It Totally Counts

On Sunday, Aetherial Circle cleared Hydross and Lurker and got our first look at Leotheras the Blind. Monday night we went back for Leo, looking for our first kill of this whirlwinding b@stard.

By the skin of our teeth, he succumbed. We died, the Diet Coke of Evil died, then Leo died, but almost all exactly at the same time. We were pumping every bit of DPS we could into him. Screw the whirlwind, he’s gotta go down! The Squeekie Priesie demands to let loose with a First Kill Squeek!

Yes, two Gloves of the Vanquished Hero dropped. No, we didn’t win either of them. Uber phooey.

Here’s the anonymous WWS report and a quick screenshot, we are Titan. Not only did we keep our pet back during the humanoid phases, but we did not go full balls-to-the-wall crazy with DPS; we were much more concerned with staying alive and being in the proper position for the transitions. Our raid had plenty of damage-potential, that wasn’t our concern.

Let’s try answer a few questions about pet survivability against Leo.

1. Pets can easily tank the Inner Demons and Intimidation is great. We saved our Bestial Wrath just in case we had to stand there and melee, but we didn’t have to. We will be using Bestial Wrath at the beginning of the demon-phase from now on.

2. Speaking of which, pets can easily whoop some Leo-@ss during his demon-phase. Send your pet and let him chew face.

3. Pets will die in an f-ing second if you let them anywhere near Leo during his whirlwind or if your pet gets his bleed DoT. Improved Mend Pet did not cleanse Hobbes of the bleed effect, ever. Our recommendation is to keep your pet by your side whenever Leo is in humanoid form.

You need your pet for the Inner Demon, so keep your pet alive for when it really matters and don’t let him anywhere close to possibly getting that bleed. Your total DPS will go down – you can see we’re #5 – but your raid’s chance for a victory goes way up if they don’t have to kill you because you couldn’t kill your Inner Demon.

4. Improved Revive Pet FTW. If your pet does die, IRP his tuckus back into the fight. MM and SV hunters, you’re going to wish you had this handy little talent.

Leo is down and AC is 3/6 in Serpentshrine Cavern!

    Gratz mate well done.

We are just getting into SSC now that we have Grull and VR under control. Had my first look at lurker this week. We managed to get him to about 60% first try but it goes bad very quickly. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on both lurker and hydross.

    Cheers

Congrats on the Leo kill, guys! That didn’t take you long to get the hang of that fight, did it? Question, did you just pull Hobbes back at the last minute to ensure you got the killing shot on your Inner Demon?

  3. James on February 26th, 2008 8:18 am

Gratz! Leo is my fav fight for SSC.

Don’t worry about pets getting the killing blow for mind control purposes. That bug has been fixed. Heck, you could even let your pet solo the inner demon, and then go back to pewpewing Leo in Demon form.

Good luck with Karathress and Tidewalker!

  4. Brunnor on February 26th, 2008 8:35 am

    Gratz on getting Leo.

Heres a tip. Leo is like red light, green light for dps. When not WW and on tank dps on, when WW is on cooldown stop dps and run. During demon, DPS all out. If anything, the majority of the dps should be during the Demon phase.

Oh, and have 2 tanks for each phase. Feral druids wearing the inferno tank set ( FR badge loot ) make excellent secondary tanks for both the human and demon phase.

    Looking forward to more updates!

Gratz on the downing of Leo.

Though I have a feeling that MM and SV hunters probably won’t even give a second thought should their pet die. As a lot of hunters who aren’t BM have a tendency to not even call their pet out sad but true.

    @Kim

Kim asks a good question … unless Blizzard fixed soemthing, if your Pet or something like Snake Trap gets the killing blow on the Inner Demon, you are screwed. Blizzard doesn’t see it as a kill and you’ll get possessed just as if you didn’t kill it.

    Freaking annoying.

The pet mind control bug is no longer there. It’s been fixed a while back.

Feel free to use your snakes, ravagers, raptors, windserpents, etc, to kill your inner demon.

  8. hrrathul on February 26th, 2008 9:47 am

Snake traps help with the inner demon as well.

Funny story, the best wipe I ever had was a Leo wipe. On one of our numerous wipes on our first Leo try, I was FD in a corner waiting for the boss reset, but a silly pally bubbled and was playing around with Leo. Die already we tell him. Well he stays alive long enough for the inner demon call. So since it’s just me and the pally guess who gets the inner demon? Me. So there I am, my pet’s dead and I have no mana. Needless to say I don’t kill my demon. So I become Leo’s slave and get full health and full mana. First thing Leo has me do is put misdirect on him. Why? I don’t know. Then I aim shot and mana drain. Leo’s smarter than he looks. The pally is yelling in vent “Don’t do it, Leo will betray you!” Anyway soon there’s a dead pally, Leo releases me, I feign death, and the fight resets. That was the best wipe I’ve ever had.

Just some advice from another fellow BM with Leo:

    1) You can use your Pet in Humanoif form, just recall it 5 secs Prior to WW, it’s more DPS

    2) Then let your Pet stay and move a little away. WW doesn’t Target pets so Hobbes is save in his corner.

    3) You don’t need your Pet for Inner Demon, Wing Clip and Frosttrap are easily enough

    4) Don’t pop BW right at the beginning of Demon Form, your WL-Tank has to grab Aggro first and he’s tanking via damage, so give 10 sec headstart

    5) During WW go all out nuts as far as Leo is in rage, since there’s the Aggrp-reset after WW

    Regards,
    Velenorx

Did your pet actually get aggro? It’s been a while i’ve done Leo as we’re doing MH and BT now but as far as i remember no growl or intimidation would give the pet aggro.
I just sicked the pet on the demon for extra damage and used intimidation to get some extra range. (must say the smaller deadzone made him alot easier)

It might have been changed in meantime ofc.

Ah.. good to know that they fixed that Inner Demon bug. Been a long time since we ran SSC and that was damn annoying.

    Gratz on the kill BRK.

Grats guys on the Leo kill! Who’s next for you, Fathom or Tidewalker?

  13. Melnayo on February 26th, 2008 11:19 am

What! We are able to whoop Karathress, but Leo still slaps us sideways and makes us call him daddy. I mean, we can sometimes survive until 15% (if our warlock doesn’t die to a debuff that stacks too high, despite max fire resist and soul link — kinda tricky when healers get inner demons), but that last 15% is extra ridiculous. Melee hardly have any time to do dps, and that’s the phase during which you need the most.

Grats from Before Dawn of Blackhand, only a matter of time before you get to Vashj.

Can anyone link definitive proof that the pet kill bug is resolved? I’ve not seen it on any of the theorycrafting sites. Grats on Leo – he’s a fun/hectic fight.

Don’t worry about the t5! next set of hero drops we see are yours!

  17. Dune on February 26th, 2008 2:24 pm

    Congrats on the take down!

  18. Pellegri on February 26th, 2008 6:15 pm

Congrats! Leotheras is probably my favorite fight in SSC if only because I love being a clothie tank. That and that’s a sexy half naked belf. XD

  19. Kohelani on February 26th, 2008 7:29 pm

Would you show us what the +’s are for the Gloves of the Vanquished Hero? For some reason I can’t see them at all – not on your link and neither on Allakhazam. Just wondering..

  20. Rotseh on February 26th, 2008 8:51 pm

Gratz BRK, and welcome to Raid World. :)

  21. Skab on February 27th, 2008 12:25 am

As of 2 weeks ago, you still get mind controlled if your snake trap gets the killing blow on an inner demon. It also seemed to me that my pet couldn’t get aggro, even with intimidation. But I definitely killed mine in time with a snake trap out and got MC’ed. Now I leave my pet on Leo for the whole demon phase and drop a frost trap. With the removal of the deadzone, it’s pretty easy to kill the demon with no help from your pet.

  22. Ragnorax on February 27th, 2008 9:19 pm

    @Kohelani

That’s because it’s the token for the Tier 5 gloves. You have to turn it in to the vendor to receive the actual gloves. Try looking up Tier 5 on Wowwiki for the stats of the Tier 5 stuff.

Oh and GZ BRK on the kill.

I can confirm the “pet” bug has been resolved. I tested it out on my last Leo encounter, since I had lots of time left and wanted to see what would happen if Seacat finished off my inner-demon. Demon died and I was NOT mind controlled. Just don’t tell our raid leader I did that!

Also, I wrote a hunter’s guide to Inner-Demons on my humble WoW blog: http://hi-voltage.blogspot.com/2008/01/your-inner-demon-hunters-guide.html

I have to thank BRK profusively for my current level of performance. I started out as a certified huntard reading his blog more than a year ago, drooling over his abilities and raid experience. I now am closing in on him, though will probably never match his skills!

    Thanks BRK!
