Gimme a U!

BRK » 18 April 2008 » In Blog »

We ran Magtheridon tonight for more people to get their Naruu title. Time from first pull to Maggy-death was 44 minutes. He been done nerfed, we tells ya! (but you knew that).

We bought a BoJ ring, Angelista’s Revenge. Are we gonna get the xbow? Nope, probably not; it’s too d@mn ugly.

We’re like the Supreme Court. We may not know just how ugly a piece of gear has to be for us to turn up our nose at it, but we know it when we see it. That xbow is that ugly with a capital U a bunch of u’s and an italized and bold “gly”.

Uuuuuuuu gly

Our Primary Leo the Blink tanking warlock has decided to take a WoW-break, so AC may have to recruit another warlock. We think this might be partially our fault as we kept telling him to bring his Big Girl Wand and show us his Demonology-spec DPS, and then we’d bury him at the bottom of the WWS report, his name strewn among the resto druids and holy pallys. It’s sad, actually, we think we broke his spirit. His evil, shadowy, empty-DPS spirit.

Those who can adapt, do. Those who can’t, roll warlocks. Those who quit warlocks to concentrate on school… well it’s just not right.

BRIS! COME BACK!

Stop your whining and roll a warlock.

  2. Orshade on April 18th, 2008 8:06 am

Isn’t that xbow like the best weapon pre bt/sw?

  3. beaker on April 18th, 2008 8:24 am

Yeh its a frickin awesome addition to the hunter arsenal, especially for those who are likely to never see anything past maybe a boss or two in SSC/TK, even if it is ugly as sin. I got my badges (almost 200) and im getting it as soon as we can pursuade that smith to handover her BoJ goodies…at gunpoint if need be.

  4. Loronar on April 18th, 2008 8:26 am

    haha, Leo the Blink

  5. Akycha on April 18th, 2008 8:29 am

It still is ugly as all heck. I have to say I’m in the same camp as BRK here. The upgrade isn’t worth having to look at that all day.

  6. Schrodinger on April 18th, 2008 8:51 am

I don’t know, I rather like it. It matches my beautiful Blood Elf hair, in a way. Also, the fact that it looks like a Hawkstrider’s butt is somewhat appropriate. I just wish it made that “WARK!” sound when it fired. Even though I’m going to have a hard time parting with my Wolfslayer (Guns win, and sexy guns win more) I’ll do so just for the chance to run around looking FABULOUS. >_>

  7. Bruennor on April 18th, 2008 8:52 am

You know, you could always buy the weapon and modify the WoW model to have it look like a different bow. I know this breaks th EULA, but its only client side and Blizzard won’t notice since its not affecting the game or game mechanics. Its just a model skin change.

Do a search out there for people who have altered the skins or added new skins to WoW. I’m sure someone has written instructions on how to change a model in the game to look like a different weapon

If you guild needs a warlock to spec a certain way for Leo, then pay for his respec. Let him be destro, for most of the raid, put up a portal to somewhere, let him respec for tanking Leo, and have the other warlock summon him back. Kill Leo, port him again, let him respec back, and resummon. And have the guild cover the 100g for the respec. If the guild isn’t willing to pay for it, then try downing Leo without it.

  9. dorgol on April 18th, 2008 9:45 am

I love Demonology DPS is for mages.

Just hire an Arena ‘lock, all of them are Soul Link these days!

  10. For the Pie on April 18th, 2008 9:45 am

You play a dwarf for goodness sake. You should be favoring function over form. Form is NE territory.

  11. Felandra on April 18th, 2008 9:55 am

Because the weaponmodel for Blood Elves is so damn small (for a Tauren I can certainly see the problem) the crossbow is hardly noticeable, I like that. If it is ugly, HIDE IT!

  12. megan on April 18th, 2008 9:56 am

Demonology is fine, I only suffer with the spec in raids if I am forced to bring out Imp for tanks (aka I’m the only Lock in the raid).

Otherwise it’s Felguard out and micromanaged, same as a BM Hunter pet, it’s an easy 20-30% of my DPS over the course of the night, that doesn’t add on to my overall threat.

When your Lock was Demo, was he optimized in a group? Because he is both Magic+Physical DPS in one package, you’ll want him in with BM Hunters, MM Hunters, Shamans and Feral Druids.. why? Because most caster “party buffs” are raid wide (read: Curses, Scorch stacks, Shadow Weaving), while things like Ferocious Inspiration and totems are limited to just your 5 man group. Hell, the Felguard even gets use out of Windfury.

The other thing is—your Lock doesn’t have to be Demo for Leo, I’ve done it as Affliction. And if you are Destro, the only reason you’d need to respec for the fight is if you normally put points into Nether Protection, that’s a no-no for Le-o.

  13. Tarby on April 18th, 2008 10:54 am

Yea the xbow is ugly…but it puts out mad DPS.

Actually dosent look *too* bad on a belf, but I miss the look of my Sunfury *sniffle* The belf shooting animation for guns and xbows is all kinds of fail :(

  14. Celi on April 18th, 2008 10:59 am

Well my alt (female belt) is currently running with Sunfury bow of the Phoenix, and even though she will never see the inside of BT and MH (which my main is running), and probably never SSC and TK (unless we can get a alt run going in there ;) I’m sticking with the bow over the crossbow. And I even have 180 badges something. It’s too damn ugly! I wouldn’t stand seeing my character with that for the rest of the days until next expansion! My bow is beautiful, I love it.

Instead I will spend the badges on getting the leggings and gloves, no use having a great weapon if the rest of you gear is not in line with it! Yea, people with Gladiator’s crossbow and green gear, I’m looking at you! /frown

Oh and I ran a pug Gruul yesterday, a hunter that had half green, half blue gear got tier 4 shoulders and leggings. I felt a bit like crying.

  15. Lefaye on April 18th, 2008 11:04 am

Nether Protection has no effect against Leo. His fire blasts will not cause it to proc. Leo can be tanked by any of the 3 warlock specs, as long as you can muster 15k health + 365 FR + a decent spell hit rating in your resist gear / decent threat output, when raid buffed.

Afflict locks have the advantage towards spell hit rating, since they can use suppression + curse of doom for a lot of instant threat, as well as stacking DoT’s just prior to the Demon phase shift.

Demo locks have the advantage towards health and FR, since they can use soul link with a felhound to get a 20% damage mitigation and +70 more FR.

Destro locks have the advantage towards threat output, since their searing pain spells often do more damage with a much higher crit rate.

Despite these subtle differences, any raid spec warlock can tank Leo, assuming they meet the criteria above. AC has proven that by killing Leo with a warlock tank of each of the spec’s.

  16. Medwyn on April 18th, 2008 11:06 am

    @megan:

While I can’t say for sure from personal experience, I spec’d my lock 0/37/24 while we learned Leo…the word from elitistjerks class mechanics thread says the following:

Nether protection is good on only a few encounters (Illhoof, Theron Gorefiend, Archimonde). It does not proc off Leotheras’s Demon phase Fire Bolts, so this will not affect your ability to tank him. This is not the case for later bosses (Capernian, Illidan) that can normally also be tanked by warlocks in certain phases: you will not be able to tank these reliably with Nether Protection. Use of a /cancelaura Nether Protection macro can alleviate but not solve the problem. source: http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t17008-warlock_pve_raiding_compendium/
    (bottom of the Destruction section)

I *can* however attest to the fact that when the 41 point talents were released pre TBC, that nether protection was really nice in BWL for a farm night…and REAAALLLY bad for the warlock tank for the twin emps…was a port/respec for me that night.

Edit: Lefaye beat me to it! Work interruptions ftl! =)

  17. Avaric on April 18th, 2008 11:20 am

I went up there to Quel’danas intending to buy that new crossbow. Then I looked at it in the model viewer and changed my mind. Good god, it’s worse than that hydra looking thing that Vorpil drops. I’ll be sticking with my Wolfslayer until I can acquire a BBL.

  18. spookychick13 on April 18th, 2008 11:34 am

Yes, it’s an ugly, ugly bow…but haste!

  19. Grindurbonze on April 18th, 2008 11:34 am

I got the xbow. I love the xbow. I scoped it with da stabilized eternium. I polished it with superior mana oil. I introduced it to the Kara bosses last night.

The Kara bosses laughed at my xbow and my phoenix hatchling.

The Kara bosses laugh no more.

I could not stop going around saying “say hello to my little friend…”

I want the Leggings of Hawt Pursuit!!!

  20. Anonymous on April 18th, 2008 11:42 am

you’re in a sticky situation BRK, you’re more than likely going to have to choose between your favorite spot on the damage meters, or the looks of your character. That xbow is just awesome.

The infuriating part about it is the fact that it used to be a very nice looking crossbow. (a recolored version of something else?) So they actually put forth an effort to make it incredibly ugly.

  21. Heffer on April 18th, 2008 11:42 am

It’s atrocious, disgusting, foul, horrid, nasty, nauseating, repellent, repulsive, revolting, sickening, unwholesome, vilea and ugly. And to boot, its massive on a Tauren which in my eyes only causes more bile to rise in my throat.

    Q. That said, will I get one?
    A. Probably

    Q. When we down a new boss and take a screenie, will I be holding it proudly, posing for the piccy?
    A. Hell no, I’ll drag out my Marksman or WSR

  22. Felandra on April 18th, 2008 12:01 pm

Hehe Heffer… you might be right about that, I will likely bring my beautiful Don Santos for screenies too.

  23. dorgol on April 18th, 2008 12:13 pm

Looks > stats. I still wear Felheart at 70.

  24. Alanor on April 18th, 2008 12:39 pm

    BRK,

You know you don’t HAVE to use a Lock tank on Leo…we were in the same situation a few weeks back, our tank lock said he needed a WoW break and a hunter stepped up to the plate and said “I’ll tank Leo”. He had over 600 BoJ’s so he used some to buy his fire resist set, got a few pieces made and off we went. So for the last 3 weeks we’ve killed Leo with a Hunter tanking Demon form. Come on AC think outside the box, and no respeccing needed! :)

  25. Ahoni on April 18th, 2008 12:48 pm

    @Alanor

Thats great. Hunters should be able to rapidly generate enough threat to handle that fight, and as long as you don’t Feign Death, you should be fine.

  26. Roman on April 18th, 2008 12:53 pm

It’s definitely a dead bird, but still definitely worth the DPS.

With some of this new gear coming out, if you’re going to upgrade, it’s likely you’re going to lose some hit. None of the gear has any it seems like. The only down side to the bow is that you lose that 19 agility. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s definitely worth losing it for the DPS gain.

I also dropped my T5 gloves (keeping my bonus of course :P) for the new gloves. Gained about 1% hit, and forgot how much AP (I want to say around 20?). With that I lost that 19 hit that was on those gloves. The dead bird almost makes up for it. Total loss of about 5 hit. Worth it imo.

Also I switched to the Shattered Sun Pendant of Might instead of the badge neck. Loss of more hit, but I think the proc is worth it. I would be hit capped with it, but without I’m at about a 114 hit rating. You couldn’t kill me to gem for hit either :P. I honestly don’t see it hindering my DPS that much, but if I ever see that it does, I’ve got my badge neck in my bags.

Wall of text crits you for 93.0 DPS… oh wait that’s the dead bird.

(my name should link to my Armory)

  27. TeePee on April 18th, 2008 12:58 pm

Its already been said so I’m just jumping on the bandwagon here…

I can confirm Nether Protection doesn’t proc on the Leo fight and you don’t need to be demonology to tank him. Demonology has the obvious stam and soul link advantage, but if you’re well geared enough and can max out your FR and have the healers to back you up, destro with searing pain can arguably be the best because there’s not much chance you’re ever going to pull agro.

Here’s hoping Bristinie comes back soon anyway tho, enjoyed my chats with him :)

  28. Znodis on April 18th, 2008 1:14 pm

Just say no to the chicken bow.

  29. Bristinie on April 18th, 2008 1:18 pm

Awwww, thanks BRK, I’ll miss showing you what MQoSRDPS really looks like most of all :)

  30. Rob on April 18th, 2008 1:34 pm

I don’t know anything about Leo, but why is a lock required? Can a mage with fire prot do it?

  31. Lefaye on April 18th, 2008 2:25 pm

    @Rob

Any class can tank Leo with maxed FR. However, warlocks have the most advantages with instant aggro (timing a Curse of Doom to proc at the transition), high health pools (16k is easily accomplished in FR gear), a 20% bonus to healing recieved (Fel Armor), and the ability to do so at ranged so that melee can dps on Leo with no concern for the AoE hitting the warlock.

A warlock tank is definately the first choice, but its not the only choice.

  32. Dbragepants on April 18th, 2008 2:27 pm

I think the xbow is getting a bad rap. It’s not ugly, it’s flamboyant! This is glam rock, Vegas strippers, drag queens with attitude. Fat Elvis in sequins, pink cadillacs, Reno in neon lights and Miami Beach colors. It’s bold, gaudy and, most of all, it’s fun.

I’m starting to like the xbow artwork as much as I like the fantastically grotesque primitiveness of the ZA items.

  33. Felandra on April 18th, 2008 2:35 pm

Well, the crossbow would be more beautiful if there were more equipment at had a style like it. But now it sticks out like a sore eye.

But the ugliness competition is won by Tuskbreaker by far. It is the result of giving a Troll Blacksmith some wood and a bunch of scrapmetal.

  34. Hrrathul on April 18th, 2008 2:35 pm

Yep, that bow is ugly. And it’s not much better than the steam pistol from Alar I have. I opted for the chest piece that bumped up my haste which pretty much puts my pistol on equal footing DPS wise.

  35. Naissa on April 18th, 2008 2:44 pm

The new badge stuff IS ugly. Hideously so. Politely looking away strategy be damned, the scream “Oh God what IS it?” and run far away strategy is the only option here. Its that ugly.

I know the tanking pants are a huge upgrade for me but I can’t bring myself to spend 100 badges on blood stained circus formal wear. :(

  36. Bellwether on April 18th, 2008 2:53 pm

U-G-L-Y you ain’t got no alibi

    You ugly!

    Yeah yeah

    You ugly!

Hate all the badge gear aesthetics.

  37. BMHunter on April 18th, 2008 2:54 pm

I got the xbow, it’s in front, I don’t see it, I only see me at the top of the damage meter. The bow maybe ugly but the damage isn’t. If you can’t see yourself using it just because of looks your not helping your raid as much as you can.

  38. Pyrius on April 18th, 2008 3:08 pm

It may be funny looking, but there won’t be anything funny about the DPS it puts out as the best 1:1 steady rotation BM weapon in game. There, I said it.

  39. Anonymous on April 18th, 2008 3:20 pm

If you don’t buy the xbow you’re gimping your raid. Period.

  40. Mackenzie on April 18th, 2008 3:20 pm

Chicken-on-a-stick, Featherduster, Rainbow Brite Armory Escapee. These are not names any dwarf should suffer for his weapon. Take your Angelista’s, go home happy, and sacrifice a few badges to the lewt gawds for your Arcanite Steam Pistol.

    /cuddles Tuskbreaker
“There, there, baby, they just don’t understand you…”

  41. Nick on April 18th, 2008 3:48 pm

maggy-poo is a bit of a pushover these days. sadly, i never got to run him in his OMG-5-wipes state.

you think that bow’s ugly… my mage has nice matching red/gold gear everywhere except shoulders… there i have the truly hideous fel-tinged mantle, which appears to be a reject from the KISS wardrobe truck. it’s like two huge warts…

  42. Pike on April 18th, 2008 3:48 pm

The bow looks horrific, but the DPS looks beeeeeeautiful.

…at least, I assume it will, when it becomes available on my server >.>

  43. pelides on April 18th, 2008 4:09 pm

The new badge gear still has nothing on Dragonstalkers for flat out ugliness! That was and probably still is the worst designed gear in the game. I wore 7/8 of it back in the day and hated every second of it.

Beast Lord was a well designed set and the Demon Stalker set is pretty good as well. Hunter gear should be low key design-wise, not this flamboyant, borderline 70’s Elton John style stuff they keep coming up with.

Hunters should blend in… not stick out like a sore thumb…. says the hunter wielding a HUGE, glowing orange bow.

  44. Shaiten on April 18th, 2008 4:49 pm

BRK I have to say i’m dissappointed in your. Your job as a hunter, which you always say, is to provide mass quantities of sustained dps. The cross bow is now the best weapon for a hunter BM. For you not to take it means you are failing at your job. This is harsh I know and I love ya lots but it is the truth.

Looking Good … NOT YOUR JOB

  45. Blackhammer on April 18th, 2008 5:29 pm

A traditional melee tank can tank Leo’s demon phase just fine. Leo has a very large hit box so if the tank stands at max melee range in front and the melee dps stands at max melee range on the other side then they can avoid his aoe damage. I’m a prot warrior and do the job just fine wearing only the blue blacksmithing set and a few badge rewards. You can drop below 490 defense for that fight because crits are not a concern. My threat definitely suffers with all the fire resist gear on, but if the dps just waits an extra second or two then it’s not a problem. Your tanks need to build a fire resist set anyways for later fights so they might as well be the ones using their badges. Let your ranged classes save their badges for more useful items.

  46. Chorius and Spot on April 18th, 2008 6:39 pm

I bought the bow, sure it looks like I’m using Toucan Sam as a hand puppet, but that dps jump from my Steelhawk knocked my socks off, fo shizzle…

  47. bob on April 18th, 2008 8:08 pm

as ugly as it is; that xbow is the best BM weapon in the game presently. Try it in cheeky’s; i dare ya!

  48. Manekk on April 18th, 2008 9:15 pm

It sure as hell looks better than the sunfury on a dwarf, i hate my gay sunfury more than anythin and since it seems impossible to get the ugly troll gun wich is cool and ugly while the sunfury is gay and ugly.
I´m gonna jump over this X-bow as soon as i can most likely to find i think its BE gay and ugly but what the hell ….

    Manekk

  49. Corwin on April 18th, 2008 9:21 pm

our guild is using warrior to tank Leo too, np there, oneshotting as soon as dps learned to watch their threat on phase shifts, and fire resistance is not needed much after that, no druid/warr/pally tanks have it and we’re 4/5 MH and 3/9 into BT, actually oneshot all bosses so far this week in t6 content

infernals in MH are little tricky, but manageable with good healing even without any FR gear on tanks

  50. Waynebrady on April 18th, 2008 9:42 pm

It’s one of the best BM weapons in the game right now. Using a 3/2 rotation its actually better than the one from the arch. one (if you dont have the DST, if you do the one from him pulls ahead).

With a 2.8 speed and a raid setting with quick shots, heroism, drums, etc… going off it becomes easier to get a 1/1 rotation with it too.

    It does look ugly though..

  51. Allisera on April 19th, 2008 8:11 am

As much as the DPS would be nice, I just can’t stand the look of the crossbow. At this point I’d rather use the badges to buy Nether Vortexes to craft gear for alts than get the crossbow (since I’ve got enough for the leggings, gauntlets, and ring - don’t need the torso).

Of course, I’m a roleplayer, and so aesthetics are at least of moderate concern, especially on something that would be locked in for so long. Still, it’s a relief to hear that there are more than a few others out there that feel the same way.

In response to the poster who suggested model edits: Keep in mind that doing so is:

A- In violation of the terms of service, and can get you suspended/banned.

B- The point isn’t just what it looks like to you, the player, but what it looks like to others that see your character (which you can’t change)

I’m not trying to argue whether or not you’ll get caught, mind you, merely noting that it is the case.

  52. Fatboy on April 19th, 2008 4:27 pm

Has anyone tried The Blade of Harbingers? The Jerks model says I would get a bigger DPS increase by upgrading my Legacy to the Blade, rather than upgrading my SteamPistol to the Xbow.

    cheers

    Fatboy on Aman’thul

  53. Munsen on April 20th, 2008 2:54 am

I cant believe what I just read? You don’t want the crossbow? Does it look horrible? Heck yes, but so does our entire t6 lineup, does this mean your going to stop playing the game after tk and ssc? I cant believe you wouldn’t want that crossbow, there isn’t anything comparable in game for a bm hunter, 2.8 speed is perfect, the stats are amazing, and the white damage is b-e-a-u-tiful. Yes I understand it looks like your molesting a chicken, but please reconsider, if you don’t I will lose all respect for you and have to quit reading your blog… there I said it. and whoever said its not much better than the steam pistol from tk should go eat bricks untill they learn to read, that chest from badges isn’t nearly impressive either, I would go with the ranger generals chestgaurd over it, the gloves and boots on the other hand, definately worth getting unless u have t6 or bowstitched.
