We Didn’t Noob It Too Much
We are teamed with a Shadow Priest, remember? She has some experience, we don’t really, and it was fun!
Here’s who we faced and how it all went down.
Match 1. Loss, Frost Mage and Resto Druid. FD’d out of the Water Elemental’s notice, but we didn’t focus-fire, and they did. 0-1.
Match 2. Win, Marksman Hunter and Hybrid Priest. We drooled over the priest and Hobbes chewed him up in ten seconds. Loved killing that MM, too. 1-1 and much dancing to celebrate our first win. /score!
Match 3. Loss, Elemental Shaman and Combat Rogue. Rogues, BRK always has a Freezing Trap behind him. Always. We fought two different rogues and trapped them every time to start the match. We lost because our partner disconnected at the start. Phooey. 1-2.
Match 4. Win, Fire Mage and Hybrid Warlock. Hobbes had to be restrained when he saw the ‘lock. Golly he went down quickly. Don’t even remember killing the mage, the taste of the ‘lock was so good. If we find a warlock-warlock team, we’re gonna cry tears of joy. 2-2.
Match 5. Loss, Frost Mage and Resto Druid again, same team. We did much better the second time, but the mage ice-blocked and saved his life while the druid just wouldn’t die. 2-3.
Match 6. Win, Fire Mage and Hybrid Warlock. Second helping of ‘lock @ss was just as tasty as the first. 3-3.
Match 7. Loss, Subtlety Rogue and Frost Mage. Checked them out on Armory, way too much PvP gear to be 1500 rated. The rogue one-shot our priest, kablooie! Jeebus. 3-4.
Match 8. Win, Ret Pally and Discipline Priest. Toughest priest we’ve ever faced, wow. Cross-healing was impressive. We killed the priest at the same time they killed our priest. Ret pally versus BM hunter… Hobbes won. We kited that Pally and he was pissed. Finally, we were Judgemented of something but Hobbes was Frenzied and interrupting the Pally’s healing; just ate him for breakfast. We were screaming into vent, “KILL “EM HOBBES!! KILL ‘EM!!” and he did! /smoke ‘em if ya got em, 4-4.
Match 9. Loss, Subtlety Rogue and Frost Mage again, same team, same result. Don’t even want to talk about it. 4-5.
Match 10. WIN! BM Hunter and Holy Pally. He had a Ravager, we had Hobbes who is maxed for this stuff. As soon as the other hunter went for Hobbes, we went Rapid Fire and haste trinket and pretended that dude was Gruul. Dead hunter, we win, 5-5!
Respecing? You bet, Spirit Bond is horrible. More thoughts later, gotta respec for SSC now.
This could get really expensive…

Grats man ) Have fun raiding.
Thats a pretty fair first 10, congrats!
Much better than my score my first ten!
Grats! Seems like you’re going to be doing well
I cant wait to get to 70 and do 5v5 3v3 and 2v2s! My partner will be a elemental shammy! PEW PEW!
good stuff. Please also note the arena zone you are in each time (a simple Nagrand, BEM will suffice). some zones are easier for some encounters than others.
but a very fair job of the first run indeed.
I would actually advocate you guys doing a ton of runs for the first few weeks (if ya find a day/time with short downtime between fights), just for the sake of practice. teaming up in EotS might also provide a good practice environment as well.
Cheers
-K
Hehe I love your team name, its almost as good as my team name Ready to Lose.
lol, wait till you get to the rogues who know how to avoid traps… CoS is such a bitch.
good to see you back in the PvP action though, thats where the real fun is IMO.
I dunno, I still have spirit bond on me. The way I see it, it quietly increases my hp total without anyone noticing. Maybe I’ll drop it once I finish gearing up but for now, I’m leaving it in.
Spirit Bond is a huge waste if you plan on going anywhere in arena…the matches simply don’t last long enough to justify spending 2 points that could easily be spent elsewhere for greater benefit. I’d say drop Beastial Disc. and Spirit Bond, and put into Focused Fire 2, Bestial Swiftness instead. More damage for you, and if you get any crits off (depending on enemy resi.) - more damage from Hobbes on Kill Command.
One thing you must have, BRK, is Bestial Swiftness. All arenas are outdoors, this will save your pet a lot of slow running after people, esp. if your pet is being CC’d at all.
Is it only me unlucky with Rogues?
I can kite and trap, but still every rogue I face seem to KNOW where the trap is and Disarms it.
We usually dance around the trap as I set a Flare and HM him, so I can see him and just go around the trap. No. He tries to go around it to get to me, and at the end disarm it and then uses all his tricks.
Trapping a Rogue has become a true problem on my server.
Second are Shamans… I will never understand why people think Warlock are OP. They’re not, Shamans are. Wanna kite a Shaman? He will shock you, then shock again and again, you never get enough range to kite properly.
Not too bad your first time out.
You’re in the 1500’s. Much. Much different once you start getting into the higher brackets.
You WILL get crushed if you don’t have any resilience and they do…
You made a comment on match 7 that the team had too much PVP gear to be 1500.
This is a tactic that teams use to get gear. Players use “Throw Away” teams with alts to tank scores in arena intentionally. Then once the score is low, they drop the alts from the team and bring in the main so they get paired up against “noobs” and crush them. It totally sucks and Blizz needs to stop this but hey! Whatever!
Gratz BRK. Better than my first outing which ended 4-6. I didn’t comment then but when I saw you take Spirit Bond I had a feeling that was going out the door soon as in 2v2 you won’t have enough time for that to make much difference. In 5v5 maybe but thats only if you aren’t focused fire from the get go. The thing to me that seemed most helpful was being the aggressor from the beginning. I turn on track humaniods and type /target %name% and send my kitty on its way.
One thing to note incase you haven’t fought one yet but with playing against a hybrid warlock I’m sure you did. If they have Soul Link up if you damage the warlock their pet will get unfrozen from a freezing trap. Its annoying so if I know I’m playing against one of them I either put a frost trap or a snake trap if the lock is close enough.
That’s a good start, and if you’d like to see yourself in the 1600s bracket, you probably want to play on the same day and time every week. Be careful of high traffic times. Couple comments about specific classes you faced:
Warlock… enjoy it while you can. If you see FSW shoulders sticking up, nuke warlocks every time. Easy street. But wait til you face your first SL/SL lock in a mix of s1,2,3 gear. His unbuffed12-13k health and freakin damage reduction along with ability do damage you without worrying about LOS while still siphoning life from you and your pet together will be a humbling experience. SL/SL locks don’t care that you can’t be feared. They don’t need to fear you. Plus, they’ll be alive long after your BW wears off. They may deal slightly less damage than you, but they can live longer and focus on kiting.
Rogues. Forget freeze trap in arenas, please. It’s really a waste unless they don’t have a trinket. Frost trap or snake trap, which a penchant for snaketrap. You know how easy it is to kite a roge with snakes on him? Your spriest buddy willy thank you for it.
Resto druid…nerf please.
Your combo of shadowpriest/bm hunter. Want points fast? Ask your friend to respec. Holy/disc and bm hunter will win a LOT more games, even without good gear.
One more thing, if mages iceblock or pallys bubble, make sure your spriest is focused on that target too and does a timely mass dispel.
The costs of respeccing for Arena each week is what prompted me to level a second (well, third, if you count the Horde Shadow priest) priest. I now raid consistently with my 23/38/0 Holy priest and trounce the Arena with my 42/19/0 Discipline priest. It probably doesn’t help that I’m a confirmed priestaphiliac, but at least I claim that my hunter is my main!
The aforementioned comment about Discipline priests is pretty accurate (depending on skill, preference, and playstyle, of course). Discipline priests have huge survivability and unmatched synergy. With that tree, you get the benefits of reduced Mana Burn times, increased resistance to Dispel/Purge and numerous cheesy buffs that keep your opponents expending mana to remove your better buffs. Furthermore, Power Infusion and Pain Supression are two talents that are more beneficial with another caster on the team but still can help keep people alive and doing damage. However, as I mentioned before, respeccing does get expensive and your Arena partner might be loathe to pay the gold each week to get her ten in. Shadow priests can do extremely well in Arena, but make sure your partner knows the importance of dropping out of Shadowform (if she even fights in Shadowform! Many do not.) and healing when needed.
One thing to have your priest do is work on getting a specific PvP set that gets her health to 10,000 buffed and then start working on that resilience; survivability is key and stacking damage is just going to make you into a glass cannon. You should also probably be working on your own PvP-specific set. Healing is also very different: focus on Prayer of Mending, Renew, Power Word: Shield, and Flash Heal when your partner drops Shadowform and heals. Mana efficiency isn’t as important as keeping everyone alive - Hobbes included!
From my experience, Spirit Bond is a bust. Fights just don’t last long enough to make it effective. Not that you need the tips, but make sure to use all of those skills that are normally ignored for raiding: Wingclip and Concussive Shot for reducing your opponents’ movement (and don’t be afraid to pick up Improved Concussive Shot!); stings to reduce mana, health, or prevent them from bandaging/drinking/healing; timely Aimed Shots to reduce healing efficiency; timely Intimidations to interrupt heals that might otherwise turn the tide of battle; and Arcane Shots to remove one beneficial mana effect. I see a lot of hunters in Arenas stick with the tried-and-true Steady/Auto shot rotation, but I found that the best hunters are ones that use all of their skills and don’t rely on shot rotations: to be honest, mana efficiency isn’t an issue here since 2v2 matches seem to go extremely fast.
Use what advice works well for you and disregard the rest as mindless ramblings. Congratulations and luck to you, Hobbes, and you Shadowpriesty friend!
The 2 posters above have some pretty accurate information. I would stress the importance of getting that priest to go discipline. You will do MUCH better, regardless of gear. I wouldn’t be surprised if you got to around the 1700s. At that point gear really starts to matter and that is where you begin facing the SL lock/War and resto druid combos.
i agree with lurker on the freeze trapping rogues. we can see when the hunter kneels down to place it, and we can strafe and pop clos before getting into range, ruining your cooldown. if you drop it before hand, we can see it and avoid it altogether. even if we do get caught, popping that trinket is only a split second away.
snake traps, however, prove to be much more difficult to deal with. along with the slowing and dot poisons (preventing restealth), the daze effect from having so many melee attackers is really annoying. aside from that, you can force the rogue to blow his cloak of shadows cooldown earlier than maybe he intended on, giving your spriest more value out of her mana spent on dots (as well as your own stings).
BRK - A lot of high-ranked teams will often flubb their rankings on purpose so that they can pwn lower-ranked teams. I think that is one of the reasons some of the Vengeful gear requires a particular ranking.
In other cases, they may have the gear and not the skills. You can have mediocre skills and still pwn a team if you have Gladiator gear and they have blues & greens. But, if you are both in equal gear, or they have slightly better and your skills are not top notch, it is you that gets pwned!
So, those are two reasons why teams could have great gear and crappy rankings.
Btw, I URGE every new 70 I know to get into an arena team for each arena config (2v2, 3v3, 5v5). Even if you lose every match, you still earn points and in 3 weeks, could be able to get a piece of Vengeful gear. The larger your team, the more points you earn.
