We Practice Shameless Self-Promtion Too!

“Dear BRK, I’ve been a loyal reader of your blog for quite some time. Nice job with it. It’s helped me and many other hunters I’ve sent your way over the past year or so.

“To the point, I just wanted to point out a little addon I just wrote. Shameless self promotion for the win ;) You might consider it too much automation, given your view on the castsequence macros, but I’d be curious as to your opinion on it. It’s new and I’m still working out any remaining kinks, of course. No software is ever completely free of bugs :)

“Thanks much, Brannis (42 dwarf hunter) & Renfield (albino bat)”

Smells like a nice idea to us. Turning off Growl is one of the first things most experienced raid leaders remind hunters to do, so having an addon do it for you automatically might just be a whole lotta Win. Having the option to turn off Dive and Dash and Screech is even better. Nice Job.

    That seems pretty cool.

On a side note, it seems that the pet attack macro is no longer working:

    /petattack
    /cast Hunter’s Mark

Pet attacks, but no Hunter’s Mark shows up. What the h3ll? How did they break that in the latest patch (or is it just me)?

  2. Frankl on January 8th, 2008 6:20 pm

Hmmm. Never mind. I don’t know what I did, but it’s finally working again.

  3. Kathlyn on January 8th, 2008 6:33 pm

Oooh. The addon looks especially good for half-huntards like me who can never figure out how to turn it off.

@Frankl - You were most likely having line of sight issues, where pet will attack but Hunter’s Mark won’t go up due to you not being in the target’s line of sight.

    See? I’m only half-huntard.

Why turn off Dive/Dash in an instance? If the pet is performing squishie saving duties, the faster he gets there the better right?

  5. cgeorgemo on January 8th, 2008 7:29 pm

If he’s not saving squishies he’s just burning focus with dash or dive. For DPS I usually turn off everything in an instance but the focus dump and cower. If the pet is the offtank I turn off cower and turn on growl.
Is this fairly standard? What do you other hunters have your pet running with in instances?

I wished he had used ACE2 so i could update the Addon using Ace Updater.

Actually, now that i turned off Bestial Disciplin i find that often when i had burned one target down there is not enough focus left to squish the next one .. how about extending the addon in a way that it automatically turns everything off once the pettarget is below (x) health and back on once its over (x) health? That way the pet should be at max focus at the end of each fight …

BRK, why would I turn off Screech in an instance? That’s why I got my owl, to help out during instances. If the tank is worth a damn my owl won’t pull aggro (but yes, I’ve had to turn it off…), and I’m careful to turn it off when we have a battle that includes separately aggro’d mobs like the Slaves in Steamvaults.

It’s a nice idea, but unfortunately, as far as I know, isn’t feasable. Making on the fly decisions like that, at least in combat, is exactly what Blizzard killed off when the 2.0 patch hit. I can’t modify the attributes of the PetInstanceButton to change what it does when you’re in combat, sadly. If you can think of any enhancements that’d be useful and which can be -set up- out of combat, let me know :)

Ivaldi… Screech breaks crowd control. For example, mage sheeps, rogue saps, owl screeches, mobs run amok. Mobs running amok in an instance usually spells trouble. Turn off screech.

  11. Exanimo on January 9th, 2008 3:05 am

Oh my.. not another addon. I already feel dirty for going too easy on myself by addon abbuse… seriously i feel handicapped when a new patch hits us and all addon sites go down as they get spammed by addon-aholics like me.
Best to try to do as many things as i can/willing to without an addon, one of the reasons i use a standard UI i suppose. :)

  12. Anonymous on January 9th, 2008 3:57 am

No no no no no. I’ve been using an Owl for the longest time and finally to set the record straight. Screech does NOT BREAK CROWD CONTROL. It only damages the target your pet is directly attacking and causes very minimal additional threat to the surround area with the debuff. Since no dmg is dealt no CC will ever be broken

If you are running with a tank that cannot out aggro screech and basic pet damage please get a new tank. That also goes for cower, which is the most useless pet skill ever it should come pre trained on sporebats. Again the only way I have EVER pulled initial aggro or aggro at all in this game with my pet is, by leaving growl on or attacking with my pet before the tank can engage.

  13. Rotseh on January 9th, 2008 5:02 am

Owls are effin’ noisy. This pesty sound they make, on and on and on… right next to the tank, drives you nuts.

Then there’s their large hitbox and constant movement, making judging distance difficult and usually leading to accidental pulls. Also bars the view of tank and melees too much.

  14. Wendar on January 9th, 2008 5:20 am

I guess the addon could have its uses, but I use different combinations of growl/dash/bite/gore on my ravager, depending on the situation. I’m MM specced so I often have Creepy sitting next to me sharpening his spines just waiting for a mob to get loose and go for the squishies. Then he comes into his own, dashing in and saving the day. I know my personal DPS suffers using this tactic, but I’ve saved the group a corpse-run too many times to even consider changing.

Also, screech doesn’t break CC, but owls are damn annoying in instances. Especially instances with tight corridors etc, those flappy wings get really irritating after a while.

  15. John Oliver on January 9th, 2008 7:52 am

This looks great. I have gotten pretty good at going passive/NoGrowl when heading off to an instance (its part of my checklist: pots|ammo|healed|checkLoggerHead range|Pet stuff

My problem is when I get out and go back to farming. I am always puzzled when I send BearToo off to engage a Mob and she can not hold aggro … Whoops, need Growl on LOL.

  16. Dunbarton on January 9th, 2008 10:02 am

We were just talking about pet aggro issues the other day amongst hunters in our guild. I have a wolf and another hunter has a boar.

Doing heroics, I leave growl up. It puts my wolf’s threat right up there with the ranged dpser’s, but has never been an issue for our tank. My friend’s pig however, can pull aggro off the tank. The reason….not growl, but charge+gore. Turn off charge, everything is fine.

I don’t use any add-ons, other than informational ones, like Omen and the only macro I’ve got set up, is to assist the tank and cast my hunter’s mark.

Now if I’m playing with an unknown tank, I’ll turn off growl.

  17. Ivaldi, Pumbaa and Owl on January 9th, 2008 12:55 pm

I third that Owls do not break CC. I’ve been running with my owl long enough to know. I can drop a trop right next to a mob he’s engaged with and the other mob stays politely put.

As for annoying… I say deal with it. There aren’t too many things I say that for, but he’s worth whatever annoyance. It’s for the tank!

I should also add I play with the sound off.

  18. Stoop on January 9th, 2008 1:12 pm

I leave charge turned off and put it in my petattack macro. Keeps him from doing those “I’m a crazy pig” midcombat kamikaze charges at random bad guys.

  19. Saami on January 10th, 2008 9:34 am

Is there a way to effectively catch and set off the Kill Command in a macro?

  20. Udan on January 10th, 2008 8:03 pm

Growl can be a drastic oversight when left on, but personaly I like to be able to switch it on and off as I choose in an instance. I’d say to any hunter out there, get used to turning it on and off.

Being able to switch growl on when the preverbial poop hits the fan is a life saver to any healer that’s going to save your life and those around you.

And as a bonus to that, you’d be suprised how many thanks of being the greatest hunter to have ever graced the surface of Azeroth you get, just for being able to pull a loose mob off a healer.
