Our Favorite Bows
Same as we did for guns, we’re taking a peek at the top-end bows in the game. Let’s jump right in!
The Marksman’s Bow is the horde equivalent of the Veteran’s Musket. Absolutely worth grinding that Hellfire Peninsula reputation to obtain? Sure, unless you have a chance to run Karazhan. The first boss there drops a crossbow that will match or surpass this bow easily. In our opinion, Shattered Halls is in the bottom of fun instances. Two to four runs to the first boss in Kara instead of grinding Thrallmar rep for this? Take it every time if you can.
The Wraithtide Longbow is famous for being one of the best non-raiding ranged weapons one can obtain. This drops from heroic Steamvaults, one of the easier heroic instances in the game. It’s gun-contemporaries are the Don Santos and the Gyro-Balance Khorium Destroyer, but both of those are expensive, (Auction House and engineering, respectively). This bad boy is a simple loot item! Unfortunately, it has no +Hit like the Marksman’s Bow or the aforementioned Steelhawk Crossbow. If you raid, you’ll want one of those two instead of this puppy, just for the +Hit.
Known to all hunters by the word Sunfury, the Sunfury Bow of the Phoenix drops from Prince Malchezzar, the top-most - some say Final, others disagree - boss in Karazhan. A hunter with one of these gets a little more respect in most parts due to the effort needed to win one; it’s the closest thing to an Epic Hunter Quest reward we have anymore. Is it “better” than the Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle? For Trolls, probably, for Dwarves, probably not. For everybody else, we say it depends on your playstyle and spec.
Can your guild clear Zul’Aman? If so, you’ll have a chance to get an Ancient Amani Longbow. This is a Nice Weapon, with Ignore Armor and a lot of it. It may be heavily Trollish on design, but this is one of the very few bows over which we’d fight our guild hunters.
Have you noticed that all but two of these bows have the same 3.00 attack speed? As a BM hunter, that’s just too slow for our tastes. We’ll always choose a faster gun over a slow bow, but the AAL tempts us a lot. If only we could get our guild interested in clearing ZA… and there were more raiding days… and we only needed three hours of sleep…
Your 25-person guild clears Serpentshrine Cavern and you get your pick of the loot! We know what you want, the Serpent Spine Longbow. Of course we’d pass on it if we were guaranteed the Steam Pistol, but it’s still a meaty ranged weapon every hunter would take. Slow. Again too slow for us, but so are they all.
Do you have 3750 arena points lying around? Check the sofa. Found em? Go grab your Vengeful Gladiator’s Longbow, foshizzle. Of course, you need an 1850 rating to buy the silly thing. We will never own it, that’s for sure. Don’t know about you, but a ranged weapon whose only real purpose is PvP doesn’t really turn us on, anyway.
Mount Hyjal coughs up a hunter weapon, sort of, in the form of the Bristleblitz Striker. But look closely at the stats. Which class is in desperate need of both stamina and crit? Hunters? Um… Warriors? Rogues? No… Enhancement Shammys? Ret Paladins? /boggle. Just a freaky weapon, actually. High DPS is great, mismatched stamina/crit is kinda weird; it’s a PvP weapon without Resilience.
Black Temple has something for hunters as well. Can you knock off Illidan? Piece of cake, right? If so, remember to watch for this piece of hardware, the Black Bow of the Betrayer. Does this bow win the Best Looking Ranged Weapon contest? It just might at that. Is that mana-drain proc different? Totally. Is gaining 8 mana per successful ranged attack the bomb-diggity? Well it isn’t chopped liver, sarsaparilla. Would we turn it down? Nevah! Do we wish it had two red sockets, Ignore Armor, and didn’t have the mana-stuff? Yeah, we honestly do.
Now the Golden Bow of Quel’Thalas is coming in patch 2.4. As such we cannot really talk about it because it could change any second.
But that Legendary Netherstrand Longbow bow is ridiculous! That thing is beyond crazy! Has its own ammo, increases physical damage taken by 5% and can be stacked 5x, and critical strike bonus damage by 50%?? That’s way above and beyond the call of duty. What you hear is the sound of ever squishy in the game going on strike. Could the days of a 6000-damage Aimed Shot crit be approaching?
No. This weapon can only be used against Quel’Thelas Kael’ Thas (spell-check error, we swear). That’s a neck-punch, right there. That’s a no-reach-around and no-kiss.
/sob
You can play with our emotions, but you’ll never take… OUR FREEDOM!

I believe Netherstrand Longbow has been in the game forever (in the TBC sense).
You get it for fighting Kael’Thas in The Eye.
Quel’Thelas is the city of the High Elves burnt to the ground by the Scourge…

I have a hunter who is a night elf. Looking back I wish I’d gone the dwarf root, cos they look cooler.
I digress.
My night elf hunter is an engineer so I’m going to be able to make myself some nice guns and ammo as I level.
What are the pro’s and cons of gun v bow and should elfs stick to bows and dwarfs guns?

thori’dal the stars fury is the new epic bow

The Netherstrand bow is from the Kael’thas fight.

Blood Elf Chicks is right on the Netherstrand bow. For some reason, Wowhead doesn’t have the new legendy for sunwell, but there’s an image on Worldofraids.com
http://www.worldofraids.com/2008/ptr/24/sp/kiljaeden/thoridal.jpg
Highlights:
148.7 DPS 3.0 Speed
+17 agility
Crit Strike Rate +16
Attack Power +34
Ignores 112 Armor
Increases Ranged Attack Speed by 15% (does not stack with quiver or ammo pouch)
It doesn’t state it on the weapon, but if I remember right it creates its own arrows as you fire, so you free up your ammo bag for a regular bag. The damage is supposed to be just above the Black Bow of the Betrayer + Mount Hyjal arrows, so it’s not nearly as heart-attack worthy as it could be… but still a nice weapon to pick up.

Fixed the reference to the Netherstand. Doop. We must have been drunk. Or that salami was spicier than we thought it was…
But it was really good salami.
Felandra on 04 Mar 2008 at 8:46 am #
The big boost in Thori’dal is that it’s inherent DPS is VERY high, meaning it’s damagerange i quiet nasty. That is better than ammoboosted DPS since our favourite shot, Steady Shot, is calculated from weapon damage range, and doesn’t take ammo into account.
Now isn’t that lovely? Almost 50% more DPS from Steady Shot.
The sick thing is that the specs that can take advantage of it’s speed can’t rely on Steady Shot as much, and the specs that can take advantage ofthe Steady Shot boost can’t fit it’s speed. But in any case, it is an upgrade for all specs.

Currently got a Gyro-Balanced Khorium Destroyer… d’ya think I should switch to the Marksmans Bow until something better drops?
Would be interesting to see a combined gun, crossbow & bow list
Kemonojin on 04 Mar 2008 at 8:56 am #
I think I’d take the Marksman’s bow over the Steelhawk… Yes, it’s a little less hit, crit and DPS, but it has agility on it, too. Which gives another 15 attack power for a total of 34, 4 more than the Steelhawk, as well as +crit…
The Wrathstrike would be even better, and I wouldn’t call the gyro-balanced gun a hunter weapon by any means… pvp, I guess, but it’s more a tank ‘place to hang stats’ weapon…
Blood Elf Chicks on 04 Mar 2008 at 9:16 am #
The salami must be really good…
You still want to use the bow against a burnt down forest…
It’s Prince *Kael’thas* Sunstrider… Although, he was Prince of Quel’thalas, so technically in a royal Old English sense, it might make sense to use the bow against Quel’thalas… That’s wat you’re going for, rrrriiiiigggghhhhttt?
Heffer on 04 Mar 2008 at 9:21 am #
@Kemonojin
I’ll make the switch to the Marksman Bow and pick up the +15% quiver from the Mag’har…..
… and then level bows from its current standing of 1/350
/sigh
Cheers

Hey BRK,
Not sure how you missed this one, but my personal goal for a PVP weapon is
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31986
Merciless Gladiator’s Crossbow of the Phoenix
It’s season 2 so doesn’t carry the rating requirement.. it’s still a ton of arena points and who knows what my rating will be come 2.4.
If you haven’t read the story about the creation of this bow, it’s actually quite touching and is linked in the comments section at wowhead. IMHO that’s enough reason to carry this bow into PVP action.
And yes, I know I’m a Dwarf. Weapons rating be damned, I can’t listen to a gun for hours on end.

Petsareus, BRK didn’t “miss” anything. This is a post on bows, not crossbows. You need to wait one more post for that.

About the 6k crit aimed shot…..might suprise you to know but i came close once…..in arenas….against a warrior of all things…no idea what gear this guy had all i know is the team that i faced was rated way too low to be going against our team…by that i mean i’m rated 1724 and got 4 pts off that win…but the insane aimed crit came while enraged and had ferocious inspiration….don’t know if that made a difference or not but my god a 5400 (no lies here) aimed shot crit against a warrior is just dumb….figured you might like to know that it is coming close

We did our first full attempt on Kael last Sunday. I do not want him to die. I do not want to progress. I do not want to do anything, ever again, except every raid night pick up that beautiful beautiful bow and shoot things with it. For pity’s sake, it even makes its own free ammo. Why the hell anyone would ever want to kill Kael and not get to play with the Netherstrand any more is beyond me, but the rest of the raid keeps whining about it for some reason. Bunch of freaking perverts.

“Don’t know about you, but a ranged weapon whose only real purpose is PvP doesn’t really turn us on, anyway.” - BRK re. the S3 longbow
Well, 16 CR and 34 RAP is no slouch. When I plug this baby into Cheeky’s spreadsheet, it ends up putting out basically equivalent DPS to the Hyjal and Black Temple bows (at least with my spec). Here’s to hoping they remove the rating restriction on the S3 version of this bow when Season 4 starts. Plus - have you seen this thing in-game? It looks awesome too! (Forgive me my vanity. I don’t want a bow that looks like two stingrays stapled together…)
Don’t know about you guys, but I’m annoyed that us non-ultra-uber-ranked PvP hunters are saddled with crossbows only - bleh. Gimme a bow - I’m an elf, dammit!

Our GM gkicks people as a hobby. He did it to a druid in our TK raid last night. Cheeky bugger, we still love him.

Hi,
Since this is a bows discussion, I’m gearing up for Kara & currently have a Valanos bow. Should I be looking for something else to start Kara with?
Love the site!
First time poster, btw
Taconite on 04 Mar 2008 at 2:23 pm #
@ Chaninn
I think that I started Kara on the Valanos bow. I think its ok, just DEMAND that your guild take you to the huntsman every week for the Crossbow. It dropped on this toon’s first run into Kara.
Now if only our guild would get BBW instead of Oz, I’m a Dwarf, I want a gun… Anyone else see Oz about 80% of the time in Kara? I wish Blizz would change it so that you could select the event instead of it being random.
Ahrtu on 04 Mar 2008 at 2:39 pm #
Speaking as a co-GM in a guild that has only just begun to try Kara, we don’t /gkick anyone unless there is a pretty gross violation of rules - and even then there are warnings first. The very idea of randomly /gkicking people because it amuses you frankly boggles my mind. I would have a very hard time staying in a guild that did that sort of thing. And by that, I’m not saying I think I’d get /gkicked. On the contrary I’d likely /gquit in a hurry. To me, a guild is like extended family. From things I’ve seen on your blog I know that AC is very selective about the people they admit (which is fine). Why then would they randomly /gkick anyone? It may be none of my business where you hang your musket, but why would you put up with crap like that?
Ahrtu
Xanthelei on 04 Mar 2008 at 3:31 pm #
@Ahrtu
I understand the random /gkicks because my old GM was like that. Usually when he was in an onery mood, someone would be giving him a hard time on Vent or in /g and poof! “Soandso has left the guild.”
It takes about 2 minutes for everyone to stop laughing so hard to get them back in.
It was considered a sort of badge to have annoyed the GM so much he kicked you - we had running totals going for a few people. xD
Now regarding the post… BLEH. Bows are my preferred ranged weapon because I’m into archery stuff IRL, but there’s nothing here for me. /cry At least there’s a spiffy 2.8 xbow coming out WITH HIT as a badge reward next patch. That thing is smexy enough that I didn’t automatically turn in my 41 badges for the Bloodlust Brooch. I want to see what it actually is (and looks like) before I go spending anything. It’s really the only badge reward that could trump BB for me.
Doogie2K on 04 Mar 2008 at 4:03 pm #
Yeah, we have a few odd people who get regularly gkicked or who regularly gquit for effect/humour. They’re usually out for about three minutes, then back in. Long as everyone knows it’s all in good fun, it’s all good. A couple of times, I’ve really played it up in /g and actually gotten “Dude WTF?” whispers from other guildies until they realized that the joke was on them. The “evictee” and I couldn’t stop laughing for nearly ten minutes.
Sisutar on 04 Mar 2008 at 9:42 pm #
Nice post BRK. As a bow/xbow lover this is of much interest. (You dwarves with your BOOM-BANG-A-BANG guns– yuck.)
It might have been a better idea to make a combined bow+xbow post tho (?)
Regardless, the S3 Vengeful Gladiator’s longbow is by far the most beautiful weapon in the whole game (imho), and it has utterly amazing stats. I don’t understand your disdain for it at all o_O
It’s one of few absolute “Must do/have” goals as a Hunter in WoW.
I’ve got 3100ish arena point now but having a spot of trouble getting 1850 personal.. Oh well, S4 is just around the corner, and then the personal rating requirement will hopefully get dropped.
IT SHALL BE MINE OR I SHALL SEE THE WORLD BURN.
Or.. Erm.. something along those lines.

Roll on the cross-bow list
Jeanne on 05 Mar 2008 at 4:29 am #
Many fights in Mount Hyjal and Black Temple are not very friendly with regards to splash damage, aoe damage, and damage to everyone in the raid. Having health is wonderful in those places in order to survive long enough for someone to heal you or for you to run to a safe spot to bandage.
So I picked up the Bristleblitz Striker tonight even though I have the Black Bow of the Betrayer because I don’t think the mana proc is as useful as I thought it would be and I could always use the extra stamina and critical strike rating.
I wouldn’t categorize Bristleblitz Striker as solely a PvP bow although it could certainly be used in such a capacity.
SmokyBG on 05 Mar 2008 at 7:06 am #
Grand Marshal’s Bullseye (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=18833) - it’s a beautiful, beautiful weapon that I will have some day in my collection… I bought the matching crossbow only because of its speed (2.8) being way better for a MM… The Vengeful Longbow is quite good-looking too
Calli on 10 Mar 2008 at 10:36 am #
I remember the first time we got Kael’thas to Phase 2 and the weapons appeared. We nuked the Longbow down pretty quick and our Hunter grabbed it while we shifted AoE over to the rest of the weapons. Needless to say, we wiped as it was the first time we’d done the Weapons and his advisors respawned and kiced our asses before the weapons were down. Afterwards, over Teamspeak I said to the lucky hunter…
“So Greg, how was the bow?”
He just giggled. A lot. Lucky b@stard. Still, Within a few tries I got my hands on that sweet staff.
Nefereous on 01 Apr 2008 at 5:16 am #
Wolf Slayer is better for beast mastery hunters for the fact that if you’re using a 1:1 shot rotation then there is less downtime between your steady shot casts so you infact get an extra 2 or 3 auto shots per min
Minimal i know, but its troof
Brajaya on 05 May 2008 at 1:25 pm #
Jeanne dont take this the wrong way but I hate you (J/K). Both bows…….man only in my dreams.
As I play a troll hunter, I just cant bring myself to use a gun. I dont know, maybe the racial trait I get but to me the look of most of the guns in game right now just dont turn my crank.

My guild has had very good luck with drops recently.
Halbard of desolation and legionkiller have dropped 3 weeks in a row. O_o we have 3 hunters!!. Last night in hyjal I was able to claim Bristleblitz Striker!
Was a nice upgrade from legionkiller, 3:2 feels great with my haste gear and I couldnt be happier.
Say what you want about mismatched stats, but I like having the extra stam in bt/hyjal as many fights require a bit of stam gear.
Hey! An upgrade is an upgrade : ) and this bow is too sexy to get reduced to shards

What about the bow from the Badges of Honor? How does that stack for a Surv Hunter? I didnt see any comments on that one and am trying to figure out if I should use 150 badges on it or a weapon with + agil on it.
