BRK Hunter Guide Movie - The Jump Shot
Is any director ever fully done with a movie? No, but unless they push their movie out the door, they don’t make any money. We’re not here to make buckets of moolah, but we do want to check some things off our BRK To Do List.
This movie is not as perfect as we’d like, but we’re gonna put it out there so you have something to look at and comment about. Let’s go!
To answer some of your questions, we are using the 4-key for our Arcane Shot, 5-key for Concussive Shot, and 7-key for Serpent Sting (even though we are using Scorpid Sting in the movie by accident).
Being a shot-clicker will make Jump Shooting basically impossible unless you set Auto Run on. But if you’re the greatest mouser on the planet and can jump shot by clicking, more power to you. We don’t recommend it, though. The method we’d prefer you use is: Hand on mouse and click both buttons to run/turn, while using your free hand to select shots with keys. This allows you to run, control your direction, and control the elevation of the camera.
You do not need a 28-button mouse do Jump Shot. You can do this, we promise, but it does take practice.
Edit: Download the full-sized (65.1MB) movie here.

Hey BRK! Its Bagel. I have learned another great hunter tip from the great BRK.
TYVM!
I had problems playing this video. It was as if two of them downloaded, one about 15 seconds after the second one. I can follow what you’re saying about 75% of the time. It’s too late to look at it again so I’ll postpone this until tomorrow before setting out with a bunch of guildies to finish SMV quests. I’m sure there’s a wealth of info here as always.
nice vid always wondered how to spin back around in mid air now I know thanks
Ok- so why is jump-turn-shoot-turnback BETTER than jump-tuen-shot-keep turning? I’m not sure that i see the difference provided the player has enough mouse control to do either. (hehe…mouse control. sounds dirty…)
ALSO-
I have a huge problem. HUGE. I mean gi-nor-gantic. IT’s bad. SO- I don’t like going… mouse over shot, click, find next one…click. … I like being hotkeyed to EVERYTHING! as a result, i have my right hand on the mouse to do all my moving (which means I can’t strafe , bad hunter /whacks nose) with my mouse, and all my hotkeying with my left hand. I also hate modifiers. short of getting an uber mouse with a gazillion keys that allows me to strafe, shoot, loot and pet my scorpid at the same time… how do I strafe and mouse turn at the same time? I don’t have 3 hands. I’m really looking for a solution here.
right now all my movement keys are in my Num pad so I can easily switch from mouse to keys, but i still can’t do both at the same time… and IF i were to switch it to normal, what the hell are you using to fire the shot? I’m confused. help!
(oh- and THE REAL CHUCK (not the crappy new non-combat pet) has a blog. check it. )

Excellent work on that movie, I’m learning much from your hunter guide movies, and this totally cleared up anything that I was confused about regarding jump shots prior to watching this movie. I commend you on a job well done.
I have a useful trick for this.
I mapped my autorun to the “R” key.
This is especially useful for kiting folks in battlegrounds.
When I have my target’s attention, I just hit R to autorun, steer with my mouse or WASD, and when needed, tap space, and do a quick 360 spin. In the middle of the spin, hit the appropriate hotkey. Just practice a couple times doing the 360 to make sure you can do it without breaking your stride and you’re close to mastering the jump shot. I noticed BRK tends to break his stride a couple times in this vid, and my trick might help remedy that just a little.
It may also be due to his stout stature, but I couldn’t say for certain. Nelfs get big air.
I failed to mention that the 360 spin is of course done with the mouse and not the “A or D” keys. It needs to be quick enough to get all the way around before you land.
Wonderful movie. I laughed a few times at the introduction, especially with the unintended introduction of the Fel Reaver. :3 Very well explained. Unfortunately, I had to learn all of this about the jump shot myself… as opposed to shooting until the mob was in my face and meleeing it down. (Only for level 1-10 though. Then I get a Growling pet)
I personally use the arrow keys and spin the mouse. I’m very liable to let my hand stray if I use the letters to move about and hit the wrong keys.
Thanks for posting this. I’ve been trying to get this technique down with pve practice, but I’ve really been struggling with it in pvp situations. The information about the angles definitely helps. Thanks again!
Great movie as always BRK. It showed me that what I consider a jump shot is, indeed, a jumpshot. Usually though I use it after Intimidate so I can start with an Arcane and shoot off an Auto right as I land, so I haven’t had much practice kiting with it.
The angles is good to know for me too, the few times I tried a kiting jump shot I couldn’t spin back around in time to keep going the direction I started in. I was spinning all the way around using my mouse, and by that time I’d be at the top of my jump. Not enough time to realign for landing.
For reference, I remapped my keys so that A and D are my strafes, add a shift to turn, S is my Steady Shot (shift S for back) and my Q/Shift Q is Mend/Rez Pet and E/Shift E is Intimidate/Bestial Wrath. Being that I’m lazy and got a kicking gamer mouse with my computer, I use the top thumb button for Arcane, Shift thumb (which is considered delete) for Multi, and bottom/shift bottom for Mark/Pet attack.
Works pretty well I must say.
The reason jumping, turning one way, firing, and turning back works better than jumping, turning 360º and firing in the middle is that you don’t have to travel in as much of an arc. You don’t need to turn 180º to shoot the mob behind you, when turning just over 90º will do. So, if you jump, and turn anti-clockwise 100º, fire, and turn clockwise 100º, you’ve only needed the time to turn through 200º, rather than 360º.
When I was working on getting this technique down, I found that rather than trying to adjust how much I moved my wrist to turn the right distance with the mouse, it was easier to adjust the mouse sensitivity so that the quick side twitch I made with my wrist turned me far enough to snap off a shot.
@ Xanthelei
Now THAT is what I need… one of dem gamer micey things. that would be wonderful. Laziness in gaming is a good thing because it creates a void that effectiveness or greater skill must fill.
play smarter not harder right?
I never use the turn keys to turn, probably owing to my background with first person shooters such as CS/HL/UT/etc. Those skills are also handy with jump shots as turning and aiming is key in those games (not so much aiming as a hunter).
@ those who think 360 degrees is better, I think it’s much easier to move the mouse left and then right (or vice versa) to it’s original spot before the jump shot than it is to move it to a new spot to complete a 360 turn. Try it out and find what works best.
A good tip for jump shots / kiting is to send your pet in as well, with growl OFF so that it won’t draw aggro, yet still do damage. Also for kiting it can help to have aspect of the cheetah on.
@ Ailish - I agree w/ the angles. You don’t have to turn 180 to get the shot off, just partially (though it is good to see where / how far back the mob is).
Finally, it’s good to have your shots bound to a key rather than click. I couldn’t imagine trying to jump shot and click. My shots used for jumpshots are on keys 3,4, and 6 - all reachable with the left hand.
Woot! Thank you for posting this. I am modifying it a little to suit how I play, then practice, practice, practice!
what I found worked easier for me was - I strafe away from my prey, that way, if you’re strafing away in straight line from that mob/warr/rogue, you’re already “turned” 90º, and all you need to do is little mouse adjustment to brake it into 91+º - quick arcane/any-sting/concuss, turn back those 1+º and continue running away, simple strafing (Q or E keys) travel speed is the same as normal running
The problem with strafing is that it’s harder to make fine turning movements if you are kiting along a road, or needing to look ahead and avoid/engage other enemies.
This is probably a stupid question. But are you using hotkeys or clicking your shots as you jump?
I’m a clicker, and I don’t see how I could possibly use the mouse to turn and click the shots at the same time.
No, it would be next to impossible to do a jumpshot as a clicker. You would need to have insane reactions to pull that off. You need some sort of keybinding for this.
Personally I have done away with the stranfekeys. I guess it is also my old FPS habits jumping at me. Instead I use the A and D keys while holding the right mousebutton. Not really superior, but it opens up two keys within very easy reach, one of which is in fact Arcane Shot.
Also something I have practiced without ever really thinking about it is to do a half-jumpshot in the end. Often in PvP, and sometimes in PvE, you can end up in a situation where you can’t get away anymore, and your instants are on CD. That is when I jump-turn-land and instantly fire off an auto and from there depending on the range I will use other stuff. No point in actually turning once I have landed. Besides it looks cool to be flying backwards in the air.
Also I’m a turn-turn back jumpshotter. I just prefer to get my mouse back to the original position, I might need to maneuver around when I land, and then it wouldn’t do me very well if my mouse happened to be too far to one side. Never really don’t the full turn, never felt the need for it.
So you spent a minute+ on explaining something you also admit we already know what you’re talking about. xD
This is exactly why I love ya, BRK.
I figured the Jump Shot and Immediate Return out by myself, but seeing someone else doing it and explaining it is very nice. Thanks a lot. ♥
“Yay, Jump & Turn! Ain’t that cool!”
~Iwan & Pjotr
See I have this horrible awful confession to make; that is to say, the jump-shot is my biggest Hunter’s Achilles’ Heel.
Clearly I need much, much more practice, after seeing this movie…
Can you post a downloadable version?
Download or it didn’t happen…
I can’t believe you rotate LEFT on a jump shot. I can’t believe it.
I think we need to see other hunters.
Ah, the jump shot, one of the most used ‘tricks’ a hunter has, taught by the merciless hands of Artorius the Doombringer and used , well, pretty much all the time since. More recent uses for it? How about keeping the attention of Ghouls you’re kiting around Hyjal Summit, or soloing Ulveros, the big green kitteh of Shadowmoon Valley.
If stuntin’ the full 360 is giving you RSI before your time, don’t forget that you can fire ‘behind’ you from just over 90 degrees away, not the full 180. So you can run sideways at full speed and use little twitches towards your target of 10-20 degrees or so.
Oh, and try to make sure your key bindings are sensible. My conc shot tends to live on control-7 for historical reasons, which is reasonably challenging to reach whilst jumping
Oh, and spinning clockwise whilst jumping is the only conceivable option. Jumping left? That’s just peculiar
You use the mouse to move? I find that my camera control is best if I’m not doing anything with the mouse other than turning. In a short-term kiting situation I tend to strafe away from the target (usually with the target on my left shoulder) using the D key (I rebound A and D to strafe and use Q and E for actual skills).
I pretty much only play in battlegrounds and I find that keeping an eye on the target as much as possible is far more important than watching the road.
I also take advantage of my forward momentum while jumping to let go of the strafe key and move my left hand over a few keys to tap 3, 5, or 6 for arcane, conc, or serpent while doing the right-hand mouse turn-towards/turn-back. After the shot is off I get my finger back on the strafe key before I land with no loss of forward speed.
Am I crazy? I dunno… it works.
I like to move with my right hand on the arrow keys, left on the number keys. If I can avoid the mouse entirely, I’m good.
I play mostly on a laptop and moving my hand all the way over to the mouse is annoying, so I hardly ever even hook the mouse up when playing on it. As a consequence I have a jump-shot-like move, but it’s pretty pathetic looking.
Time to hook up the mouse again.
Nice video BRK.
A quick comment on your poll. After the S3 axe I’d get the helmet. It’s a huge upgrade over T4 for raiding and Maulgaur’s for PvP. Nicely itemized, for PvP gear. I’d trade it’s resilance for some more AP on PvE gear, but I guess that’s what BT is for.
Serpula and I are still saving for it, but we should have it soon.
Oh, any chance we can see some TK/SSC boss videos now that you guys are moving that way?
Finally, we’re curious what you think of a 3:2 shot rotation with a slower weapon. Granted you don’t have to worry about that with your beautiful gun, but for those of us who don’t have your luck with drops …
First and foremost, amazing guide there is always something new. For starting out learning the jump shot, i noticed it was easier to start using strafe and turning slightly to figure out how wide the angle of being able to get the shots off is. Then once you get that down then move up and start running straight away and do the full jump shots. Once you get good at that, slap on aspect of the cheetah and practice some more. It takes time and practice but it is a hunters best friend once it its learned. Awesome skill for both PVP and PVE.
(note: it applies to other classes as well that have instant cast abilities. so its not just for hunters. just an idea for any of your alts.)
@Pike
I, too, am plagued by this manouver. I have lived my entire hunter existence without completing one successful jump shot. Such is the sacrafice of a click-shooter.
So, coming from a FPS background I have always used wasd (a and d for strafing, not turning) for movement and the mouse for turning. I’ve heard from many sources how much more wonderful “mouse-only” moving is, but I’ve yet to have anyone actually provide the bindings they use… I guess my main question is, how do you guys strafe when using only a mouse for movement?
I’m quite surprised that so many find this difficult. I’m going to count myself lucky in that its never been a problem for me and just very natural.
@chorius - the easiest way to have “mouse-only” moving requires having a gaming mouse with atleast 4 buttons. I have the logitech 8 button mouse and it makes that possible.
top thumb button - strafe left
bottom thumb button - strafe right
left click - back
Left and Right click - forward
right click - camera
Noob question but how are you spinning with any degree of accuarcy?
I spin with a quick flick of the wrist and even with my mouse sentativty done low I have no real control on how much i spin by?
Am I doing this horribly wrong?
I, too, spin counter-clockwise =D
I have never done this or many other Hunter manuevers (such as kiting). I am new to WOW and FPS type games as well.
Hey dude thx for this tip
Im going to try it… Btw how do u get a pet?(Im new to WoW :P)
Dijin, just think of it as turning your character around. Don’t think of it as a “spin” because you want it to be a controlled turn. Turn around, then turn back in midair. Practice to see how quickly you can turn 180 degrees just standing still and still maintain control.
These folks are right about not needing to turn a 360 like i had suggested. Definitely just turn far enough to fire off the shot. But I still think using “R” to set yourself to auto-run makes things a lot easier. Your only concern then should be controlling your turn and hitting that hotkey to fire the shot.
I have a question? I usually do the arcane shot, and all of the other instance but do you do a jump shot with just auto shot in addition to the others or is it a strictly instant spell move?
I did it, I did it, I did it….once.
I ran and jumped, turned, turned back and kept running in the right direction. Now if I can just do it again. And then get the shot in there. So I still haven’t actually done a jump-SHOT yet.
I play mostly on an older iBook, and occasionally on my husband’s newer MacBook. I’ve been using the trackpad and arrow keys for over a year to move around. We finally got a wireless mouse last month, but I feel like a retard when I use it. I keep running into walls. Also I don’t think I have the mouse configured right since I can’t seem to interact with anything.
Don’t you just love all the help you get when you are trying to practice?
The only problem I have is that my camera tends to tilt toward the ground or sky because I seem to move the mouse up or down as I turn. Is there a way to prevent the camera from doing this or do I just need to get a steadier hand?
And as always thanks for the hard work BRK.

BigRedKitty - I saw this screencasting software this morning, and it looks like it’d be perfect for your making instructional videos - in their promo video, there’s even some Lvl 19 Dranei action happening!

Enlightenment! Thank you.
Nice stuff.
But out of curiosity, practically every “tip” you are giving is something every hunter should know out of common sense. If someone needs to be “taught” how to do such stuff with a website or something, they shouldn’t be playing hunters ..
LOL @ 2:15 : Fel Reaver growls and BRK spins the camera to check his 6 and the Fel Reaver’s 20
I definitely enjoyed this tutorial, but I do have on very particular question regarding the use of the mouse. I use a laptop to play and have a mousepad, not a mouse. I very rarely use the mousepad except when needed. is it possible to do it with only the keyboard and not the mouse? as accustomed as i am to using only the keyboard in combat, i think the addition of the mousepad for this would be insanely more difficult than it would be with a mouse on a PC.
Ok I guess, although a real BM hunter would’ve pulled out the big red kitty and opened a can of whoopass on that fel reaver
@Rotting Rogue, I don’t think it is possible without a mouse. The keyboard has a fixed turn speed, whereas with the mouse you can turn much faster mid-air.
@Vix
Exactly. All it is is a mouse with two thumb buttons, so something similar probably isn’t that expensive to get. I highly recommend it for people who just can’t reach a ton of keys with their right hand because, like me, they still rely somewhat on that hand for movement.
@Newt
The basic movement stuff, sure, I’ll agree with. That’s probably just BRK making sure aaaaall the bases are covered, as he usually does. (That’s what makes him such a good teacher!) As for the jump shot itself, that’s not as intuitive. I started doing a jump-turn-shot at about 50 simply because it was a way I could get off both an instant and an Auto in the shortest amount of time after someone grabbed aggro from me. The degrees makes an actual jump shot harder, because you don’t know how far you HAVE to turn to do it. That info alone makes this video worth while to watch. Seeing someone else do what I’ve been doing is a nice pat on the back for figuring it out. Meanwhile, someone int he 20s can learn to do this now, rather than develop it much later after many instances.
Oook, so everyone’s praising you for this little video clip…
Not saying I didn’t enjoy watching it, but WHY is the ‘jump shot’ so cool or important? What’s the deal?
No, seriously. I’d really like to know why you all think this seems to be so important to us hunters?
To me it looks as if it would be useful for kiting and kiting only. (And this can be done without using the jump shot.)
Another problem for me is that it’s sometimes veeery hard to hear what you’re saying. Perhaps it’s just your accent, but it’s really ’slurry’. :-/
The Jump Shot is important because hunters operate best “at range”. Getting away from your enemy is one action, shooting your enemy is a second. The Jump Shot is the implementation of both of these actions at the same time.
Yes, you can survive PvE without it. Going into PvP without it? You’re crippling yourself. We are trying to remember to record some of our PvP stuff so you can see it in action there.
Slurry? Maybe we need an external mic. /hmm
The video plays nicely and is entertaining, but isn’t what I need as a jump-shot tutorial. I know what it means to jump and shoot in mid-air, and OK, there’s a video of BRK doing it, just like the hunters who kill me when I play. The video that would help ME learn to do it wouldn’t be a WoW video capture. It would be a home movie of a player that showed what they were doing with the mouse and keyboard, monitor visible as they jumped and turned, and with the voice-over describing what they were doing with their fingers rather than which shot was being fired.
I agree with Alan. I appreciate seeing PRK performing the move on the screen, but it would be much more helpful to see how it is performed using the keyboard and mouse. How anyone could think a jumpshot is ‘intuitive’ for a hunter is beyond me. If that is the case every class with instant ranged damage should be doing it. Of course I have not done PVP yet, so maybe all other classes are doing a jumpshot as well. Anyway lots of good information from the movie and the comments. Thanks
Seems to have a bit of a disconnect to me. First half talks about moving with buttons. Second half talks about jump shotting with mouse movements. It would be nice to describe and show mouse movements in between. Otherwise, I think it will more confuse than enlighten a total newbie.
Thank You Kindly,
Corwyn
BRK - you sound very much like Bob Ross from the old Joy Of Painting videos. I kept expecting to hear you say that there are only happy accidents and that every tree needed a friend. Love the videos.
[...] If you haven’t learnt how to do damage whilst moving, this is the fight for you to learn. You could do a lot worse than starting with BRK’s jumpshot videos. [...]
Sorry for the off-topic bit, but I wandered, which of your AddOns tells you when your CDs are done? There’s a nifty little graphics that jumps up and says “Concussion Shot Ready” and I have almost all of your AddOns anyways and I couldn’t find.
Help would be appreciated.
you had to learn this? really?
