The Best Addon Ever, We Make It Better

BRK » 15 June 2008 » In Addons, Pets, PvP, Software »

As hunters, the best and most important addon we can use is…

Well, let’s let you guess! Omen? Nope. Fubar? Not even close. Proximo? Nah.

PetEmote, foshizzle.

So you’ve got PetEmote and it’s nifty. But it’s not You. Your pet says distinctive things, not the same things ever other cat and boar and ravager say. How can you make your pet’s style come through?

We’re gonna hack PetEmote. Yeehaa!

First, find the PetEmote addon on your hard drive and then find the “localization.lua” file inside the PetEmote addon folder.

Open this file with a non-formatting text editor. Apple’s default TextEdit works fine, you PC users gotta figure this part out for yourselves.

Here’s what this file looks like when you open it:

That’s right, it’s German. Dude who wrote it has a German-localization setting. Not to worry, we’re just going to scroll down to the English section, like so:

Now we want to find our favorite pet by scrolling down a little more to the Cat section:

Bingo, cat! The [1] subsection is for Unhappy cats, [2] is for Content cats, [3] is for Happy cats. Keep your pet well-fed and he stays Happy, duh. For our little demonstration, we’re only going to worry about the Happy subsection.

Break out your Creative Hat, slap it on your noggin, and think of the things your pet likes to say while running around Shattrath and in between pulls in raids. Type them over the quotes already in the [3] section, like so:

If you want to add more, go right ahead. Just be sure to follow the formatting EXACTLY.

How spiffy! Now your pet’s emotes are as unique as he is. Save the file, launch WoW, and watch the magic begin.

Let us know what you come up with!

Mummm Gnomes, the other white meat. Also its funny to watch some of the guys jump back if they are standing close to my kitty when they see “sniffs the ground looking for a place to pee” popup in the chat.

  3. Lotos and Smoke on June 15th, 2008 11:38 am

“Smoke looks around haughtily, staring through you as if you don’t exist.”

All cats need this line. All of them. Even Hobbes.

  4. Tuna on June 15th, 2008 11:43 am

I have always thought it was cool that whenever I would /pat Hobbes, that he would respond.

It’s the little things like this that makes the game so enjoyable.

BRK, thanks for addressing this guide - it seems people didn’t read the comments on PetEmote’s page, or else they’d of learned how to do this months ago!

For Windows users, I recommend downloading Notepad++, since it manages .lua files better than standard Notepad. I’ve even installed it on Linux (Ubuntu) using Wine - a great little program.

Anyways, if you have Notepad++, you can just scroll down to line 517, since that’s where the English localization begins.

As I said on Curse: If you do add additional phrases, please be respectful of others. ;) It may be an addon spitting out phrases, but you’re the one who added those phrases in the first place. Meaning, don’t harass others with it, else you may get reported.

    Cheers.

    Geek joke:

    cat {
“ponders what life would be like if Heisenberg was its owner.”
    }

  7. mindranor on June 15th, 2008 12:29 pm

    @ indi

    or Schrodinger– yikes!

Arsaelan stares at me without blinking, twitches his tail, and randomly chases something that doesn’t exist (cat). My owl, Talia, is a bit of a klepto, and goes diving after shiny things.

Ishura, a wind serpent, shocks people’s ears and shoulders, but she’s really the friendliest of the lot, chirping at people and trying to weasel bits of cinnamon rolls from them.

    I love this addon!

  9. Icywarz on June 15th, 2008 1:32 pm

Anyone know if you can add random targets to this? Such as “Hail looks at *Randomly targeted person* and wonders how they would taste.”

  10. Avanina on June 15th, 2008 1:47 pm

Icywarz, you can type %t into an emote in order to insert the name of whomever you’re actively targeting. The command would look like:

/pet looks at %t and wonders how they would taste.

You can also try going into localization.lua and customizing the lines to have “%t” in them - without the quotes. I don’t know much about lua scripting, but I think this will also input the name of the current target. I don’t know what will happen if the emote fires off (based on happiness) when you’re not targeting anyone. Suffice to say - if you’re going to tweak any file, make sure you save a backup copy first.

If there is a way to have your pet select a random nearby target, it may require a bit more coding than a simple “%t”.

Let me restate - I’m no addon coder, this is all speculation.

Thanks for the info. BRK. Here’s what mine look like now.

purrs happily thinking of who he will eat next.”,

“roars contentedly, it’s good to be the King of Beasts.”,

“purrs, you’d purr too if you just had a Blood Elf Pally for dinner.”,

“purrs contentedly. Now how about we find something else to Kill?”,

“starts an extensive catlick adding to an already impressive Hairball building in his gut.”,

“looks around for a Rogue that would make a nice snack.”,

“has a stretch and looks around for the nearest litter box, he has to go really bad!”,

“want’s to know where the closest scratching post is or a Troll will do.”,

  12. Axeminster on June 15th, 2008 5:29 pm

My Ravager’s name is Bartleby, so of course I had to add:

    “Bartleby would prefer not to”.

  13. Anj and GirlsVsWorld on June 15th, 2008 7:16 pm

OMG, this was something I did ages ago, about half an hour after first installing it because I wasn’t happy with the rather sketchy English being used. I’m not having a go, the guy speaks better English than I do German, but still…

A few of the ones I have:

“…brushes against your legs as if to say ‘Feed me!’.”
“…growls, or maybe it was her stomach?”
    “…pounces around playfully.”

and finally, if Pavlov had a cat, with a nod to Eddie Izzard:

    “…rings a bell.”

  14. Prathi on June 15th, 2008 8:29 pm

    I came up with:

“headbutts Prathi gently in search of some scruffing.”
    “looks about with disdain.”
“sniffs at Prathi’s packs, looking for fish.”
“flops on his side, clearly bored.”
“has a stretch from his tail to his claws.”
“peers intently at his own twitching tailtip.”
“cocks his ears forward and snarls at something visible only to him.”
“bats playfully at the air, then pretends as if he hadn’t.”

I also changed the plethora of terrible feed messages to:

“snaps up the $f without delay.”

  15. Anj and GirlsVsWorld on June 15th, 2008 8:46 pm

    @ Kevryn:

“purrs, you’d purr too if you just had a Blood Elf Pally for dinner.”

Hmm, I’m not sure I would. Blood Elves are so emaciated I think they’d struggle to make a substantial between-meals snack.

    :P

  16. Gothyelk on June 15th, 2008 9:05 pm

Thanks! I had my entire party in stitches with the little changes I made to this great add-on. Thanks for the tip. :)

  17. Kevryn on June 15th, 2008 9:47 pm

    Anj
He was purring due to the pride in killing one, not an easy task :)

  18. Kroor on June 15th, 2008 10:38 pm

I love you! Thanks for this

  19. Chuque on June 15th, 2008 11:33 pm

Your poll discriminates against Alabamians. A carbonated beverage is neither pop nor soda, it’s coke. Even Pepsi is coke.

  20. Kleshta on June 16th, 2008 2:47 am

    Just lulz :)

  21. Higgins on June 16th, 2008 3:58 am

Not just Alambama Chuque. The whole South refers to any carbonated beverage as Coke. I’d always thought this was how the country as a whole referred to them until my aunt married above the Mason-Dixon line. Not being from the South, BRK would have no idea a typical greeting here goes something like this:

“Well hey, y’all come on in. Can I offer y’all a coke?”
    “Sure, I’ll take a coke.”
    “Alright then, what flavor?”
“Dr. Pepper if you got it, but whatever’s fine.”

Too funny but honest as it comes.

  22. Goldwarte on June 16th, 2008 6:44 am

I recently tamed a Dire Raven and named it “DruidSlave”

“would like to rip your heart out for the Alliance.”,
    “misses his Night Elf family.”,
“wishes he could break this curse and kill his master then you.”,
“desires to slash you and every Horde with his talons.”,
    “dreads this Mage’s curse.”,
“would like to kill the Mage that cursed him.”,

  23. T-Man on June 16th, 2008 7:08 am

    This is just too cool!

    Tks BRK.

  24. Chromaoran on June 16th, 2008 8:00 am

    My pet cat…

Dalek happily ponders contemporary moderate realism.

Dalek looks left! Looks right! Ok, safe to cross the road.

Dalek longs for a warm cupboard and the return of Aslan.

Dalek has a stretch and daydreams about fish. <

  25. WarcraftMom on June 16th, 2008 8:45 am

My gorilla, Fosse, carefully observes the beings around him, making extensive notes on their strange behavior. Fosse also starts choreographing a new dance.

Howland, the owl, wisely says “These here nuclear physics is neither new nor clear” and “Rummagin’ thru the ice box for stale sterling don’t cut no notches on the water pistol.” (That’s from Pogo.)

  26. Thori'dal on June 16th, 2008 9:00 am

    “pees on your knees.”,
“keeps on licking and time keeps on ticking.”,
“thinks that you smell so nice.”,
“sniffs your butt, maybe you need to clean your panties.”,
    “begins to drool.”,
    “starts to moan and groan”,

  27. Grainger on June 16th, 2008 9:14 am

This is awesome! I resisted getting this add-on because it seemed too generic, but now I can have some fun with it.

“Luna sniffs the air, trying to catch the scent of her next tasty gnome snack”

“Icey dreams of The Barrens and the upcoming mating season.”

p.s. your poll also discriminates against us Bostonians. Tonic, ftw!

  28. Adreyu on June 16th, 2008 9:52 am

Oh Thank the Holy and Ever Beneficent BRK!!! I turned off PetEmote’s random emotes because the poor grammar was driving me bonkers. You’re my hero, BRK, truly, deeply.

  29. Bravehawk on June 16th, 2008 10:23 am

    L2 RP Server, imo.

  30. morgainne on June 16th, 2008 11:48 am

how do you get the pet feed messages to show up? they never show up for me

  31. Ragabash on June 16th, 2008 2:02 pm

Omg, you have made me a happy hunter. My cat, Blackjack, now randomly emotes -

“observes the creatures around him and takes extensive notes.”
    “puts on his reading glasses.”
“would like you to get him a beer.”
“contemplates the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum physics.”
“coughs up a gargantuan hairball, after several minutes of making disgusting noises.”
“is completely bored by this situation.”
    “hums a catchy tune.”
“wonders what you would taste like with some fava beans and a nice chianti.”

  32. eustashius on June 16th, 2008 6:43 pm

    Wonderful!
    Cat now…
“licks the blood from his paw.”,
“can’t wait to sing in the alley tonight.”,
“vomits up a large and soggy furball.”,
“weaves between the legs of %t.”,
“lifts his tail in your general direction.”,
    “puts on his pajamas.”,
“refuses to stop growling in dungeons.”,
“thinks defensive mode is for huntards.”,
“thinks you are a near-sighted idiot.”,
    “stares through you.”,
“sharpens his claws on your leg.”,
    “performs an advanced yoga stretch.”
“demands a sporeling snack, or maybe some fresh fish.”

    I really like my PetEmote!
I have had many guildies comment on my pets emotes.
“How come your pet does that? Mine does not!” I tell them about the pet emote addon, as well as Fizzwidgets Feedo-O-Matic. Happy Hunters!

I love pet emote, but it annoyed me when I tamed an owl to find to telling me my owl ‘cawed’ - owls don’t generally caw - they hoot or twit twoo.

Now thanks to BRK, my owl “Hoots,” and ‘Twit Twoos” and “Screeches” when he’s hungry.

And even better my cat, Gwind (evlish for light-blue) gets to point out to my raid leader who ribs me that, “My name’s Gwind, not Gee-wind, ya big meat shield.”

  36. Rimmerdall on June 21st, 2008 4:37 pm

I tried to modify the feedomatic as well like Prathi, however the %f or %s doesn’t seem to want to work correctly. Anyone tell me what I need to do? For the time being I replaced them with “IT” so that it made a little more sence.
