It’s a Little Tricky
Well that’s one reason we want the Shoulders of Lightning Reflexes, ’cause they look totally boss.
The differences shown by Rating Buster are over our Pauldrons of Primal Fury. That data is pretty interesting, isn’t it. We took a healthy Hit Chance and Health hit in exchange for some Mana and Haste%. Is the haste good? We think so, at least in moderation. Wanna see?
Here’s the old BRK:
And here’s us rebuilt:
Now it’s not a one-for-one item exchange. If you look closely, you’ll notice our necklace has changed as well. We used to equip the Saberclaw Talisman and we’ve swapped it for our Choker of Vile Intent. We’ve been swapping these two things to maintain our Hit Rating of at least 142 for as long as we can remember. When we get new gear with +Hit, we put on the Talisman. When we start losing +Hit, we grab the Choker.
Another problem was that of our helm’s meta gem. We need two each of yellow, red, and blue gems to activate the meta gem, but now we only have three regular gem slots in all our gear. Plus we want to try to maintain the socket bonus we like.
Now a green gem counts as a blue and a yellow, a purple counts as a red and a blue, and an orange counts as a red and a yellow. We can mix and match “solid” gems and “mixed” gems to satisfy our meta gem’s requirement. But with only three slots - one in the helm and two in our gun - we’re going to have to use “mixed” gems.
Fortunately, our helm had an orange in it already, so thats a red and a yellow down. Our gun has one socket with a purple gem in it, so that takes care of a red and a blue.
Two reds, a yellow, and a blue. We need a yellow and a blue gem to make 2/2/2 of each primary color. What single gem makes a yellow and blue? A green, yes!
Are there any good green gems for hunters? Well, there’s the Steady Talasite for PvP work. Unfortunately, the AH is out of ‘em. But you know what we’ve got hidden in the BRK Bank? A Sundered Chryospace. It’s green and will complete the 2/2/2 red/blue/yellow out meta gem needs to activate, so into the ole gun it goes. Blamo!
How will the haste affect our total DPS when our shot rotation is employed? Well you can bet we’ll write about it once we test it out on Al’ar on Sunday night, foshizzle.

Nice post… Really like the ‘gear back and forth with other stuff for upgrades’.
3 sockets and still getting the meta, as well as getting worthwhile gems, I salute you BRK! Btw, the most awesome green gem ever. As far as I know it doesn’t have a JC version. I would stack those babies if I could ever get them.
Anyway, you are getting awfully fast on Quick Shots. 1.6… That is leaving you very little time to get a Steady off after an Auto to not clip the next Auto (or cause a cascading event that will lead to clipping).
But in all, great work on gearing here. I really should hang onto more gear than I do.
I was going to say the same things as the previous poster about the haste maybe hurting your DPS due to the speed of the Barrel-Blade Longrifle. You might want to dust out the old Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle while you visit Doctor Boom because I have a sneaky suspicion that it will out perform the BBLR now that you are hasted.
I think Beast Masters that have the BBLR will always have an awesome weapon for when with their gear upgrade path takes them away from hasted gear, but I am pretty sure Dr Boom will show that DPS will have gone down with the shoulders.
Their in lies the rub of haste and the real reason why all this hasted gear has suddenly appeared. Quite simply, the BBLR and the Wolfslayer are way better weapons for an unhasted BM than any other in the game. To start using the Tier 5 and 6 weapons BMs will need to start wearing hasted gear to get anywhere near the DPS levels of these 2 beauties.
I think Blizzards solutions to release the hasted gear was in a hope that Tier 5 and 6 raiders will become a new breed of hunter - The Haste Hunter. The Crossbow of Relentless Strikes just seems like another bribe to the hunter community (like the Vengeful Gladiator’s Waraxe) to get us into 2.8 weapons and thereafter into the 2.9 and 3.0 weapons. Being a sucker for bribes I will be getting one as soon as I can get my Dorf paws on one.
Sadly, the reverse is also true for BM hunters that want to wear hasted gear. They will probably need to start looking for slower weapons or suffer the risk of clipping.
When I equiped the Shoulders of Lightning Reflexes with the Bindings of Lightning Reflexes and the Wolfslayer I found my DPS suffered. Until, I own the featherduster, my Shoulders of Lightning Reflexes are banked and the Mantle of the Tireless Tracker is in its place.
There has been some discussion in the BRK forums about all the new haste gear.

Glad to see you back and I can’t wait to hear about your meeting with Dr Boom and your conclusions.

Heroic gems for hunters exist!?
i’ve been rolling with (just a little) bit of spell haste on nickiter the frost mage.
it is MONUMENTAL.
my dps is sickening. i snap through frostbolts more quickly, icy veins has become a force to be reckoned with, even Evocation goes down smooth and easy when it’s so fast. i burn my mana pool on a boss fight and have to switch to a wand (trust me - i’ve done everything i can to regain mana short of hiring a druid to innervate me), and yet my total damage done on that fight is still 5% above similarly- or better-geared casters. haste is beautiful.
but i hope you’ve got the quick fingers to weave shots in with that much speed…
Ahhh, you kept AotH on when you took that screen shot, you cheater.
I was getting all confused how you had so much AP.
Psh! That’s not tricky! To rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that’s right on time. Now *that’s* tricky. Tricky? Tricky! Tricky? Tricky!
I’ve had the same experience as Kalnn with respect to haste rating and BM hunters. My own experiments with Dr. Boom’s Proving Grounds have led me to shy away from haste rating when compared to other stats. The theory I have come to works something like this:
There is an ideal autoshot speed (of 1.6 seconds, approximately, though the actual number isn’t relevant to this) for shot rotations. This is the minimum speed, below which it is impossible not to clip autoshots in the shot rotation.
However, to achieve this sort of rotation without clipping requires a degree of precision in timing that is humanly improbable. Eliminating the dead space between steady shots and autoshots also eliminates the room for error in timing.
Thus, the closer one gets to that theoretical ideal speed, the higher the likelihood that shots will be clipped.
Will a little bit of haste gear hurt? Possibly not, especially for MM/SV hunters. Would I use something like the Abacus of Violent Odds? After my visit to Dr. Boom, I tossed mine back in the bank and replaced it with the dusty old Bladefist’s Breadth.
I’m interested to see how the SoLR work for you, BRK. Those things look pretty darn sexy to me, but I’m just not sure they’re worth spending 2500 gold getting my leatherworking from 366 to 375 over, and then spending 3000 more gold buying the pattern and buying/farming the mats.
Sounds like hunters might end up gemming some spell haste to squeeze in some Steady Shots on faster bows..
Normal haste affects the casttime of Steady Shot (and other non-instant shots for that matter), I’m not sure spellhaste actually does.
It’s because we are a broken class. We have a mana bar, yet we don’t cast spells. Arcane shot is clearly a spell, yet spell buffs don’t work with it. Spell haste and such don’t effect us, although spell hit does our traps…Blizzard has no clue what they are doing with us.
This has nothing to do with your new shoulders (grats, by the way) but I’m wondering about that little tiny picture above the poll. I can read that it says Tauren, but the other text is too tiny. Where did that picture come from?
Anyone remember back in the day when Hunters had combo points and didnt worry about mana issues? Ah to tame a druid again.
And anyone could come up and steal your pet from you.
ah the good ol days!
so i bought the shoulders for a measly 300g farmed the mats and just now waiting on the hearts, got a friend willing to make me the bindings of lightening reflexes as well so i have all those mats farmed too, just waiting on tuesday for the hearts, and I will let you guys know whats up.
“i’ve been rolling with (just a little) bit of spell haste on nickiter the frost mage.

Ehhh….I hate to tell you, but it’s probably a placebo effect. You are probably just playing a little differently due to a perceived change in stats. A little spell haste will make a slight difference, but not that much. Hover over your spells and check out the updated cast times. Chances are that a 2.5sec spell cast is now something like 2.42sec. Not a whole lot, and any slowness in casting will eat up any gains you might have had.
“I’m just not sure they’re worth spending 2500 gold getting my leatherworking from 366 to 375 over, and then spending 3000 more gold buying the pattern and buying/farming the mats.”
2500g?! It will cost nowhere near that much. With poor planning you could level 1 to 375 for that much. Just make Drums of Battle and Drums of Panic for a *lot* less. You can either sell them or keep and use ‘em. And although costs vary by server, the pattern is usually below 500g, with the Hearts around the same. So that will be a lot less than 3000g.
