BRK Lowbie-Hunter Guide Movie
At a mind-numbing 14 minutes, YouTube thinks this “small” movie is too long so they won’t be hosting it; it’s all on bigredkitty.net!
Due to multiple requests to not embed the videos in the page, we’ve gone back to the YouTube model. Unfortunately this meant we had to split the movie into two parts and lose a little bit of content from the second movie. However, we are maintaining the two downloads as full versions, not in two parts.
You can download this small-version (17.5MB) here.
And the full-sized version (125MB) here.

Great video.
Makes me feel good that, while I did a little huntard-style stuff as a sub-10 hunter (axes ftw!) I did learn to use my boar properly, and he’s an absolute blast in the mid-twenties, with Boris the Boar tankin’ everything.
Thomas on 02 Jan 2008 at 5:31 pm #
Wow…I wish you had this guide a few months ago when I started my hunter. And I too was guilty of the huntard play for the 1st few levels in the teens, but SOON realized that my pet was there for a reason. If I could only keep my mana bar full now…

Any chance you could please not inbed the video on the page itself, but have a link to it? (to open in new window or whatever) The way you have it now sometimes makes my browser crash.
May not be a widespread issue (hell it may only be me) but if this is the way videos are put up in future, it’d probably put me off visiting the blog so often.

Awesome, Yet Again.
Glad to see you have some time again to entertain and educate.
Looking forward to watching the next iteration of your BRKTestBed education video. Along this same line, you should do a video where you show how you tame a new pet for additional pet skills, i.e. getting Gore or Claw or the next rank of said skill. It took me forever to figure that out.

Damn you for making me want to roll a new hunter instead of the rogue i was thinking about leveling. :@
Mania on 02 Jan 2008 at 7:50 pm #
Very nice! I’ve been waiting for this. :>
One small suggestion: When you are talking about pet pulling, you say to send the pet in and then “bring it back”. But you don’t mention how to bring your pet back to you. Since I was level 66 or so before I figured this one out, I think it might be useful to just mention quickly exactly how you can bring your pet back to your side.
Lady-Jess on 02 Jan 2008 at 9:03 pm #
Awesome:) I never did a pet pull until last night in sethh halls. Mob resisted trap #2 and went for the healer, I had 5 seconds til my next trap so over dashes Whispurr with growl and intimidate…traps up, call him back and poof ice cubed mob, happy healer, squeeing hunter, cat back on skull.

Another great BRK movie.
But I need to reiterate the request of one of the above posters. Having the movies load right in the page causes my internet explorer to crash. Just making them available for download would work great for me.
Thanks again BRK!
Felandra on 02 Jan 2008 at 11:24 pm #
Great! Just great!
I could have used this a long time ago when I prowled the shores of Eversong Woods (too bad there are no Boars there, so I have never actually tamed a single Boar).
There is however one small flaw, or complication or whatever you want to call it. The early kites. Generally the early enemies are very easy, if you don’t kill them outright on the way to you, they are very low on life when they get to you. So I found that shoot-Raptor was the fastests way to kill early on. As long as a single Raptor Strike was enough I used that, and it should even be better now that the deadzone is effectively gone.
Besides, when are you ever going to leanr the melee weaponskills? You can find yourself in loads of situations where it is vital that Wing Clip is a hit, and not a miss.
Of course that is generally later, but I found no actual need to kite like in the middle teens (remember no Boar, and no patience to wait for pet aggro :P).

Dwarfs and boars for the win!!!
Good movie. I am terrible at strafing and turning, I did NOT grow up with computers and games. I wish, as mentioned by someone else you would address this.
I have a 70 hunter that is doing BGs a lot, and I am pretty good, but I am held back by my inability to strafe very well.
Adlanniel on 03 Jan 2008 at 1:59 am #
Woot! This is great..
I’ve been frustrated by many a hunter in my day and am surprised at how many I come across that simply have no idea how to play their class(i.e. melee’ing and even one who refuses to own a pet at all!).. admittedly when I first started mine I didn’t quite know what I was doing either but I took the time to ‘learn’ and everything I learned made me love the class that much more.
I agree with an above comment too, about making something teaching hunters about the different abilities like claw, dash, etc.. The number of hunters I run into that ask me “how does your cat do that?” is somewhat scary. And maybe too, something about the role hunters play in groups.. This is a lot of where, I think, the whole ‘huntard’ thing comes into play. BM hunters can be wonderful healer savers!
Anywoot.. love the site and the guides, keep up the good work!

Hey BRK, here’s a free tip. You can upload the movie to stage6 and veoh (stage6 is DivX) without the 10 minute limit youtube has. Oh and, stage6 doesn’t have a filesize limit either.

I would in particular be interested in different views / ways of doing the jump shot and kiting. I am sure there are a number of ways to do this.
I have a particular issue that makes PvP particularly hard: somewhat carelessly I put down my left hand during the first Gulf War and rather stupidly forgot to pick it up again before the Medivac.
I have built a rocker on the ‘a’, ‘w’ and ‘d’ buttons that I can use the stump on but it is proving difficult to include the ‘q’ and ‘w’ keys in this. I have a detached ’space bar’ under my left elbow but this is a little cumbersome.
I am therefore a right handed mouseman and clicker mainly.
If anyone can offer some help with jump shot and kiting techniques that you think may help, let me know.
Cheers
Tisi

So awesome, Mr. BRK! Where the hell was this when I was a huntard (oh wait, I’m still a huntard according to some ). Great GREAT advice for a starting hunter. Thank you!

OMG. Brk is teh Man.
When you hopped to the huntard section.. that was me.. totally.. In fact.. I still do it and i’m 32. Its very frustrating to lvl like that lol. But my pet is 28 whereas i’m 32, and i’m twinked, so my shots seem to hit for ALOT.
Heres hoping you keep going with these videos. I know the kiting technique and use it whenever its needed.
Thx. Brk.

BRK - Great movie! I learned a ton from it. While I’m doing some of the right things (big thanks to the Omen tutorial which helped me in a huge way to monitor agro), there are some things which I just didn’t know how to do. Like having my pet attack each mob in turn when they’ve got more than one on them. I had big problems with pulling the others off my pet before the first one was down.
Oh, and the blue in that dress really brings out your eyes.
If I see hunters in dresses on my servers I’ll know where they got the idea.

Yet another great movie, BRK. As a long-time hunter, I remember clearly the days of being a huntard and not knowing better, and then the day when “oh, how about I move while he’s slower” kicked in — and then when it made more sense to send the pet in first…. and then when I stopped dying, which of course rocks!
I love your commentary too
Donald Pyers on 03 Jan 2008 at 9:56 am #
Great piece of work. Bliz should make it a sticky in their hunter forum. It’s required viewing!
I do think that the basic mechanics of the class need to be covered as well.
e.g. Jump shot and strafing how-to’s, and why did you start with serpent, concuss, arcane, and auto and then switch to only serpent ant auto.
I see a lot of hunters who are confused by the keyboard/mouse combinations and who also unload with every shot they’ve got.
Pablo on 03 Jan 2008 at 10:11 am #
Awesome movie! I plan on showing this to my 9 and 12 year olds (Melee huntards FTW). Like Mania I was also confused about how to ‘pull the pet back’. I’ve done it accidentally before, but never on purpose. I even tried watching when you did it on the video, but the full version stopped my PC dead, and the small version wasn’t big enough to see which icon was clicked. So, for the record fellow Hunters…
How to pull your pet back to you:
1. Click on the ‘follow’ icon
2. He comes back to your side
3. “but he’s already set to follow”…click it anyway, it works.

Wamogri, kiting in pvp is VERY different and a LOT harder, since you’re oponent will use all-known-to-him techniques to counter it, but, on the bright side, when you’re close to mastering pvp kiting, then pve will be absolute cake for you

Levesk on 04 Jan 2008 at 6:21 am #
Hi BRK, I only wanted to point out the fact that sometimes I intentionally melee, and for a reason.
At higher levels, and especially in PvP, you WILL need to Wing Clip to get back to range, therefore you need your melee weapon skill as high as you can. Otherwise your opponent/mob will parry/block/miss the wing clip.
One example are many mobs in Un’Goro crater that will fear your pet and run for you. If BW is on cooldown you can’t prevent this from happen and some mobs simply run too fast to stay at range (or the area is so crowded that you can’t kite properly).
So sometimes I send in my pet, let him take aggro then run to the mob and backstab it until I level my skills. Other than that I avoid melee as much as I can.

Great movies BRK.
First toon I had when I started WoW was a hunter. Too bad this was not available at that time. I had no idea about pets or kite by that time. i think i learn you can train your pet when I was already level 25 or so
Keep it comming BRK and thanks for the time and effort on doing this.
Mangaras on 04 Jan 2008 at 9:53 am #
Those are some pretty mana-intensive fights if you ask me! Food comes pretty cheaply while leveling when you to level 12 try kiting with wing clip.
It’s also important to point out that you need .5 seconds of standing still for an autoshot to fire so you can kite and shoot with autoshot if the opponent is wing-clipped.
Marks/Surv hunters who’s pets do not hold aggro as well can benefit from an aimed shot opener/conc/auto/serpent wing clip run to range, pause, shoot, run, pause shoot.
Works even better when you get steady shot.
*Hunters should get Steady shot at level 50, level 62 only gives a short amount of time for hunters to learn how to shot-weave (the most basic of hunter abilities). The entire class changes at level 62 which I think is garbage.
Capn John on 04 Jan 2008 at 2:39 pm #
@ Mangaras: What about a T2 BM Talent that affects a Special you won’t get until you’re lvl 66?
Yup, 2/2 TPs in Focused Fire (achieved by lvl 16) increases your chance to Crit with Kill Command by 20% Pity you can’t learn Kill Command until you’re 66.

BRK,
Thanks for your awesome videos. I have been mulling over making a hunter (BE or course, Hyoushi) for a while but this sealed the deal. I made him last night, go to 10 and then went to Durator and got my Corrupted Mottled Boar (Sighboar). My first toon was a huntard. I say that because no one was willing to help me with all the tips and tricks. You have taken made it so even the people that swore they would never make another Hunter are at it again.
I was a bit confused when you were talking about kiting. I figured it out once I got concussive shot. I just felt there should have been little things(i.e. When you hit level 4 …; At level 8 you get … and this is how to properly use it..)
Keep up the good work, feel better and take off that dress you look ridiculous. lol…

Gee, I wish I’d had this a month ago when I signed up for WoW; it would’ve saved me far more levels of huntarding than I’d like to admit. I did learn on my own (eventually) to let my pet tank, but oh, the pain in the meantime.

My one main comment is the video is a little biased towards boars. Granted, they are the easiest starter pet, but pretty much every other starter pet doesn’t have a handy Charge to quickly build pet aggro as well as close in quickly. I think it’d be more fair showing these techniques with a more average pet because even though the pets aren’t well balanced, I wouldn’t want everyone to feel they *have* to start with a boar.
Also, strafing doesn’t work so well with enemies which can outrun you. I’d like to see some more advanced techniques like jump-shot and PvP techniques touched on at least.
In addition, sometimes people *are* going to pull aggro of their pet. I think you should have shown how to let your pet re-establish it or deal with it rather than just die, as that can be difficult before you have traps.
I thought most of this should be common sense and I picked it up on my own, but glad to have it out there so people who really don’t get how to play Hunters or are coming off a melee mindset can learn. Especially since the game fails to explain how to do things very well, in particular with pet training and only a fraction of players check forums

Too bad my Dad is on 56k, next time I go home I’ll show him this, but I think I’ll be doing a lot of coaching to teach him how to strafe and move the camera around without moving himself. It took him a while to learn how to turn around, nevermind
