The Streaketh Doth Be Broken

BRK » 16 July 2008 » In Guide »

“hey can u spare 5 silver?”

You’ve heard it, we’ve heard it. Beggars, beggars, everywhere.

We have a standard response:

“And lo! Young traveler, I shall give thee much more than 5 silver. I shall impart unto thee the knowledge of Work and Reward. Bring unto me the quantity of 99 Light Feathers and I shall, in turn, deposit in your soiled and cracked hands the massive sum of 40 gold!”

“you serious?”

“VERILY! 99 Light Feathers shall earn you 40 gold, all hard-earned!”

“where can i find light feathers?”

“Westfall, foshizzle! Out of Stormwind, hang a right, across a couple of bridges, then slaughter all the birds you can find until you have a pile of 99 Light Feathers. Call me back, and I shall Reward thee!”

“no sh!t?”

“NONE! I promise. Check out my blog; I’m totally legit.”

And of course we never hear from the beggers again.

Until today.

“hey, i have your 99 feathers, can we meet in stormwind?”

“VERILY!”

We met in front of the bank. From a level 9 rogue he had grown to a mighty level 18! We traded, he was pleased. One little rogue with more gold than he’d ever seen, glistening in his bags.

How totally awesome is that?!

After growing up myself and now seeing the little ones coming to play, I still remember my first invite to a guild and that I continue to play because I was welcomed into a group and helped.

    /pat BRK

Acts like this make the World , of Warcraft, a great place to be.

  2. Fahr & Bacon on July 16th, 2008 9:18 am

That’s awesome BRK. I’m glad somebody finally took you up on the offer. I have a slew of light feathers on my mage, but if I were level 20 I’d give ‘em all away for 40g just to be “rich” at such a low level.

    I salute thee.

  3. Deathrender on July 16th, 2008 9:23 am

That’s classic! I knew it was just a matter of time before someone actually took you up AND completed your offer. Good for him!

  4. Guy on July 16th, 2008 9:31 am

    OMG…

I tottally was sitting here at work, sippin my morning refreshment thinking “Dear lord… another BRK pwns the Begger with a fake quest” post…

And then I read it, he done completed the quest.

As the kids say, that’s just full of pure win.

    Very nicely done.

    -guy

  5. Tchann on July 16th, 2008 9:35 am

I always ask for 30 Hillsbrad Human Skulls. >.>

  6. WB on July 16th, 2008 9:38 am

    @Tchann - Good lord, I hope that’s a horde-side quest!

  7. Daxenos on July 16th, 2008 9:42 am

I always tell the beggar to follow me, as I exit the city and find the nearest humanoid, which I target, /point, and /s That guy is dying to give you money.

Yeah, I’m not as nice as BRK…lol.

  8. Anansi on July 16th, 2008 9:46 am

That is absolutely brilliant! I mean, it’s funny for BRK to give someone a quest (when will we see a BRK NPC asking for 99 light feathers in the game?), but the fact that the player completed it, learned exactly what he was supposed to learn, and trusted BRK enough to gather 99 of those darned things. And of course, it’s utterly fantastic that BRK kept his word and gave over the gold.

That is, all in all, ten million percent awesome.

And yeah, the Hillsbrad Human Skulls is for a Horde quest. You would be surprised at how many headless Hillsbrad humans there are. The drop rate on those suckers is abysmal.

  9. jumb on July 16th, 2008 9:54 am

Wow, he has enough gold for his level 30 mount now!

  10. Hulan on July 16th, 2008 9:59 am

Ha ha! Good for him :) And good for you for honouring your promise :D

  11. Anotherclown on July 16th, 2008 10:05 am

Only problem with him getting the feathers is now you have to find another lowbie grind to send others on, lol.

  12. Anna on July 16th, 2008 10:21 am

I imagine the headless hillsbrad humans are at about the same rate as eyeless murlocs in westfall.

And yes - this is so full of awesome, the awesome is overflowing!

  13. Alii on July 16th, 2008 10:32 am

That’s freaking awesome! Good for the kid.

I usually give beggers cash if it’s under a gold and they can explain to me what they want it for. “I’m just two silver short of being able to to train this level” is something that’s happened to me before. ((Albeit before I figured out the secret of the AH.)) It’s a long way to run for two silver if you’re in the middle of a capital with nothing you can sell.

This is mostly because of my 13 y.o. cousin. I gave her what I thought was more money than she’d ever need. When she asked for gold just a few levels later, I had to ask what the heck she spent it on. I swear she was buying cruddy spirit greens from the AH for her hunter. She hadn’t gotten the hang of stats yet and she’d blown 5 gold on random crap, repairing after dying so many times, and feeding her pet too often. How she got to level 40 I will *never* know.

@Anotherclown: Hah. Why would he change the quest? None of th e NPCs ever do. :3

  14. Messyah on July 16th, 2008 10:36 am

Hmmm, is someone getting a quiver made? LOL

I pay lowbies to farm that kind of stuff all the time. :-)

  15. Jagerbombz on July 16th, 2008 10:39 am
  16. Pablo on July 16th, 2008 10:51 am

My sons and I share the same account since they play only occassionally. They’re always wanting my higher level characters to finance them, make armor etc. Like Alii said, I’v had to cut them off from the seed money because they’ll go through 5g at lvl 9 in about 20 minutes and not really have a damn thing to show for it. (buy armor with the wrong stats, or worse, armor and weapons from the vendors!)

Now I tell them just to train mining and finance their adventures with copper bars.

  17. Xaren on July 16th, 2008 10:56 am

    @Anna -

We on the horde side have our own murloc eye quest, with the same crappy drop rate, only ours is in hillsbrad, on the murlocs right by southshore.

as far as the hillbrad skulls go, now you know why the horde is constantly slaughtering the farmers and whatnot in hillsbrad fields. however, how innocent are those farmers? look for the building with the “tailors” in it. looks like a hillsbrad meth lab in there…

  18. Softi on July 16th, 2008 10:59 am

    Awesome!! :)

  19. Quest on July 16th, 2008 11:18 am

I need 99 Light Feathers on Terenas. Anyone up for this quest?

    Thanks..

  20. Wulf on July 16th, 2008 11:28 am

This made me LOL IRL. Great story!! ^_^

  21. BM on July 16th, 2008 11:42 am

    BRK -

Grats on buying him half of his first mount. thats a good head start to have at lvl 18. That is what makes people want to keep playing this game.

  22. Donjio on July 16th, 2008 11:49 am

Time now to switch over to a bow and get a quiver of a thousand feathers.

And he can still send others on the quest, he can just sell the feathers on the AH for huge amounts for others to make the quiver.

  23. Verolia on July 16th, 2008 11:54 am

    I need to do that.

    I need those light feathers.

BRK, I swear, if you destroy them all priests will come and hunt you down. especially if you haven’t started Archimonde attempts.

Like c’mon, 99 light feathers = 4/5 days of wipes with over 14 attempts each day. 2 minute levitate is > then a 2 second tear.

  24. Medwyn on July 16th, 2008 11:59 am

    Ah, but more importantly…was there a follow-up quest?? :-P

  25. TeePee on July 16th, 2008 12:10 pm

    /bow
    Great work brk :)

  26. koragg on July 16th, 2008 12:17 pm

Way to go BRK!, that is just coolbeans!

  27. The Wild One on July 16th, 2008 12:19 pm

“Grats on buying him half of his first mount. thats a good head start to have at lvl 18. That is what makes people want to keep playing this game.”

That’s almost the whole thing now. Lv30 mount training is 35g, and the mount is 10g. With faction discounts, you can conceivably get your training and mount at lv30 for a total of 36g.

That rogue should be sitting quite well by lv30, providing he doesn’t blow it all on stupid stuff.

Grats on the payoff, BRK. I put your method to work myself, for both feathers and other random, irritating-to-farm items. I haven’t yet had anyone actually come back and claim the reward, though.

  28. Pike on July 16th, 2008 12:22 pm

    The win. It is epic.

  29. Trakas on July 16th, 2008 12:33 pm

My day at work started kinda crappy, but this article has shed some light on an other dismal start to my day.
    Thank you!

  30. Zumwalah on July 16th, 2008 12:40 pm

i made the same offer, except i said same deal goes for Fish oils as well, for My Shamans bear runs

never heard from the guy again

  31. Kolianna on July 16th, 2008 12:47 pm

My 7 year old’s Shaman is always strapped for gold .. because he is 7 and he spends his money on.. I don’t know what.
In any case I send him out to mine and mail the ore to my bank. After I sell it, I send him the proceeds. It has given him a little taste of having to work for something.

  32. Viktel on July 16th, 2008 12:51 pm

    Nice work!

Your BRK mug now has a companion. The Big Bear Butt mug arrived today….

Now I just need a healer mug and I can take down the Dishwasher Boss in the Kitchen Instance.

  33. 2ndworst on July 16th, 2008 12:58 pm

    rofl …. that’s awesome BRK …..

  34. Yvelle on July 16th, 2008 1:39 pm

Wow, I should have my daughter make a charry on your server, and have her do that. She’s always begging us for money. I caught her buying, and equiping, a quiver for her level 10 warrior. After all, it wasn’t red for her, and was a “bag.” *facepalm* Who knows what else she’s bought?

  35. Jeff on July 16th, 2008 2:00 pm

I’m disappointed you didn’t ask him to chop down a rare elite while dual-wielding a 19-pound catfish afterwards.

  36. Nick S. on July 16th, 2008 3:19 pm

so full of win it hurts.

i’m still waiting for my assorted feather-questers to return :-<

  37. Fahr & Bacon on July 16th, 2008 3:30 pm

I had a guy say he would give me 50s per Stonescale eel, but when I mailed the stack cod he returned it. I was less than impressed. Good for you BRK. I know grinding light feathers would be a huge pain for Hobbs so having the level 9…18 dude work it for you was a winner for both of you.

…of course on my server we have nowhere near that price for light feathers on the AH, but it’s still a winning deal for you both.

  38. Squirrel on July 16th, 2008 4:53 pm

    Sheer unadulterated awesomeness!

  39. Hydra on July 16th, 2008 5:16 pm

I have only done this once. It is nice to see that i could work.

I still say SS or it never happened. ><

  40. Lenlayah on July 16th, 2008 7:13 pm

Aww, how sweet of you to keep your word…If ‘Lenlayah’ would have said the whole ‘99 feather’ thing it would have more than likely been a nice way of saying ‘buzzzzzz off you mooch’.

  41. gnomeaggedon on July 16th, 2008 8:25 pm

Fantastic story.. good to see not all beggars are the same. I would have probably just sat around begging for light feathers ;-)

I expect you filled the player with faith in other players too… something that is sometimes sorely lacking.

  42. kunukia on July 16th, 2008 8:28 pm

    Very nice!

  43. Feiris on July 16th, 2008 8:45 pm

I have to say that is a much better response to beggars then my “WELCOME to IGNORE BEGGAR” that i give all the beggars, but on my server (quel’dores (sp?)) the beggars ask for unreal sums of gold (5-10) for lev 5’s
    Good for you BRK

  44. Kevryn on July 16th, 2008 9:58 pm

Nice job BRK. Also looked up foshizzle in the urban dictionary, so I got two for the price of one at BRK today.
Heart warming story about interaction with children in WoW and learned the meaning of a word I have been seeing you use since joing the site.
I think I will use it too, I like it alot :)

  45. Stale on July 17th, 2008 1:07 am

Can I have 99 light feathers… those levitates dont come cheap you know :P Ill pay 40g for that lol

  46. Marathonian on July 17th, 2008 1:54 am

I saw a beggar in trade today. He DEMANDED we give him 5 gold for his mount. If the silly jerk hadn’t been yelling demands at everyone,I’d have told him some tricks for making over 100 gold by 30.He wouldn’t have listened anyway.

BTW,anyone notice just how many 30’s immediately mounted themselves?SW was full of the buggers playing on their new (to them) mode of transport.Made me think some of the naysayers had it right that 30s really shouldn’t have mounts.

  47. Bonsai on July 17th, 2008 4:02 am

Awesome BRK. Awesome that you gave him the task and awesome that he completed it. Thats good Karma that is.

  48. T-Sonn on July 17th, 2008 8:11 am

I love it. I’m totally swiping that, BRK, modified a bit, of course.
You are indeed full of win and Cheetos.

  49. bluerain on July 17th, 2008 9:59 am

My first thought was, oh, he probably just bought them off the AH, but since it took a month or two for him to get them, he probably really did grind them. Besides, if he’s begging for 5 silver, he probably couldn’t afford the AH anyway (it takes money to make money).

  50. Soladept on July 17th, 2008 5:32 pm

i dont complelty understand beggers myself… im new to wow with a 25ish hunter, and i had nearly 100 gold by level ten, im sitting close to 200 right now, and i have done some spending on occasional equipment upgrades and engineering recipes, and stuff like that.

then again… i sell everything that i possibly can, (auctioneer rocks)

  51. Vixenytli & Chuck on July 17th, 2008 8:18 pm

I actually did this too- after you’d mentioned it. Took him 3 days but I held to my word. I was able to make my quiver! Now I just need another hard-working beggar so I can make a second one to sell!

  52. Feather on July 18th, 2008 6:18 pm

I love this! (linked too) It’s a brilliant way to deal with beggars…give them something to do that throws them onto the path of discovery for things like quest hubs/npcs, new zones and a bunch of random loot from all those birds and the surrounding mobs.

I remember when 40 gold was TONS of money! Ah…to be a newb again :P

    Brilliant idea BRK!

  53. Axien on July 20th, 2008 7:01 pm

Ah, what a truely brilliant way to deal with beggers. I will have to try that out sometime. ;) I used to say, if you duel me I will give you the money you want, have my mage friend port us both over to TB, and then MC him off a high point. :) Good times.

  54. Igoar on July 22nd, 2008 1:52 pm

When I found out what the high-end quiver required I just started storing light feathers all my characters stumbled across. By the time I got the primal nether I already had my 99 light feathers.

If you have friends who can tell you the future, it’s easy to prepare for it.
