Hit Me Baby, One More Time

“Dear BRK, what is the hit cap for PvP? i have asked in the wow forums and got no response yet. DSY Jr”

(All calculations are assuming the attacker’s Weapon Skill is 350, and the defender’s Defense is 350, foshizzle.)

The base chance to Miss for a similar-leveled opponent is 5%. At level 70, a hunter builds 1% Hit from 15.77 Hit Rating points. Thus, to increase a level 70 hunter’s chance to hit a level 70 opponent in PvP, he would have to build:

15.77 * 5 = 78.85, or a 79 Hit Rating.

Of course, Survival hunters get Surefooted. Putting three talent points here gives a +3% chance to Hit, so only an additional 2% is needed:

15.77 * 2 = 31.54, or a 32 Hit Rating.

And as long as we’re talking about this subject, let’s quickly revisit the raiding calculations.

Heroic 5-man and higher raid bosses are mathematically level 73. To hit these bosses, a level 70 hunter needs to compensate for a 9% chance to Miss he has against a mob three levels above him:

15.77 * 9 = 141.93, or a 142 Hit Rating.

And our Survivalist brethren get their 3% reduction from Surefooted, so…

15.77 * 6 = 94.62, or a 95 Hit Rating.

But wait, there’s more!

What if you have a Draenei warrior, hunter, or paladin in your party? They give you a 1% chance to Hit, just by being there. Time to recalculate! For us BM and MM raiding-hunters with a Draenei in our party, we need:

15.77 * 8 = 126.16, or a 127 Hit Rating.

Are you lucky enough to run with a balance Druid who has spec’d Improved Faerie Fire? They’ll give your entire raid an extra 3% chance to Hit, physical, (doesn’t apply to magic). Tremendous for dual-wielding classes, awesome for tanks, and super-spiffy for us hunters. IFF will reduce a BM or MM’s hit rating need to that of a SV hunter, only 95!

Getting your Hit Rating to an appropriate level is important, but knowing what level you need to reach is even more critical.

Thx for the info BRK, wasnt sure about for pvp. Btw when you said:

“IFF will reduce a BM or SV’s hit rating need to that of a SV hunter, only 95!”

I guess you meant “BM or MM’s”

so, what should my hit be unbuffed without making sure I don’t have anything special in my party? I am currently having a problem I never thought I would have… too much hit.

    http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Eitrigg&n=Cheetara

ugh, what can I do to fix that?

  3. Bloodtrip on May 26th, 2008 12:25 pm

    @Cheetara
Hell, just makes it easier to take an upgrade with no hit, and to have your hit rating with no +hit gems… your rockin’ it. and like he said higher in the post… a 142 base +hit is fine and what you need to not miss with no raid buffs. i have 108 hit, 128 with my buff food, and i do alright with out missing… but once we go higher into SSC and the Eye and beyond, then i will start to worry about more hit.

  4. Mmgravy on May 26th, 2008 12:26 pm

Cheetara, you can drop 15 hit rating against bosses and still be capped assuming no special group. There is no real need to fix it as you havent gemmed for hit or for hit socket bonuses. Perhaps you could get a ‘better’ trinket that Tsunami, I dont know. Nothing to fret over though

EDIT - bah beaten to it

  5. Rotseh on May 26th, 2008 12:52 pm

You can roll with around 20 less hit than hit cap (142 for BM/MM) if you make sure to consume +20 hit foodbuff (Spicy Hot Talbuk) just before a boss fight.

  6. Rotseh on May 26th, 2008 1:05 pm

    @Cheetara:

Get The Blade of Harbingers for 100 BoJs for a nice haste boost and a lot of crit to replace your Halberd of Desolation with +30 hit and adjust from there.

Alternatively, if you’re not shooting for the 4-set T5 bonus, get the Gauntlets of Rapidity for 75 BoJs. Another option are the Void Reaver Greaves which have no +hit.

AWSOME!!! thank you my great Guru of Hunterness. this is info i needed, thank you so much

you guys are the best! I love ya so much.

BRK, I love the hit post. But you seem to have missed one aspect of that Draenei racial: it ALWAYS affects the Hunter himself. So Draenei Hunters, Warriors and Paladins need 1% LESS Hit Rating than other Hunters, Warriors and Paladins.

Proof be in the wording: http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=6562

I even sent in a question ticket when I was a fresh 70 to be sure, and Mr. GM said that’s how it works. And of course that’s a free 1% hit for Fluffy too.

I still don’t get all the emphasis on Hit Rating, I raided for several months without paying any attention to hit rating.

Ended up with around 90-100 and I can’t remember missing a single shot! Even on Vashj and beyond, I’d rather have more of that yummy Agility and crit.

“Ended up with around 90-100 and I can’t remember missing a single shot! Even on Vashj and beyond, I’d rather have more of that yummy Agility and crit.”

Did you look over your WWS reports to make sure you weren’t missing? Watching the scrolling battle text is not a very good way to tell whether you’re missing shots or not. Granted, being 20 to 40 under hit cap gives you a fairly low miss-rate, it’s still a miss-rate.

  12. Mudge on May 26th, 2008 5:13 pm

You can be a bit under the cap with no problems … I have been at 137 or 138 for quite a while and WWS shows no misses against Mags, Gruul, Lurker in 10-12 raids.

  13. Rotseh on May 26th, 2008 9:52 pm

correction: The Blade of Harbingers costs 150 BoJs (that was a typo above)

  14. megan on May 27th, 2008 2:11 am

In simple, vanilla formulas, 5% hit is all you need for PVP.

However, there are several class talents which will boost up their own chance to “resist” attacks (melee and/or ranged) as well as spells.

Mage talent Arctic Winds is one example from deep Frost tree, giving them up to 5% additional chance that melee and ranged attacks will miss—meaning a Hunter would need 10% Hit to cover the gap—there is always the blanket 1% chance to miss that cannot be covered.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you should stack Hit to the point where you slack on STA/Resilience/AP for Hunter PVP.. but just keep in mind when that clutch Scattershot misses and you’re left with no outs.. it’s your Hit rating failing or their class talents negating your base 5%.

  15. Thundershoof on May 27th, 2008 3:55 am

“…there is always the blanket 1% chance to miss that cannot be covered.”

This only applies to spells. Physical dps (hunters included) can bring their miss chance down to 0%.

“Heroic 5-man and higher raid bosses are mathematically level 73.”

Heroic bosses are only level 72 and not level 73, thus requiring a lower hit rating to avoid all misses. (This also means that these bosses cannot crush a tank and also require a tank to attain a lower defense rating to prevent crits). Only raid bosses will be treated as level 73 (raid bosses are treated as being 3 levels higher than your current level) meaning that amount of hit rating is completely useless until you look to karazhan and beyond.

Also, hit rating is significantly less important to hunters than to other classes that need to maintain a steady rotation of their abilities to ensure their optimal dps rotation. For example if a hunter misses an auto-shot or steady shot his next auto/steady will still hit for the same amount of damage and the order he casts in will not be affected. The same is not always true for druids/rogues etc… and a much higher emphasis is put on hit rating for those classes.

  17. Felandra on May 27th, 2008 8:09 am

Well for Rogues Hitrating remains a very effective stat because they have such a high hitcap and hitrating is such a cheap stat. Of course even they don’t go for hitcap as that would result in the loss of a lot of important stats overall. I think the sweet spot for them is around 4% from cap or something. But meh, I’m no Rogue.

However hitrating is for us still the cheapest per DPS. While we might not see much difference in getting those last few hit, we tend to forget that we won’t see any effect from those few extra critrating points either. Chances are we haven’t recieved a single extra crit due to them over a bossfight, but regging even a single hit where it would have been a miss is a massive difference in comparison. And we get that hit because hit is cheaper.

Of course if a piece of gear with no hit has a lot more crit than the same piece has with hit, then go for the crit. Luckily we don’t HAVE to go for hit as we don’t have any shots aside from Misdirected shots that really count anymore. But it is still the best stat.

I’m SO glad I rolled a Draenei hunter, that 1% hit is a beautiful thing. Ya know…once I realized I got it, not just my party *slapforehead*

  19. Anonymous on May 27th, 2008 11:13 am

Yip, level 72 for Heroic Bosses. Means you can drop around 3% hit and take on other DPS or Stamina gear for Heroics.

  20. Walkere on May 27th, 2008 4:20 pm

    @Felandra

If you’re talking about just 1%, then you will see a difference in the average boss fight.

If you’re constantly shooting a 1:1 rotation with a 3 second bow speed, you’ll let out somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-50 shots per minute. Assuming your boss fight lasts at least 2 minutes, you’ll let out at least 100 shots.

For every 100 shots, 1% hit should make you hit one extra time. Likewise, 1% crit should make you crit one extra time. Every little bit counts, and it will show up if you read the reports.

The way I like to explain it to people is that gaining 1% to hit is increasing your overall DPS by 1%. That’s almost definitely worth more than the equivalent amount of crit, Agi, or AP, and it just gets better as your gear improves.

I thought you would also be gloating about being a DWARF and using a GUN, since you should effectively have 355 weapon skill, dramatically lowering the hit cap for a raid boss.

I’ve got a hunter friend, a dwarf. I’m really keen to head into ZA with him to get that tuskbreaker! Guns are scarce.

  22. Pewpewz on June 16th, 2008 1:01 pm

What would be the + hit % if u were a troll with a bow or a dwarf with a gun
