ZA WWS Surprise

BRK » 27 May 2008 » In Macros, Raids, WWS »

Zul’Aman has four fights that are very hunter-friendly: Eagle, Bear, Lynx, and Hex Lord. Dragonhawk is horribly pet-unfriendly and Zul’Jin is a pain regardless of class. But the fight that is just a full-bore DPS destruction party is Bear.

Obviously, we are Calisto. This WWS report confirms all our theoretical testing: the combination of the 3:2 Steady/Auto macro and Tuskbreaker is the highest sustained-DPS we’ve ever been able to deliver. Yes, it burns through mana like crazy, but we cannot argue with the results. It’s not perfect for every boss-fight, and sometimes a more mana-efficient manual shot rotation will prevent us from going OOM in longer battles. But for this guy, the 3:2 is awesome.

    What impresses me the most is that Sifr and Capricorn are able to pump out that much threat with such little DPS. And only one MD in the group. Any idea what’s doing on that the screen shot isn’t telling us?

    BTW Grats on your 7 minutes of terror success. . . if you were involved in that at all.

    I´m a Warrior tank, and also have a hunter, thats why I´m a fan of BRK´s blog. My Hunter is still a nubzor, gearwise, but my warrior is already tanking ZA with some success. We couldn´t down Jan’alai yet, but we are working at it. I´ve tanked Bear, Eagle and Lynx. and we downed them. The key thing about tanking in ZA ( at least early ZA ) is that the animal avatars bosses are all tauntable. For Bear boss, in particular, the main strategy is 2 tanks to keep taunting the boss from each other. In my experience, i tank him with pally by my side. So we optimxe our threat at each stage. i.e. we use our highest threat moves to generate big spikes o threat while each one is tanking. Due to taunt mechanics, we can perform some aggro “jumps” when taunting the boss. Thats why tanks can generate a huge amount of threat.

    When Jan’Alai the Dragonhawk Boss starts to throw his bombs, recall your pet and stand with it in a bomb-free spot, put Mend Pet on for good measure, and more often than not your pet will survive.

    As for Zul’Jin: Your pet should be able to survive without hassle in all phases but phase 3. I have to date not been able to bring the pet alive through that Eagle phase because of the whirlwinds. So simply leave the pet on the boss starting in Phase 2 and going into Phase 3 (since the Eagle phase isn’t tankable there is no need to stop for aggro reset) until it dies, and then revive it in Phase 4.

  4. Acme on May 27th, 2008 10:46 am

    @Rotseh - On Zul’jin, why not dismiss your pet right at the end of phase 2? Dismiss is 5 seconds, Revive Pet is 10 (4 with talents), and you don’t take the huge pet death happiness hit.

    Oh no BRK has sold his soul to the Macro god.

  6. Rotseh on May 27th, 2008 11:27 am

    @Acme:
    Because it’s 5 seconds of no DPS at the end of Phase 2 where you can go all out into Phase 3. And one should naturally have all talent points in Improved Revive Pet.

    So rather spend 4 seconds reviving your pet at the beginning of Phase 4 where you have to wait because of aggro reset anyway and have your pet (and the uninterrupted MQoSRDPS from yourself) help shorten that terrible Phase 3, at least at the start. The sooner it is over, the better. Ask your penalty-striken healers. :-)

    BRK, Are you able to post the WWS link for that fight? I’m curious to see the total damage for auto and steady. Thanks

    I don’t know who your #3 is on the DPS report, but I am topping their DPS on my level 68 hunter. Granted, it wasn’t in ZA that I did that DPS, but I am sure it wouldn’t be too far off from theirs. :-)

    I have found out there is no need to dismiss your pet during the eagle phase, all you have to do is leave it on “Stay” in one of the corners before the fight starts (I use the corner on the right side as you enter the combat zone). When phase 3 starts, you put the pet on passive and it will go to his/her/its corner and patiently wait there without getting hit untill phase 4 starts. The problem with dismissing it is that not only you lose 4 seconds when you do it and another 4 claiming it back, but it also loses happines and of course the 2% added damage of not having the pet with you (assuming you are BM, which most of us here are). I have done this fight several times, and it has always worked so far.

    @Messyah

    I am guessing Harma is an enhancement shaman which would explain his DPS being slightly lower than the ranged.. Am I right, BRK?

  11. Kleshta on May 27th, 2008 2:17 pm

    Very fat DPS indeed BRK, good job ;)

  12. Acme on May 27th, 2008 2:30 pm

    See, this is what I get for having been survival for the last, well, since I started raiding. I don’t remember things like Focused Fire. Heck, I’m fortunate to have remembered what Imp Revived Pet does.

    I did, however, run ZA as BM over the weekend. I left my pet in there to die to tornadoes or what have you; I’d just like to think there’s a better way. My group didn’t have any trouble on phase 3, nor did we have problems getting things going quickly on 4, though, so maybe I’m more biased towards total DPS for the fight.

    My mileage varies.

    The “The 3:2 Macro” posted isn’t the best one out there, and having Kill Command between the Auto and Steady shot command causes more issues.

  14. Elvenlight on May 27th, 2008 9:40 pm

    Umm, I was just wondering how can someone produce 101% DPs time :D

    What Manito said …..

    Manito - Can you share this improved macro with us?

    cheers

  17. WB on May 28th, 2008 12:36 pm

    Feign Death is an amazing skill.

    And that DPS is just sick. Almost obscene. Particularly in a 10 man, without the 25 main raid buffs.

  18. Sadistic (Lethon-US) on May 28th, 2008 2:09 pm

    Two questions.

    1) how does this macro produce a 3:2 shot rotation? maybe my weapon is too fast, but it still comes out to 1:1.

    2) when you say the tuskbreaker is the highest sustained dps you’ve seen, does that include the Crossbow of Relentless Strikes?

  19. chema on May 28th, 2008 6:42 pm

    @Sadistic: i don’t think it includes the crossbow as he has said repeatedly that he refuses to get it because it’s so ugly.

  20. Kim on May 28th, 2008 7:40 pm

    @Zero: Manito has generously shared his improved macro. One guess where you can find it….wait for it…the BRK forums! So convenient, this place is.

    A hunter friend of mine used the 3:2 macro for Gruul’s last night, and just wow. He saw an increase of about 150 DPS. I’m thoroughly impressed.

    @Rotseh
    Bring a Hpriest to Zul’jin, inform them that Prayer of Mending is a net gain in health during that phase, and should be cast every 10 sec (on themself first if they’re terrified of taking damage). Also remind them that Binding Heal exists.

    For those looking for the WWS of that

    Kim beat me to it, the link posted is the reference to my macro :) More efficient, less shot hang issues overall. Good discussion there too :)
