Glad you guys liked the piece. I was pretty touched when one of my own guildies told me about this story this morning, so I absolutely had to write it up, if only to show that not all WoW gamers are sociopaths.
As for why I linked to that particular page, it was a bit of a toss up between that and the three or four other pages covering Sharvan and honestly that one only won because it was the most specifically about the race itself, which was the topic of the article.
Don’t like virtual huh? Well, what would you suggest instead? “e-” or “meta?” I’ve gotta use some kind of prefix for goings on outside of the meatspace otherwise nongamers won’t have any idea whether I’m describing Tauren or actual realworld bull-people. And that’s a whole headache I’d like to avoid.
Anyway, keep up the good work here. I don’t think I’m telling you anything new when I say that as a long-time WoW player it’s well-known that BRK is THE hunter blog, and the truly touching memorialization you guys put together for Sharvan was just amazing. Very well done.
BRK, it was a pleasure to attend the race. I normally do not game until late on the weekends but my wife made an exception to our household policy for this event. She was touched not only by the sincere words of the family, but the fact that so many showed up to show their support for the memorial race.
All the attention that this event has generated has been really fun to watch.
BRK and Ratters, I salute you for the respect you have shown to Sharvan and family throughout the entire event. At no point did it seem morbid or depressing… always celebrating the life of a friend.
WoW gamers get such a bad rap for being sociopathic, spoiled rotten kids and for such a high profile blog to handle such a real and tragic event so delicately is a huge boon to our community of gamers.
Well done guys.
I wish I could have made it on Saturday, but I was busy teaching Final Cut Pro. Maybe next time.
Ah wat the hell…i didnt kno u could win something i was in first for a while till i died…i didnt ask or pry i figured it would be a bit rude considering we’re running for someone not something but it was fun!

That’s pretty awesome. But is it wrong of me to be annoyed at the over-usage of the word “virtual”?

Shame the bottom link was to the initial Cinco de Mayo
Running of Da Bulls post instead of the Sharvan memorial post.
