BRK Intro to Pet Training Movie

BRK » 03 January 2008 » In Movie, Pets »

These little movies are too much fun. We don’t think many people will learning anything new here, but as starter-material we think it’s not too bad.

You can download the small version (4.7MB) here.

You can download the larger version (23.8MB) here.

And yes, Mrs BRK got us sick. Thus the poor-quality of our voice in the movie. We apologize. /apologizeEdit: With so many people unhappy with the movies being shoved down their RSS-throats, we’re going to go back to YouTube for hosting our embedded movies. However, we’ll keep hosting the downloads ourselves.

For the Lowbie-Movie, we’re going to split it into two movies and have YouTube host both pieces while maintaining the complete movie available for download on BRK.net.

I think that was a great little addition to your noob hunter tutorial set. The first time I leveled a hunter, I didn’t know how to get new pet spell until I was upper 20s. Unfortunately, now its a matter of finding time to go find the right beast to tame to learn the right spell.

    Thanks.

    Hi BRK,

I showed this around the guild. A newbie hunter commented that she found it very helpful but she “[is] having a hard time actually strafing… (my keyboard just doesn’t seem to want to do it well)”

I chatted with her and it turned out she wasn’t aware that you use Q and E to strafe. She’s -very- new and only knew about WASD.

I realize this is assumed knowledge.. but it’s something worth mentioning if you do another of these.

    BRK,

Love the videos. I just rerolled alliance on skullcrusher and can’t wait to have a dwarf hunter.

Thanks for all the work you have done…it has made wow so much fun for me as a casual player.

this makes me want to start a new hunter and level him again all the way to 70…

Damn you BRK Damn you to the horde

  5. Ericka on January 3rd, 2008 1:22 pm

Well done. Wish I had seen this on my first (now retired and relegated to being a bank alt) hunter. I was SOOO bad at it that I made a mage, then a priest, then a druid, then a warlock… You see where I am going here?

But I did figure it out eventually, and have another 70 hunter now. Even knowing it all, this video presented it especialy well.

    Again, well done!

  6. Agador on January 3rd, 2008 1:51 pm

Well I have to admit that these two videos of yours may actually get me to try out playing a hunter. Lately I’ve been all about warlock, and tended to figure that a hunter may get redundant as being another pet/minion class..however this makes it seem different enough that I might enjoy some hunter fun.

Nice way to show how to learn abilities. Wish I’d know that back when i was that low. Since then, I’ve used an addon called Hunter’s Helper for finding my next rank of learnable abilities.

  8. Mr. X on January 3rd, 2008 2:44 pm

OMG!!! So many good stuff in one site! I had to learn all this by myself… I think a lot of people will find your guides very useful (I totally do!!!)

By the way… How about using aspect of the monkey while taming?

    Thanks BRK!!

  9. Conjude on January 3rd, 2008 2:52 pm

I’ve just started an Alt hunter and this is great info, since I am still a noob myself. ;)

  10. kunukia on January 3rd, 2008 3:01 pm

Good stuff. I remember HOW much of a noob I was for so long. I don’t think I used half of my skills until I was in the 40’s anyway. Keep making them, and do a strafe one could you?

  11. Adrus on January 3rd, 2008 3:39 pm

I can’t use strafe I use my mouse to move something I picked up from playing doom a long time ago. I wish I could learn to use buttons to run, it would help when I’m playing one of my healers but i have no control with them…..

One thing you need to add to your poll
i don’t get sick and if i do i don’t stop for it

    Hi BRK,

While these videos are really good, and a fantastic resource for new hunters, the way in which the are distributed makes life a bit difficult. They seem to be directly embedded QuickTime movies on not only the web page, but also in the RSS feed. I don’t know if embedding them in the RSS feed is intentional, but for the bandwidth-challenged, who are reading their RSS feeds in Apple’s Mail.app, Mail gives the spinning beachball once you click on the RSS item until it has loaded the entire movie.

Now, I realise this is a problem on Apple’s part, but it does mean that I don’t get to enjoy reading your blog postings as much.

Yes, there are alternative RSS readers out there that probably do a much better job, like Vienna, but I’m trying to drink the magic cool-aid here and use as much Apple software as I can, whenever it is possible to do so over 3rd party software.

Kitty, why is your hunter in a dress? Oo

  14. Grindurbonze on January 3rd, 2008 6:38 pm

    BRK,

Some of us may not learn more than what we learned the hard way or by reading, but some of us learn by example much better and faster than by reading. Thx! You should include this material in your book, if that is still in the works.

  15. Viktel on January 3rd, 2008 8:42 pm

H3ll, its just fun to watch!

I have a question though. I’d like to display it on my own blog and guild forums like a YouTube movie. We have a few brand new-ish lowbie hunters that would love both of these tutorials.

Is there code for that? I don’t think I have space to upload the entire movie.

The return of course would be the possibilty of a few more click-throughs…..
    ;-)
    Thanks again,

BRK.. just wanted to thank you once more for the lowbie video guide. I leveled twice today.. no deaths all because of your video.. were normally I would give up in the first bar or so because of too many deaths and frustration.

Don’t know what i’d do without you!!

    BRK,

and of course you KNOW this, but I didn’t see it in the movie with the bear taming - which was a good chance to show it - is that you can teach growl in combat.

    Yes! It’s True!

In the middle of jubilations after taming that special pet and you get jumped by a spawn? Immediately take evasive actions and put the pet on that spawn - and before taking a shot (and pulling it to you with your uber /flex) - train your new pet with Growl. *then* open fire.

    = )

  18. Perkins on January 3rd, 2008 11:19 pm

Yo BRK, love the movies. Keep up the great work!
A couple of suggestions on pet taming: aspect of the monkey and pull using concussive shot. Then, of course, at level 20 you lay down a freezing trap before you pull with concussive shot.

  19. Mrs BRK on January 4th, 2008 12:16 am

I got you sick? As IF.

It’s just like when we got pregnant with Sammy. I go along every month, minding my own business and ovulating right on schedule, no bun in the oven until you come along (pun intended) and all of a sudden it’s MY fault that I deliver a 9-pound, 15-ounce linebacker-to-be who will someday eat us out of house and home?

Puh-leeze. *You* got me sick, Bucko. Now turn your wheezy, snotty butt over so I can get some sleep!

PS - Your gravelly voice is sexy as all get out. Just thought you’d want to know.

Weird to hear your voice after so long, I forgot it, but then remembered! Good movie damh ;P

  21. steve on January 4th, 2008 9:26 am

How important is it that I learn new pet skills? I assume that its relatively important since you did a video on it.

    -steve

  22. Galorfinor on January 4th, 2008 10:13 am

    @ steve,

It’s very important, as you lvl up you’ll need to find other pets that have the different skills that you’ll not find with the pet trainers. Petopia (off to the side on BRK sidebar) is a real good resource to find which pet has what skills. Find it, train it, learn from it, and either keep it or move on to another pet. Most hunters usually find their main pets around lvl 35-40. Because there are so many different types of pets, each with their own attributes it really hard to decide which pets to keep and which ones to let go.

There again it also depend on you style of play, I myself have 2 Cats (Rak’s, got him a few months ago and still lvlv’ing up to 70 and a Shadowmaw (she my main) since lvl 40). But I did have a Ravenger when BC first started), Owl (Wise from Felwood), and then my main Cat (Maggie Mae). As you level on your toon and along with your pet you’ll find out that there’s not enough room in the stable and us hunters, who get attached to their pets. WE NEED MORE STABLE SPACE, PLZ! just me ranting. hehe.

By the time that you hit 70’s you should have most of the skills that you’ll need to train any pet just incase you’ll ever want to get rid of a pet for a new one.

Enjoy and have fun finding them and taming them

BRK great training flims, where were you back 2 years ago when I needed ya, lol get well soon. :)

  23. Ragner on January 4th, 2008 10:53 am

    @steve

I’m a new 70 and I still have the cat I tamed in the NE starting area. If your concern is loyalty, its no big deal to every few levels go tame a critter for new abilities and dump it right away. I’m an old RP’er and my hunter fishing for best friend the cat is priceless. Other than 10 min. every 5 lvls or so, chalpatuk has been by my side through the whole game.

  24. Levesk on January 4th, 2008 11:29 am

BTW, no big news but some skills can be learned out of combat (Dash, Dive, Furious Howl, Prowl, the turtle’s Shell and I can’t remember the others).
You just click on them, wait for cooldown and click again.
I used this trick to save some time when learning some higher-level non-combat skills.
I hope I have not been too obvious :)

  25. Capn John on January 4th, 2008 11:36 am

I was well into my 30s and really struggling with my Hunter and Pet not holding Aggro, meanwhile my brother’s Mage blew right by me. I’d forgotten all about Talent Points, and never learned Growl past lvl 10 or any of the old pre 1.8 Pet Skills. I was a sad little Hunter who learned much of this stuff the really hard way.

For those people using Mouselook (the only way to play, IMHO ;) I recommend rebinding Strafe Left & Right to A & D. They’re more natural resting positions for your shorter fingers when your longer, middle finger is on the W-forward key. To keep three fingers poised over Q, W, & E requires you to arch your hand a lot more and that’s just asking for trouble. Not in-game, IRL; it’s all about being as ergonomic as possible.

    Thanks for making these.
    This stuff is pure gold.

  27. Paul on January 4th, 2008 3:08 pm

It might be worth making a not-so-noob hunter’s guide as well. It may even be in the making. It would be worthwhile to let people know they can use some tricks to tame higher level mobs. I always train by dropping a freezing trap and then hitting the mob with concussive shot. If done properly, you can train a mob and take only one or two hits.
Sadly, I’ve watched hunters tame higher level pets with the mob hitting them during the whole channeling time. That gets painful with the decreased armor.

  28. corwyn on January 4th, 2008 5:54 pm

I like to tame with nothing but love. No trap, No shot at all (tame range is about the same as bow shot range). I have never had a problem taming a new pet (well except taming that level 28 worg when I was level 27).

Heck, my hunter has no assurance that it is going to work at all. But she is looking for a companion, not a servant.

    Thank You Kindly,

  29. Paul on January 4th, 2008 8:23 pm

I’m a little more on the uncaring side, I guess. With my method I have autoshot one time just about every pet I tamed. Meh. I gave em some meat and it seemed that all was forgotten.

@BRK it just struck me that your voice reminds me of Red Green.

  30. Levesk on January 5th, 2008 6:10 am

Some say they have tamed “higher level” pets.
Being curious I ask them how, as it’s only possible to tame pets at your level or less.
If it was possible to tame higher level pets, one would go out and tame King Bangalash at level 12 or Trachela at 15…

  31. Paul on January 5th, 2008 9:01 am

Higher, as in 50 is higher than 10.
A hunter cannot ever have a pet that has a level higher than their own.

[...] is one of the few WoW blogs I read and last week they started a video series on Hunters and the do’s and don’t’s. Just be careful, BRK was very sick while making these [...]

  33. SillyOrk on January 7th, 2008 12:56 pm

I am a regular reader of BRK, and even at lvl63, I am still learning new tricks. I was born into WoW as a NE warrior (he was much more handsome than something with tusks), but always had a secret preference for hunter.

Thanks for all the great tips. You make the deep and complex world of hunters a little brighter. :)

Just thought I’d leave a note saying that I just used these beginner’s tactics to kite Stitches from the middle of Duskwood, into Darkshire, and back. Got some help from the guards and a couple other players, too, but I did get to loot him when all was said and done. Thanks for the movie, and keep up the good work.
