We Got Loot? We Got Loot!

BRK » 04 April 2008 » In Blog » 31 Comments

Finally, we got to run heroic Magisters’ Terrace. No real troubles, other than the 5-man PvP boss. That one took three tries.

First time, we had the boss down to 600 health and we actually called out over Vent that she was dead. Then she got nuke-healed back to 75% health and we kicked the dog as we wiped. (We would never kick our 100lb yellow lab, but you get the idea of our frame of mind.)

Second time, we feared the boss into the previous room and she aggro’d a clump we had bypassed. /noob

Third time was the charm, but the engineer mob hit us with a rocket launcher at the end.

“You’ve got to admit it was cool!” said a teammate.

“It’s cool as long as he’s dead,” we retorted.

And yes, that silly instance actually allowed us to upgrade the one piece of gear we’ve had the longest, our Ebon Netherscale Breastplate. That little item pre-dates our Karazhan-raiding career. It’s not a big upgrade, hardly worth the 100 gold we had to spend on mats for the +6 All Stats enchant.

But it’s an upgrade! It cost us no DKP and it’s ours.

/relax

So how are we looking stat-wise lately? Let’s take a look.

Unbuffed, we’re at almost 370 DPS on tool-tip, which isn’t palty. Notice we’re keeping our +Hit at or above the magic 142 number? When you get new gear, remember to make sure that “higher quality” loot doesn’t crush your Hit Rating.

Purple is rarity, not quality. Watch your stats and compare everything, not just color.

Looks like you’re almost at the “magic” number for survival spec raiding (600 agility). Any chance you’ll give it a whirl? Think we’d all love to see how it compares to your beastmastery wws’s. Plus, the rogues will <3 you.

Hello Mr. Kitty (with such qualities as big and red),

I noticed in your rating buster, you don’t have the mana difference activated. Is your actual mana not that much of a concern for you when comparing gear? Does the loss of 8 mp5 also of no concern?

I ask because I’ve always been a stickler for mana, no matter what game/character I’ve played. To me, running out of Mana is one of the worst things evar!! (this is, of course, with going slow being my number 1 pet peeve, and being poisoined, my number 2)

    Your thoughts?

What’s funny is the first time I ran Magister’s Terrace that same chest piece dropped, and I passed on it because I’m wearing the Ranger-General’s Chestguard from Hydross. Our healer (who plays a hunter as his alt) was openly weeping as the chest piece got sharded.

  4. Papelbon on April 4th, 2008 2:21 pm

grats mang. i got mine on my second heroic mgt run. However, I will probably bank/sell it if I ever get my hands on the ranger-general.

and not that i’d want to brag, but when i went to compare out stats… i couldn’t =[ I'm still raid buffed from last nights, so it wouldn't be a fair compare. maybe some other time. =]

I just replaced my pre-Kara Dragonscale chest piece with this one too…like, 2 days ago!

    Grats, BRK!

I hate that third boss. On my server there is General Chat all the time stating, “Looking for _____ for 3rd boss H Mag T.” Groups fall apart all the time on that evil set of bad guys.

  6. Cyndellene on April 4th, 2008 2:46 pm

Can you compare Gladiator’s Chain Armor, Ebon Netherscale Breastplate, and Tunic of the Rangerlord? I’m fuzzy how the loss of agility makes Ebon Netherscale worth the mats, and why you choose it over Gladiators for raiding.

  7. @Cyndellene on April 4th, 2008 3:13 pm

He probably chose it because back in his day you couldn’t just PvP for a couple of hours and get the S1 gear for honor … if you weren’t doing arenas, you couldn’t get arena gear.

edit: Numbers-wise though this is how it breaks down (I think, could be wrong):

    Gladiator’s: 53 ap, 1.49% crit, RRY sockets
Ebon: 80 ap, 1.40% crit, BBY sockets
    Ranger: 133 ap, 1.04% crit

  8. Crofe on April 4th, 2008 3:27 pm

Are you adding in the Agi to that Crit value on the Ranger?

According to BRK’s rating buster, 1.04% crit is strictly from Crit rating. . .meaning 45 agi will add another 1.125% crit (plus another 6 ap and 0.15% crit for the enchant)

  9. Maxalt on April 4th, 2008 3:57 pm

iirc, the sigma stat summary at the bottom with Rating Buster does take into account both the agility and the crit rating when figuring out the difference between gear. He just doesn’t have it set to specifically show the full crit percent he is getting from this item (which is configurable in Rating Buster). Thanks, Crofe, for doing the math. =)

  10. For the Pie on April 4th, 2008 4:30 pm

BRK, what trinkets do you have equipped? That might change the final numbers a skosh.

  11. Crofe on April 4th, 2008 4:51 pm

    @Maxalt

Yes, ratingbuster sigma does account for the agi and other parts. . .but I just glanced at the post (who’s name appears to be @Cyndellene) and was thinking to myself “Why do I want to drop .37ish% crit for 53ap?” cause I’m of the school of slightly more crit than AP for BMs. So some other points come into play too. . .3 slots = 30agi (with the really expensive gems) which still means the Ranger trumps the Ebon in AP and Crit, but you loose mana regen.

    @for the pie

One is definitely the Bloodlust, but the other looks like the Skyguard Silver Cross?

  12. Mirshana on April 4th, 2008 4:51 pm

Does the magic number 142 apply if you are a Draenei?

  13. @Cyndelle on April 4th, 2008 5:06 pm

Woops, missed the agility on Rangers … should be ~2.17% crit.

  14. Random on April 4th, 2008 5:12 pm

interested to see your reasoning why you consider a chest thats as good as a ranger-generals “hardly” an upgrade. you gained 1 crit and 45 AP from that “hardly” and upgrade. just curious…..

  15. ekister on April 4th, 2008 5:14 pm

My first MgT drop was the phoenix pet – WOOT.

I am using the gladiator chest piece. The MgT chest dropped run #4 but I just didn’t see it as being a step up.

    just my 2 cents

BRK you definitely have some ugly matched armor together. Though I can’t say much if my Breastplate of Rapid Striking were visible it would look hideous. Thank God for a good looking guild tabard to cover up that ugly body armor.

  17. jumb on April 4th, 2008 7:01 pm

OMG same thing happened to me last night! The only difference being I upgraded from the laughing skull tunic, which results in a trinket being my only blue now.

  18. Afallach on April 5th, 2008 2:24 am

I tell ya what, that particular piece you picked up there is about as good as you’ll get in tier 5. I cant wait til I finally finish my damned hunter getting to 70, get some quests done and hit up MrT for that. Maybe then I can retire my warrior, vendor my gear and make my hunter my main =P.

  19. Nick S. on April 5th, 2008 3:00 am

I’ve run Heroic MrT 6 times now. In six of those attempts, the Quickening Sword of Increasing Ubiquity dropped. 5 of those attempts, the Tunic of the Ranger Lord dropped.

Obviously, you just needed to run it with me.

The key to the third boss is not to think about it like a boss fight. It’s an arena battle. Put on PvP gear, CC the crap out of everything, stun, interrupt, keep your healer alive, etc. The key is survival, survival, and killing Delrissa before she heals everyone and breaks all your CC. Convince everyone else to do the same. Kite the nastiest of your non-CCables away, if necessary (the rogue is my favorite to kite, because it’s so much like kiting my real-life nemises.)

For me, that third boss is a godsend. I hardly have to run the first half of the instance because so many groups stall on Delrissa and need CC – here comes the mage. :-)

    Congrats BRK =)

Had that drop last night but passed it to an enhancement shaman as i already have the haste rating BP he drops. Mm. Haste Rating.

I thought you only needed something like 95 hit rating when using a gun because of your racial skill bonus?

  22. scathatch on April 5th, 2008 1:10 pm

The racial bonus for trolls(i believe it’s the same with dwarves) is in plus crit. Now if your a surv hunter your hit can be less and pending the mobs your fighting. I swap a little plus hit when i’m fighting trash mobs compared to bosses in hydross. the magic number for bosses seems to be 9%.
And if i see another prot warrior or resto shamman with my commit from heroic MrT i’m gonna go postal:).

  23. Molinu on April 5th, 2008 1:50 pm

    @scathatch:

Thanks, that clears up a lot. Looks like I was getting my info from something ancient and out-of-date.

  24. Seedorf on April 5th, 2008 5:59 pm

One thing I’m kindof surprised at is that you’re loosing the requisite blue gems for your meta gem.

    Methinks that’s a big no no :0
Maybe some regemming is in order, but is it really worth this marginal upgrade.

  25. SSC on April 5th, 2008 6:27 pm

According to cheeky’s, after plugging in 3x 8 agil gems into the normal mgt hunter chest, it actually shows a higher dps then the heroic chest piece. interesting.

  26. Rotseh on April 6th, 2008 1:34 am

Before the racial bonus of trolls (for bows) and dwarves (for guns) was changed to +1% crit, you needed fewer +hit when playing theses races.

Draenei with Heroic Presence get +1% chance to hit, thus need only +hit to cover 8% chance to hit against level 73 bosses.

As for the chest mail items:

    Ranger-General’s Chestguard:
    +36 Agi, +124 AP, +1.53% Crit, BRY
    +60 Agi, +148 AP, +2.13% Crit (w/ 3x+8 Agi)
    +66 Agi, +154 AP, +2.28% Crit (w/ 3x+10 Agi)

    Scaled Drakeskin Chestguard:
    +47 Agi, +149 AP, +1.175% Crit, +25 Haste, Y
    +55 Agi, +157 AP, +1.375% Crit, +25 Haste (w/ 1x+8 Agi)
    +57 Agi, +159 AP, +1.425% Crit, +25 Haste (w/ 1x+10 Agi)

    Tunic of the Ranger Lord:
    +45 Agi, +133 AP, +2.165% Crit

    Hauberk of the Warbringer:
    +24 Agi, +100 AP, +0.6% Crit, +20 Haste, RYY
    +48 Agi, +124 AP, +1.2% Crit, +20 Haste (w/ 3x+8 Agi)
    +54 Agi, +130 AP, +1.35% Crit, +20 Haste (w/ 3x+10 Agi)

The chest off Hydross is — because of the three sockets — still better than the drops off Kael’thas and even better than the T5-level Shattered Sun BoJ chestguard. Next better chest item is T6 Gronnstalker’s Chestguard, to be bested by Embrace of the Phoenix when leatherworker.

  27. Gorgor & Fugly on April 6th, 2008 5:35 pm

I’m glad I read this entry today, because I ran my first heroic MrT today and got the same chestpiece!

  28. Pyrius on April 7th, 2008 2:00 am

The Tunic is nice and I consider it almost worthwhile to go back into MrT for, but the lack of gems is irritating, causing possible issues with meta gem activation (why is the Relentless Earthstorm Diamond so damn picky?).

On the other hand, I may end up with the Scaled Drakeskin because my server has horrendous Sunwell progress and I’m already sitting on 290 badges.

A few more Kara clears, a few more daily heroics, some Gruul’s, and I’ll probably have enough. Being able to get the xbow, pants, and chestguard in the same day will give me a nice boost.

  29. itsyourchoice on April 7th, 2008 8:30 am

Just get the S3 chest, you won’t upgrade it for a long long time.

  30. Fearstalker on April 7th, 2008 3:10 pm

    @ itsyourchoice:

I think the first thing to get would be the S3 pants, considering the lack of other leg options, and these multiple new chest options.

  31. itsyourchoice on April 7th, 2008 4:47 pm

Well, I have the Camo badge pants and feel they are superior to the S3 pants. Am i missing something?
