Rumblin’ and Stumblin’ Email Answerin’
“Dear BRK, I was on Drenden this afternoon with my low level toons (Gnekidgnome, Gnekidgnomet, and Gnekidgnomer) exploring in anticipation of the Gnaked Gnome race. I saw a query in the trade channel (!) asking how to get a pet. It was a lvl 2 hunter (doomed to be a huntard I fear).
“I did a whisper and explained that one needed to be lvl 10. They asked “but where do I get a pet” so I offered to lead them from Coldridge to Kharanos and the Hunter trainer on the hill there. So we arrive at the trainer, “Now what do I do?”
“Talk to him”
“But how do I get a pet?”
“You need to be level 10″
“But then what do I do?”
“Come here, all will be explained … just be sure to feed your pet once tamed”
Then I asked, “So have you ever heard of BigRedKitty?”
“No, what’s that”
“You should go to www.bigredkitty.net and see the How to Level a Hunter videos.”
“I just want a pet”
“Those videos will really help you level your hunter”
“But I just want a pet”
“My level 70 has learned a lot from BRK … you really should try the site”
“I just want a pet”
“So I left the party and went back to trying to find the shortest, non-fatal, path to the North Gate. I fear that you have another huntard coming up the ranks on Drenden … sorry about that but I tried. Mudge”

We’ve corresponded with Professor X before, really cool guy. And he’s a hunter, foshizzle. If we were going to the University of Y, we’d totally take one of his classes, even though we still believe in the Turtle Theory. (Turtles are dark matter; that’s how it all fits together.)
A quick Thank You to everybody who had suggestions on our arena spec. Thirty-seven varients of that means there’s no way we can reply to each of you individually, but know we’ve read your emails and are considering your words carefully. Except the people who suggested we go Marksmen. You guys are Banned. /huff
“Dear BRK, I currently am using herbalism and skinning as my money making professions but I have a few questions about how i should carry on. Should I go leatherworking and make armor that I will eventually no longer need since I can get my class tiers after raiding or should I go herbalism since it will save me money from having to buy potions and they are always needed by people who raid or so most other level 70 related things.
“I know it sounds like I have already made up my mind since I was negative about leatherworking and positive about herbalism but maybe you can enlighten me. Also, what level should I get either leatherworking or alchemy and when should I start working on leveling it up? Thanks in advance for your help, Jarhun and Spider (I so stole that name from you and even used it on the same pet [bellygrub])
“P.S. Sorry for stealing the name.”
If you have one toon and no other source of income - a rich buddy or buddyette - then we totally recommend sticking with the double-gathering all the way through getting your epic flying mount. BRKTestBed is level 36 and has had over 80g already doing nothing but skinning and mining.
Leatherworking is awesome in that you can make Tier 4-level gear for yourself and be ready to rock the casbah before setting foot into Karazhan. However, that gear comes with a price - your epic flying mount. It’ll cost you 2000-3000g to level that LW skill to 375 and make the four pieces of uberness that is high-end LW-gear, (chest, belt, and bracers from the trainer, boots from the AH.)
If you care about your 280% flying mount, and you really should, then stay with the money-making professions until your uber-flying needs are met.
“Dear BRK … I remember a while ago you were talking about a book idea that might go to print. As I would also like to write a book, or a collection of short stories, I have no idea how to get noticed or read by anyone or anything. I was hoping you would share how you got someone to hear your idea and the process you are or went through so I may attempt to do the same thing.
“Any help you can give would be appreciated and I thank you for your time, as I know it is very limited and precious. Dave.”
In case you didn’t notice, we have not posted a “THEY’RE GONNA PUBLISH OUR BOOK!” post. That’s because nobody has agreed to publish our book. Nobody, not a soul. We are hopeful, we are making blood sacrifices to the publishing gods, we are making promises to the editor that Mrs BRK won’t let us cash, but so far, bupkis.
How did we get the blog read? You mean aside from the stiff-arming and the cash payouts and the blackmail? Tell ya something, our first month of blogging, we had 2000 hits. We thought that was massive! We get 7000 hits per day now, not including RSS feeds and content-skimming websites, (Dante needs a new level of h3ll for those dirty &$*^#$~s!) We grew because people liked our writing.
Please note that we did not say we grew because our writing is good! Good or bad is irrelevant. Just because one is a good writer does not mean that one will get read, and just because one is “widely” read does not mean one’s writing is good. People watch soap operas for decades and that writing is crapola, Sports Night was canceled after, what, two seasons, and that was the best TV writing ever.
Frankly, we think people visit us because they just like saying “foshizzle”.
Question: does anybody have a WoW Non-Combat Pet Blog?
“Dear BRK, was just wondering if you had ever put together a recommended pre-Kara gear list. Paul.”
Yes we did! It isn’t published, but yes we did. /patselfonback
“Dear BRK, is it legal to train stealth as a gnome rogue before the race? Tom.”
Listen to us now and believe us later. No XP, no leveling before the race begins. No “exploratory” XP, either. If you discover a zone and get XP, you’ve violated the rules. If you find a Completely Redonkulous Tome of Stealthiness in the gnome starting circle, don’t touch it; no looting.
Many people derive extreme satisfaction from solving problems in unique and entertaining ways. We dig that, we understand. For the race, don’t try to finagle an advantage at the start. Obviously, developing a running-strategy is critical, (first person into the tunnel at the beginning is gonna be Trogg-poodoo,) but thinking that a small trick is going to save your level 3 gnome from the power that is a level 18 orc isn’t gonna happen.
Probably. /wink

Oh yes, those lowbie hunters. Sigh. I sent one of here to check out the movies the other day. He was wandering around Darkshore begging for someone to show him how to feed his pet. I just wish there had been something like this when I first started my hunter. Thanks so much.
“BRKTestBed is level 36 and has had over 80g already doing nothing but skinning and mining.”
My hunter had more than that doing Skinning, Leather-working, and recipe selling. BRK aside, you can make money at _anything_ if you are willing to put work into it. I bet you could make your mount money on time, running enchanting and engineering (or no professions at all).
If what you really care about is gold, the auction house is the way to go (IMHO). I know level 20ish characters who could afford an epic flying mount
The best way is to do something you enjoy. If herbalism is boring to you, you won’t do it, and won’t make money at it.

Nonsense. Even if leatherworking costs 2500 gold, and gives nothing back, all it would do is delay your epic flying mount. But, if all that leatherworking sped up your leveling by the same amount then it would be worth it. And I guarantee no one knows the answer to that question.
Thank You Kindly,
Corwyn
gotta love the new huntards, but a class on dark matter turtles would be nice
Not a blog, but it’s the best source on non-combat pets I’ve found.

In response to the “leatherworking can help you level” comment above:
1) take skinning
2) check recipes for what you want and get extra mats
3) have some poor sap that took leatherworking make the gear you want
4) PROFIT!
Not only will you get the exact same gear that way, but you
- avoid having to find/buy the recipies
- don’t have to make 10 of something else to get the necessary skill-ups
- don’t have to mess with selling 10 of the previously mentioned useless gear
- the poor misguided LW will thank you for it
- AND you get to keep all the money from selling the extra skins.
Can you make money at crafting? Yes, but you have to work at it, while gathering professions are pure profit. There are other reasons to take crafting professions: BoP recipes, roleplaying, helping lowbies/alts, but making money isn’t one of them.
If you want g with minimum fuss, take gathering.
Hoi Hoi BRK,
love the blog. Your obviously one of those people whos brains are cracked/warped in that special way that allows you to impart information while maintaining a consistent levl of humor (shame i couldnt say the same about former teachers/lecturers….i might of got better grades…/sigh)
I wanted to drop you an email (i dont even know if you “do” emails) but being clueless I couldnt find any links. So thought I’d propose a question here…feel free to ignore/laugh until your sides hurt/send me threatening emails saying not to contact you again.
What I wanted to ask about was shot rotations. I have kara lvl gear and hold my own against locks, mages/ etc dps wise….but I find myself lagging behind other, similarly geared, hunters. And i suspect that my shot rotation may be behind it. I know you’ve covered this before but I was wondering if you had any thoughts on a run of the mill, suits all types rotation that works well? (obviously this isnt always the case, depending on weapon speeds, etc).
I’m a BM hunter with a similar build to your own and I weave a auto-steady rotation spamming rapid killing, trinkets, etc as soon as the cooldowns allow. Wondered if you have any advice?
Apologies for the incoherent ramblings.
Regarding the question on stealth, it’s a trainable skill at level 1.
I believe you could sell all your starting gear to get the 10c to train stealth without gaining any xp…
If dark matter = turtles, then what does dark energy = ?
Turtle Soup, duh.
No XP, no leveling before the race begins.
So, is there no way to suffer death before the race begins?
Beaker, you dont use shot rotations in arena unless the opponents are terminally stupid (an often fatal disease). If you plant and do your auto/steady/arcane you will blow anything out of the sky. But the good teams wont let you do that. Learn to kite with frost or snake trap, improved wingclip, concussion shot, scatter shot, ec. Yes, MM/SV is undoubtedly better for arena than the usual BM/MM spec. I’ve tried both. The key for us is mobility and appropriate targetting. Too often I’d start to hammer on one member, while my paly teammate eats it in the face, then realize that a) both opps have full mana and health and b) i’m dead. Choose the right target will make a huge diff, and making sure both of you go after same target.
Oh come on BRK, we know hobbes would hate you, but those 4k crits on warlocks are just so much more fun. Don’t be so closed minded and give MM a try for a week in arena and see how it works.
Oh and check out a guy named Megatf (you will see him sitting on top of the world right here http://www.sk-gaming.com/arena/player ), and get one of your million droods to go 2v2 with you
Ferocious Bite sometimes blogs about her non-combat pet adventures.
BRK, I thought you HAD written a recommended list of pre-Kara gear, here:
http://www.wowinsider.com/2007/09/12/bigredkitty-gear-up-for-karazhan/
BRK, the world is a disc carried by 4 elephants who stand on the back of a giant turtle named A’Tuin who travels slowly through space. There is an edge which you will fall off if you go far enough but we haven’t, although isn’t Voyager gone, so maybe it did fall off the edge.
If you don’t believe me, check this out, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Pratchett
He knows all.
“Yes we did! It isn’t published, but yes we did. /patselfonback”
its that;
/pat self on back …or /pats elf on back???
cause i’m an elf and i sent you screenies….lol
Hey BRK,
I’m not afraid of being the first level 1 gnome through the trogg tunnel on Gnaked Gnome Race Day (though I doubt I will be) - I ran a level 1 mage gnome through there the other day, no problems. Those troggs don’t hit too hard and they reset fast.
The wetlands, on the other hand, I plan to be right in the middle of a big group of screaming gnaked gnomes and thinking invisible really hard…
