PvP Mania and a Hot Foot
Did a premade AV with the guild, we kicked patootie and won! Loads of fun and we broke the 25,000 honor kills mark finally. We also did our ten 2v2 matches and are, for the most part, pleased with our personal progress. Except for our occasional massive noobishness.
Match 1. Win, Combat Rogue and Demon Warlock, BEM. Smoosh the warlock, ignore the Felguard, partner survived the rogue’s initial attack. Nice start.
Match 2. Loss, BM Hunter and 34/27 Mage, BEM. Attacked the hunter, not the mage. Dumb.
Match 3. Loss, Subtlety Rogue and Demon Warlock, Nagrand. Rogue two-shot Bela, game over. Sheesh.
Match 4. Loss! BM Hunter and Resto Druid, BEM. We couldn’t target anything; we honked up. Kept targeting our partner, then the flag got in our way. Don’t ask how! Just a total noob-job by us. Sad, really sad, and our first three-loss streak.
Bela: “It’s OK.”
BRK: “Gonna chunk this computer into the pool!!”
Match 5. Win, Holy Pally and Ret Pally, BEM.
BRK: “THEY’RE NOT DYING, D@MNIT!!”
Bela: “Um, they’re both almost out of mana.”
BRK: “Oh. Look at that.”
Bela: “That’s what happens with two mana drains.”
BRK: silence, not gonna say we forgot to Viper Sting…
Match 6. Win, Subtlety Rogue and Enhancement Shaman, Ruins. Trapped the rogue, ate the Shaman without a second thought. It felt like a textbook treatise of how to beat a rogue-anything team, assuming the rogue cannot trinket out of the trap. Of course, they almost always have a trinket, don’t they.
Match 7. Loss, BM Hunter and 0/31/30 Rogue, BEM. Their hunter down, Bela down, we kited that *$&%* rogue and were going to deliver the killing Arcane Shot when he killed us with a thrown weapon. A THROWN WEAPON! /sulk
Match 8. Loss, same as Match 7, BEM. We were so angry about the axe he hit us with, we noobed it up again and couldn’t target anything. Keeping a cool head is critical and we didn’t. Lesson learned.
Match 9. Win, Holy Pally and Ret Pally, not the same guys as Match 5 actually, Ruins. Mana burn and Viper Sting - we remembered! - FTW.
Match 10. Win, BM Hunter and Holy Pally, Ruins. NE Hunter had a scorpid. We, a Dwarf Hunter, have Stoneform FTW. Killed the hunter, Mana Burn and Viper Sting to the end.
Can we have five more points for Improved Stings, please?
We’re 5-5 tonight, but on a two-match winning streak. Let’s keep going!
Match 11. Win, Feral Druid and Assass Rogue, BEM. Love the double-stealthers. We’re starting to use Snake Traps against these guys and it totally worked. Used Track Hidden to find the cat-druid, we went for him. Rogue tried to get Bela, snakes did their job, and Bela kited the rogue while we ate the druid.
Can we have another set of talent points to get Clever Traps, please?
Match 12. Win! BM Hunter and MM Hunter.
BRK: “Gonna nuke that MM hunter first. /snarl “
Bela: “Go right ahead puddin’-head.” (At least it sounded like puddin’ head; we don’t have a transcript to verify.)
MM Hunter destoyed, BM pet destroyed for good measure, then killed the hunter. Very satisfying. We would much rather face a BM/MM than a BM/BM, that’s for sure. Our first four-game winning streak, do we get up from the table or try our luck one more time…
Match 13. Loss, Subtlety Rogue and Frost Mage, Nagrand. Didn’t kill the elemental. Mage kept running around the pillars and out of our LoS, but the elemental shot us through the pillars. OK, lesson learned; we’re a noob.
We installed and tested the addon Proximo tonight. We won’t go back to the arena without it, very nice piece of work. Of course, next time we won’t leave it at the top of the screen where it interferes without our targeting, (we’re a noob).
So we went 7-6 on the first night after the arena reset. We were expecting to face much tougher competition than previously and it didn’t really happen. The three losses in a row were not fun, but the four wins in a row made the night memorable.
And to cap the post off, here’s a screenshot of us preening it up in the Stormwind battlemaster area, looking regal and quite tall.

The number of mages that let me stroll over and slaughter their elemental always boggles my mind. The number that immediately resummon him with expectation that the new one isn’t gonna go the way of the first in short order is no less shocking.
Just something about killing mages just makes me happy.
You’ve got to admire a Rogue that finishes the job with a throwing weapon. That’s a player using EVERY trick in their book.
Was that axe perhaps a deadly throw? Those really hurt, especially if they’ve got a few combo points on you. I do arenas with my hunter and I also have a rogue alt and I love deadly throw.
Proximo is a must have. Love it. But I wish it were easier to move around/configure.
I love/hate snake traps. I use them almost exclusively in arenas with my hunter. The exceptions being against mages and pallies. Their aoe makes quick work of them. My rogue hates them.
P.S. There’s nothing like pvp to get the blood pumping and the mouse banging on the desk after a flubbed up performance on my part. My wife frequently yells out, “Does that really help?”
so *that’s* what you were doing spamming salute on the candelabra…
anyhow, I did *NOT* call you puddin’-head =p
You were warned in the last post to kill the mage’s elemental first -_- You’ll remember next time, I’d bet
BRK I too am on a 2v2 with a spriest, when we first started playing together we rocked almost every team we faced. Lately its been a hit or miss. We both have changed guilds from and with a new raiding schedule its been tough to do as many games as we did before. I have to say the worst combos so far have been resto druid/warrior, spriest/lock, lock/lock with he lock /lock combo being demo/sl/sl. Most of the time when we lose its just because of a complete noobed up fight.
I also have a mage on the team and lastnight we had a very funny fight with a rogue/priest combo. My partner and I was focusing on the priest I summoned the ele and it was pounding on the priest when Iheard the stealth sound and blinked in close tot he priest. Noticed my ele wasnt casting and flipped the cam to see the rogue killing my ele while my partner and I just focused on the priest. I luaghed so hard I almost couldnt fight the rogue because of the tears. I understand you dont wanna let th ele pound away but you also dont wanna let your partner get focused while you kill a pet :P.
Ok, just so’s you know…
I ~love~ reading your blog.
You are one hilarious fellow and now my students are looking at me funny because I actually laughed aloud while they’re taking a test.
Anyway, thanks!
deadly throw ftw. cant even tell you how many killing blows i get when it crits for 1200-1500. not to mention it has the same effect as kick when using the gladiators gloves (interrupts a cast and locks that school for 5 seconds).
said it before and again, snake traps > ice traps against rogues, especially sub rogues. every time. youre going to force the rogue either to use precious cooldowns (clos, prep, evasion, shs…or some combination thereof) or try and outlast the effect. either way, he gets poisoned and dazed and you have a chance to get away.
also recall your pet to attack on him. most hunters do not do this, and the daze effect from ignoring melee hits is going to snare him good = better kiting. you can also force him to use his vanish earlier than he may have liked to remove the pet, as well.
Thanks for the reports BRK. I have just started doing arena myself. I wish I was having the luck you are, but my teams are not very good ATM. But that is partially my fault as I am doing arena with my PvE spec and I have little PvP gear on my hunter. Your comments and the discussion are giving me some great suggestions.
I rarely use Freezing Trap in arenas. They always trinket out of it. Gratz on the wins and for trying arena in the first place =)
Love it, love it!
Keep it up BRK,
That’s a good point about frost trap. I have been using mainly so my squishie team mates can kite any melee attacking them into it. I think I’ll be trying snakes now though if we identify a rogue opponent.
One of the things I love about PVP and arena is how it really makes you consider different abilities and forces you to get versatile. Well if you wanna win that is
We have a mage in our guild named Blastwave that has over 100K lifetime kills and in one match, I watched him tally 95 HKs and 49 KBs. He’s a monster.
arcane explosion spam ftw. not really skill imo, just spamming an instant cast heavy damage aoe until someone kills you. although i wish more alliance mages would do this when defending or capping flags/towers…
FYI :
S2 gear will be sold at the pvp vendors when S4 comes out, so save your points!!
The title of this post nearly gave me a heart attack: “No, don’t tell your readers to PvP me! They’re just crazy enough to do it!” My own fault for choosing my name, I suppose. :>
This has nothing to do with the topic at hand, but the current Topic count on the forums is 666….
oooooo spooky!!
Just wait til you do some 5v5 and stumble upon the all pally team. There is simply nothing more frustrating than that!
They hit for crap and just sit there and regen mana while you burn yours trying to burn theirs down! Gah! First time I ran across these buggers the fight lasted almost 15 minutes and then our druid went cat and disappeared just to piss them off for a good 5 minutes.
Their team name? Neverending Battle on battlegroup Cyclone. Fear them!
You’ll notice our 162 HKs? That’s just that one AV. We came in 5 minutes late, too.
Gratz on the 25K HK mark BRK. For the last three years I have about 78K HK (I’ve slowed down quite a bit the last year only about 5K HK this year), but back then I was a BG nut and a MM with an avg night of about 75 to 100 Hard Kills (not the group kills Honor Kills by the end of the night that would be about 1K to 1.5K) nightly, and I mean nightly. I was next on the Feild Marshal list back when you had to grind for your rank, before they change the ranking system. I even to a day of vacation on a monday to try to bang it up before the change. Thank god they got rid of that crazy way of getting a ranking system. I do wish they do bring something back about getting the ranks name back but without the grinding. I would really like to see maybe the Cmdrs, FM and GFM take the Battle Master Lead and really control the AV,s AB,s and WSG and based on you lead (and wins) you should be able to progress upward in rank.
Gratz on wining you AV BG too. Lately the Horde has seem to find a way to win (they own the choke point IB) and bring down Belinda (-100 reserves right there) and they Defend Galv all at the same time and just grind down our reserves without even getting Vann down. The last AV BG weekend, the AV’s I was in we didnt win one BG all weekend long :(.
Yeah you try to get in a 5v5 team, it will help you in points and you can get better PvP gear faster.
Cheers and Keep wining dude!
