This Land Was Made for Gruul and Me

guthrie.jpg“Dear BRK, [I] haven’t seen the Gruul movie posted yet and my guild is going to start Gruul soon, so I had a question about the advice in [a] strategy [that] was recently posted on our guild site.

“The 7th line under process says, ‘Pets can be affected by Shatter and thus should not be used. Phase-Shifted imps are not affected.’ Tell me it isn’t so. Riemann should totally get to chew on Gruul, shouldn’t he? Cauchy-Riemann”

Yup, those imps are chunked under Gruul’s patootie to provide extra health to your tanks and they’re totally happy there. Sorry, but that’s just a fact.

But Dr. W, you can absolutely disregard that hunter-pet clap-trap. Hunter-pets rock on Gruul as they are immune to Shatter, foshizzle! No pet of ours, or any pet we know, has ever taken or dealt damage because of Shatter.

However, they are most definitely not immune to Cave-Ins. Can pets die from Cave-Ins? You bet. Can a nice, steady stream of Mend Pet keep your pet cooking through Cave-Ins? Darn tootin’. Will a priest’s frisbie-heal also work wonders on your pet? Absopivly, bo-diddly. Gruul is no big deal for hunter pets; don’t freak out. If you have extra pet-talent points to grab some extra armor, that’ll help mitigate the Cave-In damage, but it’s not that important.

You know who your pet really needs to worry about in Gruuls? Krosh. That fire-aura monster ignores our Fire Resistance and will burn your cuddly-wuddly in about three seconds if he’s not properly controlled. Do not ever let your pet near Krosh; Improved Mend Pet won’t do squat.

Also, Maulgar’s Whirlwind will stomp your pet flat. Be sure to recall your pet when Maulgar starts spinning and doing his pirouettes.

But once you get through Maulgar’s gangster-party, Gruul is quite pet-friendly. Get in there and have fun.

Pets under effect of Bestial Wrath are immune to Kroshs AOE.
Just be sure to pull the Pet back when it fades.

Also, don’t forget that the phat Chain Healz from your friendly neighborhood Resto Shaman will hit your pet if in need and range.

I hardly use my pet on High King. There’s so many point-blank moves and because I’m usually tanking the nature dude, I can’t pay attention to my pet.

On Gruul, using a pet is easy. Just watch out for the cave-in debuff next to your pets health bar. On full health, my pet could probably last ~10secs under a cave-in, so you have a fair bit of warning.

Tee hee, I didn’t know about cave-ins on pets, and so have never recalled or healed on Gruul! But DisPater chews on Gruul all the way through. Guild got him down first time the other night, twelfth growth. I was second on DPS list too ;) not bad for a mere (odd spec) MM…..behind an Epic’d up Rogue.

One question too. I got Romulo’s poison thingy the other night as well and have it equipped for the sweeet +35 hit. But is it any good for Hunters otherwise / how often does it proc? (I got it for minimum DKP and no other bids, so wasn’t expecting to win!).

Are they only immune to the slowing debuff (”XXX is afflicted by Blast Wave”) or damage from the Blast Wave as well? Me thinks the former.

On full health, my pet could probably last ~10secs under a cave-in, so you have a fair bit of warning.

Don’t forget that damage from Cave-ins also noticably increases with Gruul’s stacking Grows.

Pets definately do not take damage from shatter. Take them. My guild has been 1 shoting gruul for the last three months. All the hunters always have their pets regardless of build.

Worst thing you have to do is pull them out now and again drop a bandage and mend pet, back in they go. Pulling them out now and again helps too with the new ‘get behind the mob feature’ blizzard implemented. I find now and again mine gets out of mend pet range. Recalling it and sending it back in helps correct that if at least only temporary.

Every bit of information in this post? Listen to it. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just plain wrong.

Oh! I think what this post really emphasizes most is the need to spec your pet for each instance you are doing. On Gruul, I go full out armor/health, skip resistances and pick up the usual dps talents and have no trouble whatsoever keeping klaatu up during the fight.

Last night on VR, I re-learned the value of this because I got home late and didn’t have time to pick up some Arcane Resistance for my pet and he got wailed on during the fight.
