Gnome Warrior…
The Bald Human Rogue…
The White-Bearded Dwarf Priest…
A Druid…
A Mage…
…and many more, all rolled, time and cash spent, all deleted…
BaldBilly on 28 Dec 2007 at 11:07 am #
I rolled a pally couple of weeks ago, got him to 26 last night. I’m having a blast with him, ret spec and tough as nails. Granted not being able to sic my pig onto a mob is a bit different and the fact that he can’t use any range, AT ALL, is a bit of an issue, still over all he is a blast to play. At 20 you can start a quest for a very nice blue 2H mace, very cool at his lvl.

While my primary is a hunter, my pali is one of my favorite alts. At L18 and without twinking she entered Duskwood and began laying waste to the undead. When she learned Exorcism at L20 she blew her way through L24 skeletons at Raven Hill. I thought her ridiculously over powered. With a bubble/bandage macro she is nearly indestructible. At L40 she was putting out bigger crits than my L50 hunter. My L26 BElf has been every bit as powerful.
At a little higher level you will get a spell that is the next best thing to Curse of Recklessness. I have used it extensively in running Horde and Alliance dungeons and haven’t lost a runner yet. Give your dwarfette a chance. The best is yet to come.
Ahoni on 28 Dec 2007 at 11:41 am #
I’m an altaholic.
70 undead warlock (main)
70 tauren hunter (used to be main)
70 tauren feral druid RAWR!!
45 undead mage
32 tauren shaman
23 belfadin
20 orc rogue
20 undead warrior
15 troll priest
I reallly feel you don’t get to know what a class can do until you get into the mid 20s. So many class defining abilities don’t come till after 22. Rogues don’t get distract and vanish till 22. Shammies don’t get windfury till around 30. Druids don’t get kitty till 20, and its around 30 they really start cooking. Hunter’s don’t get Feign Death till 30!!!! (and !!!!)
Don’t give up on a class till at least 25 or so. Pallies are slow levelers, and don’t have anywhere near the dmg output a hunter does, plus there is the whole being in melee range thing. Give em another chance. You don’t have to love em, but sometimes playing the other class gives you clues on how to pwn them.
Pike on 28 Dec 2007 at 11:52 am #
BRK’s like me, anytime I roll an alt I give up after a while and roll another hunter.
Though I do realize, as Ahoni said, that you really can’t judge a class in the first 10 or 20 levels… so my new goal is to get one of every class to at least level 20. Even if it pains my little huntery heart to do so. I do want to get a better understanding of other classes.

Alts are ok… I just get annoyed playing them… however guild drama has made my lose interest in my 70 hunter.
About the twinks… a pally is not a 19 twink class, if you want pure pwnage go with a 19 hunter, a rogue is next in line, mages hurt but take a lot of work to make, and a good priest is amazing!
If you want your pally to rock take her to 39 and give it a shot there. Paladins can make some hard targets and that bubble and heals will give you an edge over most opponents.
Hands down though a twinked Marks hunter at 19, 29, and 39 is the hardest hitting class that I have come across.
Just be warned, when you go to a low level toon thats the same class as your main you’re gonna be looking for skills you wont have a for a few levels in the heat of the moment, but that just makes it amusing.

Tanhorechi on 28 Dec 2007 at 12:08 pm #
Just another hint. While you may not have it yet (it’s been awhile since my pally was that low level), judging Seal of Justice prevents the mob from running. Much better than Hammer of LoL…I mean Hammer of I win, …I mean Hammer of Justice.
Of course, if you switch to an AoE prot build, runners are useful in many circumstances. Unless they bring casters or other ranged that is.

@ BRK
Thanks for the kind words to my post the other day.
While you probably know this and are just using the, “She has to body pull everything,” for dramatic effect, a Pally does have a ranged attack…. EZ Dynamite (engineer-made, usable by anyone).

My druid has been at level 11 for about two months now. I had been telling myself that once the changes to the leveling came out I would buckle down and run him up to at least 30 to see if I liked him. And I will do this, I will….sometime.

Just last night one of my friends said that “Paladins get better with age…errr level.” He’s finally into the upper 40’s and really enjoying that alt. But I agree that one you have a hunter it’s almost impossible to enjoy any other character. Personal tank…mail armor…feign death. It’s a very nice package.

It’s true, once you try hunter, you never go back. My main was a tauren shaman until I switched sides and leveled the hunter. Now the other alts are boring or frustrating to play. Hunters are just *fun* to play or level.
By the way, I do use a shot macro. It does increase my dps by helping to remove lag issues, but more importantly it greatly enhances my enjoyment of the game. I’m free to look around at the battles more instead of looking for my keys, and I’m much more situationally aware - which helps with kiting, CC, and protecting the healers. You should do a little piece on dropping freezing trap on the healers toes for when they pull aggro off groups.

Mt first toon was a Female Draenei Healadin. In the mid 20’s, I rolled a Hunter and was consumed by it’s abilities. I never went back to Alleris until my Hunter reached 70. Now I pretty much only play my Hunter in hopes for instances. Alleris is now mounted and quite the healing machine. Why a female? Whose arse would you rather be staring at while you play for hours on end?

I rolled a paladin alt when my hunter main was around level 15. We have had a love and hate relationship. At first it was love, killing amani trolls like they were bunnies, hurtin the Scourge up and down the Dead Scar…
Then Hate… taking 2 days to get the troll necklaces in STV because I could only kill the ones on the outskirts of the ruins or pull them all at once.
Then Love when I found out about Tankadins and AOE grinding.
Now my pally is 61 and in Outlands, I have a holy priest questing partner and we pwn… but i can barely do anything by myself anymore.
So I rolled a new hunter on a different server, just before the tweaks to leveling in patch 2.3 WOW! amazing difference in play experience. I’m at 41 in approx 3 days /played and just 5-6 talent points from getting the gift of Big and Red for my kitty.

Rohan on 28 Dec 2007 at 4:38 pm #
How are you running out of mana as a paladin? Are you trying to Judge Righteousness/Command?
That’s generally not worthwhile. Just start with your initial judgement (Crusader, or Wisdom if you need mana), fire up Seal of Righteousness/Command and wait for the mob to die. Only Judge again if your Seal is about to run out.
It’s pretty boring, but it’s efficient. Heh, I levelled back when Judgement had a 15s cooldown, so you had to play this way.

Engineering helps with the body pulls. A band-aid solution, but it does help.
I have a lot of alts, and paladin was probably the toughest to level. At 35 you can start the full out aoe grind though, and that makes a big difference.

Dear BRK,
Thanks for the information on the blog and all the guides that you have assembled for this newbie to WoW. To be honest with you I hope you do re-make a Hunter and make a video for the lower levels. I am curious though if you would make another dwarf or if you would try a different race such as a Draenei or a Tauren? Once again thanks for putting together the site and keeping it going along with all your friends and tech-guru types

70 Tankadin, love it =D
I have a couple 20ish Hunter alts (one on the same server as my main, one on a Horde PvP server), but since no guild in the history of WoW has a lack of Hunters, I don’t feel terribly incented to level them up.
BTW, many people have mentioned engineering, and I will concur that it’s a great profession for a paladin. The epic goggles you can make (one for each spec) are fantastic.

This reminds me of my earlier days in WoW. I was teaming up with 2 more guys (one was a hunter lvl 17/18) , and it seemed these guys were on alts, and they just got to know the main identities (light bulb going on scene). And here is how the conversation went :
non hunter alt : isnt your main a hunter ?
hunter alt : umm.. yeah.
non hunter alt : what lvl ?
hunter alt : 60.
non hunter alt : so why are you lvling another hunter ?
hunter alt : umm. no idea. i just like hunters.
Currently going through game withdrawal symptoms. no internet connection to play wow at home, and firewalls at work. sigh!
