Almost 10,000 DPS and the Feeling is Groovy
Monday night, AC wiped Gruul off the map at exactly ten growths with a raid DPS of almost 10,000. In this anonymous WWS report, we are Thetys. We are particularly pleased with our 1056DPS on the Gruul kill.
And for you roguish types out there, we don’t think Doomilias will mind if we point out that he is Jion.
As for the real purpose of this post, check out the pets on Gruul. WWS anonymized our Wind Serpent’s name to, are you ready, Hobbes.

Anywho, our Wind Serpent laid down the law with 283DPS. Cheshire (SV hunter’s cat) and Felix (BM hunter’s scorpid) were pretty far behind, as expected.
But the Lightning Breath was 7% of our total combined DPS and that’s about 1-2% more than Claw on real-Hobbes usually is. Our research is showing that if one can get a high enough RAP and get good crit-rate going, Go For The Throat and Bestial Discipline can make Lightning Breath a substantial bit more powerful than Claw.
We really are enjoying our Wind Serpent, now we just need to name him. It’s gotta be in the same coolness-realm as Spider for our boar, so this isn’t gonna be easy.

Windserpent’s name? Samuel?
You know : flying snake -> Snake’s on a plane -> Samuel L. Jackson?

I named my wind serpent Quetzalcoatl. That was the name of an Aztec god. I thought it was pretty cool.
Kaa, the snake in “The Jungle Book” was voiced by Sterling Holloway in the Disney version. Holloway was also the voice of Winnie the Pooh in the Disney versions. “Winniethepooh” might be too long, though.
I have really learned to fear good hunters with Windserpents, that Lightning Breath is just ridiculous /shudder
I’ve got a Windserpent on one of my hunter alts… and I’m really tempted to snag one on my main as well.
I pinched this from your forums, but Tesla is the best name for a Windserpent.
They really are excellent pets once you get over the 25% crit mark. For SV Hunters particularly, they’re awesome.
Not to mention they eat mage food.

Name him Tavi, as in Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. I was going to suggest Nag, but I don’t think anyone would get the reference.
My hunter’s windserpent is named Trousersnake, another hunter in an old guild just went for Trouser.

How high of rap and crit are you talking? I roll with Sander’s(cat) since lvl 21 but am thinking of getting another pet. I have tried about everything but a Wind Serpent and always go back to Sanders.
Also congrats on the drop from Doomwalker.
Tesla is good, after Nicola Tesla and his Tesla-coil. Lighting etc.
Thor isn’t bad either, thunder and lighting, big bad god.
Zeus? Why not? Sounds good to me.
Kaa is unfortunately not too good, he is pretty stupid and we don’t want that with out pets.
Hurricane? Wind Serpent and Hurricane goes well together. Sort of his home away from home.
Same with Storm.
Quetzalcoatl is deffo cool. The Feathered Serpent is one cool god. But the name is hard to pronounce if you haven’t heard it, so people might get a little confused.
Static, as in static electricity.
Gordon, as in Flash Gordon. Flash can work too, but isn’t as cool in making a reference.
I think I have expended all my ideas, and commented on all the ones I found good here.
Good fight btw. But does Gruul have loads of armor? I have seen my cat do more than 300 DPS a few times, and I don’t even raid yet.

I would imagine, Lightening Breath and some resistances, growl for emergency OMG the healer pulled aggro times.

My question is how did you keep him meleeing and not have him pull back to do LB as that always seemed to be my trouble.
Do they still do that? One way to stop it is to take LB off autocast and bind it to your Steady and Arcane Shots.
problem is, you kinda have to shot rotate manually for this to work. I was hoping they’d fixed the issue so I could use a macro.
How about “Boar”? In the line of “Spider” been an actuall boar, and “Boar” been a snake ..
Or combine lightning, thunder from above with a little Shakespeare and call him “Tempest”..
My suggestion would be Raiden (Lightning dude from the Mortal Kombat series).
I imagine he wouldn’t be a good choice for Hydross (due to Hydross going immune to Nature Damage half the fight).

I recently tamed one last weekend and for our SSC run last night (Hydross, Lurker, Leo) he was just slightly ahead of the other hunter’s ravager. I named him Tractor (since he shoots out tractor beams).
For what I tamed him:
Growl: rank 8
Dive: rank 3
Lightning Breath: rank 6
Avoidance: rank 2
Cobra Reflexes: rank 1
Arcane Resistance: rank 2
Fire Resistance: rank 2
Nature Resistance: rank 2
Arcane and Fire resistances are for Al’ar and VoidReaver, and I had extra points so I chose Nature just because.
Those curious about the backing out to shoot lightningbreath: I turned it off on the pet autocast bar, and have it in my steady/auto/KC macro. So it attempts to shoot lightning breath all time, and with 37% crit raid buffed - it fires quite often.
Zeus, Thor, Static, Tesla are cool names, but how about these others:

Quetzalcoatl is the Aztec and Toltec serpent god but thats a little long…..
Growing up on a server where every other character name is something relating to the class (i.e. Illkiteyou, dotdotwin, bubblelover, gangstaheals, etc.,etc.) I am quite against naming your pet something…normal…much like very many of the suggestions made above. Hence the name of my Wind Serpent is…Lips.
I do like Tesla, though. And I thought Ohm was clever.
My wind serpent is called Osmosis because I was impressed with how the lightning breath just absorbed UrsaMajor’s health. My daughter told me, when my first attempts at PVP with Ursa were abject failures, that I needed a PVP pet and she said cat or wind serpent or ravager. Ravagers reminded me of the creatures in “Starship Troopers” and I hated that movie. Everyone has a cat and no fair pointing out that I do now too. Thus, wind serpent it was. If you have to go through water to get somewhere, they are cooooool looking swimmers. Ursa and Catatonic do some sort of modified dog paddle. Ossy swims.
I prefer to defend flags in BG’s so Ossy is set on passive most of the time. If I know there’s enemy about, I switch to attack so he can get that first LB hit before he takes off to melee. I find I have to manually pull him back a lot just to make sure he uses his breath weapon. It would be a real pain if I charged into battle, but in defensive mode, it works okay for me. You’re right, though, it would be nice to be able to have him camp and LB instead of melee.
I have a BA in English Lit so “Tempest” is a good one. “Prospero”, in the same vein, or “Shelley” in homage to Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” which harnessed lightning to awaken the monster. “VonDoom” from the Fantastic Four comics would be interesting. “Crackle” or “Zzzzzzt”, for the sound lightning makes……
Okay I’ll stop now. Back to drooling over a MacBookAir.
I haven’t tried the windserpents myself yet. But as more and more information comes out about them I am slowly starting to become more curious. 2 questions though. BRK, can you drop the list of how you have him trained? And is there a nifty macro running around out there that hunters are using to just keep the flying bugger by your side tossing nukes that folks are using?

I can’t see the WWS right now (work firewall). Mind answering a couple things?
1. What was the crit rate on LB? Did you have LotP and Improved Judgement of the Crusader?
2. How did the WS DPS compare to the cat?
3. If you can, can you give the #melee attacks/second for the WS and the cat?
I think the biggest problem of the WS for the BM is that Frenzy is going to drop quite a lot more, especially since you’re specced 4/5 frenzy (IIRC). Need to run the numbers though.

I’ll admit your new piggie’s name got me inspired last night. I’d noticed just after dinging level 48 that my old pal Bellygrub had been languishing in the stable at a mere level 29 (too much love for Humar I’m afraid). So I headed off to the Blasted Lands to tame one of the ashmane boars there. Once accomplished, there was only one name I could give him: PeterPorker.

Electrophorus electricus Is the genus name For the Electric eel and the Swim animation for the windserpent gave me the Idea for the name.
My WS is named Eric (as in “are all your pets named Eric” ).
If you are a Python fan (as BRK obviously is) then you will remember that sketch. The constant flapping is rather annoying however. As is trying to pick things up in between wing flaps.
I named the rare white one from the Feralas…Stormbringer, after Elric’s sword…Elric was an albino…and Storm is white…however stormbringer the sword is black…but stormbringer the wind serpent shoots lightning.
Why not call him “Megavolts”.
