It finally arrived! We shall write a review after we’ve accumulated some experience with the thing. Initial impressions?

1. Cool Box

2. Love the thumb-button

3. Mac drivers FTW!

4. We used our iMac’s built-in camera for the pic, then used Photoshop to flip it horizontally. /pat self on back

5. And you can buy one here and help support the BRK Porsche 911 Fund:

The BRK Porsche 911 Fund is not associated with any worthwhile charity, like the Twin Towers Orphan Fund. The BRK Porsche 911 Fund is neither tax-deductible, a 401-3-c entity, run by competent management, associated with any Wall Street firm, nor meant to encourage you, the reader, to think otherwise. Any similarity between the BRK Porsche 911 Fund and anything close to reality is purely coincidental and accidental. Do not taunt the BRK Porsche 911 Fund.

    BRK,

Do you have the original version too? I keep wondering what the difference between the regular and the TE version is other than the cool blue backlit buttons.

BRK, I really want to know if you can effectively use that thumb button for movement: Forward, strafe L/R, turn L/R?

I’m really tempted to get one, except I’ve just recently reordered my keys so everything is done left-handed, while I use my mouse for movement (backing up is a challenge…really gotta find a work around for that).

Looks pretty cool, but a little too fancy for my likings. Hell, I haven’t even bothered setting up the G keys on my g15 yet :(

  4. Forune on March 24th, 2008 5:49 pm

Bah, move the box, i wanna see BRK in person!

  5. Ataun on March 24th, 2008 6:04 pm

Be sure and go to their site and d/l the driver update and firmware update. Lots of problems with the software shipped.

Only 3 action states, no null state and you cant import your n52 key mappings.

Go to this blog page for a pic of BRK.

I have the n52 original. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made. Was going to get the tournament edition, but didn’t want to wait. If you’re serious about PvP, this little doodad will improve your game tremendously. Went from absolutely SUCKING at PvP to being in the top 1/4 on a consistent basis.

The directional thumb button is a cinch to learn and depending on your class, the ALT thumb button can be bound to those skills that can’t be done while moving.

I change the button bindings for raiding, but having everything at your fingertips makes those around the corner MD pulls to the tank that much easier to accomplish.

BRK, you’re already performing at the top of the damage lists in PvP…not sure this will improve your game all that much, but for me, it was immediate and amazing.

Have had it for about 2 months now and haven’t had any trouble at all.

While i dont have the TE edition, i have used one and i do own the origional. From the reviews i have read on their own forums (http://www.n52te.com/community/) and my own impressions, most are not happy with it, including myself. :(

while it looks nice and all, in the end they removed some of the functionality of the origional. The razor software/front panel is hard to work with compared to the origional. The new one only has 3 states (red, blue, green) instead of the 4 of the origional (none, red, blue, green). The TE defaults to the blue state, and the LED’s are unusually bright and cant be turned off. You can not import your N52 binding to the N52TE, you have to re-set up everything from scratch. Diagonal movements with the Dpad dont work out well as the TE will only do 1 button at a time and not 2 to geather (left fine, up fine, left-up NO WORKY). the new razor software only gives you 4 options for delays in 250ms increments.

So in the end you are paying an extra $50 for lest functionality and “powered by razor” on the side. They really screwed the pooch while no one was looking by letting razor provide the software, the software/driver belkin had was great.

IMO a “Tournament Eddition” should have more functionality, not less. I’ll be buying another regular N52 and keep it in the box incase the one i have now breaks.

    Welcome to awesome.

I did a write-up on the original a while ago:
    http://chicanery.fibergeek.com/2007/04/09/nostromo-n52/

I’ve changed it a little from the original writeup.. take away: play with it .. figure out what you want it to do. Fiddle with it.

It’s a thing of awesomeness when coupled with something like Bartender and Button States. It really cuts down on the screen clutter.

Don’t mean to brag. I’m like all humble and stuff. All I’m saying is that I’ve been a competitive gamer since the release of Quake and even in those days some versions of “game pads” were available. I used to kick the shit out of people using them back then and I still kick the shit out of N52 users in BG’s and Arenas. Is this beacuse of my elite skills you wonder? Nah, partially maybe but the true reason is that NOTHING replaces a full keyboard when it gets down and dirty. Pretty toy? Sure. Effective? Not convinced.

  10. Kruger on March 24th, 2008 7:00 pm

If only they made gaming pads for the left handed people of the world.

  11. Feist on March 24th, 2008 7:14 pm

Y’know photobooth can flip the image without photoshop getting involved.

My n52te arrived this past Friday; on my birthday no less! Woot! Apologies for the following wall of text….

I have been using the n52 for a while now and use it in conjunction with the Trinity Buttons add-on. I have mapped all my in game macros & bindings with Trinity, and then mapped the keyboard buttons to the speedpad.

The initial transition took me 2-3 weeks of playtime to develop the muscle memory involved, but now that I have it down I love it.
    (old dog, new tricks..yadda, yadda)

I found the best way to develop those new neural pathways was to level up a lowbie hunter. I’d get a new ability figure out which key I wanted to use and then go grind or hit the BGs to get in all the repetitions needed to make things automatic.

In switching to the n52te I have noticed that the button feedback is improved, and I’ll actually use the circle button now that you don’t need a death grip on the controller to get the button to depress.

I am having some difficulty with the joystic on the n52te, though its more about not being able to back straight up. I keep veering to the left or right. I think this might be a sensitivity thing that will go away with practice.

Also I believe the “Top Hat” of the joystick is removable(?). I may take it off and see if I like that better since the n52 works well without it.

To Strafe: if you know how to steer with the mouse this isn’t a big deal.

Push right or left on the joystick + right click on your mouse. This will cause you to run to the side and you can change direction with the mouse (I use a trackball). I find this helps with kiting as well since it reduces the amount I need to turn to make a shot.

Also for movement I have mapped AutoRun to the joystick’s “forward”, and regular stop and go foward to the number 3 key(as if it was the “w”).

As for profiles, I use Trinity to map out the different play styles of my alts so I really only use one anyway. I am looking forward to learning to use Macros when StarCraft II releases.

    Maybe I’ll stand a chance then….

Hola BRK! Good timing. I been debating buying the 52te as a birthday present to myself. I know the pros/cons of it versus the original and mainly I am set on the TE due to the fact they say the buttons are nicer. (I am used to my buttery smooth mac buttons!) My big worry is the software! Let us know how it goes! Soon!

And here I thought my ergonomically correct mouse looked cool! (It looks like a ball but with finger groves) I’m envious!

IAN-BRK but a while back I wrot about how I planned to map my hunter’s keys:

*Kruger* & other ’southpaws’, take a look at this one:

only one I know of for lefties

401-3-c? Is that some sort of retirement fund that accepts tax-deductible donations?

    I believe you meant 501(c)(3).

Just giving you a hard time ;)
Congrats on the new gadget! The day I get a desktop computer (I currently play on a 15″ Powerbook G4)…and a desk (said Powerbook sits on the coffee table, and I sit on the floor in front of the coffee table), I’m going to be severely tempted to get something like this.

My latest purchase was one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Cordless-Laser-Mouse-Notebooks/dp/B000TKHBDK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1206456286&sr=8-1
to replace my piece-of-crap Apple Mighty Mouse. It’s amazing how big a difference a good mouse makes - my BG game improved by leaps & bounds, making me one happy rogue :)

  19. cgeorgemo on March 25th, 2008 9:53 am

If you are left handed I’d recommend the Ergodex DX1 or for Vista users like myself the CH Products MFP.
These are the same hardware with different controller software.

While not being a lefty I can see how it would be “handy” for the southpaws.

I actually bought it because I have arthritis and I found that long gaming sessions, with the n52 and G15 combo I was using, left me with sore and burning fingers.

The removable re-positionable keys on the DX1/MFP allows me to position the keys exactly where I need them to give me the most comfort while playing. Long sessions are no longer an issue and the game is much more pleasant a pastime now.

All my complaints may be made null and void. Evidently Belkin actually listened to thier end users and are fixing alot of the things people have been complaining about.
