Our Favorite Crossbows
For the conclusion of our ranged-weapon review, we bring out the crossbows. You ready to play with the heavy stuff?
Well lookie-lookie with what we start, the Nerubian Slavemaker. Never seen it? We haven’t, on our own person or anybody else’s. Where does it come from? Old-school Naxxramas, the final bossman himself, Kel’Thuzad. The biggest, baddest instance of the pre-Burning Crusade, we seem to remember that only 2% of WoW subscibers ever entered the palace, (although we cannot confirm that number). This was a shame as it was also considered the best instance Blizz ever made.
This was a weapon to dream about, it was. Our Core Marksman was uber schiznit back then, but it paled in significance to the ultimate 40-man ranged weapon loot. If you ever got one of these things, you have a guild of 50 or so hard-core raiders to thank.
Now we all move to Outland, level to 70, start building out Shattrath factions rep, and eventually become King of the Ogres. Go build rep with Ogri’la, and you can work your way towards the first epic crossbow outside of Naxxramas, the Crystalline Crossbow.
Holy cow, that’s a long wait for a new crossbow, isn’t it. And it’s not even on-par with the epic bows and guns that drop in the regular 5-person instances; those weapons are level 115, this xbow is level 110.
If one just looks at the stats, though, it is a perfect weapon for starting Karazhan. It’s got +Hit, something very few hunters have enough of at the beginning of their raiding career. It’s packing pure Agility, which means RAP, Crit, and armor for both hunter and pet, and the Stamina is always welcome. BM Hunters can appreciate the 2.8 attack speed as it’s not too slow. If you’ve been unlucky in love and loot and haven’t gotten a level 115 bow or gun, this crossbow is a perfectly fine weapon to show up for your first attempt at Attumen.
You do show up for Kara, you control your aggro, you trap like a pro, you Misdirect when necessary, and you take very little damage. Good work, foshizzle, and your raid takes down Attumen. ZOMG, lo’ and behold, a hunter weapon drops! The Steelhawk Crossbow is an upgrade every hunter is going to want. It’s got +Hit, something most of your level 115 bow and guns lack. It’s also very pretty, and kind of a status-symbol of becomming a Kara-raiding hunter. Welcome to 10-man progression and keep up the good work.
You don’t raid. Your schedule keeps you out of Kara, you don’t have time to commit to four hours of WoW, your spouse wants to level her druid with your alt, whatever the reason. So you do battlegrounds when you can and have accumulated a nice chunk of honor points.
Congratulations, take your 27,000 honor and purchase a Gladiator’s Heavy Crossbow. Nice and slow for those big crits, this is a pure-PvP weapon. And it looks so good! You 0/41/20 and 11/41/9 hunters are going to develop intimate feelings for this sweet piece of hardware, that’s certain.
PvP is your bread and butter. Not only do you do battlegrounds, but you found a good partner for arenas and have done a lot of them. Can you accumulate 3,261 arena points? If so, you can go drool over your own, personal Merciless Gladiator’s Crossbow of the Phoenix. If you’re an arena player like we are, just going for fun and stories, this will do you fine, of course. But if you’re actually good at arenas and can jack your personal rating into the 1800s, you can skip this guy. We’ll show you why in a minute.
Instances! you bellow. Doesn’t anybody in SSC or TK or anywhere drop a stinking crossbow? Well, yes, there’s one. Legionkiller is Black Temple loot. Very interesting to look at, but the stats just don’t jump out and give you their undivided attention, do they.
Very high DPS, but the attack speed is a one-size-fits-none. A little too slow for BM, a little too fast for MM, it has no sockets, no Ignore Armor, no nothing fun to show the guildies. It’s level 141 loot and does over 90 DPS, but totally frillless. It’s as if the Blizz programmers suddenly realized that they forgot to put in a crossbow since Attumen, but they were late for lunch and didn’t want to take the time to build a proper Black Temple-grade weapon. Type, type, type, OK there’s a crossbow, we’re off to Bennigan’s. Sad, really.
Does patch 2.4 hold anything in store in the crossbow world? Oh yeah, yes it do. Check this monster out, the Crossbow of Relentless Strikes. The programmers got back from lunch to get this one right, that’s certain.
Lookie at the stats on this gorgeous creature! The perfect BM speed, Hit, Crit, and Attack Power. It’s Badge of Justice gear, as of this writing it’ll cost 150 of the buggers. Can you farm that many badges without going batty? Unfortunately, we cannot. Running daily heroics and clearing Kara every week, we just can’t muster the effort for it. We’d rather watch a movie with Mrs BRK than spend four hours beating Opera and Prince anymore.
Alright, we told you not to blow your arena points on the Merciless crossbow and here’s why, the Vengeful Gladiator’s Heavy Crossbow. For 3,750 arena points and a personal 1850 arena-rating, you can have the ultimate crossbow in the game. If you were unable to get a decent raiding bow or gun, this thing does enough damage that you could raid with it if you chose, but it is a PvP weapon at its heart, obviously.
OK, we’ve done your ranged weapons. We’ve enjoyed this project so much, we’re going to keep going with melee weapons! Stay tuned for ‘em!

It would be great if BRK would place a quick link to these reviews on the sidebar. Thanks for the information.

OK, done. BRK’s Epic-Gear Reviews is on the sidebar.

Very nice BRK…. now we want your top ten ranged weapons, you know all together
What, you wanted me to do some of the work…. damn

BRK, thanks so much for these writeups, they’re a great starting point for looking at the Uber weapons for hunters.
I must admit, I can’t wait to take a look at your melee evaluation, especially if you talk about 2H weapons vs dualwielding nowadays. It seems that all high end melee weapons meant for hunters are all the 2-handers… but I miss sporting duel melee, if only for simple cosmetics. ;-D

I would dual-wield [Warglaive of Azzinoth]/[Warglaive of Azzinoth]. Stupid class restrictions, my Warrior isn’t even Fury!

Oh, so looking forward to the melee weapons discussion. My raider duel wields with agi weapons, so she can agi enchant both of then and get the best agi she can…but waiting for an upgrade, I just don’t know where to go, and if a great agi weapon drops in a raid, you know darn well I would not DARE to roll against the three or four rogues…not if I wanted to ever raid again.

Sweeeeeet crossbow! Funny story about that thing, actually…
I was almost late for a Kara run this week, and our late-nite-come-evening druid raider was going to fill in my DPS spot with her ‘lock. I begged for a spot because we were just starting and I seriously wanted a chance at Huntsman’s xbow. We oneshot him and lo and behold - it dropped! /dance
So after equipping that bad boy, /dancing some more, and pledging unwaivering loyatly to our dear Boomkin, the raid goes on to oneshot Moroes… Maiden… and all the trash to Opera. What is it, Mr. Raidleader? BBW!
I’m just happy because it’s the one I’d never seen. I didn’t get to run around the stage, but I did my part in burning the wolfie down. We get to looting and I at least am patient enough to not grab my badges and peek at the loot. Our RL comes over vent laughing, and links nothing short of the Wolfslayer. OMG!
I’m never going to be able to make it up to that druid for letting me go that week.
So regarding that xbow… I’ll be saving badges for it, and using my spiffy gun in the meanwhile. But getting that gun let me blow some badges on the Bloodlust Brooch, which may have otherwise been a long time coming. But I’m still a Draenei, and a crossbow user at heart.
BRK, I’m begging you - include Gorehowl on your melee list. My RL rolled on it, enchanted it with +agi and is sporting it now. He had SS, is Marks, and I just seriously don’t know if it was an upgrade for him, even if he’s just waiting on Legacy.

Re: badges, don’t forget that 25-man bosses will drop badges too in 2.4, so eventually you will have enough badges without running any kara/heroics.
Also, as a question, in your opinion are the arena s3 weapons better than that badge crossbow for PvE? Slower shooting speed is a bit of a downer for BM PvE, but looking at the PvP xbow I get the impression that it would put out more dps. Also, if you already had one, would it be worth buying the other?

A melee weapon review by BRK would be great, as this is something i have been toying with myself. At the time of this comment i currently have:
2 Sonic Spears - One with +35 AGI, one with Savegry (Polearm)
Season 3 Axe - With Savegry (2H Axe)
2 Felsteel Longblades - With +20 AGI each (1H swords)
2 Stellaris - With +30 INT each (1H Axes)

Legionkiller is only really good for Survival hunters due to the agility.
KaptK on 09 Mar 2008 at 8:35 pm #
Well, I’ve been on the PTR and have already taken a look at me sporting the new crossbow. I am still running Kara regularly to get yet more new guildies “geared up”. I was really disappointed with the current badge loot for hunters. The only thing I’ve used them for is the Bloodlust Brooch and Primal Nethers (for crafting those uber rogue chestpieces from VE rep).
I now have 100 badges. Two more Kara runs and a couple of heroics will get me to the 150 I need for the crossbow. I’m really shooting for 250 though because I want the pants too.
Hurry up and get here 2.4!

Thank you SOOOOO much for the guns/bow/Xbow write ups. Ironically enough, this addresses an ongoing discussion among our guild hunters regarding weapons with the newer hunters in our guild in the never ending edumikation of huntards and hunters in general.
Thank you BRK!

The Halberd of Desolation would answer my hunter dreams. I use a two hander because on my rare melee attempts I don’t want to miss. But saw a hunter, with about 47 thousand HK, lined up for AV dual wielding a couple daggers of bad mojo. Must work for him. And nice combined stats. Maybe I oughtta reconsider the common wisdom. ( not that I am ever likely to get either one….but a dual wield might work better for me).

Thank you very much for the quick links!
@ KaptK
I used some badges to upgrade my gloves to the Gauntlets of Sniping. IMPO, they are as good as if not better than the T4. It was a good upgrade for me as I have been pretty unlucky with the set piece dropping for me off the Curator.

Unless I made an error in my calculations …
Your RL gave up 54 RAP, and ~1.52% to hit for a grand whopping 0.2% extra crit.
J on 10 Mar 2008 at 11:53 am #
Xanthelei,
Gorehowl is not a hunter weapon, especially not if you have the SS. Your RL is a huntard.
He traded: 54 AP and 24 hit for 8 agi worth of crit. Dumb.

The PvP crossbow is a piece of junk compared to the Relentless Strikes for BM.
1. Relentless will give BM at least 5% more dps imho. Probably more. The wasted shot time on the 3s bow is exactly that.
2. Badges will drop off pretty much everything. And farming kara really isn’t a big deal. 2 1/2 hours once a week for one badge every 6 1/2 minutes? But even without kara its no toughy.
If you are into pvp sure, go for it. I’m not a fan of pvp - its not how I play. I just get enough gear to resist easy ganking while questing.

I have a Legionkiller. Granted, I’m survival spec’d, but it’s a pretty swanky weapon even when I happily go back to my BM spec for occasional ZA or Kara runs.
I’ve found that it’s pretty solid with the 3:2 rotation and it outparses everything else I have even with the 1:1 rotation. No, the stats aren’t particularly exciting, but after being in BT/Hyjal for a while, the 30 sta is a welcome stat to have. Sadly, I never have seen a wolfslayer drop, but rest assured I will be buying one of those happy funtime relentless strike crossbows for my BM spec as soon as I possibly can.

I live by Blizzard HQ, and there’s no Bennigan’s for miles and miles :3
Oh, and good article.

Oh thank you BRK, I have so much to look forward to.
I started WoW as a warlock, and that is still my main, for now/evil grin..But after starting a hunter alt the switch is in motion, as I work to make my hunter my main. I love the class so much I started 3 dif race/spec hunters, all between 28 40 as of now.
The only time my lock sees play is raids with my guild, and farming gold mats gear for my hunters, lol. Keep up the great work, your site inspired the hunter in me.

Hello BRK, I’m a dwarf hunter and I’m just wondering what is best for dwarves.. is it the Crossbow of Relentless Strikes or the wolfslayer rifle? dwarves do have gun specialization right? what do you think?
Ashley on 15 Apr 2008 at 2:53 am #
Hey BRK ^_^
I am MM spec and I have the Sunfury crossbow off prince. When the new crossbow came out I was a little sad, because it doesn’t really seem like it would be an upgrade. I don’t know the whole theory craft behind the stats and what not. But just going by the agility and attack power, it seems I will actually loose DPS. But on the other hand, it is .10 faster and it has 10 dps more. So I am so very confused! T_T So my question is, is it really worth the 150 badges? Or would I be better off getting some of the other gear? Please help me in any way you can! Love your site btw. ^_^

@buldozer
I’m a dwarf as well. My guild is currently deep in BT and MH. I’ve been using wolfslayer forever and topping the dmg meters with it. As soon as my server opens up the badge vendor and I get 50 more badges, I’ll be getting the Crossbow of Relentless Strikes. The dwarf 1% crit bonus is less than the increased damage from maintaining a good shot rotation with the increased weapon dmg.
Imo the new badge crossbow is the best BM hunter weapon right now (unless you have good haste gear).

Oh if no one wants the Gorehowl axe, the hunter can roll on it. /SHRUG
