We rolled into Iceblood Graveyard and found the nearest Horde priest defending the pass. He started to cast Psychic Scream, we popped Bestial Wrath. That Horde priest ran and ran and ran, but Hobbes took him down. It was beautiful. You know how it feels, don’t you. Alliance captured IBGY, we stayed to guard it as the others went for the two towers and Captain Galavanger.

And then that chat rolled by, and we just knew some Horde hunter had done the exact same thing to an Alliance priest that we had done earlier. We laughed and laughed. Golly it’s great to be a hunter.

Note: Tonight we realized that our screenshot preference had been reset to TGA. We have now put it back to PNG and expect much better quality screenshots again.

How does one accomplish this? By modifying one’s config.wtf file, like so:

    I had an issue with this a few days ago, actually. At first glance (as an XP user) I did not have either “SET screenshotFormat” or “SET screenshotQuality” lines in my Config.wtf file - I had to add them in manually.

    Also through my experience, Microsoft Windows XP will not recognize the png setting (not sure about Vista). I have tried setting the format to png, yet the screenshots I take will be saved as jpg. To maintain image quality, I use the following settings:

    SET screenshotFormat “jpg”
    SET screenshotQuality “10″

    I’m not sure that 10 is the highest designation or not, but the screenshots I take using those settings appear crisp and clear so I’m satisfied. I would love to have screenshots automatically saved as png, but that doesn’t seem possible currently.

    ooooo, ima gonna go home and play with that now.

  3. Hunter pets! on April 4th, 2008 10:46 am

    What really annoys me about hunter pets (and lock pets) is that if you stealth while they have you targetted it doesn’t affect them. Hunter can’t see or target you, but that darn pet can.

    Hmm IB GY. What’s the view on this? Alliance on my battlegroup seems to moan and groan if this graveyard is taken, whereas you seem to advocate taking it.

    Just wondering what the thinking behind that is, as I’m still trying to understand the best strategy on this.

    From bg chat (between the curses), the thinking on not taking it, seems to be that if it is taken then horde will respawn near Drek and hence turtle blocking the Alliance attack.

    Technically, a Targa file would be a higher quality file than a PNG as it is a lossless format. Not sure why Targa would ever be set as a default format as it is kind of a legacy file type from the old days of video editing. It can contain the three primary color channels (RGB) as well as an alpha channel for masking effects.

    I really should look into what type of PNG WoW creates when you take a screenshot as there are essentially 2 types of PNG files. PNG-8 and PNG-24. PNG-8 is kind of like a GIF on steroids, but still uses a color table of up to 256 colors. PNG-24 is capable of 24 bit RGB color and inclusion of an alpha channel for transparency.

    Technically, a PNG-24 file will create a much better looking picture than a JPEG as PNG uses a lossless compression scheme called DEFLATE whereas JPEG uses a lossy compression scheme that averages out color information in 16×16px blocks to reduce file size, hence the blocky look and mangled text of an overcompressed JPEG.

    The use of Targa still confuses me. It’s not a bad file format by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s kinda like the tonsils of the graphics format world. It’s not hurting anyone, but it’s also not performing any really useful functions either.

    @Durathor: I suspect in BRK’s battelgroup, as in mine, Horde defend FWGY pretty heavily. Therefore, in our effort to take the FW RH and towers, we need a relatively close graveyard. IBGY fits the bill.

    If we take both IBGY and FWGY, the only place dead Horde can res is at the RH — and that means we have a turtle. But if we can hold IBGY, we can continue to zerg the RH, completely bypassing FWGY (unless, of course, the Horde choose to set up a defensive perimeter to prevent us from re-entering Frostwolf).

    Once the RH is secured, then we don’t need IBGY so much; in fact, a good strat is to trade IBGY for FWGY, forcing the Horde to travel further if they want to retake RH. (Of course, an even better strat is to hold both, as well as RH–but then we sure better kill Drek quickly!)

  7. Fearstalker on April 4th, 2008 12:19 pm

    Kes has it. The only thing better is the full RH rush, with the second group taking the towers, IBGY and Galv, with FWGY being capped right after RH.

    Im my battlegroup, the horde have started to take to defending Galv so the best thing is to take IBGY and RH at the same time.

    And…

    Why can’t you click on map to report AFKers?.. it would be a lot easier than looking on the map, and then having to find them in the list.

    12 is the highest quality jpeg file that I know of. But there’s room for error :)

    In response to the Rogue complaining about Hunter and Warlock pets:

    I’m glad that my Felguard chases your annoying stun-locking butt after I’ve given him the attack order and you stealth afterwards. It, at the very least, gives me a chance to beat you rather than mashing every damn button on my keyboard without the ability to move until you’ve killed me.

    Have a nice day!

  10. Shalkis on April 4th, 2008 12:33 pm

    Like others have said, switching from one lossless format to another does not improve image quality. TGA was probably used originally because of it’s relative simplicity, thus it was easy to implement. PNG and JPEG probably required the acquisition of a third-party image library or use of operating system routines not present on old operating systems. As strange as it may seem now, there was a time when support for PNG was.. lacking.

  11. Aboo on April 4th, 2008 12:50 pm

    @Korei

    Bah! Get more stamina! I have yet to get a COMPLETE stun-lock kill, especially in a battleground. And I’m a freaking Mace rogue.

  12. pelides on April 4th, 2008 1:14 pm

    @Aboo

    I think the real key is for you to get more dps! Stunlocking is about the most annoying thing in BG’s. My hunter gets ganked by rogues all the time who keep me stunlocked and then proceed to beat on me for what seems like two days and never manage to kill me. It’s always some shadow priest, mage or lock running by that will eventually finish me off while I’m paralyzed. Never the rogue.

    I think the appeal of the stunlock rogue is more in it’s annoyance factor than in it’s ability to deal any significant amount of damage… because clearly they DON’T do real damage. It’s like getting hit repeatedly by holy pally and there’s nothing you can do about it.

  13. @Korei on April 4th, 2008 1:26 pm

    Wait, wait, wait … a WARLOCK is complaining about dying without being able to control his character? You’ve gotta be kidding me.

    And unless your gear is pretty sub-par, no rogue will ever be able to kill you, solo, before his stun-lock wears off. Granted I’m rocking almost 400 resilience on my druid and ~275 on my resto shaman, but still. It’s never happened. If you’re dying before stun-lock wears off, I suggest you actually get some PvP gear.

    I always salivate when I see a clothie with no PvP gear in battlegrounds … I can generally kill them before pounce wears off (3100 ap, 42.5% crit).

    Even with 11.5k health and almost 400 resilience, if I don’t have my trinket up, a warlock can kill me before I can do a single thing - hooray for fear.

    “I think the appeal of the stunlock rogue is more in it’s annoyance factor than in it’s ability to deal any significant amount of damage… because clearly they DON’T do real damage. It’s like getting hit repeatedly by holy pally and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
    Rogues don’t do damage? Have you ever fought a rogue with S3 weapons? /boggle

  14. Seanguy on April 4th, 2008 1:49 pm

    Dear BRK,

    Love the site! Have you or any of your guildies thought to challenge yourself by trying to assassinate any of the major Horde leaders? Like Thrall, Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, Shadowhunter Vol’jin, High Chieftain Cairne Bloodhoof or Lor’themar Theron…? I think those would make AWESOME screenshots with you and Hobbes standing over their dead and lifeless bodies…

    Have decent Stamina, have decent PvP gear, still get stun-locked by annoying Rogues, still can’t move, takes forever for them to kill me alone. Still annoyed.

    =)

  16. pelides on April 4th, 2008 2:34 pm

    @Korei

    My rant was meant to be a little tongue in cheek, but stunlock rogues do tend to be more of an annoyance than say a sword or fist rogue with good gear. They just come out of the shadow and start beating the crap out of you. None of this ambush, backstab, kidney punch silliness that takes FOREVER to do any real amount of damage.

    The rogue that comes out of stealth and flat out tries to kill me fast has my respect. The ones that annoy me for 45 seconds before I even notice my health drop significantly should just go away or respec to something useful and respectable!

    All this said, I’m probably going to go spec my rogue for stunlocking just to be a pain in the ass.

  17. @pelides on April 4th, 2008 3:23 pm

    What class/spec are you and how much resil/health do you have?

  18. pelides on April 4th, 2008 4:52 pm

    Pel is a sometimes 41/20/0 BM hunter with about 11-12k health and 337 resil. Sometimes I go MM for scattershot, silencing shot, mana drain annoyance style fun.

    Again, I mean this all very tongue-in-cheek. Stunlock rogues are very effective at keeping me from slaughtering squishies, but honestly, they’re just not very effective at killing… even with S3 weapons. The somewhat high resilience, health and mail definitely help keep me alive for a while when stunlocked.

    Then there are the rogues that come out of nowhere, cheap shot me, look me straight in the eye and flat out slaughter me before I even know what to do. No backstabbing, garroting or anything like that. Flat out assassination. That I can respect.

    My rogue is a very new combat swords 70 and currently working toward his opportunist gear. 3/5 currently and sitting at 10k health and 190 resil. I have yet to take him into any arena or battlegrounds and I’m actually looking forward to being schooled mercilessly when I actually do get him in there.

    I just find stunlocking to be insanely annoying. The trinket does very little because they usually have some combo lined up to keep me stunned after I trinket and my only option during this 12 hour ordeal is to let my pet nip away at the bugger and pray for some lock to come along and actually kill me.

  19. @Pelides on April 4th, 2008 5:09 pm

    I’m sure they find it equaly annoying when you pop the beast within and can no longer be snared or stunned …

    Personally I find Scatter shot to be one of the most annoying abilities ever. Not that it’s ever really the difference between life or death, just that’s it’s really really annoying.

  20. pelides on April 4th, 2008 5:17 pm

    Yeah, Beast Within is a blast… if you can activate it. Hmmm. That gives me an idea! Write a macro that casts it when I pop my trinket! I really should have done something like that long ago!

    Scatter Shot is just fun. One of those little annoying things to do to mess someone up.

    Hunters can be just as annoying as locks and rogues in battlegrounds. I love watching a mage freak out when my huge, red, pissed off insect goes after them. Get a concussive shot on ‘em and a viper sting for good measure and you just know you’re making that mage sweat bullets.

    In hindsight, I probably deserve the never-ending stunlocks I get for all the annoying tricks I like to play on mages.

    @ummmm

    It’s an acronym for the complaint filed in the BG chat of BRK’s screenshot.

  23. roguedubb on April 6th, 2008 8:05 am

    Umm, Psychic Scream is an instant cast, hence you can’t see someone “start” to cast it. But then it’s fairly obvious what’s coming when a Priest runs into melee range.
